Nice to see the ZR-1 up and driving, always think a rolling resto is better than something sat on a drive suffering! ( as you found to your cost but just the way it is!)....Look forward to how it continues and maybe seeing some driving adventures!...good luck.👍👍
OMG , it passed its MOT with just a couple of advisories . Great job guys .Thanks for sharing this journey with us . Good advice on the respray from Marcus - sort out the mechanical gremlins 1st , then the interior , then decide what you can afford or want to pay
Everything you do with an older Corvette is an adventure, and I’m glad we’ve rode along with you guys. I know it has been a struggle, but it’s always fun when you finally overcome them! Very proud of you guys and your efforts!!
Thankyou :) We're surprised to be honest, how little it has needed to get the car moving. If the ECU was less of a pain no doubt it would have been running in a few days :D!
Great to see the ZR1 driving around with no issues. I like the idea of dry ice to clean the underside. Looking forward to the next video you guys put up.
Thanks Robert! Dry ice 100% happening very soon and we will film the process for you of course... We think the uderside will respond very well to a bit of ice blasting!
Do ice blasting underneath. 😅 good video content. And great for the car. Tighten up the bolts on the oilpan. Probably loose. You can remove the brace in front to you can reach the bolts in the front of the pan. And again congratulations guys!! Great job!!
@Auto_Funk, that's awesome to hear! But you really want to tighten does bolts first on the oil pan. Really common they get loose and it's starting dripping like that. Don't do like I did. Buy the gasket, then read up. The bolt was loose. Tighten then and the oil pan was dry😂
Thanks!! Amazing result eh! We feel like the journey can really begin now it's road legal and basically drives as it should (give or take a few issues with suspension, tyres etc!)
Cheers Chris!! The headlights are really fun aren't they :) More updates on the ZR-1 coming soon, it's been very difficult to film and work on it over the winter!
Watched you guys on Barn Find when you first bought the car. It’s an absolutely fabulous car and I’m really pleased you’ve got it sorted and back on the road. The only drawback is you have to drive it on our substandard pothole ridden roads.
Tell us about it... They're absolutely awful! The car rides surprisingly well though... we imagine after a bush kit and a shock rebuild it will be quite smooth!
Wise advice from Marcus(?) to get all the other jobs done first before repainting. Personally, I'd do all the mechanical stuff and chassis refresh so it's tip-top and then leave the body work as it is - character!
Remember, Corvettes are not fibreglass, they are SMC (shert molded composite) and normal filler does not stick, as it has a molded release agent built into it, you have to use a specialist filler or panel adhesive from the US, made by Lord Products (Fusor), also the bumpers don't easily unbolt, they have bolt rails that secure them through the body.
Great job Guys! After dry ice under carriage, fresh paint, you got yourselves an awesome fun rare Vette! Cheers! 🍻 (oh and Corsa exhaust and the Heibeck chip!)
Have to admit the exhaust is really quiet! The engine character reminds us more of european V8s such as BMW 8 series in its driving experience. Drives really smoothly. Quite grown up… Our C5s feel much more raucous by comparison.
@@Auto_Funk that was my immediate response as well when I first drove mine, so smooth and quiet. Then look at the exhaust and you’ll notice why everything is so restricted. shocks can be rebuilt. Btw they really work well.. and new tires will make a world of difference. Obviously you know that cheers to you guys. Great job.
Hurrah ! Nice work there , you two . Don't thank us for our patience , that's been your job ! How refreshing to see it's raining. You should move to Manchester , it never rains here. Honest. So it's a full repaint, then. At least it will be right , I had hoped you'd have been able to fettle it, but at least you'll have peace of mind when it's done. I'd keep it one colour, as original , and not paint the wheels . It's probably not high on your list of priorities , but originality pays off , especially with something as rare as the Zee . They ain't making 'em no more ! That's still a good looking car . from any angle. A nicer sounding exhaust might be an idea? Well done again , it's nice to see deserving folks rewarded for their efforts.
Indeed the sound of the car is more reminiscent of a European V8 such as an 840i. Which is fine, just almost not what you'd expect from a corvette. Rain is unusual down here too! They'll be a hosepipe ban next :D! Original all the way for me! (Chris)
This is a big win for y'all. Having brought a C5Z back to life after sitting for many years, I know you've been through the highs and lows of the struggle bus. Congrats on getting the car legal. The charcoal color offered in 90/91 looks good too especially on that interior. The gas station scene reminded me of a call I received from a friend. He flew out to Kansas to buy his first Corvette a C5 and was on his way back to Atlanta. He was in the middle of nowhere and did not know where the button was to open the fuel fill door.
Brilliant guys love it sounds awesome now. Paint job it is then does sound like right choice guys you could spend hours mopping it and still not getting it to good standard well done glad it’s passed mot and running right 👊🏻👍🏽
Love that you bought this car back to life. To change lyrics to a Steely Dan number from "Drink your big black cow and get out of here" to "drive your big black car outta here".
Guys....what a bruiser!...........Just AWESOME. I'd leave the body/paint alone and enjoy driving it. Maybe do paint later down the road. This car has so much presence. Very glad you guys found a computer for it. I like the extended time the starter spins the engine before start up, I don't know if it is typical for a ZR-1 but I'd like to think it helps get oil pumping through the system before light up. Congrats Guys!
Every one we've heard seems to spin quite a while before starting. Quite different to the LS1 that comes to life first bump of the key. Doesn't hurt giving it a moment for the oil to get round though.
EXCELLENT!!! Catching-up on episodes; been out of town. A few weeks back you asked for colors for a potential re-spray. Checkout the 1967-only color of Lynndale Blue. 👍 Cheers!
Good to see you have turned the corner and can move forward, well done lads. Good to meet you and see the car up close to at mallory, brilliant day, cheers.
Looking sweet 😊 Glad you ended up with the originale color. This is such a special Corvette that not need to be messed with, that's my point of view... 😉 About the failing LCD panel. I saw a episode of Wheeler Dealers there they had the same problem with a LCD panel and they get it repaired for nearly nothing compared to a new panel. I have seen all of your episodes of this ZR-1 and find it very interesting. Best of luck from Norway 😊👍🇧🇻
I can't believe you drove past my place of work and didn't pop in for a cuppa and take me out for a spin 😃 Brilliant result on the MOT. Looks solid underneath.
MOT PASS 💥 What a result and tidy underneath, couldn’t have gone better! Personally I’d go suspension and tyres next then you can safely take her out for a good run and stretch her legs. Be great to see her running max attack 😆 Gotta say from 10 yards with a bit of rain on the paintwork it looks pretty good. Happy for you guys 👍
Thats the thing... its somewhat presentable! If it wasn't for the odd flaking bits here and there! 100%... dry ice cleaning, full bush kit, suspension rebuild, tyres and wheels refurbishment is probably approx our winter to do list!
Quick easy win that would really sharpen her up quickly is a wheel refurb and 4 new tyres. Great news on the MOT! Is it a straight forward paint for the wheels or are they diamond cut? I have a mate in Chesterfield who's fantastic at wheel refurbs - kudos alloys. Be a nice run up for you on the M1 too from Nottingham!
Definitely! Tyres we think are the next port of call - The wheels have diamond cut or polished lips and painted centers, happy for you to send us the details of your refurb guy if he can do diamond cutting, as you say Chesterfield isn't that far from us!
I'm really pleased for you guys, shame summer is over now but I'm sure there's plenty of tinkering to do. Yes please to a 911 video or two, I love Porsches but live on a farm now and missed my chances to own one. I've wanted a Boxster exactly like Chris's since they came out, I'd even be happy with a 986 complete with fried egg headlights. Ugh I wish I could buy cool cars like you guys! 😢 Oh and one final thing, thanks for putting that funky funky track at the start of the video, I always enjoy listening to that one. I'm going to call it "Earworm" because it always gets stuck in my head 😂
Boxsters are awesome... expect the basically cost the same to run as a 911. But they're a great handling car and actually packaged really well, two cargo areas!
Well done boys nice to see the vettes running well & street legal now, Yeah take Marcus's logical advice he knows what hes talking about & keep up the good work🫡
Great. Now time to make it perfect. And those bumpers are a pain to take out and put back. Million small screws and in tight places too. I did have to make new studs too...
I really wasn't expecting a pass but result. Now to catch up on advisories and all those mech jobs before the weather gets shite again. Fortunately it stood on gravel for 18 years.
Neither were we!! We lucked out for sure ! Looking forward to getting all the lines replaced and of course the suspension stuff etc. We think you're right that the gravel really helped!
Yeah, we're hoping ice blasting might work with that... if its not perfect we might consider some thin more "factory" looking lining. Which might help protect the paint on the hood.
Although I'm a hater of Chevrolets I have always made an exception for the wonderful Corvette. Congratulations 'your hard work and dedication on getting what in my opinion is the best ever ' Vette on the road and running. The acid jazz soundtrack is amazing - who's it by?
Thanks Steve!! Glad you like the soundtrack as well - it’s just unlicensed library music 🎶 we choose it carefully though! We (mostly Llew) love a bit of the old Jazz Funk!
To be honest, we weren't that bothered if it did fail. We knew a couple of things on it aren't 100%. We really wanted to get it up on a ramp and inspect. Thankfully the underneath was better than we expected! I guess being parked on well draining gravel (and the lack of drives out in the winter salt) kept the car fairly well. It looks a mess but mostly its that fine gravel dirt that farms make tracks/driveways out of. It will look amazing once its dry ice blasted! :)!
@@Auto_Funk I was more referring to the ECU fixing the driveability than passing the MOT. I've done a few restorations and I nervously waited for the part that I am convinced is going to solve my issue, only to have it not entirely fix the problem.

One original ECM later , and he behaves perfectly , passes an MOT with advisories , while the beating heart engine is smooth as silk.....This ZR1 is a good car and a keeper no doubt !
Thats one thing that people don't realise about American cars I think... Americans do not like unreliability. They're better built than the UK media has really given them credit for. Sometimes a bit shoddy around the edges but the bones are usually pretty good!
Nice work boys. That noise is the throw out bearing. chances are it will just go away with use. replacing the tob is kind of problematic because there are no good factory replacements. what i do is repack the tob with good synthetic grease. i track my cars and this method works for me. that said, i would just work the clutch when u hear that. will probably stop happening.
Yeah we figure that after 18 years there will be some teething issues. It didn't do it on the way down... only after the MOT... perhaps with it idling for 30 mins or so the bearing got a bit warm.
@@Auto_Funk Yeah, took me years to finally try it - used _everything_ else at some point! Definitely one of the most user friendly of the group - tested it on my trailer hitch and the one thick coat is still going strong after a year! CHEERS.
I (Chris) personally isn't going to underseal a car again. Seen it too often where it lifts and water gets underneath. Lanogaurd that isn't going to happen!
@@Auto_Funk _Underseal_ was sent by Satan to destroy metallic dreams! The military destroyed generations of machinery slathering them with that hideous poison. I am currently restoring a Merc that has underseal related cancer. Water doesn't get under Lanoguard but if there's rot already there, sealing it in won't stop it.
Oh geez! Good news! And a PASS at MOT! I was getting impatient as you waited for the ECM from the states. When are you going to switch the dash key to full power and give it a little gas and get all 375 hp moving you down the road pretty quick? And I had the same experience when I put gas in my ZR-1 the first time. Forgot the gas cap was in the center. Had to jockey the car around to get the hose to reach.
Well done guys, brilliant that the car passed the m.o.t with only a few advisors , best idea to eventually giving the car a full respray I know it will be a while before the new paint job is done, but worth it in the end, as always all the very best to both of you. Tim 😊😊😊
Its had water in the tank for over a decade it won't hurt it :)! Jokes aside, I always put E5 or Esso (E0 in most places) in my vehicles... (especially carburettor cars). On cars with fuel injection and knock sensors its less of an issue. This was just a case of we didn't want to run out... so a quick splash and dash!

We want to take the car to as many shows as possible! Whens that happening?
Got a brake light out on the top of the tailgate
One of them new bulbs failed already! I spotted that, very annoying !
It’s called a “Hatch” ya Plonkers. Left England in 1987… never looked back. Brilliant Car.
You need a full stainless steel exhaust on it
Congrats.... time to port the intake and put some headers on lol
Fuel lines and brake lines. Your getting away pretty scot free!!!
Could have been a lot worse eh!!
Fantastic it’s on the road and mot passed that’s great nice work both
lord and son are good lads know them well
I've been friends with Marcus for 30 years - The best in Leicester for jig work I reckon... :)
Congrats dudes!
Thanks!
Amazing it went through first time, brilliant. By the way I didn’t realise Chris did hair (sorry Boxter joke😂)
Haha! I wish I did hairdressing... I'd be a darn sight better off :D!
Pass . Result , few advisories but no big deal , well done, progress.
Have you guys contacted Jonny already, would be awesome to have him visit for a Late Brake barnfind update !
We would be very happy for that to happen/him have a drive of it!
Still my favourite vette shape I think.
There is something extremely pleasing about the C4 shape isn't there... It's an iconic car for us who are both children of the 80s !
Congrats!
Congratulations, guys! Looking forward to further developments. What kind of tyres will you get?
Only really three choices... Michelin, Nitto or Mickey Thompsons. They're about £2000, £1200 or £1100 respectfully! :O!
You should take the car to a dry ice cleaner and get the undercarriage properly cleaned 👍 love your videos. Best wishes from norway
It's 100% the next step! I've (Chris) have just been to Norway a few weeks ago and I liked it so much we're going again!
, feel free to shout out if you are driving your corvette. Or Porsche.. there are a few gatherings or cannonball runs here😅
I bet the roads are amazing!
Get it up in the air to change the shocks - thoroughly clean the underside then Lanoguard it into submission!
I've (Chris) have got quite into the lanoguard! I slather everything in it :D! Very nice stuff to use and peace of mind.
Bring on the mot
Oh geez!
We want to wake the car up slowly. But someday! There will be many teething problems as the car gets woken up no doubt :D!
i'm only at the gas station bit and she's looking heckin gorgeous i'm all jazzed up
Looks pretty presentable!
Congrats guys ....When can we see a spirited drive ?
Probably a little way off that… 😅 getting there though!
Definitely needs ice blasting guys…
Great series binge watch , all day today. Where do you source the music for your videos? Excellent!
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying the journey :) It’s a combination of music I (Llew) have recorded with my band and UA-cam music library stuff… :)
@@Auto_Funk I will be digging deeper, great work and cheers for the entertainment chaps.
Well done guys, brilliant that the car passed the m.o.t with only a few advisors , best idea to eventually giving the car a full respray I know it will be a while before the new paint job is done, but worth it in the end, as always all the very best to both of you. Tim 😊😊😊
Great news! Next video a dyno power run?
She's probably a little way off that yet. :D! But someday that will happen!
Well done guys. But two things, I told you at the start the timing was out and the new ecu has sorted that.
Second do not put e10 in the poor thing 😢
Its had water in the tank for over a decade it won't hurt it :)! Jokes aside, I always put E5 or Esso (E0 in most places) in my vehicles... (especially carburettor cars). On cars with fuel injection and knock sensors its less of an issue. This was just a case of we didn't want to run out... so a quick splash and dash!
👌👊
Great stuff, but I'm pretty sure the C4 is base and clear coat from the factory. All the C4s I've owned have been.
It looks that way to me (Chris)… at least from the wing mirror showing clear coat peel
@@Auto_Funk I can confirm, all Corvettes produced at Bowling Green KY from 1981 were painted in a base / clear system.
will you underseal the chasis ?
Of course - Once it's ice blasted!
Straight pipe it!
:D!! haha. Not sure it would suit the character of it... but sure it would sound good!
Nice
Glad the computer solved the running issues and it passed it's mot.
