This made me buy an OP-1. I barely have any musical experience and I have heard it's not the best for beginner but something about this little device really speaks to me.
I relate to this a lot! I would love to know if you're happy with your purchase, as I'm thinking about purchasing one as well and have no musical experience either. (I'm mostly interested in creating ambient stuff on it.) Thank you!
I can only speak for myself, but I have some experience in music (since I have played guitar for 25 years), but just recently got interested in electronic music and bought this synth. There is something inspiring about it I cannot fully explain. It is NOT the one tape or other disantvantages that forces you to be creative. I think it is just plain fun and an extraordinary workflow. I can really recommend it and I am contemplating getting a field in some time.@@rrricardo5906
Something that I’ve found interesting is using the tombola with a slow roll to kind of randomize notes. I try to lighten the gravity a bit also so it’s more subtle
I'm revisiting you're wonderful ambient tutorial but this time, I didn't just watch and learn, I dublicated what demo here... And man so cool, to create such a simple and beautiful ambient loop. Awesome! Thank you again, i
This is a mindbender of a synth. Sometimes it seems too simple and limited. Sometimes I'm shocked by how people use it and so many hidden tricks. It's an incredibly versatile little synth that keeps surprising me, just different from how I usually think or my usual process..so requires some adaptation by the user. At one time I thought I'd sell mine. But through using it and adapting to it...I don't think I ever will.
Agreed. I hate when people say it’s too limited because to me, it’s the opposite. There are so many little tricks and things you can do that it’s almost overwhelming. Amazing instrument.
Hi there, I'm not sure why but I can't download the patch :( would you be able to email it to me by any chance? This tutorial is insane, opened my mind! thanks for sharing
+John Rowley Correct! Boards set the standard for stuff like this haha That's why people always compare other lo-fi textures to them =) They did it first and they did it right
Hey what's going on with the milliseconds in the tape time? It's like 3 01,3 02... 3 25 (about that) then 4 0... Why doesn't it go up to 99 like a normal clock?
Amazing video!! I've been holding to buy an OP 1 for awhile now. Today I was thinking that I could make yoga/relaxation songs with the OP 1 if I buy it. Looked up to see if somebody else was doing that too and I'm so glad I found your video. Cheers
I highly recommend getting one! It has probably pushed my creativity more than any other single piece of gear. Love your channel btw Looking to pick up a Nord later this year!
Thanks for the great video! Unfortunately the download link doesn't seem to work? Zippyshare shows it as a 0.06 Mb file and when played it plays the "op-1 patch" error sound... :-/
Great tutorial - how does it work with looping the pads for you? I always get a click-sound when the loop starts over - I don't think they've solved that issue yet ..
Well, actually I just saw, that the new beta of the OP-1 OS is coming out soon - with the fade between start-/end points in the tape loops - finally :-)
was wondering, would this be a good synth for someone who isn't musical at all (me) but would love to be able to make some music of my own? i really like the idea of being able to play this anywhere. is it easy to get to grips with would you say. thanks.
+racefaceec90 It's definitely one of my favorite instruments. It has a steep learning curve but once you know how to use it it will unlock a lot of creativity. That being said, there are much more affordable options out there if you're just starting out
The new Roland line of boutique synths looks awesome, that wouldn't be a bad place to start. Perhaps learning with some software would be good and then moving on to hardware once you get a sense of how things should work and what you're looking for in a synth. Certain synths do things better than others
+bitspacemusic That could also work but slowing it down gives it a different feel. It slows down the texture of the sound to give it a more interesting vibe
Haha! That's awesome. I've never seen the movie or heard the soundtrack so that was purely coincidental. Just improvised something to teach a technique
if you're still interested 10 months on, op1 synth patches are just files that tell the op1 what settings to use, the vocal thing is just some weird sound TE built into the patch files for when you play them on a computer
The best Tutorial on OP-1 Ambient hands down. I was about to sell it now I am Brian Eno!! Thanks
lmao, this made me laugh
😭too funny

Did you buy it! I am thinking of switching out my KO-II for the OP 1@@rrricardo5906

Was anyone else thinking of "Dreaming of the Crash - Hans Zimmer" from Interstellar the second he played that melody?

agreed. it is such a deep synth, and full of wonderful surprises in exploration. and possibly a future classic due to it's unique character.

All these jam sessions, unrehearsed vids/turts. This was awesome, really instructive. The explaining by voice did alot. Subed!
Glad you enjoyed it! What other types of videos would you like to see?
The pitch bend on this has to be my favorite abt this device 🙏🙏🙏
This is a great help, I've been trying to make ambient sounds on the OP 1 and this video is really informative. Thank you.
+Sebastian Lock Subscribe for more OP-1 videos in the future =)
Make more tutorials please. This is wonderful.
This is great. Is the patch still available somewhere?
Hi there, I'm not sure why but I can't download the patch :( would you be able to email it to me by any chance? This tutorial is insane, opened my mind! thanks for sharing
Thanks so much Mister Spell, really enjoyed this.
this is how boards of canada got the lo fi detuned sound exept they did it in a reel to reel tape recorder
+John Rowley Correct! Boards set the standard for stuff like this haha That's why people always compare other lo-fi textures to them =) They did it first and they did it right
BOC is epic like universe.
Boards of Canada is insane.. geogaddi changed me lmao
This is conceptually the same...the OP-1 mimics a reel-to-reel in operation and function.
nicely done, breaking it down well
Hey what's going on with the milliseconds in the tape time? It's like 3 01,3 02... 3 25 (about that) then 4 0... Why doesn't it go up to 99 like a normal clock?
Interesting observation! I never noticed that
Don’t normal clocks go to 59? Like 9:59:59 is one second before 10:00:00 but I get your point, I’m Almost sure it’s a measure count
Is there any other way to get the patch than from that link? Literally impossible for me to get around the ads.
Nice technique! I've had some luck making ambient stuff using the Tombola sequencer too.
+Dean Sabatino Yes! I've found that can produce the randomness that you sometimes hear in tracks done on modular synths
Amazing video!! I've been holding to buy an OP 1 for awhile now. Today I was thinking that I could make yoga/relaxation songs with the OP 1 if I buy it. Looked up to see if somebody else was doing that too and I'm so glad I found your video. Cheers
'') sounded like the startrek theme for a lil bit '')
Paul McKnight Deep Space 9 :)
Paul McKnight Sounds rather like the Next Generation Theme. I love it!
Which effect are you using since the tale of the sound is very long after you showed the first sound? Thanks!
great demo, i need to find one of those... :)
I highly recommend getting one! It has probably pushed my creativity more than any other single piece of gear. Love your channel btw Looking to pick up a Nord later this year!
Simple but effective. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hey man the link is down could you re upload it plz ?
due to the soap I use, my fingers smell like flowers
Where’s the patch?
Great video, tutorial taught me a lot!!!
Thanks for the great video! Unfortunately the download link doesn't seem to work? Zippyshare shows it as a 0.06 Mb file and when played it plays the "op-1 patch" error sound... :-/
Sounds like an Aphex Twin song from SAW2, too lazy to find the exact track.
Nice ! Thank you Mr. Spell!
What’s the patch?
Awesome tutorial......and \m/ Chvrches \m/
Nice tutorial, thanks! Hey which microphone do you use?
Great tutorial - how does it work with looping the pads for you? I always get a click-sound when the loop starts over - I don't think they've solved that issue yet ..
Unfortunately that's just one of the quirks of the OP-1. Try to incorporate that sound into the track. Could make some cool stuff =)
Well, actually I just saw, that the new beta of the OP-1 OS is coming out soon - with the fade between start-/end points in the tape loops - finally :-)
What is the audio interface name that you use to get the OP1 sound into the computer ?
For this video I plugged the OP-1's output into a Tascam DR-40 portable digital recorder
This reminds me so much "grow til tall" from Jonsí.
Me and my friend made a 12" by doing this with a revox b77
Great that the tape never died ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What do you mean by going to tape? Like you're recording on tape? Or within the machine itself? Software? Logic?
Within the machine itself! OP-1 has a built-in four-track tape recorder
Very informative, thank you!

what would you recommend?

Ive been using ableton for a couple years, I'm going to get massive, & synth pretty soon.
Sounds amazing. Thanks for sharinf
Clipping all the way through
Mistakes were made
Thanks for sharing this!
Nice video, thank you.
+John Lunney Thanks for watching!
Patch file is down. Reup pls :)
Thanks. Great ideas.
Good one!
Nice tricks. 👍🏽
Digital distortion :(
great stuff
Why not play it one octave down, if you've already set a tempo? Instead of slowing the tape down, I mean. So close to pulling the trigger on this..
+bitspacemusic That could also work but slowing it down gives it a different feel. It slows down the texture of the sound to give it a more interesting vibe
awesome
GREAT!
en guarde
Nice. more!
That clipping though...
PawsleyDirt just has to turn the mixer volume down, it’s not hard aha
that was cool
Not dissing, but you basically made track 14 from SAW II, the one after Blue Calx
Haha! That's awesome. I've never seen the movie or heard the soundtrack so that was purely coincidental. Just improvised something to teach a technique
thankyoumisterspell They are actually referring to Aphex Twin's album Selected Ambient Works II
seeing an electronic musician not knowing Aphex Twin is extremely rare
also if you are talking about "Parallel Stripes" yeah the melody is kinda similar
haha I literally just made it up on the spot to show a technique, I honestly did not mean to copy anything
fun video :D
Cool
why does the patch just keep repeating "OP1 Patch" over and over? is thiis the actual sample & your tweaking it?
if you're still interested 10 months on, op1 synth patches are just files that tell the op1 what settings to use, the vocal thing is just some weird sound TE built into the patch files for when you play them on a computer
You are uppercased too? Why dont you write titles to videos in uppercase then?
OBiWan Kanobi...
Too bad the downloadable link is a spyware link - well played
Made this video seven years ago, I don't even know if that website exists anymore. Thanks for the heads up! I'll remove the link
dont quit day job
