      Haven't watched complete episode, however my first car was an 1981 Cordoba, the cousin... also Canadian built. The 318 I had, had "electronic spark control" similar to what they do now, but as always typical Chrysler vacuum leak nightmare, so the "trex broccoli injection" 😂 didn't make many models. He was confused about the carburetor. The TBI system was so problematic that all the 81's were recalled by Chrysler and were converted to carburetor. This recall included replacing the entire dash. I believe the story goes that Frank Sinatra was stranded by his imperial due to the TBI. He was so pissed that he said he didn't want any future models to bear his name. This one might be a Frank Sinatra edition since it's a 1981 model.

    • @2259r3z
      @2259r3z 5 місяців тому +3

      My first "something simple" meniscus tear scope surgery, as predicted by the ortho, led to repeated tears and scopes (four in five years) and not enough meniscus left to prevent my knee from ending up bone on bone. That led to total knee replacement and a knee joint implant which turned septic four years post op. I had emergency surgery to remove the implant followed by three months without a knee joint while I went through daily antibiotic infusion. Only then was I cleared to receive a new implant followed by months of intense rehab. The process took about a year total but saved my leg if not my life. A few years later I had to have heart surgery to correct full time arrhythmia (afib) dating back to and likely caused by the sepsis. I consider myself lucky. A family friend died in his early 40s a few months after "simple" scope surgery on his leg which led to a blood clot.

      From an algorithm perspective it would probably be better to break it into 3 1 hour videos. I don’t have time typically to watch something like this on one sitting so I come back to it over several days, which hurts the watch time since it’s not all watched at once. Either way I’ll be watching it, but it does change if I watch it the first day or if I watch it all at once and those are things that do effect the algorithm which effects the reach of his channel.

    Chrysler dealers offered to convert the cars to carb. If Chrysler did it, the dash will show a dot between the ODO and MI wording on the digital odometer. As well, the driver's door will have a tag showing the mileage on the car at time of conversion. The mileage then showing on the dash is SINCE the conversion. Overall, Chrysler converted cars were done 81-83 and were very comprehensive with changes made from front to rear where needed.

    I worked at Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler dealership from 85-91. To the best of my recollection, all three years were originally fuel injected. In fact it was the Imperial where I first heard the term fuel infection. The first year of production was so bad that the carburetor conversion kit was developed early in 1982. Originally an owner could opt to have the dealership install the carburetor conversion for $3,500, or if your car had collected enough warranty work, Chrysler Corp would install the conversion kit under warranty. By 1983 many dealerships across the country were doing the conversion before the car sold.

    I bought an '83, similar situation. Had been parked for 30yrs. Was never converted to carb. Fella bought at an estate sale, couldn't get it running (Chevy guy....his words....still funny), just wanted his money out of it. Am about to watch the vid and see the story. One thing so far is incorrect. The fuel injection was '81-'83. The engine was a standard 318 shortblock with 360 heads and a one-off 360 intake make specifically for the throttle body. Theres no choke well so a conversion with a 2v holley with electric choke is an easy start. Many were retrofitted, especially the '81's as they had issues, being a new system. Mopar retrofitted many of them to carbs at great expense to gov't standards. So now you have what any other 318 carb'd unit had that year. It was a class-action recall. Mine was never converted so I did it myself. You've had the hard work done for you. My question is, since yours has the carb conversion, did they also put standard small port 318 heads on, or just the intake? Mine had 4, yes 4 fuel filters (factory installed) between the tank and the injection unit. I think they were a little concerned about injector body contamination. Two of the filters were in an area on the passenger side underneath, at the rear of the front fender. I don't know if this was retained with the carb conversion.

      I was a Chrysler mechanic in 83 and had the misfortune to work on those god forsaken TBI’s. The recall fix converted the system to a 2 Barrel carb. The conversion kit included fuel lines, fuel pump, fuel tank, and the entire exhaust system complete with new catalytic converters, new air filter housing with that stupid computer bolted to the side. We did several conversions in 83 and 84. They were an absolute pleasure to drive when they were converted, until the stupid computer on the air filter housing would decide to cease working

    Derek, this is a great car. Excellent job saving this one. Regarding the fuel injection switch you noticed early in this video, in 1981, Chrysler issued a recall in response to widespread issues with the factory system, replacing most with carburetor conversions by the dealer. It would be very rare to find an Imperial of this vintage with the original fuel injection I suspect.

    If I remember correctly, due to the issues these cars had with the fuel injection, Chrysler allowed a swap over to carbureted. There are very few that didn't get the swap, but they are still out there. I vaguely remember my aunt telling us that they offered the swap whenever you brought it in for service, she had hers done. Apparently, it wasn't a recall, but a discounted service. I would like to note that although after 78 Chrysler had a poor design to their rear main seals, and this was a problem that was easily corrected by using the older style rear main seal, the oil sending unit on Chrysler small blocks is located right next to the distributor on the rear of the block behind the intake which was also an issue. Most typically if you saw oil against the firewall, the sending unit is the culprit. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      Early days of fuel injection? It’s funny, how we saw different waves of FI come in. Some old European cars, like Mercedes, has it licked in the 50s. The German engineers cracked FI in their warbirds, where the Allies were still on carburettors. Look up “Miss Tilly’s Orifice” for a genius tale of invention by a rare, lady fuel engineer in WW2 Britain.
      In U.K., we were still riding motorcycles on carbs deep into the 80s. I bought a 2006 Suzuki and that had FI. It was amazing. Zero maintenance for the 15 years I owned it. And you could get the fuel maps tweaked for whatever you wanted by a shop with a dyno. Impressive tech, when I works.

    I just randomly found vice grip garage a couple months ago and I am hooked.
    I was a 16 year old when I bought my first car in 1972 which was a 67 Firebird with the little 6 cylinder ohc.
    Previous owner didn't do proper maintenance on it and when I bought it my late father showed me how to take out the engine and he walked me through overhauling it. Your interaction with your youngest son reminds me of my late father and I relationship.
    Those are some of most endearing memories of my father, him coming home after working at the Chevrolet plant during the day and working on that vehicle with me. Wish I still had that vehicle because of the time we shared.
    Watching your videos bring back alot of memories and I look forward to watching one each day since I am now retired
    Your family and you seem like wonderful people. Being selfish but please keep making those videos if you can.

    Dereck, that was an epic journey. I am a WISC boy who lives in AUS, come and visit I will hold the camera while you resurrect old Aussie cars.
    A guy doesn't smile that much in everyday life and then Vice Grip garage makes a video about an obscure car from the past buried in an old barn. Your antics make me smile. And then laugh. And then cry. You are a master story teller, love your work, no wonder you have so many people who follow your adventures on the backroads of America. Thank you

    Derek Could not stop watching this 2 hour program and this has given me an idea of pulling a 1972 -T Bird out of my garage that has been sitting since 1986- the last time it drove, Had this car brand new and took my wife on our honey moon in 1976 all over the southwest when gas was just a little over a Dollar a gallon . I really appreciate the showing revival of this Chrysler

    All three years were fuel injected from the factory. I bought a used 83 when I was a much younger man. The fuel injection unit and all associated components were under a much larger air cleaner assembly. I remember that was critical to keep the air cleaner properly sealed for correct air/ fuel mixture. Loved that car

      Agreed, but have you noticed the wide angle lens lately? Can’t see nothing, zooming in myself and it goes grainy because of it, feel the shots used to be tighter. Saw more of what mattered.
      Not that the scenery isn’t beautiful, but I swear on my left foot something is different.
      Hope he makes a recovery ❤️‍🩹 with the knee

      @@agoogleuser704 Yeah, i've noticed that when you get someone else who doesn't fully understand your content style, especially when it comes down to editing, the storytelling aspect of these videos goes down quite a bit. I loved the classic derek style of editing, when it was just him. But, as these channels get bigger so do budgets. Why would i edit myself when i could hire someone to do it for me by just having them go back at my previous work and emulate it. It's a sad reality i've seen too many times.

    • @HunterTalksWeather
      @HunterTalksWeather 6 місяців тому +4

      And, to your point. A wide angle lense isn't really needed here. If i wanted to nitpick i'd say 99% of dereks audience only care about the car, and himself in frame. It doesn't matter about the visual of the barn, or anything like that. You also deal with perspective issues due to the fisheye effect on most wide-angle lenses. Most people within dereks audience are likely older, and it's much harder to see what you WANT to see when your viewing a long winded video like this one. Again, i understand why. It's just made the channel less desirable when you add upgrades to things that don't need to be changed.

      @@agoogleuser704 A wide angle lens means Derek can spend less time moving the camera.

We are grateful that you can earn enough $ to continue - but whatever it is should be double as you devote body and soul. The best compliment that I can give is this, Thank You!

    Derek, what a terrific adventure. A few times, I shook my head, thinking “This fella just won’t quit”. And you were right not to. I’ve been watching for years. You’re rarely beat. At 2.43, you hit the road & I tell you, that American guitar lick just has a guy who likes America, but is from olde England, very moved. That sound says distance. Thank you, I enjoyed that rescue very much.
