10:00 Here I am, in 2021, watching a random video on UA-cam when suddenly a post I made on GameFAQs 17 years ago shows up on the screen. I gotta say, I really did not expect that. I remember doing a 16 star "run" back then, but I actually didn't remember posting about it on GameFAQs, which made it even more surprising.
Gamers in 1996: "One day, maybe someone will beat Mario 64 in under an hour!" Speedrunners now: *start game* "YAHOO YAHOO YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA SOLONGAYBOWSER"
There wasn't much glory or fame to speedrunning back then, there was just the respect and admiration of a tightly knit, trusting group of friends, so there was really no reason to lie or cheat for good runs.
What I see when I see old speedrunners posting their time without any proof is just how much the people in this community trusted each other back then (and also the fact that video recording wasn't very widespread in the early 2000's which also helps create this trusting environment since you ....... kinda have no choice most of the time)
this joke is overused. it's posted on like every speedrunning video. the version I like more is "We are leaving in 5 minutes" "Ok, let me just beat this mario game real quick" "cmon we're leaving" "frick i didn't beat it in time"

Nothing is more satisfying than a glitchless run, people who've mastered a game, and clearing challenges that took me hours in the blink of an eye.. But nothing shows complete mastery more than an any%, in which players learn more about games than the people who made it, truly making it their own.

Bruh....how do people find glitches...like for real, imagine: "I'm gonna back jump on the stairs, I feel like it's gonna glitch" "I'm gonna put this rabbit here and jump behind it, maybe it's gonna push me through the wall"
The guys who discovered BLJ actually answered this. The younger brother was just a little kid at the time, and was messing around with Mario because he found Mario's noises funny, by pure chance he did a BLJ and found Mario's noises hilarious. The older brother then did it on the endless staircase to try and make his younger brother laugh, and completely by accident he skipped the staircase. They sent a letter to Club Nintendo in 1997, which took 3 years to publish the trick.
Tbf using holdable objects to clip through walls is common in this game. I've had bob-ombs push me through the fences in Bob-omb Battlefield just by accident. The BLJ origin story is great tho
I think people just tried stuffs in video game and then found out that jumping backward seems faster. Then they decided to utilize the infinite stairs to check how fast they could go and then discovered that famous trick by accident
The runner featured in that clip was on a WR pace in the 120-star category before he fell victim to an invisible wall glitch. There's a full explanation in SS's video about that category.

I just discovered your channel my friend, and I'm hooked on learning more about the games I played as a child. I hope you find the time and energy to keep it up!
Yeah, the reason it took people so long to realize it its because its basically undetectable to untrained ears You gotta give them credit tho, they might have not completed a legitimate speedrun but their editing was so good they managed to keep the fraud up on the internet for more than a decade
So, BLJ speeds are possible because while the speed is building up negatively, the clamp was only checked on the positive bound. It's simply something the programmers didn't think about. If they did, It would get down changing literally one line of code, which is checking that the abs(speed) < maxSpeed, instead of speed < maxSpeed. It could have been literally 5 characters in the game's code, to change the history of sm64 speed running, and make all this impossible. Talk about the butterfly effect.
Great video. But frankly I don't think it's right to say "a TAS is done by a computer", because you can't credit months of a TASer's hard work on an emulator to a computer. A TAS is not done by a human in real time, but it's still done by human with an emulator.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how much time an effort goes into these videos (research, finding videos, editing, etc). Really makes me smile how genuine these are. Great job Summoning Salt.
I always love the more serious and cinematic parts of these videos showcasing the most insane things. That long bout of silence with just the music in the background playing on top of the endgame cutscene when the TAS beats the game with 1 star... it's ethereal.
Wow, it's incredible how this went from over an hour to under 10 minutes over the years. I loved hearing the history of sharing tips via forums way back in the day before you could just easily UA-cam it all.
he mentioned in the video that the 1 and 0 star was develop to be a TAS only and after ppl get to do it in RTA. you can't descredit TAS of the history pf speedrun.
Dear Mr. Salt: Tanks buddy. Life is a real pain in the ass right now but being able to kick back after such a horrible day and enjoy stuff like this really makes my troubled life that much more tolerable. I really appreciate what you do. Thank you.
I never realized how crazy speed running old video ganes is until i started watching your videos a while back! Thanks for always coming out with quality videos man!!
These videos are always amazing to watch. The amount of detail you go into the run is so engaging to watch. I never knew that the runs changed this much over the years.
I can honestly say I’ve watched these Mario World Record Progressions over and over again. They never get old because I love how SummoningSalt is so informative and gives the audience a good watch. This is probably my 10th time watching this video. I love em.
Recently stumbled on your videos and I absolutely love them as an outsider to the speedrunning community. One thing I will nitpick is you say that the developers' time wasn't wasted because of all the different categories, but it would have been nice to acknowledge other styles of playing than speedrunning or at least a chuckle to indicate a tongue-in-cheek nature of the note.
I love it so much that the spongebob supersponge ost made it into this video! I could have sworn I recognized it and had to look through the google doc (which I also appreciate)
Yo man i'm blown away by your videos, i just discovered them recently when i first saw the 4-2 super mario video and then the sonic adventure 2 battle video n stuff like that. I just love your way of narration and making the audience feel excited about these things. Keep it up man, love your stuff!

16 stars is the minimum required to enter Bowser In The Fire Sea. Since it’s impossible to go upstairs and into the basement without the proper keys, all 3 bowser fights are mandatory. The tricks used in 0 star runs are extremely precise and difficult to perform, so most people prefer 16 star runs since they’re much easier and longer runs
The most shocking thing in this video is that a guy posted "in 5 days, I will reveal a revolutionary new tactic", and then he actually came through.

UA-camaccount177 I was looking for this comment haha
I always love the more serious and cinematic parts of these videos showcasing the most insane things. That long bout of silence with just the music in the background playing on top of the endgame cutscene when the TAS beats the game with 1 star... it's ethereal.
Developers: You need at least 70 stars to beat the game
Players:*Beat with no stars*
Developers: AM I A JOKE TO YOU
I would've said "Look how they massacred my boy.".
Yes.

Peach: My parents aren't home
Mario: *YA-YA-YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAHOOOO!*
Her parents are never home, you idiot. They're dead. That's why she keeps getting kidnapped.

This will remain one of my favorite games for this reason. There is so much packed into this one game cartridge.
Wow, it's incredible how this went from over an hour to under 10 minutes over the years. I loved hearing the history of sharing tips via forums way back in the day before you could just easily UA-cam it all.
Production value for these videos are top notch. Thank you sir and please continue to provide quality videos as such.
Nice video. I wish you would mention the 1 Key TAS though.
I dont like TAS personally, so i didnt mind.
he mentioned in the video that the 1 and 0 star was develop to be a TAS only and after ppl get to do it in RTA. you can't descredit TAS of the history pf speedrun.
Rockymann27 TAS is cool wtf lol
The question remains... Can you beat the game with -1 stars?
Thats a nice joke
Ethan Buxton
Yes, but first we need to talk about parallel universes.
I can beat it in half a star
Go through a one star door backwards?

Dear Mr. Salt:
Tanks buddy. Life is a real pain in the ass right now but being able to kick back after such a horrible day and enjoy stuff like this really makes my troubled life that much more tolerable. I really appreciate what you do. Thank you.

Man, the more i learn about speed run games, the more i apreciate it
I love it so much that the spongebob supersponge ost made it into this video!
I love how even though we know the outcome you still somehow make us feel in such awe
Best YT series going not close
I just stumbled upon this channel a couple days ago and haven't already watched a dozen plus videos. Makes me really interested in speedrunning/gaming world records. Good stuff bro

Trying to remember why it's 16 stars, is that how many were needed for the Bowser fight or one of the star doors?
16 stars is the minimum required to enter Bowser In The Fire Sea. Since it’s impossible to go upstairs and into the basement without the proper keys, all 3 bowser fights are mandatory. The tricks used in 0 star runs are extremely precise and difficult to perform, so most people prefer 16 star runs since they’re much easier and longer runs
@@seangiglio okay, thanks!
