Thank you for putting this great content out. What you did in this video made me realize I have a tendency to overthink sound, while beauty certainly can arise from simplicity as you've demonstrated.
Such a pleasure as usual! You explain all the things you are doing "technically", but it's your intuition in creative decision that's the most interesting! Thank you for your great work!
Hi Hainbach, what I like about you videos is that it looks easy, you make incredilbe sounds, and you have a nice explaination about you creative recordings, Treal Artist! Much Blessings!!! Namaste
Tape and half speed is one of the most magical things I've learned from you. It's amazing how acoustic even the most machine-like tone becomes. I also really like the idea of sampling a synth-voice from tape recording of a synth tone. It's the most obscure synthesis, I feel it goes beyond sampling.
Hainbach, I Love Every Video I've Seen So Far! A few request ideas would be To continue to take Your Tape techniques/production informatives into unassuming spaces to aquire Unique Sounds/depths.. A few Examples perhaps..Set Up some sort of mobile Rig, maybe different for each special scenario. Pick like an old boat or a submarine, an empty water tower, or a factory..running or closed. Perhaps a cafe..Maybe a tennis court, or an open mic night. I love Your happenstances acquired, When You caught Your daughter's Voice or nature sounds or clicks and chirps from machines! When I record at home I get some rogue traffic sounds or dog barks through my walls.. Maybe deliberately set up with permission in a church service, a wedding.. A Grand Cathedral...Record harmonies from The choir, the procession, people kneeling to all stand, book rustling pages for hymns or close to the organ..Picking a Latin or German sermon could be quiet Haunting and unique. You have such a keen ear these would be Lovely audio and visual additions as backdrops or roots to whole new works.. Hainbach, You are Visionary, You Inspire Me!
This was great!! I hadn't thought about using a micro-cassette recorder for the lofi sound. I'll have to start scouring the thrift stores for one. Thanks!
you should do a comparison video of how different samples sound when recorded by line out compared to using a mic, would be interesting. very interesting video btw love your content
Favorite as in what I could afford? Alesis Quadraverb for spaced out rooms, Neunaber Slate for natural reverb, all the Valhalla plugins. Copicat MK IV, Dynacord VRS23. Can't afford but love Ursa Major Space Station (the old one), EMT 140, Roland Space Echo. Olympus LS14
HAINBACH yes Love the quadraverb, still sounds great and the EMT. I’ve not really used plugins, will check mentioned. I’ve been looking at some chase bliss pedals, sound v good
Great Process. I always look forward to your videos!! I love working with tape, but i cant quite afford a Nagra so i do this same process using a Marantz PMD222 and an OP-1! I love the OP-1 Sampler!
Hey do either of you have a take on the PMD222's XLR input and noise? I've read there are noise floor issues with that input, but that's also said by people using it for uhhh "traditional" applications. I'm wondering if the noise may in fact, be lovely. Any thoughts? I wouldn't want to do a mod to fix it, rather just get a 221 with an input converter, if absolutely needed.
Btw, I have a podcast that I would love to have you on sometime if you are up for it - I think you would have a lot of great insights... you can check it out here: musicsoundsandsilence.com .... let me know if you are up for it :D
Wonderful sounds here! I recently picked up a morphagene and have been really enjoying it so far (as a substitute for getting an actual tape recorder for now). I was wondering what you generally do with your morphagene, if there's anything specific you use it for? I would really like to hear your thoughts on the morphagene and what you think it does best/how it fits in your setup.
Mine is supernew! Make Noise send it to me to make a reel for their freesound project. I am still exploring it, but I do love it as tape Ersatz. Look into my Instagram hainbach101, using it for my collaboration with Amulets a lot.
I would love to hear you talk about ways to process Piano material. digital sampling, tape recording, use of effects. anything would be really really really nice !! (The 29th of March is the official Piano Day *hint* *hint*) Love your channel!
Have you ever used a genuine spring reverb before? They can be easily found inside those old organs from the 70's that are always being given away for free where I live. Other interesting parts inside may be usable too, such as a Leslie speaker if it had one for a physically moving speaker type tremolo. The reverb would be the easiest though, and can easily be located due to the metal can look to it, the springs, or the reverberation when you shake the thing. :3 Just an idea!
Hi all ! I recently bought my op-1… i do notice that the overall output volume is quite low … is that normal ? Also th radio function gives a lot of static and nearly no radio stations… the extra antenna does not make that much difference. Is this normal ? Any experiences or comments ? Thanks, Philippe
Great video!! Would it be possible to record directly inside OP1 and slow the recording at half speed without using an external tape recorder? And then process further the sound inside OP1 as you did? Thanks
I am curious about your OP-1. It looks like it is missing a key. Once I noticed that I began to question the tape around the edges. What adventures has this OP-1 been on?
Sigur Ros - remember when the first album came out. Went to their first show in Hamburg, small place. Got in early cause there were people I wanted to chat to. There was a shyly smiling lanky dude putting up incense all over the place, making my head ache. Space was not accomodating to this much smoke, and my mother always told me how she fainted in church from all the incense. I extinguished the burners around me once he was gone. An hour later, I saw him on stage playing his guitar with a bow and doing his elven whale song. It was Jón.
First time I have seen the Alesis Wedge reverb, it makes some nice reverb for the low price on "Reverb web site". Do you keep the Fostex recording all the time for later use?
I have listened to your techniques and wondering if I can use some of them with my relatively simple set up. It is perhaps reawakening what I was doing (or attempting) years ago with tape recorders and at one time a Casio SK-1 (how primitive can you get?). I don't have an OP-1 and can't afford one, but I may find an old sampler some day.
So if space/ convenience was not an issue, what sampler would you recommend? You articulate your music-mind in a way i've always attempted to, so I feel like I could trust a recommendation from you.
I like to keep sampling quick and simple, so the OP1 is pretty neat. Morphagene in the modular is amazing for its sound quality. In my dreams I'd like to try an Akai MPC 60 or EMU SP 1200.
Nice video. Reeally want to do a bit more with sampling, but can't afford the op1 and the digitakt is only monophonic. Is there another small sampler where you can easily grab recording and pitch them over a keyboard with wave editing? Maybe there isn't, and that's why the op1 is so great!
Superb as always! But just a quick question - didn't quite catch why you sampled via the Op1 instead of directly using the Morphogene; say, the Fostex or, better still, the Nagra directly into the module. Although I really did love the end product, still, I found it strange that you recorded the piece from tape to the digital sampler of the Op1 instead of feeding it directly into you modular rig. I may have missed something of your explanation, but must say I did find the approach curious (though an incredible use for the Op1's sampler! Really amazing!).
Because the OP1 is poly phonic. This way I could write an harmonic part on it, record that part on the Morphagene, pitch and reverse it, and play the OP1 on top. Hope that makes it clearer.
Do you trim your samples in the OP-1? It's really annoying that it doesn't have a zero-crossing lock function. I always get really heavy clicks when trimming dense samples. Any ideas on a workaround?
I have a bunch of OP1 and normal packs on my patreon, this one is closest to this: www.patreon.com/posts/op1-soundpack-1-19455597 Posting new ones every month.
@@Hainbach so theres no way to sample a particular side of a 2-tracked audio? For example, maybe the right side has less percussion in the mix than the left….I know you can do that on MPC’s (sample stereo or mono L or R)
Groovy. But I feel that I’ve heard this exact sound from one of the onboard sound engines on the OP-1. I own one and it sounds like a toy compared to analog things. I want to get a small tape recorder with speed variation, etc. Any recommendations?
That’s all the beautiful dirt you want 😍. Very inspiring workflow. I feel like the OP-1 microphone is still underrated.
This has become my favourite channel on UA-cam.

really nice as always. Noise, texture, note choices. Great work.
Thank you! I am working on a good workflow, so I can do these videos faster. Looking forward to chat a bit about that.
Love this video! pronunciating “reckerd” is usually saved for albums, while “rechord” is for everything else.
That sample is so serene. Taking older tech and reusing them for modern purposes is definitely something I love.
That's love right there, in that little tape patch on the OP1. You sir, are extraordinary 🙏
That sample is delightful. Very Hainbachian. The first play out of the OP-1 made me smile - out loud.
One simple sample, and you make it so soulful... Very impressive, thank you Herr Hainbach. Swedish technologi offcourse...
Hi Hainbach, what I like about you videos is that it looks easy, you make incredilbe sounds, and you have a nice explaination about you creative recordings, Treal Artist! Much Blessings!!! Namaste
Morphagene and OP-1 are fantastic friends - wonderful to see how you're using them here.
really inspiring stuff. I didn't expect you to record with the op1 mic from the nagra! super lofi
Yeah, but also real reel mechanical noises and when pitched down no bloaty bass frequencies.
What a gem to find. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and techniques!
Everything about this video was so beautiful. Thank you
Thank you! Your videos keep getting better and better. My vote for the best on UA-cam!
Thx Zeb! I am trying to get a process for me going so I can make these more easily and naturally, with less edits. Glad it translates!
Brilliant video, just my sort of drone music, could listen to this forever. Keep up the great video's.
I can not be more in agreement with your last statement, fabulous, I appreciate knowing your work and person! And, of course, nice sounding mix
respect, such beauty and rich story in the sound...
Very interesting. I particularly enjoyed your explanation of the creation of space. The tune/soundscape was also good.
Absolutely! Pushing air through speakers, catching it with mics and recording it with magnetism just adds a beautiful layer to a sound.
What a lovely video
Really good thanks for explaining the simplicity , and basics, of sampling....
Fantastic video. I loved this one.
Awesome! so nice with just a single note, I love it. Thx

This is magical.
Great insight, most I like your idea of sound and story.
Cool techniques! I have an sk-1 and I totally see what you mean. Thanks :)

It's all in my head - not the best way but I simply have no time to document.
Sounds great

Very insightful 👍
boii i'm bout to sample this VIDEO
Bro I sample EVERYTHING
This is beautiful and intense yet in the most delicate and honest way
very nice and useful. All is recorded to the tape mixer ? Any advice on with one to get nowdays ? Thanks
The Fostex was only the mixer, I did not record to it. I have no real advice, just to not overspent. They are fun, but also break easily now.
Sehr schön

Amazing :D I saw them at a festival early on...lying in the middle of the crowd closing my eyes throughout the whole thing. It was almost too good.
Thank you for your videos and love your music. Is there a reason that you are using the op-1 over another hardware sampler?
Because it's small and I travel a lot.

I really don't know one new sampler that is as much fun. But I have stopped looking after getting the OP1.
Take a look at the Korg Microsampler. Every bit as fun, or more, than the OP-1. No wave forms to look at - you'll have to use your ears.
