11:14 Okay, so here’s what happened here. Those four-pointed star things aren’t just decoration. They actually have collision… kinda. See, with every wall, floor, and ceiling in the game, collision is programmed separately from the visible geometry, even if they are the exact same shape. And unfortunately, whoever did it for that spinning thing screwed up, and it never got caught even before the second version released in Japan, the least buggy version. Rather than rotating about its center, with each of the points located at a platform, as it appears to, it instead rotates about one of its points, which is at the center of the four platforms, while the center is located at one of the platforms. It is this invisible collision that he kept hitting. If he had only jumped to an adjacent platform rather than waiting on the same platform, he would’ve been able to make the jump. Of course, unless you’re paying really close attention to the time since it loads, which also requires knowledge of when it loads, and you know ahead of time which platform the spinner is centered at, there’s no way to know which platform will block you like this ahead of time. Still, if he knew about this, he definitely wouldn’t have lost so much time to this one glitch. Also, this explains why he kept getting squished and taking damage on each failed attempt, which wouldn’t happen from bonking an invisible wall. Because of the shape of the geometry he was hitting, he was actually hitting an invisible _ceiling,_ not a wall, and a moving one at that, causing Mario to get crushed. Pannenkoek has a video that shows the true collision for this object, along with a bunch of other floors, walls, and ceilings.
@Filiolus You’re welcome. I saw this video over a year ago, and then later saw pannenkoek’s video, but I never put the two together until recently. Still puncayshun had less 8s when the final battle starts (in that speedrun where he fails the end) than the new record of 1.39.57.68 so who know where this can end...

I've personally never even attempted a speed run, but man watching these people, they are just so dedicated and talented it's insane. This game probably takes the peak of skill IMO with just how long it is, and how accurate every little thing has to be. I personally love watching speed runs which the runner is doing a run where there really isn't glitches involved, I'd much prefer precise talent and clever game mechanics over who can break the game the most.
Actually, as of December 2017, the 1:39 barrier has been broken. Batora is currently in third with a 1:39:53, puncayshun is in 2nd with a 1:39:36 and Cheese05 is the current world record holder (pending verification) with a 1:39:19. Meanwhile, the TAS time is now at a 1:20:41.

I was in twitch when cheese got the wr you show. I've seen Five wr runs, and that one was the most exciting. I was so excited for him. He was doubtful for a while.
This was awesome! I wish there was a video for the other categories. There's no mention of Xiah, who is probably the best player of this game currently. If he ran 120 he would take it, easily.
It's so awesome seeing all of them grind out and finally get it. I feel bad for Cheese but that's the nature of the beast. Also your videos are amazing!
There's a twitch channel I enjoy watching, and I bought a pack of post it notes for the sole purpose of covering up the chat while I'm watching (it's only a small part of the screen, but still equally cancerous).

Sounds good, thanks for the reply. Look forward to the next video. The folks on r/gaming seem to enjoy them as well. Keep 'em coming!
I will join your lurker army.
Every like is one of me, watching that shit from start to finish, hungry for the next.
Love ya shit, man.
I like how you aren't super hype and lively when you talk, PLEASE don't change!!!
This video is amazing, I'd love to see an updated version with Salt's new style of narrative and edition tho 💕
This speed running video series is fantastic. I hope you continue to make more. You got yourself another sub!
cheese05 got a new WR everyone! 1:40:05! Not 1:39 but still getting close!
It's now almost sub 138
@@PolarBailey Sub 1:39*
Well now it is 1:37 by Liam jesus. This video got me into SM64 speedrunning this was so long ago
You should do more of these world record progression they are awesome
Tomy Bravi hi mugi
And the 1.39 is done by cheese, congrats haha
Still puncayshun had less 8s when the final battle starts (in that speedrun where he fails the end) than the new record of 1.39.57.68 so who know where this can end...
first video..half buzzed. Sat through the whole thing. good shit man, you got a new sub/fan for what it's worth
awesome video! please make more of this genre, this is fantastic!
The world record as of january 19th, 2024 is 1:36:21 by Weegee. With a 1:35 seeming near
Thanks for the update!
4:51 'there were so few mistakes' ... as he headbutts the above platform and misses the jump
Simon Coulthard I thought he was pointing out a small mistake on purpose.
Reginald Verrier He definitely was. His point was that the run was imperfect, so he was illustrating that.
Explain the speedrun that uses half an A press. I dare you.
But it isn't a speedrun.

>implying building up speed for 12 hours to go fast enough to go into parallel universe isn't a speedrun. Christ, you must be TJ """""""""""""""""""""""""""""henry""""""""""""""""""""""""""" yoshi himself.
But first, we have to talk about parallel universes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
So genuine quesiton, what is funny about the parrallel universes joke? It just seems to be the exact same punchline every time. Doesn't it get boring?
I've personally never even attempted a speed run, but man watching these people, they are just so dedicated and talented it's insane. This game probably takes the peak of skill IMO with just how long it is, and how accurate every little thing has to be. I personally love watching speed runs which the runner is doing a run where there really isn't glitches involved, I'd much prefer precise talent and clever game mechanics over who can break the game the most.
Incredible athletes! Thanks for making us feel like we were able to actually be there and experience all these emotions in real time.
1:39!!!

3:04 Is probably the best music choice for a part in any video I have ever seen. Well done.
I really enjoy your commentary. Probably the best for these types of videos.

Time to update the video :)
Time to update the video :)
It would be nice, If you could put links to the runs in the description.
Agreed
Check the pinned comment.
Your videos are an absolute treat. I truly hope you continue to make them.
I was in twitch when cheese got the wr you show. I've seen Five wr runs, and that one was the most exciting. I was so excited for him. He was doubtful for a while.
And now it's a 1:40:05
And now it's 1:39:57
And now its 1:39:28
And now it is 1:38:59
Oh sorry for spoiling, my time machine went crazy.
RowanVdv77 Well according to my time machine it's 1:20:41, but that's post-singularity so idk if it counts
4:13 he has finally got wr again, wow
Cheese just got 1:39 y'all!!!
I preferred it when you expounded on the tricks and strategies and their evolutions more
dot555666777 it is hard to go into detail about every strat when the run is this long.
Since this video, three runners have had a 1:39 run, Cheese05 included. Current WR stands at 1:39:19. Looks like the hunt for 1:38 is real.
Pause the chat a few times starting at 7:23 and enjoy the racism.
why would you even look in the direction of a twitch chat window, do you *want* cancer?
TriHard
+KingHalbatorix King has got it right. Twitch is the most cancer Community I've ever seen
Sam Cyanide yep
There's a twitch channel I enjoy watching, and I bought a pack of post it notes for the sole purpose of covering up the chat while I'm watching (it's only a small part of the screen, but still equally cancerous).
I just wanted to pop in to say these videos are amazing, and you should mke more of them :)
you have a great way to build up suspense and tell stories, dude
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this type of video so much - Good job.
as today again the wr is 1:37:53 by liam
I want to see another 120 star video to commemorate the person that gets 1:37. I might watch it 5 times.
Liammmm
15:33 lol he finished rainbow ride at the same time of his current wr!
Ha
These videos are always so awesome to watch. I know this is an oldie, but thanks, Summoning Salt.
I don't watch anything about speed running yet I find these videos fascinating. Please keep doing them.
