  • 2018 Audi A4 Sport Pkg. APR Stage 1 w Luft Technik CAI. The first part of the video shows compressor surge after letting off throttle under low boost. The sound is very cool, IMO, combined with the diverter valve sound. The latter two clips show the compressor surge while the car is under boost at medium throttle input. Around 2500 to 3000rpm you’ll hear the surge. One clip is on the freeway the other is on a back road.

Hey dude, that's exceptionally normal when u have a CAI after get tuned. Grab a drop in K&N filter instead would get rid of that sound. This sound is not a problem anyway, not harmful at all compare to the real compressor surge. I've had the same sound with yours a long time ago, nothing happened but getting stronger now.

You are off map here it seems! Were you putting your foot in it here? With that Intake it's breathing well a little too well. It's delivering more boost than the engine is calling for at the moment.
Remedy is easy either shift into 7 and avoid it all together. Or go back into 5 maybe even 4 as I'm not familiar with this power band. This will increase the demand for air and you'll be right as rain. This is why it won't do it under WoT because you have plenty of demand for that boost.
    Hope all is fixed eventually!
It's very common place on high boost small compressor housing turbos.

Just to be clear, is the flutter coming off throttle a problem too? Or just the flutter under boost?

Hey, was wondering if you had a chance to fit the OEM airtake to see if the surge goes away?

Do you think removing the intake will solve the problem?..I have an IE intake on my B9 A4 with the stage 1 tune...I rarely get the surge but don't want it at all..what are you thinking of doing to prevent this?..

Colby the thought has crossed my mind a few times. It’s interesting to hear from someone else with the tune and a different intake. I may just revert back to the stock air box. It’s frustrating to think a certain type of intake would cause compressor surge, over others. When you say rarely, how rarely?

Its weird..I only hear it in like 4th gear at around 2-3k rpm with only half throttle...

Colby that’s exactly when I hear mine too.

I took off the intake and put back the stock air-box/inlet tube..have yet to hear the noise..have not been driving the car often since im not home..im going to try putting the silicone tube with the stock air box this weekend..ill give u feedback.

That on-throttle surge is really bad dude

V.Vega Its not terrible but it’s certainly something I’m not thrilled about either. I am going to get APR to view my video. Hopefully they’ll have a fix. More to come.

Mister Irrelevant It'll usually kill a turbo real quick. Hopefully you get it sorted out. I doubt audi will warranty it when they see it was tuned

V.Vega I emailed APR with the video link and I’m waiting for a response from them. In the meantime I’ve done some research and it appears compressor surge is more severe in certain situations than others. The worst possible situation being WOT at higher rpm, of which I do not experience with my application. The least severe situation is when releasing the throttle, which, from what I’ve read, doesn’t really hurt your impeller shaft and bearings all that much, over time.

      Any update?

TROY APR tech watched the video and they essentially said to drive around that part of the rev band. Admitted that other cars with same set up and mods experience the same compressor surge. At this point I’ve learned to shift around it. Tune is great and I’m hoping for a DCT software upgrade to help alleviate it some.

Downshift, i hear surge but i also hear wastegate flutter , the ts ts ts sound when in high gear around 3-4 k rpm . It cant process the extra boost at that gear, its off the map. If youre in high gears try to stay away from 3-4k or else it will flutter.

Any luck with the factory air box? I wanted to get the tune but now I'm skeptical.

Nickodarius I still haven’t switched back to the factory box. I can see why one would be skeptical from the video but after a few months you really do learn to drive around the surge.

@@midwestbmw1292 Are you still driving around the surge or have you found another solution?

Nickodarius I actually don’t have the car anymore. I drove it with the surge right until I got rid of it.

Nickodarius unfortunately the car was totaled. It wasnt the driver mod, though lol.
