FUJIFILM X-T3 FOR VIDEO: CAMERA SET-UP TUTORIAL

  • In this episode, the longest gearbox to date, I go through how to set up the Fuji X-T3 for video. I hope you like it and please subscribe & click the bell for notifications for when new episodes drop. IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THIS VIDEO...
    1. Jump to about 6:48 if you want to get into the in-depth primer on the camera.
    2. Starting at about 14:36 I mention that the Dynamic Range was set to 100% instead of 400% when I was shooting F-Log but have now found out that dynamic range options are disabled when shooting log on the camera. That makes sense as Log is supposed to yield the most dynamic range out of the sensor as possible. DR is only available when using the film simulations.
    3. The X mount versions of the cine zooms are MKX not MK. The MK versions are the e-mount ones.

    Another amazing camera review, from a cinematographer, for cinematographers; proving once again how little youtubers know about cameras, video and cinematography.
    Thank you all of videos, they explore everything you really need to know. I have literally rented a camera, watched your video & delivered professional results. There is nothing worse than being on set and trying to figure out a menu setting, or the best mode for the situation.
    The XT3 really is the best hybrid camera; I mean you could improve video and photography by carrying around both a Pocket 4k & a Nikon D850, with lenses .... or just the XT3.

      sold off my canon gear six months ago, waited and waited, finally it dawned on me the X-T3 is probably not going to be bested (for corporate reasons) at sony at this price point. that whole price thing, but the real kicker is that the Panasonic S1 is too heavy to carry with me everywhere... even if the A7Siii is lighter and more attractive for some reason, i think their lens lineup is overrated, dated and similarly bulky. looking forward to not checking an fs7 and a giant DSLR anymore!! this thing feels like no camera at all, with the zoom i am gtg and walking on 10-bit air... hopefully i earn enough with the X-T3 to procure myself one of the recently rumoured, hopefully forthcoming leica 100th anniversary ASC edition "location scouting" cameras - now that is a camera worth spending thousands of dollars on!!
      digressions aside, the professionals are going to wake up eventually. the workflow is faster than any camera (canon, pentax, sony, canon...) system i have ever owned. the Fuji X-T3 with the 23mm f2 WR and an extra battery is a fantastic combination - even with the zoom it is 1/2 the weight and 1/2 the size of any sony or canon with a prime. IMHO the 1.2 glass from fuji is not a good option for video, and the f2 is great for street or documentary photography. the battery life on the X-T3 is substantially better than youtube reviews let it on to be - getting approximately 75% of my canon. if i was on a hot-set shooting video, i would want the battery grip - but only for the AC adapter connection - and only if the 28600 MaH Anker battery pack (officially recommended by Fuji) doesn't work out for some reason. as i think it is only available on amazon, i would gladly return it. with that Anker setup, presumably i can shoot for nearly 6 hours!?! on my busiest days with the fs7 shooting interviews all day, i have never shot for 6 hours.
      clearly i am a happy camper.

      I’m a photographer who is slowly getting into video. I’d love to see if the ninja really helps. I understand 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 but haven’t actually seen how much further you can push the grade with that extra colour information.

    • @theC47
      @theC47  5 років тому +1

      @Isaac Insoll It's a bit of a rabbit hole I'm afraid as there are so many variables that contribute to the final image. Each company has its secret sauce and that can have a dramatic imoact on how far you can push and pull the image in post. For instance, the Canon C300 is only 8 bit but has some magic fairy unicorn dust in there that allows for pushing the image more than you would expect. That said, I would say that bit depth might be a tad more important than chroma sampling. Bit depth defines the total number of colors/colours. Generally there are less banding issues with 10 versus 8 bit. We are very good at filling in blanks which is why chroma sampling can be 4:2:0 and we can still "see" everything. Big subject that will become bigger once our monitors actually start to show us more of what these cameras are actually capturing.

    I can set the tracking in photo mode, but not in video mode, so I don’t know what is that tracking sensitivity for. I presume it’s just for face/eye detection mode, but what if I want to track something else or a person from behind.
    I’m thinking about adding a XT4 to my Xt3, because of IBIS. The fact I can’t stabilise a prime or vintage is killing me. I have to carry either a tripod or a glidecam with me all the time. The other option would be to buy the Tamron 17-70 f2.8 VC, but then again I can’t use primes.
    For now the only stabilised lens I use is the 18-55 and mine isn’t as sharp as it should be.

    • @gmolina
      @gmolina 5 років тому +3

      I haven't tested this on the Fuji X-T3, but from a technical/theoretical point of view, 400% DR should be used where you need more dynamic range, like in broad daylight where you want to preserve details from both the highlights and the shadows. Using this with F-log would be ideal.
      By decreasing dynamic range to 100%, you may find less noise in the shadows when shooting low light since you're keeping most of the bit-rate within a narrower range, therefore the performance of your mid tones details should be better as well. What you will find is crushed blacks and blown out highlights if you do this in a scene that requires a higher DR, which is usually not the case in low light.

    Video newbie here. i setup my camera using the settings you outlined and LightRoom wouldn't import the MOV files. Then after using Finder to copy the files to HD the playback using Davinci Resolve 15 is jerky. Is it because of the H.265 setting? or the 200mbps? Can I convert these to something usable?
    Thanks

    • @theC47
      @theC47  5 років тому +2

      It's the codec. Lightroom might not support the H.265 format. I find that H.265 Long GOP @ 200mbps is the most efficient version overall. Lots of dropped frames playback for ALL-I. If that's not working then you have to go to MP4 recording. I get good playback in FCPX with the above in UHD though.

      ShootsDenBrah it’s actually 24p and 23.98 or more accurately 23.976.
      24p is generally the frame rate used to “film” movies. 23.98 is widely used to the same effect but mathematically allows for the conversion to 29.97 which has been the standard frame rate in NTSC countries to distribute television programming.
      It’s a rabbit hole. If I think about it too much myself I still get confused sometimes.

    • @RallenMan
      @RallenMan 5 років тому

      Ariel Estulin That is a big question probably best answered by your own research. But a short answer is that frame rate is based on an old USA TV color frame rate and is pretty much the standard used for all video production in the USA. I’m a pro sound mixer doing ads and shorts for web and TV for the last 8 years and I have never been asked even once to use a frame rate other than 23.98 FPS. Recently I have heard that because there is virtually no reason to keep using 23.98 since so much content is streamed or shown on digital projectors or HDTV screens that the effects houses for major films are asking for true 24 FPS and this has been done on Marvel films. This is because the effects guys want an integer number of frames per second to manipulate rather than a fractional number. Expect to see 24 FPS replace 23.98 over the next few years.
