Prior to Myles hitting 5"40, there were about a dozen of us tied at 5"47 for quite a while in the early days. It was the most tied record ever in the game.
Maxwell Frengle My most lucky shortcut finding would likely be Toad's Turnpike, due to how early it was (1 month after release) and because I hadn’t yet "unlearned" my SMK habits of hitting R before colliding with a wall. In SMK, that was necessary to minimize speed loss, but in MK64 it led to discovering some of the most unusual physics exploits. Had I not discovered the Turnpike shortcut as early as I did, it might not have been discovered for quite a while later.
geoff clouse You’d be surprised at how many top level players will choke on the KTB cave cut in tournaments, even when nobody yet has a Lightning Bolt.

@@s1n_er387 I don't keep track of playing time at all, so hard to estimate. I started in 2008 (=10 years until this WR), if I take an avg. of 2 hours per session and 3 sessions per week (varies a lot depending on season of the year), you get around 3000 hours of pure time trials in a decade. I could be far above that with GP stuff, kart meets and whatnot. It took me 3 years to get my 1st WR by the way.
When he finally broke sub-2 minutes, I actually teared up a little bit. Between that and the Olympic record comparison, it astounds me just how much effort these people put into breaking impossible records for relatively little recognition. These guys should be in a public hall of fame and paraded through the streets!
It's funny, I almost always cry watching them (atleast a little tiny tear at certain moments) just due to the sheer dedication of these people, it's very inspiring. As someone who used to speedrun years ago and lost the sting, it's really amazing to see people just... never give up. Sorta. It's special.
Definitely. Summoning Salts skills as an editor and documentarian have improved dramatically since he started this series. The ability to weave emotion so well into something like this takes a lot of skill and effort.
I didn't watch the entire quest video, but all the alliance thing reminded me of the Butcher Army from the Dream SMP Except that the alliance succeeded
I love the way Summoning Salt sometimes drops the narration and lets the record speak for itself. The ending of this video is the perfect example of that. Thank you for another wonderful recap!
He did it while recording a tutorial to help the newbies. That's Karma. Only not really because Karma is a much more high-level concept that involves reincarnation. But yeah, Karma!
It happens when you clip through the voice over to finish the segment faster. The game doesn't know what to do when you clip through the voice over but haven't hit the death barrier so it breaks the geometry for a few seconds. It's a relatively new, risky pro strategy in development, I'm amazed he pulled it off.
I was actually getting very anxious and hopeful for Matthias at the end, even though I'm still somewhat of a rookie when it comes to speedrunning history and the big figures of speedrunning. I'm very glad he got his sub 2 minute run, and I wonder when or if it will ever be beaten. Keep up the great content, Salt!
I watch A LOT of UA-cam, and have seen all his videos... saying that this is one of the most honest respectful and supportive comment sections! Its refreshing that we can still see talent and appreciate it. Being a teen in the 90s I've played all the games, and he makes it feel like it's my first time all over again. Your nailing it man, keep it up and good luck in your other ventures!!!
LMTR14 you’ve replied to every comment I’ve seen so far, and no, it is quality. He is right and 90% of UA-cam videos aren’t exactly useless, just not well known. But this guys videos are very well done and you should at least admit that.
LMTR14 if you dont like a good documentary about the best games in History and how the community of those games did everything to get those 0,1 sek off the score, just dont watch it.
Damn Salt, two world record history videos in one week is incredible. I want you to know that your work really helps me a lot. I deal with paranoid schizophrenia as well as borderline, and putting on one of your videos when I'm suffering from hallucinatory psychosis does a lot to ground me in reality and keep my body from seizing and such due to how soothing your voice is. Really I just wanted to tell you that the content you post completely free of charge is wonderful and to tell you to keep up the work buddy!
This felt like a documentary. A documentary that you can enjoy traveling through time and meeting awesome people surpassing each other with insane skills. A documentary that puts you in tension more than the moment before an exam. Awesome work man, incredible video.
You should do documentaries on the speedrun history of the other MK64 tracks, because this and the Choco Mountain vid are really great. The 90’s aesthetic fits really well.
I'm actually not too surprised. If you've ever tried teaching something, one thing you might find is attempting to teach others can often help you continue to improve as well. At least that's been true in my case
I just found this channel, and thank god. It’s so entertaining! I don’t speed run, have never had much interest in it, and barely play Mario kart games. Yet these videos are so intriguing and interesting. Good work.
There is something undefinable about the tone of voice and delivery with Summoning Salt’s commentary. It’s honest to the core, and I can’t put into words how much I appreciate this. Superb video as always, good sir!
honestly dude, even though you do this as a hobby, i just wanna take some time to say that what youre doing is fucking awesome and you seriously do an amazing job on these vids, even if some of them end up to be memes when i first got into speedrunning, i stumbled on your channel and saw your progression on punchout, as well as some of your earlier videos. when i say that ive been waiting for years for your videos, it's no joke. when i first saw your progression vids, i was in the middle of my sophomore year in high school. i'm a freshman in college now, but being able to see your videos grow in quality and seeing you mature as a creator still ranks you up on the "quality vs quantity without becoming a sellout" list in my books. even if you made this video specifically in five days, the passion that you always put into your work is still super visible. you can see this and tell that whoever made it did it with some thought and a lotta heart. editing is mind numbing work, but just know that you've made a lot of people's lunch breaks better, bathroom breaks a little longer, and 3am cereal sessions more memorable with what you put out. keep doing what youre doing my guy. you're gonna do great things. take care kiddo
Well said. These videos let me escape from reality for the 20-60 mins. I just get lost in the history of gaming. Something ive been absolutely passionate about since the early 90's. I remember playing mario kart64 with my brothers/cousins when it first came out. It has held a special place in my heart for over 20 years now.
Imagine being the CPU. You go around the race track legit, worry about red shells, think you are winning, then find out someone won before you can complete a single lap because of lakitu favoritism
I think I found out why I love these videos: 1. it’s a blissful way to get lost in something that is completely inconsequential in real life. 2. There’s (usually) such a competitive comradery amidst speed running communities, it’s so wholesome. 3. It’s always great watching people do something really really well. 4. Summoning Salt is excellent at presenting this material. 5. Much more.
Summoning Salt, I’ll have you know that I watch a shit ton of YT content per day. Others watch Netflix, I watch YT. And there are few channels that get me as excited on a new upload as yours. Keep it up man, your videos are awesome.
Dan and Matthias where battling a lot, because Matthias was trying to get 32/32 WRs on NC 1 lap and 3 lap at the same time, and Dan was in an organization called Anti 1.000 Alliance, which was created to stop Matthias from getting a 1.000 record/track ratio
it's funny, watching this track played over and over made me realize how beautiful it is (at least for an n64 game). the dark blue sky and the color of the snow look really pleasing to the eye.

What if they were both being worked on at the same time, and they finished at a similar time as well?
I’m not sure, just a guess.
My friends, it just keeps happeni-- sorry, wrong channel
Prior to Myles hitting 5"40, there were about a dozen of us tied at 5"47 for quite a while in the early days. It was the most tied record ever in the game.
What was the shortcut that you were the most lucky to find?
David Wonn in the old days I was happy just to hit the cave three times without losing a run on koopa troopa beach...

When he finally broke sub-2 minutes, I actually teared up a little bit. Between that and the Olympic record comparison, it astounds me just how much effort these people put into breaking impossible records for relatively little recognition. It happens when you clip through the voice over to finish the segment faster. The game doesn't know what to do when you clip through the voice over but haven't hit the death barrier so it breaks the geometry for a few seconds. It's a relatively new, risky pro strategy in development, I'm amazed he pulled it off.
I was actually getting very anxious and hopeful for Matthias at the end, even though I'm still somewhat of a rookie when it comes to speedrunning history and the big figures of speedrunning. honestly dude, even though you do this as a hobby, i just wanna take some time to say that what youre doing is fucking awesome and you seriously do an amazing job on these vids, even if some of them end up to be memes
when i first got into speedrunning, i stumbled on your channel and saw your progression on punchout, as well as some of your earlier videos. when i say that ive been waiting for years for your videos, it's no joke. when i first saw your progression vids, i was in the middle of my sophomore year in high school.
i'm a freshman in college now, but being able to see your videos grow in quality and seeing you mature as a creator still ranks you up on the "quality vs quantity without becoming a sellout" list in my books.
even if you made this video specifically in five days, the passion that you always put into your work is still super visible. you can see this and tell that whoever made it did it with some thought and a lotta heart. editing is mind numbing work, but just know that you've made a lot of people's lunch breaks better, bathroom breaks a little longer, and 3am cereal sessions more memorable with what you put out.
keep doing what youre doing my guy. you're gonna do great things. take care kiddo
