3 Disturbing Updates in Teen Maddie Soto's Murder Case

- It's been a month since Florida teen Maddie Soto disappeared and was later found dead. Her mother's boyfriend, Stephan Sterns, is in jail facing more than 60 child sex crimes charges. Some of those charges involve allegations that Sterns molested Maddie. This week, Kissimmee Police updated the public on the status of the investigation into Maddie's murder. Sterns has been labeled the prime suspect. Law&Crime's Angenette Levy talks with "True Crime with the Sarge" host Joe Giacalone and lawyer Tim Jansen about the new details in this episode of Crime Fix - a daily show that delves into the biggest stories in crime.

We need more outreach programs designed to educate children of abuse on the resources they have for getting help. Even then, most of these kids are trained to lie to CPS, so it's such a hard problem to fix..
I can't imagine not being at my child's birthday. If i had to work and couldn't get out of it, then the birthday party would be on a different day.

Were you there? None of us know how she reacted when she first realized she was missing and then found out she was murdered. Everyone deals with things and trauma differently

She was just way too calm, took too long to call the police and was so casual during that interview she did before Maddie's body was found

Mom lied and said she saw maddie getting ready for school at 8am. But stephan was throwing away hee stuff at 735 and had her dead in his car at 819. Mom is LYING
Like many other similar tragedies, the mom is protecting the BF over her own child! She is as guilty as he is. I'll bet she was well aware of what was going on, and either went along because she didn't want to "lose" him, or because her brain fell out of her nose, somewhere along the way. Disgusting people.

@@Spacecadet499, I know it’s been brought out from her Fß posts that she suffers from mental illness, bi-polar disorder if I remember correctly. So, your statement could be true. I don’t think we should convict her in the court of public opinion until there’s evidence found that shows she bears some guilt in the matter. Her response in the interviews could very well be due to her mental health issues. One thing a behavior analyst pointed out is that even though her response is odd to what we typically think a parent’s response should be, she also isn’t trying to fake emotions in an effort to appear innocent, like Stephan did. Her behavior has been consistent in all her public interviews, which suggests that is her natural reaction. Maybe it’s odd, but it’s GENUINE, and that matters. I wanted to rake her over the coals at first too, but then I had to rethink my initial reaction, because it was based solely on my emotions, and not facts. If the public is going to nail Jen Soto to the wall based solely on her response being different from what they think it should be, without waiting to see the evidence, and learning more about Jen Soto as an individual, then that’s just wrong. We need to stop and put ourselves in her shoes, and think how we would feel if the public was making us out to be involved in such a horrible act without any evidence. I don’t think any of us would like to be convicted in the court of public opinion without any evidence of our guilt. I know I wouldn’t. The truth is very important to me, so I am not going to judge Jen Soto just because she didn’t react the same way I think I would respond, or just because she didn’t respond the way I think she should have. That’s wrong, and I was wrong for doing it initially. It’s so easy for us humans to just react based solely on our emotions, when we should be focused on learning the truth and seeing the evidence before we jump to conclusions.

I think she was consoling him because SHE took her life and took away his favorite breathing s÷x toy and told him to help cover it up or she'd point the finger at him with the photos and videos proving he was a monster

i was abused as a young child. my mom ONLY knew because i told her i was in pain. that's it, that's all. It is completely possible for a mom to not know if the kid doesn't say anyting. My mom took all steps after that to keep me safe. Hospital visit, police, no contact with perpetrator etc.

I wasn't convinced by the grandmother's reaction either. These people were living a relatively expensive life and not a full time job between them, they all let Madeline down and her mother is just a pathetic lump.

Judgemental much a lot single moms are not your stereotpyical trying hard for their lives types some may have some unknown help granted I am not a fan of Jen but her family supprted her by givong her a home which their is nothing is wrong with that.
I am a single mom and living peacefully but again I have heavy help supprt from my village aka my family whom I live with so no need to pass judgment on a single parents income and lets not forget about the single moms who come from well off households but oh no lets only think about the stereotypical single mom's oh brother..
As a survivor of long term childhood SA, the last few minutes of this episode really speak to me, not only as I wish I’d had parents who had protected me in one way by encouraging that open dialogue, but also as I think of todays parents, hearing this very valuable warning advice to protect their children, whom hopefully they love enough to be brave enough to do so.
I talk to my children about predators all the time.
There’s gotta be a fine line between teaching children about this and over doing it and making them scared of life.

How about just don’t move so quickly into a relationship cause you’re desperate? Don’t leave child with these men. Boy or girl. I’d have about a 2-3 year period before living together or trusting a man near my child unsupervised. Not because they are men but because you never know. Love your child first not your hormones.

I think she died sometime the night before. You don't think of discarding the backpack and laptop an hour later. That's the kind of thing you think of after you've been mulling over the situation a while. Even if the mother wasn't involved, her first instinct was to back Stephan's story up. I bet that was her first instinct with everything, which is why Maddie couldn't go to her. Either way, mom sucks too.

I heard the girl they saw wandering in the church parking lot and going to the school was a different child altogether. They seemed to have accepted the child to help with the missing report. Even Jen said the video was too grainy to tell who it was.

I am a person with delayed reaction to grief. Reality hits me differently than other people. My brain will put a stop on the traumatic information and put it where it belongs. If I need my wits? They’ll show up. If I’m going to cry? It could take me a month. When my father died? It took me a month.
ALL THAT went out the window when my son died of an accidental overdose. I WAILED AND WAILED! The most haunting cry you will ever hear are the cries of a mother whose child has died.

It REALLY outrages me when people refer to Stephen Sterns as Maddie’s “step father”. He wasn’t even her mother’s boyfriend. That was a lie the mother told in the beginning. They were broken up but Stephen couldn’t/wouldn’t stay away from Maddie. I ASSURE you Maddie would NOT want this monster referred to as her step father. PLEASE respect the truth and victim’s memory.
The other thing that's interesting and many seem to have missed, is that Sterns said in the TV interview, after 'dropping her off at school'...that's the last time 'we' saw her.
I doubt they are going to charge him until they get the autopsy results find out how she died, even if they don't have enough evidence to charge him the other charges are enough to keep him behind locked up for the rest of his pathetic life, mother that don't protect there kids from pervert boyfriend are just as guilty for not stepping in and stopping the abuse it's horrible when you see mothers that care more about a low life boyfriend than there kids

One of his former room mates said he knew Stephan had underage photos/videos on his computer. Yet shrugged it off and didn’t tell anyone. Till now….

We don't know that. We don't know that at ALL. They have not said if the photos were all of her or a mix possibly others shared with him. We only know they found a ton of them. They never give details because of the nature of the crimes and the innocent victims involved. These pedophiles rarely get off on violating one child. Yes, this is the issue for MANY children and I would venture to guess is the case here.
I strongly believe she knows. Maybe that's their break up reason but in the end she still chose him over her daughter. I can't fathom this kind of parent when there's are people who can't have children of their own. All children deserve a parent but not all parents deserve a child. It makes my blood boil.
I helped hand out flyers around the town when this girl went missing. I texted the family and offered to help further but never heard back. Such a tragic outcome!

I am not one to rush to judgement but I cannot help but to place myself in the mother’s shoes. How would I feel if it was my 13 yo daughter? How would I react at 1, 5, 24 hrs missing? I would be insane. There’s absolutely no way the mother didn’t know. I have a bad feeling about this case that she won’t be charged. I’m sick for Maddie.

When my son passed away, we didn't get the autopsy results for 6 months. I don't know why the toxicology results take so long, but 6 mo is a long time to try and grieve, while not having any definitive answers
They said "at least some" involved Maddie - they could all be her or there may be others too. Nothing has been released to indicate either way yet.
How does a child have an open conversation with a parent when the parent(s) are complicit? This sets the child up to not trust any adult.

Stop calling him a stepfather. The mother was not married to him. That label belongs to married couples and the step parent is a contractor. He is a monster. I will like to know how he contributed to this girl upbringing. Other than causing her a lot of pain.
I know it's terrible, but he refers to Maddie as his stepdaughter himself many times in his reddit posts and whatever ridiculously childish Tamagotchi forum posts he made. We've seen them.

What if mom came home from work and caught Stephan abusing Maddie, BUT she immediately thought that her daughter was trying to seduce her long time boyfriend, thus snapping and ended up killing her. After the fact, Stephen just helped Mom cover it up, but never told her the truth. Just thinking outside the box.
The mother found out what he was doing to the little girl and chose the boyfriend. The mother killed her and the boyfriend moved the body.

I agree with what one of the gentlemen said about the mom being so lacksadaisy about looking for Maddie. One day my son didn’t get off the bus as expected and I FREAKED! My heart dropped into my stomach and I was on the phone immediately to the school while on the way to the school! Luckily, he just missed the bus. But I swear if they didn’t lay eyes on him, I would have been on the phone with the police immediately! Something is fishy.
