I found your channel from the sim-pit! You have some great content! I would also add another mistake of new sim racers is not moving out of the way for a clearly faster car approaching, or if you are a lap down move over so the leaders can race. Once you get experienced and are racing for position you would appreciate back markers to do the same for you.

What part of moving over to let some one past if car behind is on same lap with you , is racing ? There is an reason why its Sim RACING after all. What is all this looser talk on this dudes channel.

If two people are racing for position, it's the front driver's privilege to decide whether or not to move out of the way. If the guy behind me is extremely fast, deciding to fight him and defend the place is not always the best choice, but its still my choice. It means that I have to drive under pressure and at risk of a mistake - a spin is worse than giving up one position.

    • @teemumyyrylainen9247

There is only 1 situation where i can see its good idea to let some one past you, its when hes on different pit strategy. " fresh tires or less fuel with similar tire life" . Only when it is absolutely going to ruin my own race to defend against some one, then i will move over or rather liftoff on straight for second.
These people don't understand the meaning of racing. You are supposed to fight for the win or as good position as good as you ever can. Within the rules !!!!
I will not support asshole driving style of weaving side to side , pushing opponents of the road on straight , crashing on purpose or even brake testing on openwheelers. But i will shut the door on every one trying to just pass. I will take my line that is often inside and hold it no matter what, if opponents is not on side by side at apex, i will shut the door and make him lift off or drive half way of the road. It is what race drivers do on every race every time anyways, and thats how iw learned to drive. That is the way i drive. I am fair, yet tough. those who drive against me will learn how i drive and good ones learn to drive against me and not try like an idiot to side of me and then bitch about it when i close the door or take the defensive line on corner, forcing them outside.
If all that matters you is how fast is your pace at ultimate lap, drive qualify only , or practice against ghost cars. Racing is not for you.

If a driver is over a lap faster than the other than they shouldn't have troubles getting by them. They are on the server racing as everybody else. Lapping only becomes a problem if the slower driver isn't driving predictable. Which is the point to make to new players, be predictable. No matter if you are slow, just drive in a way other people can reasonably anticipate what you are going to do next. And don't stand on the brakes in the middle of the straight because you got scared by a blue flag.

I agree. No choice but to pass in tight spots. Some of my best passes have been out braking in hairpins. Obviously not something noobies should do, but a skill that should definitely be learned. You can't always count on passing in long straights with draft.

Your bonus rule, don't pass in bad places? Thats down to driver style. I like to worry the driver ahead of me, and I'll stick my nose out every chance I get (If there's no one within attacking distance of me) even if I don't have a chance of completing the pass just to pressure the guy in front into making a mistake. Moved through iRacing MX-5s with that strategy and it's brought me several podiums as well.

#11 is great and all, but it isn't always intuitive to a new racer where these good pass/bad pass zones are. In my opinion, it's something that you learn over time...often resulting in carnage, but learning by trial and error is still learning I suppose. It would be wise, for a new racer, to learn these zones by racing against AI honestly, especially seeing how vastly AI has improved over the years (Assetto Corsa, for instance, has fantastic AI at this point IMO)
The only thing I'd add, something I found very difficult when I was just starting out (and still, to some degree, find difficult) is understanding the difference between braking for a corner during a hotlap and braking for a corner during a race, particularly when there are people in front of you. It's obvious on paper - if there's a guy in front of you braking for a corner, you're going to have to brake earlier than you normally would, especially if you are riding his bumper. However, when your brain is in race-mode (especially before a certain level of racecraft skill has developed), you might think "That curb is my brake point" and end up plowing into the guy in front for whatever reason. I think this is the principle reason behind the almost unavoidable T1 carnage in almost every online race.

    • @DanDiMaggio
      @DanDiMaggio  6 років тому

    • @ped7g
      @ped7g 6 років тому +6

LOL ... what do you think you actually see from inside the helmet? 22" with regular FOV is not that bad (depends a lot how close to the display you sit, that will affect which FOV is "regular", if you are far from display, then 22" is too narrow of course). Can't be directly compared as you can turn your head in real life, but it's lot closer than people who didn't race in RL imagine, and unless you want to exercise your neck muscles all the time, the real view is quite (surprisingly) limited too. Most of the time I rather rely on my hearing to know whether there's a kart next to me, or somebody is dive bombing in braking zone, because once they get into my view it's usually too late to react (I mean in RL, on computer you have usually all kind of hints, like the radar thing in this video, or mirrors).

still - I repeat my comment:
      real life: you drive
sim racing: you race, and in addition with no G-Forces and so on which even with VR doesnt give you the speed sense/feel like in a real car and thus 200 km/h still feel slower than in real life even with VR.
Difference racing vs driving should be pretty clear, especially because he already told it in the video. In real life in the sense of just driving in your city instead going onto a racetrack, you dont have to care for braking points, managing to hold the line and not going offtrack, managing acceleration and braking, pit strategies and so on. You just drive and you even drive that slow that you can even make adjustments on your car hifi without losing control of your car :D

Everything else looks faster or slower then it actually is and will not help your driving. Just cause people u know use the bonnet view doesnt mean its the right way. You obviously haven't been racing for very long. Watch every good player in a race or in any racing game and notice they aren't as aggressive in the first lap or two as they are in the other lap. It doesn't matter which simulation style game you play, none of the good racers do this.
Why? For starters, your tires need to heat up before you attempt to go full throttle. As he stated earlier, there are too many cars on the track and everyone needs to make it through, so aggressive drivers WILL cause wrecks, every, single, time, without fail.
It's like morons who decide to make passing attempts on the first damn corner when everyone should be treating it like a yellow flag and proceeding from there unless people make serious mistakes and you can pass them that way. It doesn't mean DON'T pass it means that you shouldn't pass and if you cause a wreck then it's on you.

Solid advice - making some of the mistakes myself in iRacing, especially too little track time before a race and too many series at the same time. With the ovals both asphalt and dirt are doable, but even here it is hard to be top without proper car and track time. However road and RX demand more road time, knowing the tracks by heart and pushing it. Your best advice, survive the first three laps, sometimes impossible with all the hot heads going for position and not giving any room to anyone, ruined many of my races and I really do my best to give room and let them pass - they are bound to crash anyway along the race.

I agree with all but 2 sort of. The seating position and h shifter. Seating position I think comes down to how tall a person is in real life. I always move a seat pretty far back and the view up, because I'm 6 foot 2 and that's how I sit in almost all cars, seat back all the way, very upright back position which gives me height.
The manual shift as a beginner, that truly depends on if a person knows how to drive a manual in real life, I used to prefer auto, had a little experience with manual cars and now drive a 13 speed semi truck for a living all day. I now prefer the h shifter lol. But I use paddles when the car has them to be true to the car. If someone does not know how to drive manual in real life, then I agree with you, use the paddles because an h shift will kick your ass lol. Great vid.

I am getting into mid-range sim racing (steering wheel, that is) and on the more recent, realistic games. And I agree with the 6th point a lot. My choice is drifting (across games, but still drifting). I also think it's key to keep the game types down to just 1-2, as well since drifting in old NSF and new NSF games, and also GT games are going to get messy since they are so different and all require time. I assume it's a wise idea to spend 80% of your time on a single race type and just 1-2 game types for that race type. For me, I am going with old Need for Speed games (Carbon on PS3) and GT driving (GT 5-6 for PS3), with the T150 Pro wheel/pedal set. :)
Note: once you are good, you can pretty much play any game and race type, not just one. You see good sim racers all the time playing every type, even real racers sometimes race in F1 and a more standard form.

I know I'm not speaking from authority here but I think the tip about not driving h-pattern right away is americo-centric. I'm from the UK and I'm very comfortable with H-pattern because it's what I've driven real cars with, so I have no problem picking up H-pattern in sims and it feels natural and intuitive to me. I think the advice works for Americans who maybe drive automatic cars in real life and therefore don't immediately feel comfortable with shifting on a H-pattern gearbox, but for me it just doesn't make sense, sorry.
The rest of the advice is solid and very helpful :)

    • @cold_fruit

ok I also disagree with point 11 somewhat. Whilst it's true that there are some places which are totally stupid to pass (e.g turn 10 at monaco in F1 isn't a particularly smart place to make a move due to the high speed and narrow track at that point), I don't think there's any such thing as a "no-pass zone" in any motorsport, and I certainly don't recall anyone being given a penalty for passing in a no-pass zone (which you would think would happen if such zones existed). Of course driving dangerously through a narrow section is a dick move, but that's already covered earlier on in the video with advice about not driving too aggressively and having some consideration for the other drivers.

    • @cold_fruit

fair enough, but I guess European youngsters are also quite used to H-pattern shifting, I know when I first got into a car it was already well-known to me how to operate a gearstick and clutch pedal, so I would expect kids who are into racing / motorsports and who come from Europe to have a similar experience in that regard.
I guess each to their own, but my advice to newbies would be to try out H-pattern, but step back if they're struggling with it so much that the experience is no longer enjoyable. It can take a bit of getting used to for some people, but most should find that it clicks into place before long and from then it's just about getting better at the shifting technique and learning more advanced techniques like left-foot braking and eventually heel-and-toe braking.
I should point out that I'm not a sim racer though, just a casual fan who's looking to get more into sim racing in 2018. So I don't speak from much authority even if it sounds like I'm confident in my opinions. :)

The problem isn't shifting with an H pattern shifter, it's doing it in a vehicle that shifts 3 or 4 times faster than most cars people drive on teh streets. I've driven a stick for 15 years but I still resort to paddle because of how crazy it gets in the heat of a race. Last thing you want to do is struggle with a bad shift while next to 3 other cars in a corner.

Best advice for sim anything. Shooters, flight, racing. Let yourself be immersed enough to understand what is threatening. Imagine the next decision you make being performed by you in real life and ask yourself if you’d be confident in doing it. Your life is on the line in real life, and generally have good instinct on what will likely lead to fatality. It’s a good measuring stick for how you can understand best course of action in the sim. Would going for an overtake at this moment make you feel like your life flashed before your eyes in real life? It’ll probably make you wreck then and is not optimal.

Good video with good points. I would only disagree on not using a clutch and an H-shifter right away. One should learn how to properly drive a car immediately, just start slow. If people pass you, let them pass, but still learn how to shift and clutch. It's important, it's necessary, and you will have to learn it one way or another anyways, so why not start straight away? Also: In reality, you also see the radio and the stuff inside the car. Of course, an FOV closer to the track is always better for your performance because you see more, but one could also argue that the hood cam or bumper cam are superior because of that. It's still unrealistic not to see your own steering wheel.

No matter how good someone is there is going to be more learning to be done once we start online. AI behaves differently than a human, and we are going to react with muscle memory. Mistakes will happen, and the more reading I have been doing, I am finding that the tolerance level for someone wanting to get into this hobby, or who just wants to progress is from his current state is next to non existence. Bob Boberton you are definitely welcome online! I think the biggest take away is just being respectful to other drivers. Mistakes happen in a race, it’s fine. A lot of this video is geared towards absolute noobs that have little to no experience sim racing. I used to play a lot of Forza online and it can be a bit of a derby really, people just ram you and punt you and it is what it is. You get used to all the contact. Someone coming from that to sim racing will get in a lot of wrecks. There’s a reason sim games have safety ratings, etc. Coming to sim I my biggest focus was to just race CLEAN. I tend to get a bit over aggressive with overtakes and will certainly end up taking someone out in a sim with my traditional play style. I just had to learn to tame the aggression a bit and drive smarter, not harder. Try to force your opponent to make a mistake. I found by doing this, really learning a car,and track made me much faster than I otherwise would be. Just get online and have some fun!

I will assume you're a beginner at racing in general because racing is in general fighting for positions, yes, but it's also a very strategic sport just like any other. You can't go pushing as hard as you can neither in sim-racing nor in real life racing for many things; one as he stated, if you push that hard all the time you'll eventually make a mistake and all your effort will go down to the garbage can; and two, you'll kill your car, tires will die, you'll run out of fuel, you can get something broke like the gearbox or your brakes. The fact that cars go fast at races doesn't mean the drivers aren't conservative with them sometimes. And about the FOV, if you place yours back enough to see the side windows you'll be too far from what's outside and that's bad for many reasons, you'll be forcing your eyes into trying to get as much detail as they can out of something very small and you'll get an unreal sense of the track. And that's why virtual mirrors exist, you can also use headphones and listen to other cars coming close to you.

I realized these mistakes quickly on Gran Turismo Sport, specifically this track in the video. I went aggressive in the beginning and barely knew the track. I started in 6th and finished in 4th, but that is only because two cars in front of me bottled. I knew after that race that I needed to practice and learn more about tracks

  • @arthurhenriquemendesberte2228

Nice video, but one thing drawed my attention... You said that there are some "no passing zones" in tracks, wich I find your comment a little misleading.
Ayrton Senna once said that "if you have a gap and you no longer go for it, then you are not a racing driver".
The only series I know that does not allow someone to pass in a place at the track are Track Days, and those is pretty much all corners, not allowing you to dispute them.
So, in my opinion, there is no such thing as "no pass zones", everything is a passing zone, it all depends on the variables, such as speed, grip, accelerations and the setup of the car, along with the confidence and the driver's ability to bring it to its limits.

Arthur Henrique Mendes Berté I agree, but for an experienced racer/sim racer. Avoid taking sketchy chances if you are green. It has the potential to cause complete mayhem if you don't know what you are doing. So this was geared towards folks new to sim racing.

    • @arthurhenriquemendesberte2228
      @arthurhenriquemendesberte2228 6 років тому +5

I do understand, but we all know that the only way that you can go from a green racer to an experienced racer, is by doing mistakes that will jeopardize the racing.
IRL, if you have a green racing among the cars, he would do the same mistakes, but it is up to the more experienced driver to recognize when someone around you is going too much aggressive into a corner.
And that is why a FOV that you can see a little bit around your windshield pays so much, because you can avoid those things.
You see, I race with greens at least twice a week, so I can tell them what they made wrong, how they can improve and blablabla, to make our SIM community better and closer to what reality is. IRL, to race a race car, you would have to spend some time training and racing the car up to some RPMs, so you can control it and deal with any things that may happen.
So, what we need is to teach tehm, hands on, on what happens when you do this, do that and such... Set up a "racing school" server, and see the magic happening... :)

Because they don't feel confident enough, or because they are not very good drivers.
I rather risk that, than go back home thinking that I could have forced a mistake and went back home one place higher in the grid, because I thought that "it was too dangerous".
Mistakes happen, and they can have dire consequences for the racers, but still... If you are too afraid of passing someone somewhere, then you are no longer racing, like Senna said.
But I do understand what you are saying.

      "TURN 16 (MELCO HAIRPIN)
“This has been designated a no-overtaking zone for good reason. It is an incredibly tight downhill 180degree hairpin which, if you enter too quickly, can strand you on the outside left hand wall. Cars have been known to “back and fill” to get around. I approach it downhill at around 170kmh in either category of car using either third or fourth gear and brake earlier in the GT. Both cars will apex in first gear."
I would overtake here, mainly on the exit, brake harder on the entrance, and accelerate mid corner, because I would be ending the hairpin in third or fourth gear, while you would be getting in the second...
It is all a matter of how to, and overtaking in a place like that is dangerous, a bit hard, but not impossible.

I don't agree with the 6th and 7th mistakes you talk about. There are numerous drivers that do more than one type of racing and, starting off with a slower class (like spec miata or etc) then moving onto other types of racing will teach you more about car control than in a standard race. Plus it's a good way to not become discouraged of the process.
Using an H pattern shifter/clutch is dependent on your skill as a regular driver. If you've driven Manual car's then it shouldn't be an issue, but if you're the type that has never even attempted to drive one for more than a few day's, you are better off learning car control first.

H shifter is kinda ridiculous point.
Maybe for Americans it makes a point but for Eu for example You rarely drive a car with an automatic.
You are legally required to learn the Manual to pass the drivers test. Unless you have a disability.
Shifting gears isn't a conscious process at this point.
Generally you can spot quiz a driver here : "Which gear are you in?" and it will take them a moment to think or check.
Shifting gears is like riding a bicycle it gets in to your mind and requires no effort or concentration.

@AngryPostmanSthlm2 I'm just starting out in sim racing, with Dirt Rally 2.0 but looking to get into other forms of track racing, I love when experienced vets take the time to give noobs tips and try to help them out. It gives the person more confidence and helps them relax so they can focus on what they are doing and not become too overwhelmed. Coming from Flight Sims such as DCS World, I know how serious people can get about their sim. But in the end we are all trying to have fun and have an enjoyable experience. If a community is willing to help and be patient with new comers then everyone will have a much better experience and new friendships can be born. There's a time to be serious and there's a time to have fun. Any time I see someone struggle in any game or sim I try to help them out because I know first hand how frustrating and overwhelming it can be.

@@SBJ696 I have a few things to say, sir. First, I am wondering which race type you think fits best to flight, drag, F1? And, in turn, which type of racing do you hope to get into most? For me, it's drifting (and GT is okay, also). I personally don't like drag, off-road, truck, or NASCAR, though F1 is okay, also. Speaking of Dirt, though, I do want to get into rallying. That one looks fun, but also difficult. 80% of my focus is drifting and standard racing in GT and NFS, though. The other 20% on F1 and rallying, and pretty much no other on the other forms. I did pick up a few Ace Combat games to see what I think about flight sims, also. Also, don't like bus/truck/farm/bike sims or racing, either. But, I am trying my best to try out all the forms of racing/driving in-game and not to judge, right. :)

Retro Workshop I mostly like Rally/Rally cross but as for any type of track racing I don’t have too much experience with. That’s why I got Assetto Corsa. Although the main reason was to learn the ins and outs of racing itself, however I haven’t had much time to play lately. On top of that I use it as my practice sim to help learn how to use a racing wheel and pedals. Coming from controller it’s obviously very different. If you’re any at all interested in real flight sims, DCS World is one I can highly recommend. Especially if you have VR. IL2 Battle of Stalingrad is another good flight sim if you like ww2 aircraft. ✌️

But #8. Really? If you're more performant with another camera, use it. You don't HAVE to use the cockpit camera, it's YOUR play style, it's YOUR comfort. What if you get a better sense of speed with the hood camera? This will allow you to find your braking zones more easily. This point is completely subjective.

Actually I disagree with number 1. If you do not pass as many opponents on the start, your race is over, because you cannot catch no one later on. If you are 10th you would be able maybe, maybe pass 2-3 cars and that is that 7th place max and wasted race. Great start and pass multiple opponents on start is needed.

    • @luisorduna2964
      @luisorduna2964 6 років тому +6

It really depends the style. F1 would make sense for this mentallity, but even turn one is conservative. Other forms might be opposite. Lets say its a 24 hour race. You dont need to pass too many cars in the beginning because you have 24 hours to work with. In Oval racing you might have a set up where your car is faster in Long runs vs Short Run cars. But to get to that point, you have to be conservative.
Yes, agressive starts/restarts are good, but being over agressive is bad. You cant win a race if you crash.
Also worth mentioning: feul consumption, tire wear, tire temps, brakes, engine temp, shifting, lines, consistency.
You can be the fastest car by being agressive, but being agressive too early can cost you the race. Better to get a 39th place finish than a DNF. You dont even need a fast car to win. You need skill. Like in soccer: a strong leg cant win a game if you cant kick straight.

Heres a good 12th one; ignoring blue flags. For absolute beginners if you see this flag it means faster car approaching and you need to let that car behind pass as quickly and safely as possible. In a race scenario the leader is coming up to you to lap you and you need to get out of their way or in quali or practice if you're on a warm up or cool down lap and the car behind is faster let them through as they are likely on a flying lap. There is no better way to anger the other drivers than slowing them up or ruining their race because you ignored the blue flag.

I agree with some of these mainly 10 I learned to frive at an actual racing school, so I tend to. Use actual racing geommetry in sim so when I swing out to attack a corner and someone takes it as a passing opportunity and I correct off line to A. Avoid an accident or B. Cause an accident its can throw me off for at least 2 or 3 corners to adjust back to a proper pace and if its in a chicane that could be the deciding factor of placing top 5 or bottom 3.

Real drivers do in fact see the dash and in fact the information contained there in is very important to racing. I find your so called "Forza" perspective to be far better at portraying spatial awareness than what you have set and far more realistic. Default Setups are often way off the mark. When you have previous experience in a type of car, you can predict how to improve it.
The quickest way to learn how setup changes will affect the car is to make BIG adjustments first, then make them smaller as you learn the track.

I sort of agree with the being less aggressive on the first few laps, however, you need to be a BIT aggressive because you don't want those in the front taking advantage of that open road ahead of them. You have to be aggressive but also anticipate what the drivers around you will do coming into a turn and make quick judgements based off of that.
