Your sharing of knowledge brings backs memories of what my father had shown me quite a few decades ago. (I'm 64 yrs. old) There have been improvements in paint products (i.e. clear coat, etc.) that you've expanded upon. Great job! You're an inspiration to bring out the d.i.y. in almost any car guy.
letlive - I'm not convinced that clear coat can be considered an improvement, unless you're the sort of person who can afford to buy new cars and replace them every few years. Decades ago, it was just duco and that stuff seemed to last.
So, a tip i learned years ago about if you need to clay bar. If you take a plastic bag or cellophane wrapper and put that on your hand then run it along the surface of the car, you will feel the imperfections much easier than just using your bare hand.
Guy 1. tells about inflicting scratches to the paint right after he rubbed thoroughly the dirt laying on the paint surface right into the paint. 2. would wet sand rock chips and scratches so deep, that they definitely reach down into the primer or even to the bare metal, so they can not be actually corrected without putting paint on the surface first 3. would use the scratch remover after compounding and polishing, when in fact the coarseness of scratch removers is between the compounds and polishes, and because of that using a scratch remover (besides being totally pointless at this point) would just ruin the previously achieved polish. Very professional. A lot to learn from this guy.
Gábor Bérczi exactly what i was thinking. Also no prewash and the lack of grit guards :/ I wouldn't call him a professional detailer but good job nevertheless
I love the simplistic and clear way you explain the methods you use. Not too much waffle but enough to get your message across very clearly. They have helped me more than the other similar videos I have watched.
Thank you for this! I got everything you mentioned here, started this today - the small thin panel above my driver side door - before the roof. A BIG improvement already! The roof and trunk will take more time, and more passes, I'll tackle that tomorrow.
Dude! Your videos are the best of its kind on youtube!! I I painted two cars with nasty damaged clear coat and spray painted them by watching your vids. thanks so much
I have a Ford F-150 pickup which I would love to do some work on since the truck is not looking like it did when I purchased it over 5 years ago. The body is in great shape, but the paint is dull now. After viewing your video I know now what I can do to clear up the finish and get it looking like it did when I first got it. The previous owner was a truck driver and didn't spend much time driving it, leaving it looking like new. The color is black, and I will clean the outside so it looks like it did when leaving the factory. Thanks for showing us this video, and I hope you are having a nice weekend.
I enjoyed your video very much. I have a black vehicle with clearcoat in similar condition. I know I have my job cut out for me, but watching you bring back that finished impressed me.
Thanx Ratchets that was one of the best instructions ive seen..."to the point!". - my cars paint exactly!!! & you took the trouble to explain the DA polisher - i had no idea how they worked 10/10
I love this video. I’ve been looking to detail my old toyota but I haven’t been sure what tools I really need to do it, since the clear coat on the hood is pretty much gone after almost 20 years of daily driving.
Amazing. One of the better diy detailing videos I've watched. You've made me realize there's a few things I've done wrong and now it's time for me to go redo my black pathfinder. Órale
great video... thanks. Many buffing ideas here that others don't bother to tell about ! And the most dramatic result likely would have been leaving the car under the shop lights, which shows so much with dark colors ! Nice job !
Right on brotha...i subscribed to ya cause i appreciate your honesty....i don't know how many pointless videos ive painfully watched to know theres alot of uploaders out there that have no business uploading videos.....yous are informative , to the point, and genuine....👍keep up the good videos.
Great tutorial video without long boring talk. Straight to the point.thanks man. And I always loved that classical music, for some reason I imagined conductor of orchestra as a guy that looks like Doc- (Emmett Brown from Back to the future film). With energetic movements, all concentrated.lol
What a great video. I just came from a car wash that destroys my clear coat in the winter and I think I will be adding your techniques to my spring cleanup repertoire.
wow, i polished my car over the weekend and gave up because i wasnt seeing too much improvement, i now see that i was doing it wrong. i was afraid of dry buffing so i would stop polishing once the compound got a little clear clear but now i see if have to go till its clear.
Remember the taped lines and masking tape is for the video demos to show before and after results. In real world applications just do sections at a time. I do sections of the vehicle. If I get called away and can’t finished in a day I am good. I recommend the zonal technique as in rear center and front. Typical four door sedan for example. I will start with trunk/rear bumper/ quarter panel area. Wash, clay, rinse, corrective action for scratches swirls etc..... my basic theory is if I run out of time I would rather have let’s say 1/3rd of the vehicle fully done than then 3/3 of the vehicle halfway done. Remember once you clay you lose all the wax and sealant protection so important to get the buffing compounds swirl remover, polish, glaze wax and sealants applied quickly. Work quick but safe and correctly.
Nice work, I did that at one time for a hobby. Allot of work but the results are worth it. For the life of me I cast remember what it was call but the finishing compound was black and ultra fine. it was good stuff. I like that polisher looks much easier to use.
Some advice for beginners in polishing : junkman 2000. He has made a whole video series on that topic. Now don't get me wrong about this guy over here. He is doing a great job and we are all thankfull for the knowledge he is sharing. I just think that if you are new to this there are some details you may want to know before you start because it is super easy to damage your paint instead of fixing it.
Hey guys been in tire business 20 years. This is how you calculate the correct air pressure for different tire sizes. Most trucks go bigger sidewall tires so the air pressure needed is lower due to increased volume. This is the biggest problem on light jeeps. You can calculate from the original tire size. If it calls for 35 with a tire that holds 3500lb at a max of 44. 3500÷44 = 79.5 lb per psi. X 35 = 2784. If new tire is 4200 at 44 = 95.45lb per psi , take 2784 ÷ 95.45 = 29 lb of air in the new tires. Meets stock load rating.
If any of you are going to try this, I detail as a side gig, try Sonax 4/6 CutMax not any of the Mothers or other brands stuff (Leaves chalky residue and makes for more work with clean up). It will really make a difference using a D/A. Leaves next to no residue and the clear just beams. I personally would never use a wool pad either, the Sonax stuff does the job with a foam pad and has very little chance of burn through even on 5-6 setting. (It even polishes up plastic headlights/taillights if you're game enough).
Keep a set of dedicated microfiber towels just for paint. I have dedicated glass and paint towels......for a beginner I recommend the Porter Cable 7424 series Dual Action orbital buffer/polisher. Pretty forgiving for beginners but not overly complicated or expensive.
My front fenders look like frosty glass and the clear is completely opaque. It’s very uniform and not splotchy looking like this car. It scratches off with a fingernail. What is the best way to remove it without damaging the paint underneath? I’d like to be able to prep the bare paint, maybe spray an additional coat, and then clear it.
Hello Iman, I've been following your channel for while and have found them extremely helpful and often entertaining. I really appreciate your insight and honesty of what can sometimes be a daunting responsibility of car maintenance. I try what I can to upkeep my vehicle, often times with the aide of your videos. They certainly have saved me time and money from taking it to shop. But there are task and maintenance work that I just don't have the tools to complete. Would you be able to do work on subscriber's vehicles? I'm in SD and probably not too far from you. Thank you for your diligent work, it's well done.
Wow you did a great job. Where had that car been ? It looked horrible. You probably need a lot of time and patience to do this. I would however, would gone the extra step and do wet sanding too !
I am finding clear coats are very very hard to deal with on sooo many levels. I sure depends on what was used AS a clear coat. I sure preferred the old school paints, as they did a MUCH better job of not only sticking to a surface but lasting as well...sigh...oh well....nice informative vid, and great music too!:)
Should have hosed it down to pre soak..get most of dirt before swirling dust and dirt particles around the paint. You can also claybar while wet. It will provide additional lubrication along with the claybar detailing lube. This also prevents the added step of wash rinse dry clay and dry again. Keep the clay bar lubricant ahead of the bar and remember there is no such thing as too much lubricant. Wipe off with separate microfiber towel/cloth. Remember to tear the ID label off the towels. One less thing that you have to worry about getting caught under the towel and reduces the risk of more accidental scratches.
thanks for the great tips on how to do a car paint job!! I'll start today on my Ford Fiesta. I need to add a steel putty layer too because scratches are too deep
For whoever is thinking of doing this on their own I recommend a one-stage correction instead of cut then polish using different pads. Why, because it's a pain in the ass and I know what it's like doing a whole car and that's just a COUPE. I reccomend buying a 6 inch groits MICROFIBER FINISHING pad paired with Meguires M205 or any medium cut finishing polish.
I always spray off the hood First before I put anything on it weather its cloth mop washer or whatever ..... Its a good idea to take a few seconds just to remove any loose dust or dirt.
At which point do you throw away the clay bar? It seems it would be difficult to hide enough of the dirt simply by kneading the clay bar so it could be used on another section without scratching it further.
You used some old school products from meguiars, they have better compounds and polishes now. M100 or M105 followed by M205 would've been a great combo. Microfiber cutting disc for the compounding, yellow foam for the 205. Wool pads and M85 weren't even designed for dual action machines, but it did an ok job.
You made it look really simple. Good video! Saved for when i do my old Ford Explorer. Question... have you ever done a video and it just didn't work out? Like whatever you were working on just didn't turn out exactly as you had planned? Or how about a blooper/behind the scenes video?
nice work and video, but you killing me with the cord from the polishing machine dragging over the hole bonnet of the car :D, Personally I always have it over my shoulder so I don't scratch with the dirty cord already polished surface ;)
i have always been scared to cut my car myself but i really want to give it a try now, definitely just a foam pad and a slow speed but it definitely doesnt look as scary as i imagined
"That is not as dramatic as I would have liked"
I LOVE how honest you are haha. Definitely have a new subscriber.
Yeah that made me chuckle a bit

Any car owner* :)
In my experience clear coat is not an improvement. It is too thin. Even worse the paint basecoat is even thinner.
So, a tip i learned years ago about if you need to clay bar. If you take a plastic bag or cellophane wrapper and put that on your hand then run it along the surface of the car, you will feel the imperfections much easier than just using your bare hand.
Maybe a rubber glove would work also

These videos are great; straight to the point, honest, and very helpful. 👍🏼 keep them coming.
You got me, I thought you were Chris fix with that title!
I did too
I like that this guy isn’t yelling too

YOU are an excellent teacher and cover all the bases. Very, very helpful.
Thanks so much!!
Thanks Imon, you're not only an excellent automotive technician but an awesome auto body tech!
I just want to say thank you. Not just for informative videos, but for explaining and demonstrating so frickin well. Kudos
Amazed by your attention to detail in this video. So informative for someone with little knowledge of detailing.
I enjoyed your video very much. I have a black vehicle with clearcoat in similar condition. I know I have my job cut out for me, but watching you bring back that finished impressed me.
The man in this video should be a teacher if he isn’t already. Best clear cost fix video I’ve found. Thanks.
Does this actually work on clear coat that has a haze starting ? Everyone says only painting works ?
Best comprehensive explanation of this process I've seen yet. Nice job!
Best polishing video ive seen. Very eloquent and well spoken dude.
Thanx Ratchets that was one of the best instructions ive seen..."to the point!". - my cars paint exactly!!! & you took the trouble to explain the DA polisher - i had no idea how they worked 10/10

What a great video. I just came from a car wash that destroys my clear coat in the winter and I think I will be adding your techniques to my spring cleanup repertoire.
You should rinse the hood before you wash so you don’t scrub dirt into the paint
Why is that dirt scratching into paint matter since he will polish it anyway.
Where's your video?
wow, i polished my car over the weekend and gave up because i wasnt seeing too much improvement, i now see that i was doing it wrong. i was afraid of dry buffing so i would stop polishing once the compound got a little clear clear but now i see if have to go till its clear.
You didn't leave a link for the elbow grease. LmfO!
r8ersazfan 1 Yes, I Was Looking for The Link For The Elbow Grease too, I Think Maybe He Forgot to put it.
Amazon
there’s no elbow used when i do the job😬
LMFO=laugh my face off??
He didn't wet sand in this video...
I Followed this step by step; used all the products; found some elbow grease... Audi 2009 looks amazing.
always wondered what a clay bar exactly did...nice haircut by the way

I need to bring my car over to you. You're good at what you do
Great work, just the effort alone, with the polishes and tools...
Wow what a difference!! Show us the final finished product, when you touch up the chips too, please?
Love that I'm searching for a solution and the car you're working on looks just like mine.

Thanks so much This was clear instructions that can be done easily, with elbow grease !!
I'm not usually into German vehicles but I'm digging this project. Thanks for the awesome vids

Do we need to spray water in every steps before sanding or buffing,,? Nice job. tnx
That was a Funny Reveal, glad you have a sense of Humor..Great Vid
My car is only 2016 but the hood looks just as bad as that 2005 Audi. Looks horrible. Glad to know it's fixable! I'm definitely going to try this.

Bravo maestro, thumbs up for job and "opera" music as well !
This channel is great!
Very good video, thanks. How do I avoid introducing scratches while trying to polish the car with compound?
You can’t, that’s it’s purpose
you should make a kit and sell all those things, id buy that in a heartbeat, now i gotta go add all those things to my amazon cart lol
You used some old school products from meguiars, they have better compounds and polishes now. M100 or M105 followed by M205 would've been a great combo. Question... have you ever done a video and it just didn't work out? Like whatever you were working on just didn't turn out exactly as you had planned? Or how about a blooper/behind the scenes video?
Fantastic job and video. Thank you.
nice work and video, but you killing me with the cord from the polishing machine dragging over the hole bonnet of the car :D, Personally I always have it over my shoulder so I don't scratch with the dirty cord already polished surface ;)
i have always been scared to cut my car myself but i really want to give it a try now, definitely just a foam pad and a slow speed but it definitely doesnt look as scary as i imagined

You're welcome boy
I hope you have some connection to higher education because you that special talent that makes you an excellent educator.
