I’ve been playing synths since the early 90s and have owned or played almost every major synth. The OP-1 is my favorite of all of them. There is absolutely nothing else like it.
It really is still unique to this day! People are very odd about the workflow, but at its heart it’s just like recording to tape.
Just discovered your vids a few days ago, I really dig them. Super informative, right to the point. Love that you don’t use a lot of graphics and frills and just focus on the instruments actually being used, that’s what I’m always looking for
Thank you so much! I appreciate that & glad you’re enjoying the videos
This is the only OP-1 video I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a lot!) that has really shown to me what a great creative tool it could be…. And actively considering buying one
It really is a super fun instrument - it helps to be willing to get a bit weird with your work flow, but I’m always surprising myself with the thing!
Consider selling you mine used. Less than 30 hrs used on the thing
I think it shines for creativity above all else. The radio sampler is very handy for getting interesting content you wouldn't otherwise think to mutilate.
@Slow Haste I recently decided to get into Synths. I came across the OP-1 Field kinda by accident but decided to splash the cash and have been absorbed for a couple weeks now. I think having limited expectations has been great for me, I wasn't expecting things like "Undo" for example. I'm obsessed! I thought no one would care if I shared what I'm learning (and making) but after seeing your video, I'm planning on sharing my learnings too - cause I'm just in love with this thing and all it can do. I also just LOVE that I don't NEED to be connected to anything to just play around and learn. Thank you for making a video about it, I want to see more 👍
I’m glad you’re enjoying it!! I have an op-1 playlist on the channel that might have some helpful tips :)
@@SlowHaste great! I’ll take a look thank you!!
I’m rewatching this and I didn’t know that album was made on the OP-1! That’s amazing! It’s my fav of yours 😮❤
Yes yes it was!!! Thank you :))
every now and then i use the OP-1 and i create something absoultely magical i never expected i could make and fall in love with it again...
Yes!! The same thing happens to me from time to time
Same here. It's magic
Sold my op1 and don’t regret it……
Bought a sonicware ELZ -1…..briljant little synth….
Liked your vid. A specially to see that you use little happy accidents in your music.
As always keep up the good work….
Lovely greetings from Germany….
Thanks for watching Berto! I've always been interested by those sonicware devices, they look quite appealing. I haven't looked into them thoroughly, but I'll have to!
Nice tip for the lifting the track, did not think of this one. Thank you.
It’s a lifesaver!
Fantastic. The op-1 is like nothing else. Cheers. Lee
It’s indeed its own thing, even after 10+ yrs!
what a great video! do more op1 stuff please!
Thank you!! I definitely will in the future
great video man! Rad tips!
Glad you found it useful!!
this is perfect timing! mine comes in about a couple of days🤠
Nice!! It's so much fun, especially during the learning phase where everything is kind of a surprise. Try to record as much as you can!
@@SlowHaste It came in!!! I love it so far. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to connect to other devices like guitar pedal
@@PocketKnaif awesome!! Glad you’re having fun with it. Yeah for sure, I can add that to my list!
Hi, you're one of my favorite musos on UA-cam. I should check out your album, I always like the sounds you make!
Hey! Thanks a ton Andy, I appreciate that. I’m on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, etc if you wanna check out my stuff!
Great tips!
Thanks for watching!
Great video...I totally agree
Thanks for watching!
None of these are mistakes. But I appreciate #3. Good tip.
That’s fair, I tried to frame it in terms of “things not to do / ignore”; “mistakes” is just a more succinct and catchy title :). Thanks for watching & glad you found it useful!
The most inspiring instrument I own, the OP-Z isn’t too far behind
I sold my OP-Z a few years ago and wish I hadn't, I've since gotten way more comfortable with sequence-based workflows and wish I still had it!
@@SlowHaste just find the OP-Z so much better for drum programming, some of the sequencers on the OP-1 are great but pattern is way too small to work out what you’re playing and doing it via finger can get super confusing once you start building longer patterns, but the OP-Z lacks sound design capability and it doesn’t give you that LoFI OP-1 crunch that we all love. They’re brilliant separately, but wonderful together too. The PO’s are also really quite a lot of fun too
Thank you for your videos! I know you're big into the elektron gear also. I was wondering if you have a preferred piece of gear that you like to use alongside the OP-1 ? Cheers!
Thanks for watching! Tbh, when I use the OP-1 I tend to use it completely by itself (aside from sampling stuff into it). I don’t really use it with any of my other gear!
@@SlowHaste makes total sense! Thank you
11:36 ROYGBIV
I just got mine today and I was having fun till I actually turned on a delay and another odd sound in my drums. And I can’t figure how to turn them off. Any ideas?
♥
♨️
Have you ever used the OP1 as a sequencer for other gear?
No, I haven't used any of its MIDI features unfortunately
Just the poor man’s UNDO makes this video very valuable
Thanks for watching :)
could u explain how to assign parameters at mistake 2?
Yes! When you’re in one of the parameter pages for the master effects/eq, you can hold the 7 or 8 key and then adjust a parameter to assign it to the respective key
@@SlowHaste is it only effects or also anything else?
so I'm having issues with my op1 I'm in the first setting and only certain buttons work but when I hit the one button to shift all my buttons work can someone help me
maybe you have the sequencer on without anything being programmed to it?? i’ve noticed this happen to me too and it’s usually because i accidentally turn the sequencer on when there’s nothing programmed to it and then i turn it off and i can hear what i’m really trying to do. hope this helps!!
So what’s your number one machine now? Did you Digitakt? MPC? Or are you back to the OP1? By the way, constraints can be a great thing for creativity. And fun never hurts either.
I’ve been putting most of my time into getting more familiar with the Octatrack, but the Digitakt/Digitone combo is what I feel the most capable with currently! The goal is to integrate it all together at some point!
And I just put my OP-1 on eBay cause I need a new Mac… kinda making me second guess that decision…
Very cool video dude! Some fantastic ideas in there, I’ll try them out before mine’s gone!
@@hillblocksview yeah probably. But I’ll try a deluge first I think.
Ahhh oh no! I get it though, I definitely go through phases of being inspired by the OP-1, but I'm not always inclined to reach for it first. Even if I'm not "productive" with it, I always seem to entertain myself.
@@SlowHaste I think you’re just a really damn talented musician
But I need a new work machine more than something I barely use. I’ve got my brain full with the OT and Hydrasynth. Plus, I got an album coming out in a week.
@@georgekay372 you're too kind! Also that's awesome, please let me know where I can listen to it!
My stuff always seems to drift on the op-1. I can't tell if it's me or the rig.
Hmm, what seems to drift - is it the metronome? I’ve noticed that sometimes if I start the tape and it’s in between measure markers, it can go a bit off-kilter. But it always self corrects if I stop & restart on beat, and it only affects the internal metronome audio
@@SlowHaste When I try and use tracks 1-4 things just get out of control. It starts out sync but over time it drifts and breaks the tune. Maybe there is an update I can download.
Fun! I'll call my hubby and just play random shit for him. Believe it or not, he loves it.
My name is also Daniel
Hi Daniel!
Now I know your name😈
