That’s funny my headlight motor did that too when I disconnected my batt for the chip. I’ve read that it’s normal. So much tech in this car for 91 was beyond other cars by 10 years..get the Dave McLellan book “corvette from the inside” he designed and engineered this car. Dude is a genius
Will definitely check out the book! I think for some reason the headlight receives a random signal from somewhere when the car comes back to life… first time it happened though!
Yep, a few cars do this...once power is interrupted in some ways...perhaps the extra stored electricity is sent to another electronic part, like some kind off bleed. My Renault scenic, the wiper motor clicks when ever any power is interrupted. And definitely the Corvette is way too advanced engineering and solidity built, from what I have learned from this series.
It's actually when you re-apply power to the car that this happens. The headlight motor tries to find the stop position when the battery is reconnected. Disconnecting the battery cannot be done properly (like purely ON / OFF), when you unscrew the contact, it will apply and remove battery voltage system many times in a second or so, leading you to think that this happened when you removed power, until you fully remove the contact lead. If the headlight motor rotates for quite a lot of time when reconnecting the battery (>4s), this means that the plastic bushings are almost dead and reduced to plastic powder. I had the same issue on mine and I found some white/beige powder in the engine compartment below the headlight (the motor gasket was also cooked). Get a fresh kit on Zip Corvette for exemple (HDL-418). You do not need to replace the gear usually, only the plastic bushing (and gasket if yours is done). We'd love a corsa exhaust for the ZR-1 but that will be one of the last jobs as a "treat" once everything else is done! I feel for you doing that right side oxygen sensor. I did mine. That plug is a pain. I have the DRM chip in mine and the Corsa exhaust. Sounds beautiful when it's actually working and running properly.
That bogging of idle could be vacuum control fuel enrichment for tip in. Might be worth doing a vacuum check see if there’s any leaks or failed pcv letting in unmetered air.
Since the new Lambdas have gone in it seems to be responding to throttle a lot better. We think it could have been fuelling badly, they probably got damaged when the car was running poorly with the bad computer. Its guess work really, we're just happy it is running well!

As an avid viewer of your vids I have to tell you guys to buy some proper disposable gloves , buy the orange ones they’ll probably last you a couple of days per pair, the blue ones you’re using are made by the same company that made chocolate fire guards 😂 Keep up the good work 👍
You say when the shocks don’t return they’re bad. Interesting that, I just fitted a set of brand new koni dampers which did not return when compressed. Ride good.
It might depend on the damping rate of the shocks, these ones feel really good - you can easily tell when they’re not working properly! What car do you have?
@@Auto_Funk Polo G40. The shocks are Koni sport with dampening adjustment by compressing the shock fully and turning using the pistons. I wound them full soft, then back a turn. Didn’t seem to make any odds where I set them the pistons did not return to full stroke themselves.
You could have cleaned all four shocks in just a few minutes if you would have used.....instant starting fluid. Try it. It dissolves dried oil and grease almost instantly.
Ah we didn't have that to hand, we did soak them in brake cleaner, didn't seem to touch it. The whole underside is covered in that fine sandy stuff that farmers make tracks out of and it turns almost to concrete.
All good! I was told to leave the stock chip in my ZR-1. Have the performance one if I ever need it. BTW came upon this book, "the heart of the beast - history of the lt5 v8 and zr-1 corvette by anthony young" , the other day. Only about $100 U.S. if you can find one! Would be nice, preservation/history-wise to have with my car. But $100...........?
Thanks Jim - That book sounds amazing, we will have to try and find a copy. Sounds like a great coffee table book :) The Heibeck chip definitely seems to make the car run better, we will talk about it in our next video!
Can’t imagine why you’d go through all the effort of removing the 4 shocks and assume they’re okay by pressing on each I would send them off to Bistein for a complete rebuild
Because it's just two guys filming their hobby and they don't have unlimited funds If the shocks work then that's £450 Llew can put towards the bill for repainting the red Corvette
The burgundy C5 comes out a different budget because Llew owns that C5 outright. We share the ownership of the ZR-1 but yeah it is £450 that we can save towards something else! Tyres, wheel refurbishment, ice blasting, somewhere to store the car out the rain etc... the list is long... :D!
@@Auto_Funk sounds like a good plan. I still think it would be interesting to hear a little more about quality of ride on old shocks vs refurbished. That said for just cruising if there is still rebound and compression I’m sure they are fine. I missed if the adjustment works or not from inside the cabin?
Its like a mix of the two... its a Street Cup... its a like a cafe racer'd from the factory Bonneville. Its not mega fast, but its fast enough for me to bimble around on. The left shoulder was done when I was putting the sub frame back on the Boxster last year, I must release that on my channel as I did film it. I don't know exactly how I did it but the night after I was in Agony. I think it was probably yanking the frame into alignment as it was a struggle to get the frame far enough forward... or over reaching under the car. Over a year later it is still not right, can't lift my arm up above my head. Probably slightly torn a tendon. The right shoulder is more recent and bike related, I did it coming off a trials bike going up a slope, I "super-manned" it which was hilarious I am told! That did my right shoulder and didn't do my already damaged shoulder much good either... (Sticking to on road bikes from now on)! So I just need to be careful with them now.
@@Auto_Funk try visiting a Qualified Bowen or Emmett Therapist. Depending on the injury they may be able to help, myself and those I've referred have had great results. 🙏❤️
100%! I don't ride them well, it was a trials bike experience day. None of us had any trials experience and nearly all of us came off once or twice. Generally you're never going more than jogging pace so oddly, its a lot safer than motorbiking generally. We were instructed to go up the side of a motorcross jump, probably a 50 degree angle 8ft climb, successfully did it twice and the third time I applied a little too much throttle and the bike wheelied and came back down on me at the top of the slope. Folks that ride them well seem to defy physics, great respect for the sport.
It might be worth a shot that I (Chris) have suffered from nerve pain for years now. Sciatica especially and they seem to specialise in that. I've always thought its something not being in alignment or a muscle being too short or something of that nature. What injury did you have? @fuzielectron5172
@@Auto_Funk it’s like they don’t get it at all to them it’s working and fine or it’s broken! I was working on my Porsche 987 at the weekend and had all the comments.. the other one is will you wash mine after when cleaning your car.. keep up the good videos!

Couldn't agree more, the amount of time somethings been replaced for new and its been worse than whats been taken off/failed within 1/4 of the expected life span!
Surprisingly to us, C4/5 corvettes onwards are nearly entirely metric. Besides a few small oddities (the side battery post being 5/16ths or something).

Y’all are doing an amazing job, it’s fun to watch you guys accomplish things working out in the elements. I just cannot believe how rusty things get over in England. Nothing rusts here down in Texas! I went to a Corvette gathering Saturday that had over 100 Corvettes ua-cam.com/video/wUQ6aNDC0S4/v-deo.html
We're very envious of the weather in Texas... :D! The C4 seems to have not suffered with the rust much. Well built cars (better than they're given credit for)! That is a LOT of Corvettes in one place! Seems there is quite a big mod scene over there too! Over here they are largely standard.
While I admire your enthusiasm in getting the vette back on the road its been painful watching like the blind leading the blind from the first episode with jonny running after the vette hoping it would start 🤦♂️ just so wrong. And those shocks you should get them tested to make sure the adjustable spring rate dampening is working correctly inside the shock you will not see it by plugging it in and looking at the shock 🤦♂️
Thanks Pepy! We don’t pretend to be experts! Either way it‘s a fully functioning road legal car so we’ve not done too bad considering the budget, lack of resources and not a lot of knowledge! We established the shocks *seem to be* okay therefore the budget allocated for rebuild can go elsewhere for now… eventually they will be checked professionally…
Sorry guys, but I don't want to say "I told you so " But....."I told you!" It's a ZR1... The reason your getting all the views is because it's " special!" (Worlds fastest production car and all) Invest in a garage with a ramp. Dry ice everything.

Ages them a bit doesn't it... :|!
@@Auto_Funk I just checked: 485€ per shock front (part number 20-070274) and 210€ per rear shock (part number 20-070281)
@hendrikwagner5957 interesting! Rebuild here in the UK by Bilstein is €160 per shock so quite a saving!
@@Auto_Funk I was 14 years old as the wall came down, grew up behind the iron curtain, right at the wall to Berlin (about 150m away.
seem to remember a Doug Rippie zr1 in old car and track magazine possibly? Blackwidow?
We will have to do some reading up :) It would be interesting to know what map was in that chip... And how it compares to stock and the Heibeck map!
Maybe get a impact guys 😅
We have one! I don't know why we didn't use it tbh! Would have made light work of it!
As an avid viewer of your vids I have to tell you guys to buy some proper disposable gloves , buy the orange ones they’ll probably last you a couple of days per pair, the blue ones you’re using are made by the same company that made chocolate fire guards 😂
Keep up the good work 👍
You're right, we do need decent gloves... I think they also make the chocolate kettles too!
Hi Nigel! You're right! When we're all out of these ones (it won't take long!) we will replace with some decent ones! :) :)
@@Auto_Funk The road soil may have mortar like binders in it. Like concrete.
Can’t imagine why you’d go through all the effort of removing the 4 shocks and assume they’re okay by pressing on each
I would send them off to Bistein for a complete rebuild
Don’t the oil inside degrade over time. I guess for cruising around it’s irrelevant?
Because it's just two guys filming their hobby and they don't have unlimited funds
If the shocks work then that's £450 Llew can put towards the bill for repainting the red Corvette
Rember you need to drive it to get the new chip to "learn"
Calibrate was the word I was looking for😂
We think so to! We will find out very soon! :)
Cant anderstand way The bredbands lamda are so bad placad.Shud be 10 Deegre Angel.Good look wed thes Car!!👍❤️
Do you mean the angle of the sensor? Must have been designed like that for a reason! Who knows! :)
Yeah they're not the most convenient.
@@Auto_Funk Angel yes! Kondens well go in tou the Sensor!! The Angel most be 10 Degres.Sorry spell lake hell..
What do you guys do for work just curious
Chris is a teacher (college) and I (Llew) work in business development for a vision tech company involved with industrial engineering/automation…
Are the 2 middle exhaust pipes unused?
Yup. Totally blanked off aside from a tiny hole!
@@chrisbaker121924penny pinching! 🙂
Broken shoulder, motorcycle accident? Love the triumph, is that a thruxton or a speed twin?
@@Auto_Funk You're braver man than I for even getting on a trials bike, the guys who ride them well are from another planet.
What was the Trouble Code you mentioned.
It was a code 31 cam sensor fault, although I couldn’t film it because it disappeared!
Have you had neighbours walking past with dogs yet saying “is it broke again” constantly getting it around mine 😂 proper annoying..
All the time 🤣🤣🤣
@@Auto_Funk it’s like they don’t get it at all to them it’s working and fine or it’s broken! I was working on my Porsche 987 at the weekend and had all the comments.. the other one is will you wash mine after when cleaning your car.. keep up the good videos!
Ha! Love a 987! Chris has one and I used to own one which I went to France in which was mega 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 the best one from the neighbour is “you can wash mine afterwards”!! (Chap with the Hilux who incidentally has never, ever washed it!!)
@@Auto_Funk yeah I saw his blue one looked great! Hopefully your neighbour might improve his car taste soon..
If you replaced them, probably chineseum parts would be shxt 😂
Couldn't agree more, the amount of time somethings been replaced for new and its been worse than whats been taken off/failed within 1/4 of the expected life span!
Being US are they not 1/2” and imperial sizes? Or was it made in Germany or something?
Surprisingly to us, C4/5 corvettes onwards are nearly entirely metric. Besides a few small oddities (the side battery post being 5/16ths or something).
I thought Chris was in his 40's 🙈
I’m not far off! 😫!
Poor Chris!! He's a young buck compared to me (Llew)!
Tbf I have never really studied Chris beyond his hair and glasses but he does actually have a very young face.
Love the videos chaps keep up the good work.
Surely they're not original shocks? After so many years surface rust would be more evident.
We think they have to be original since they were made in West Germany (means they're older than 1992)... Surprisingly nice aren't they!
Y’all are doing an amazing job, it’s fun to watch you guys accomplish things working out in the elements. I just cannot believe how rusty things get over in England. Nothing rusts here down in Texas!
I went to a Corvette gathering Saturday that had over 100 Corvettes
ua-cam.com/video/wUQ6aNDC0S4/v-deo.html
We're very envious of the weather in Texas... :D! The C4 seems to have not suffered with the rust much. Well built cars (better than they're given credit for)!
That is a LOT of Corvettes in one place! Seems there is quite a big mod scene over there too! Over here they are largely standard.
@@Auto_Funk yes these car clubs here in the North Texas area go to amazing lengths to customize their cars! Spare no expense
In future, when faffing about beneath a shoddily supported car, place the removed wheels between the car and the floor.
It might just save your life.
You are right, that's a great tip and next time we're under the car you'll most likely see us doing that!
Sorry guys, but I don't want to say "I told you so "
But....."I told you!"
It's a
ZR1...
The reason your getting all the views is because it's " special!"

Invest in a garage with a ramp.
Dry ice everything.
Thanks Clint :) The plan was always to get it to a base level "on the drive"... You will be very pleased with the next update we reckon!
Wow your jacking off a will of an old car that’s not good to do used the wish bone mounts instead
No that was o mount bush looks good to me not dry or cracked so it’s good I would use that again
Thanks Halfords for the jack socket and ratchet 😂
The construction of the Corvette is kind of different to most cars. The whole sill is a box section and quite solid! Its more like the chassis rail is on the outside edge of the car.
