This is hands down the best instructional video available for the XT3. No fluf or over produced ego tripping, just packed full of good clear precise information. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. Excellent work and I agree with the other comments, Fuji should employ you to make there instructional videos :)
Photojournalism as it should be! Superb Professional illustration and instruction, without doubt, THE best on UA-cam, by far! Many thanks, Maarten! Please consider publishing E books which we can purchase and always have with us for reference.
Always a pleasure to see your avatar in the comments, and as always I appreciate the kind words. Let me think about that as a concept - and thanks for the suggestion. There is an e-book version of the X-T2 settings that I published with FujiLove magazine.
The online manuals are always easy to find just Google "(name of camera) manual pdf". The manual for the X-T2 is on this page: fujifilm-dsc.com/en/manual/x-t2/
Just bought this camera about a month ago... Needles to say I have been completely blown away by the amount of functions that fuji has put into this body. Now i need to get a lens that will do it justice
I have to say this is one of the most information packed video I have ever seen regarding "how to". Other youtube channels always just chop them up in tiny pieces and most of them have 0 idea how to work at professional level.
The best detailed reviewer in the planet UA-cam!! Appreciate your every videos. Its most informative and relevant on subject than anything fancy. Thank You sir for all your effort and educational content.
Never judge a book by its cover!!! Mr. Heilbron, let me begin by saying that I did judge the first few seconds of your video (mainly the lighting) so much that I almost didn’t continue watching, and that would have been VERY UNFORTUNATE, because this is by far one of the MOST EDUCATIONAL and KNOWLEDGEABLE videos I’ve ever watched, not just about the X-T3 but also about video and first steps into a more advanced path with color grading and such. Please forgive me for misjudging your video and accept my gratitude. A few highlights: - i watched dozens of videos about the X-T3 and they all say “you can’t lock your exposure settings in video mode in case you have to switch to stills for a couple of shots” You showed otherwise! Very important feature specially for someone like myself that have to do that in the middle of shooting. Your explanation of focus peaking and zebra was priceless. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I was sad at the end of your video for 2 reasons: 1- i wish it never ended. And 2 - there are more people like myself out there and you only have 35k Views and 78k subscribers meanwhile a bunch of “know NOTHING” out there are breaking the 1 mil subscribers. I am just a huge fan of yours now and just too passionate about your video!!! Thank you
Thanks for letting me know. The video was recorded at the UA-cam Tokyo studio, and we had tough time getting both the Tokyo tower and me properly exposed. And thank you very much for your kind words, they are appreciated.
OOOMMMGGGGG!!!!! i rarely comment on videos like this..... but OMG was this video helpful... all these details nobody else talks about, all those little codecs and external options no one mentioned...!!! I'll have to watch it again to configure properly my cam and atamos...... thanks!!!!
As a new fuji-xt3 owner comng from sony, o really learned alot in this video and still have to learn, Maarten i sincerely thank you for this video that no other youtuber has made.
We bought a X-T3 at work, after comparing it with the a7iii (thanks to your different videos about it, too), and I must say that I absolutely do not regret this purchase! I still haven't tested all the capabilities it has, video-wise, but I'm really pleased with it. Thank you for this helpful video, I will share it with my colleagues. :)
This is honestly the most concise video of this nature that I have seen, and as questions pop up in my mind you dismiss them in the next moment. I don't have the camera yet but am considering switching, and I'm watching every video I can to make sure I don't make a mistake as I really do love my Nikon d750. Your clip has been incredibly insightful on all the most valuable video aspects - specifically the ease of use for focus assistance and the 48 shutter settings. These are things very few other people cover, they are all just stuck on the film simulations...which are great...but I needed more than that. Honestly remarkable. Humblest Thanks.
This is a bit of an older clip, but the detail of information and how it was delivered, not only makes it relevant but also makes it a real pro, easy to understand and easy to follow. I wish I've could found this channel before I bought my crappy canon. But anyway, agreed on hands down to Mr. Heilbron. I immediately subscribed and added my like (I had to).
A vision of clarity, thank you for this! I'm a complete video novice and was able to follow along and get my XT3 all set up and ready to go. Great content.
A million thanks! This video is so clear and packed with information I've had to watch it a few times, and took notes. I've always been a stills photographer, but have just been hired by a charity in Vietnam to do both stills and video. I am utterly lost, but I think you may have just saved me!
This was really helpful, thanks. A really good, no gimmicks insightful video with lots of practical tips. I'll be watching more of your content for sure. Cheers
Thanks for the tips! I'm subscribing. Watched 13 minutes of this one and had to stop for the night, but got a lot out of it, even for my X-T30. Thank you.
This was not the ideal setting. We wanted the Tokyo tower in the background, and got locked to that idea even when we couldn't really light it properly. Otherwise, thanks for the kind words.
Fuji I LOVE your flip SCREEN concept! They have in my opinion the best flip screen arrangement on the marked. Makes high/low photo a breeze compared to the Panny/Oly/Canon idea where you have to flip it all the way out before rotating etc which makes you miss the moment. 100% cudos to Fuji here. This vlogging-thingy is just for a few users compared to the large amount of photographers out there.
Extremely succinct and valuable, as always Maarten. Thanks for your work on this. Would love to see a quick video on how you hide your mic in your glasses sometime.
Thanks for the kind words - I always try to be succinct. It's really very simple, I just tape the mic using electrical tape. The mic is just inside the arm, then taped again at the end and then you can usually see the cable going behind my ear.
Great show, Maarten. You hit on all the salient points when it comes to shooting video with the XT-3 and video in general, some of which I had to learn the hard way (such as how to get to exposure settings that fall between the manual dial settings, for example). This video is a true crash course and will accomplish exactly what you intended it to do - get someone who is unfamiliar with the camera up and running quickly.
thanks so much for this video. I'm new to fujifilm, mirrorless, and cameras with this type of technology. i had my settings so messed up and didn't have a clue how to fix them!
Thank you Maarten for a superb illustration of the XT3 video settings. I'm new to video and your extensive and comprehensive tutorial is the best. Many thanks
Maarten Hi! As always your video helped me a lot to get to know more - understanding a great camera like fujifilm Xt3. Still watching other videos as I try to master this camera before I go out for a major shooting activity. Again thanks, may you have a happy and blessed new year.
Maarten - Another example of an excellent review, well worth watching and very informative - I also wish that I was on that beach featured in the video (if you ever need anyone to carry your cases next time, I'm your man)! Thanks very much to both of you for the Postcard from Tokyo - very kind and thoughtful. Look after yourself both and keep the great reviews coming - until the next time. Regards Mark
It’s an extensive tutorial with full information. Thanks 🙏🏽 can I use the same settings for my XT4 camera? How to record video with 70-300 Fuji lens? Any special settings required?
thank you for this.. it greatly helped me. there were a few parts where there were no video, just the blank youtube wallpaper. it would be good if you updated it with the footage.
Thank you for this video Maarten. You truly are a gentleman, scholar and blessing when it comes to your tutorials. Wishing you the very best in 2020 and beyond my friend! 👍 & Sub'd
Quite frankly this is the best video pertaining to the Fuji X-T3 on UA-cam. Wishing now that I had a similar video for the Sony PXW-FS7 the first time I rented one. Thank you so much for this - it released a tremendous amount of stress - I am buying the camera tomorrow for documentary filmmaking and the occasional sojourn into stills photography. If this has already been addressed elsewhere online i am not sure, but with respect to overheating issues (if you don't mind), I have a two-part question: i) When recording with an Atomos externally, is there a substantial reduction in the risk of overheating? ii) Does anyone have any controlled data on overheating times on the Fuji X-T3 while using an external recorder at various settings, so as to be safe?
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks. I would not be overly worried about overheating for the X-T3, unless you are recording in a hot environment (and in that case, any camera will be challenged). There is a reduction in the risk, but again, with high external temperatures this risk is not eliminated. I have not seen these kinds of controlled tests, and as each situation is different, they can't really be applied to real world. I can't find any reports of videographers complaining about overheating. If I were you I'd put these issues to rest.

Thanks for this useful tutorial. For outdoor conditions, let's say in a bright sunny day, we can't set shutter speed to 1/60 will it be a problem for video frames? I mean is there a calculation constraint in video frame rate and shutter speed, a bit confused will appreciate if you could answer thanks!
In sunny conditions you'll need an ND filter to reduce the light enough so that you can maintain the shutter at 1/60. 3-5 stops should do it.
4 роки тому
Maarten Heilbron actually what I mean lets say I do not have ND filter but set 1/4000 shutter speed so can it cause problem at video smoothness at 60 frames video?
I'm sorry if I garbled that. There is AutoISO in movie mode, but unlike stills, there are no settings (lower limit, etc) to adjust. And, of course, Manual ISO is also an option.
Hello, congratulations for your videos I love them. I have a question, how long have you been recording when the warming logo appeared? Does it heat up as much as the sonys when recording? Thank you.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I wasn't making notes, and don't now remember if it was time or temperature that I felt was the cause - however, the camera did not overheat to the point of shutting down. No, Sony's problem (particularly on the APS-C sized cameras) is worse, where I have had multiple occasions when the camera turned itself off, even after the Auto Pwr OFF temp setting was added.
Hi Maarten, I'm an X-T3 newbie. Shot a short video yesterday in 4K and was surprised to see that the camera chopped it up into 1:19min segments. Which setting is responsible for this, or do I have to live with this? They did fit together seamlessly, but I'd hate to have to go through Premiere every time to patch them together, especially for longer projects. Thanks!
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I installed it right after getting my new camera. In the meantime, I heard that you have to use a 64GB or bigger SD card to keep the camera from "packaging" the files. The card I had was 64GB even, I will make a test with a bigger one tomorrow and hope for the best ... Thanks again! J.
Right. I just went back through the press releases and note that in the release of 2.0 they indicated that the continuous file feature was not included and that they would provide an updated timetable in 2019. It's not the worst thing, but I agree, it's kind of awkward and certainly not necessary with the SD-XC card type. Is it worth noting that Sony detects the card type automatically, and records in chunks when necessary and in full files when not?
Maarten Heilbron interesting. Not a huge argument against Fujifilm, but I hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere. Anyway, they've come through with impressive improvements in the past, so I'm looking forward to that firmware upgrade. Thank you very much for your help!
Very happy to find so amazing and clear content about the Fujifilm X-T3. I have a question about. When I record in H265 I can not import the files to Premiere 2019 and I have to convert the codec to H 264. How can I solve this problem? Thanks in advance
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. You'll find more tips in my X-T3 review. ua-cam.com/video/WXX8acwyQPM/v-deo.html And I am working on an X-T3 travel tips video.
Helpful video - thanks. I'm thinking of getting this camera. You mentioned a better cinematic lens for shooting video with this cam rather than the stock lens. What would you suggest for stock studio shots please? Thanks
I appreciate the kind words. Fujifilm makes a couple of excellent cinema lenses - ua-cam.com/video/URaTdC-1MSA/v-deo.html If those are beyond your budget, I shoot most of my content with the 16-55 F2.8. It's not par focal as such, but not bad.
Hi Maarten, now I saw this instructional video again and again and everytime I learned a bit more. Thank You !!! Every time when I see a notice in my e-Mail, that You produced a new video, the day becomes a sunny day. You mentioned the better quality of the MKX lenses. Could You please comment the quality of the XF 16-55/2,8 in comparison to the MKX 16-55/2,9 ? During travelling abroad 70% of my pictures are stills and 30% videos. In video mode I don't usually use zooming while recording.
Thank you, always nice to hear from a viewer who enjoys my channel, appreciated. Unless you're doing 100% video work for demanding clients, the MKX lens is overkill. The 16-55 is a great all around lens, and it's what I use.
Maarten, this is a very helpful and clear guide, thank you. I have one question; when using the HDMI out to monitor on a separate screen, audio monitoring via the headphones jack is disabled and seems to br re-routed through the HDMI to the monitor. This is less than ideal and different to what I've experienced on other cameras - do you know if there's a way to continue to monitor audio via the headphone jack whilst using an external monitor? Appreciate you taking the time to make these guides, very helpful. Cheers!
Thank you, your kind words are gratefully appreciated. That seems to be normal behaviour to me, and although I sympathize with what appears to be non-standard behaviour to you, the solution - plugging the headphones into the monitor (which I do) seems a suitable solution.
Thank you for the fast reply! I think it's likely me getting used to moving into video from photography where my roots were, and getting used to the small things that can trip you up between systems. On this particular shoot I brought my X-T3 to run alongside the crew's Sony FS5 and A7sII cameras, and spent some time trying to figure out why we couldn't monitor a hot-shoe mounted shotgun mic before realising the HDMI port took the audio to the TV monitor. Definitely good to know and yes, monitoring audio from via the monitor (a TV in this case) would have been the way to go. THanks again!
Killer stuff sir! Just got my new XT3 and 10 bit internal f-log results are insane. Can you pls go a little more on the when-to and when-not-to go for f-log and the dynamic range redistribution.
It's simple - don't use F-log unless the dynamic range is more than 8 stops. If it is, first try to fix that, and if it absolutely can't be fixed, use F-Log. Either way, you will have to reduce the dynamic range in editing to about 8 stops, as nearly all displays (for now anyway) support an 8 (or so) bit range. The (partial) solution is to use HLG, so that the displays that do support it can take advantage of the higher dynamic range.
@@MaartenHeilbron display shouldn't be a problem, coz I've an Eizo 10 bit grading monitor...what I'm looking for is good dynamic range in images and the log results (after grading) almost always beats the eterna results. Also, the 10-12 bit footages definitely do look better even on 8 bit screens. So I just don't see why I shouldn't be shooting log all the time.
@@MaartenHeilbron What you are saying is ideally correct, but practically I don't see this as a limitation. Last video I edited was 16 bit and it looks phenomenal even on small screens. Same for a GH5 10 bit vs 8 bit video.
@@rajneessingh222 Thanks, but I frankly no longer have any idea what you meant from your original comment - you seem mohave quite enough experience to answer the question.
Very helpful for we beginners. Questions: When I switch to Movie Mode why do I need to change from AF-S to AF-C ... it seems to do that automatically? Can you pls consider doing a video on the Sports Finder Mode ... that's not well explained anywhere. Your showing examples is better than trying to read about it.
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. Yes, it does, but it's helpful to set the switch to remember that's where you are. I do demo sports finder mode in my review, which you might find interesting. ua-cam.com/video/WXX8acwyQPM/v-deo.html
@@MaartenHeilbron Brilliant rundown on the X-T3 you pointed me to Maarten. So much helpful info. Example: how to use the Wide Focus re 'set focus point to where item enters the screen'. It is hard to find that sort of knowledge. Would be wonderful to see you do more like that? Another Question: Lots of Shutter choices ... what to use? When? How to minimize changes? Thanks.
Thanks again for the kind words. I do my best to be honest and detailed. For shutter, use the mechanical shutter unless you have a specific need. I'll think about that as a topic, as more cameras are adding this kind of control, but the reasons to use alternate shutter modes silence the shutter, speed the shutter) are few and finding situations to demonstrate the impact and effects are hard to find.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thx for direction on shutter. Will go MS only right now. Confusing because I want camera to choose best for situation ... but it actually doesn't. Seems the Sports Finder will only actuate if on MS? The shutter choices and operational consequences are not clear; setting to all 3 with idea of "let camera make best choice" negates at least that function ... not intuitive. Thx Maarten ... you're a big help to ordinary folks like me.
Always happy to help. Right, limitations. SportsFinder only works with mechanical, Pre-shot only with electronic ... I found that frustrating (and neither as useful/usable as I'd have liked). Right now my method is to change to one of the others only when necessary.
Great in-depth videos. Honestly I would say these are my favourite on UA-cam! Quick question. In 'Movie Silent Control' mode, can the list of options (ISO, shutter speed, etc.) be navigated with the arrow buttons/AF joystick? Or are you restricted to using the touchscreen to swipe through these options?
Thanks for the kind words. That is an excellent point I should have made or demonstrated - yes, you can use the joystick to navigate, but you must use touch to access the menu. While the mode (in and out of silent) can be set to a function key, activating the menu cannot (as far as I can tell anyway).
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for that. Well as long as I can use the joystick to navigate the options that sounds good to me, since I always prefer to use manual controls rather than touchscreen gestures. Looking forward to getting my X-T3 in a few weeks time as a replacement for my Canon 80D!
Thanks Maarten, I enjoyed the fast pace that your video provided. I'm am experienced stills shooter wanting to do more video so I was able to keep up with your settings instantly. It's interesting that many reviewers of the X-T3 rave about the video capabilities (quite rightly) but give us the impression that we should be shooting this camera at warp speed, but in the real world these are not necessarily the best settings for many of us, even the pros. I have spent hours researching gimbals for the X-T3 Fuji cameras and am keen on the Moza Air 2 but the weight of this gimbal negates the reasons why I switched to mirrorless? For the moment I am not going to use an external recorder so require the X-T3 screen free of motor mechanisms. I would appreciate your input on this? Yes of course I subscribed. :)
Thanks for the kind words, and your subscription, appreciated. I agree, if you're producing for youtube or other online distribution, the X-T3's high end settings are more than what's needed (and fill up memory cards super fast!) I'm not sure what your question might be ... what is "screen free of motor mechanisms"? The Moza Air (or the Ronin-S, which I would recommend) are indeed heavier devices, but they provide functionality that no stills/video hybrid can match. If that's what you need, it's much, much lighter than the steadicam rigs that they replace.
Why do you need this setting? What are you trying to do? You can simply select the frame rate you want from the movie settings menu. As for outputting to a TV set, PAL and NTSC are not issues for HDMI.
ok, because i was using other brand before which is have those setting, i tough will be available for fuji as well, but thanks for your help Mr.Heilbron...🙏🏻
thank you so very much for making this very informative video. I am just getting into making videos and this is so helpful. I also find your reviews to be the best as they are very fair and your not a fan boy!
This is phenomenal, thank you. Although, with my XT30 through a external device (Blackmagic Mini) direct into OBS, there seems to be no way around a '4k Recording' symbol during recording. How on earth would I ensure a clean output??
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for getting back to me... fixed. Quite simply, I was recording through OBS *whilst* recording simultaneously through cam. Quite the double fail there, but it' solved a separate issue for me also. Keep up the great content!
Hi I just stumbled onto your channel and glad i did. Going to using the X-T3 with the Ninja V external recorder. Shooting in both F-LOG and HLG. What setting on the X-T3 can I ignore since I am going out the HDMI port and also can you comment on F-LOG vs HLG and also how would you expose for both of them. I am coming from mom the Sony world with S-LOG2. Any other pointers yo have on how yo have your Nina V setup would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Thanks for your kind words, nice to hear from you. Before I say anything else - all of these are creative settings to help you tell your story and to capture and convey the emotion of a sense, so if it's works for you, then it is the right thing. And any advice that anyone gives should be tested and evaluated before you use those settings for any shoot. Do download the Fujifilm log LUTs and install them on the Ninja. This will help you get the exposure right, and I found with the X-T3 that you can expose up to 100%, although I'd probably back off slightly. HLG is a specific gamma designed for displays that support it (there are not many). If the display is not HLG capable, the file resorts to a standard REC709 curve - which is likely what you're seeing. The settings that are not valid in F-log are dimmed out when F-og is selected. Although the Fujifilm bit depth and colour subsampling provides enough leeway to fully recover from the use of a log profile (Sony does not), I would still recommend the use of log only when the high dynamic range of the scene requires it. Otherwise you are needlessly compressing the already usable dynamic range of the scene during recording and then re-storing it in post, an unnecessary intervention. To the extent it's possible (and I nearly always make adjustments in post) I create my look in camera. Any film sim can be graded. Personally my preference is classic chrome, and I reduce the highlight, colour and detail. A half step to log is the Eterna film sim with the DR set at 400% (you'll need an ISO of 640 or higher). Hope this helps.
Maarten Heilbron This helps tremendously thank you. I live in the mountains with lots of snow so the scene is usually high contrast hence the reason for asking about FLOG and HLG. So basically if shooting in HLG and the content will most likely not be viewed on a HDR display there is no advantage to using HLG then? I think you misunderstood my question in regards to using the NinjaV, If i am going to shoot in FLOG, besides setting up the Ninja V to use Fuji, FLOg and FLOG gamut and yes i will install the flog lut to the Ninja is there anything I need to set on the X-T3 so it send the correct signal to the Ninja?
Thank you! When you say that it will only shoot in 1080p with the remote app- do you mean the camera will only record in that, or that the phone will only show 1080p but the camera will still record 4K if set? Thanks again for these video tutorials. I keep a playlist of your XT3 VIDEOS & a plethora of others as well. Extremely knowledgeable, Maarten.
Thanks, I do appreciate your kind words. The camera will only record 1080 when using the remote app. The camera settings are over-ruled, there are no settings in the app. This is actually an improvement, other Fujifilm models only record 720 using the remote.
Hello Maarten, great instructional video as always. I have a question regarding OIS, you mentioned (or suggested) to turn it on (if the lens has that function), is it OK to have the camera on a tripod using OIS for video?, I was told (at a camera store) not to use the OIS for stills on a tripod, is there a difference?. I apologize if this is an ignorant question, I’m on my first (and only) digital camera (Fuji X-T2). Thank you.
First, always nice to see your avatar in the comments, and a pleasure to read your kind words. Here's the thing, and there are no stupid questions (just intolerant instructors). A tripod (or a gimbal) is much steadier than a lens's OIS, or a camera's IBIS. Using these features always comes at a price - either there's a crop, or some other detriment. Then, on a tripod, as you slowly and carefully pan, the stabilization thinks that it should try to correct it, and when you exceed its boundary it jumps, defeating the whole slow and careful pan thing. Turn those features off when using a tripod. On a gimbal, you'll have to try as sometimes the camera/lens/gimbal combo seem to work and other times (or with other combinations) it doesn't. Hope this helps.
Just to follow on with Maarten's excellent reply: When using my Sony a6500 on a gimbal, I turn the stabilization ON if I will primarily be walking forward or backward, but tend to turn it off if I will be staying in one place and panning or tilting (or moving side to side trying to emulate a slider) when mounting the camera on my gimbal. But as Maarten suggested; experimentation will provide the best answer.
Great review!... Hopefully by the time I pull the trigger and buy the XT3 your videos will have trained me well. One thing I have not been able to determine from any XT3 review video is when using an external recorder (Atomos) can you confirm two things. When filming video in 4K DCI 60P, does it still crop in the sensor when sending over HDMI to the Atomos? Also, what is the maximum bitrate and supported codec when sending 4K DCI 60P over HDMI to the Atomos? Keep up the great reviews!
Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. The same image is sent to the HDMI out as is recorded on the SD card. The supported bit rates and codecs are selected and dependent on the external recorder. The camera outputs 4K 60p 4:2:2 10 bit.
Thank you so much for this Video. I have 2 questions: I have a blackmagic video assist 5" which i would like to use to record 10bit 422. Since the recorder can only record 1080p, is it possible to let the fuji x t3 downscale the hdmi out from 4k to 1080p, so I can record it? I would like a 4k to 1080p downscaled signal, not a native 1080p signal. 2. Where should I set the zebras in flog for overexposure and where for skintones? Thank you.
First, I would recommend that in order to take advantage of the capabilities of the X-T3 that you upgrade to a recorder that can handle 4K input, otherwise, your investment is not being well used. I'm not sure how you can distinguish between the two downsampling methods. How might a "native" 1080p signal (by which I assume you mean you've selected 4K in the movie mode settings) be different from a downscaled output to HDMI? If you were a product manager or engineer at Fujifilm would you instruct your developers to create two different downsampling algorithms? But yes, there is a "4K movie output" setting that allows you to output HD to HDMI while the movie mode settings are at 4K. You'll see this and more in my full review: ua-cam.com/video/WXX8acwyQPM/v-deo.html The second is a good question, and answering by saying that it depends on the scene and setting an accurate and useful exposure will depend on the lighting scenario and what exposure aspect (light areas, dark areas) you are intending to capture by using F-log, and then how you intend to colour grade the image. In general, however, I would advise you to use the histogram to make sure that you're keeping the overall exposure centred, and not overloading the highlights or shadows. I would use 100% as an overexposure setting, and 70% (or so) is usually considered optimal for the skin tone of fair-coloured humans. I hope this helps.
@@MaartenHeilbron i really appreciate your answer and time. Thank you. I ask the question about 4k downdcaling because right now im working with a gh4. The 4k which the gh4 can downscale to 1080p on the hdmi out looks much better then the 1080p it gives out when I am in 1080p mode. I guess it's because the 1080p on the gh4 is just not good, but the 4k is. So when I tell the gh4 to downscale the 4k to 1080p, i get that 4k picture, just downscaled, instead of that 1080p picture when I am in 1080p recording mode. I have no idea if the 1080p of the x t3 is an already downscaled 4k or if the sensor is using line skipping or something like that. I hope what I say makes sense :).

That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment, appreciated.
A few highlights:
- i watched dozens of videos about the X-T3 and they all say “you can’t lock your exposure settings in video mode in case you have to switch to stills for a couple of shots” You showed otherwise!
I'll have to watch it again to configure properly my cam and atamos...... thanks!!!!
It was a pleasure to read your very kind comment, thanks for taking the time.
As a new fuji-xt3 owner comng from sony, o really learned alot in this video and still have to learn, Maarten i sincerely thank you for this video that no other youtuber has made.
It’s a great pleasure to know that my viewers appreciate my videos, thanks for commenting.
Great explanation of F-LOG. I'll save it for situations that really need it.
If not now, when? Thanks for your kind words, always nice to know I've provided useful information.
I certainly appreciate your kind words, it's always nice to hear that I've provided helpful content. Thanks for sharing.
How kind of you to say, thanks for your thoughtful comments, they are appreciated.
Just picked up the camera today while shooting in India for a few months. Lots to absorb here but great content that I will refer to often. Thank you!
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, always nice to hear that my content is useful and appreciated.
Thanks for that! Always nice to hear from a new viewer who's found my videos worthwhile.
These are my go-to videos if I ever want impartial, informative camera information - thank you
That is exactly my goal, thanks for your kind words.
I don’t know if I’ve commented before but this video has helped me so much especially regarding focus settings, thanks so much.
I'm so glad! Always nice to know my videos are appreciated.
A vision of clarity, thank you for this! I'm a complete video novice and was able to follow along and get my XT3 all set up and ready to go. Great content.
A pleasure to read your kind words, it's always nice to know that my videos are helpful.
A million thanks! This video is so clear and packed with information I've had to watch it a few times, and took notes. I've always been a stills photographer, but have just been hired by a charity in Vietnam to do both stills and video. I am utterly lost, but I think you may have just saved me!
Great, always nice to hear that I've provided useful and helpful information for my viewers.
This was really helpful, thanks. A really good, no gimmicks insightful video with lots of practical tips. I'll be watching more of your content for sure. Cheers
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated!
I thoroughly appreciate your thoughtful and meticulously described videos.
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, I do my best to meet both of those criteria.
What an amazing tutorial, thanks Maarten! Wrote my first comment in 4 years for this video.
I'm so pleased to hear that you found my content useful, thanks for commenting.
Wow, this was incredibly professional and informative. Thanks a lot Maarten! Can't imagine how one could dislike a video like this.
Thank you, it was a pleasure to read your kind words. I'm an acquired taste.
Wow, the tips in this video are incredible. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
It's always a pleasure to read kind words from viewers who appreciate my videos.
Thank you, thank you. I recently got an X-T3 and this was the video I was looking for ... clear and concise instructions.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your kind words.
a much appreciated and informative breakdown. I'm getting my xt3 tomorrow. this is going to help a lot. thank you
Always nice to hear that my content is appreciated, thanks for commenting.
I can't tell you how many times I've referenced this video. Thanks so much!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for commenting.
Thanks for the tips! I'm subscribing. Watched 13 minutes of this one and had to stop for the night, but got a lot out of it, even for my X-T30. Thank you.
Always nice to know my videos are appreciated, thanks for commenting.
2021 and the XT-3 is going strong. Excellent review thank you!
You probably have several more good years to go.
I'm a little confused by your lighting choices, but this video is phenomenal.
This was not the ideal setting. We wanted the Tokyo tower in the background, and got locked to that idea even when we couldn't really light it properly. Otherwise, thanks for the kind words.
I was searching for a tutorial for recording video with the X-T3. This did the trick. Thanks!
So glad you found my video - and that you found it useful, thanks for taking the time to comment and the kind words.
Hehe, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Professionalism at it’s very best superb.
Thanks for your very kind words.
That's very kind of you to say - thanks for understanding exactly what I intend to do with my videos.
Always the most informative content! Thx Maarten!
A pleasure to read your kind words, appreciated with thanks.
Sir, this is the second video I see from you and I really love your way to educate and help us as a community. 🙏🔝🔝🔝
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. Please watch more!
thanks so much for this video. I'm new to fujifilm, mirrorless, and cameras with this type of technology. i had my settings so messed up and didn't have a clue how to fix them!
Always nice to know that my videos are useful and appreciated. Thanks for your kind words.
Once again, fantastic informative video with no BS just helpful information and honest opinions. Thanks for your constant help.
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Thank you Maarten for a superb illustration of the XT3 video settings. I'm new to video and your extensive and comprehensive tutorial is the best. Many thanks
Always nice to hear from a viewer who's enjoyed my video.
You are amazing! Thanks for this great starter video!
That's very kind, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great video, the Dynamic Range 400 tip was something I hadn't counted on in my learning, so it was really great to hear about that! Thanks a lot! :)
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Best video review for XT3 ever!!
Wow, thanks!!
Maarten Hi! As always your video helped me a lot to get to know more - understanding a great camera like fujifilm Xt3. Still watching other videos as I try to master this camera before I go out for a major shooting activity. Again thanks,
may you have a happy and blessed new year.
Thank you for your kind words and wishes, it's always nice to know i've been helpful.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, there are lovely beaches in Thailand, and I'll consider your kind offer for the next trip.
Such a great rundown, Maarten. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! Your kind words are appreciated.
It’s an extensive tutorial with full information. Thanks 🙏🏽 can I use the same settings for my XT4 camera? How to record video with 70-300 Fuji lens? Any special settings required?
These settings will work for the X-T4 also. No sure that’s a great lens for video, but same settings - unless there’s some specific situation.
The best tutorial on UA-cam! 🙌
What a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment and emoji.
Thank you Maarten, that was very helpful and no doubt saved me a lot of time. Cheers
That's very kind of you to say, and that's exactly what I'm going for. Thanks.
thank you for this.. it greatly helped me. there were a few parts where there were no video, just the blank youtube wallpaper. it would be good if you updated it with the footage.
Those blank parts are not part of the video - maybe you should check your connection?
Excellent walk-through. Thanks so much for putting this together!
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for commenting.
Perfect for all us Fuji Video Shooters. Thank you Maarten!
Always nice to know my videos have found their intended viewers. Thanks for the kind words.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Maarten!
Always nice to know my videos are useful and appreciated, thanks!!
As a new Fuji owner I’m very happy to have these great videos to learn from, Thankyou! 😁
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!
Thank you for this video Maarten. You truly are a gentleman, scholar and blessing when it comes to your tutorials. Wishing you the very best in 2020 and beyond my friend! 👍 & Sub'd
Thank you. It was a pleasure to read your kind words.
What an excellent video sir. Thank you for taking the time to make this content and share it.
That's very kind of you to say - and it is entirely my pleasure.
If this has already been addressed elsewhere online i am not sure, but with respect to overheating issues (if you don't mind), I have a two-part question:
i) When recording with an Atomos externally, is there a substantial reduction in the risk of overheating?
ii) Does anyone have any controlled data on overheating times on the Fuji X-T3 while using an external recorder at various settings, so as to be safe?
Maarten Heilbron actually what I mean lets say I do not have ND filter but set 1/4000 shutter speed so can it cause problem at video smoothness at 60 frames video?
Thank you so much! What a wonderful, detailed and useful video!
A pleasure to read you very kind words, thanks!!
Excellent! At 5:20 you advise to set ISO to Auto, but at 5:27 you say Auto ISO is not available. Please explain. Thanks,
Thanks, i appreciate the kind word. Sorry about the confusion. AutoISO is available, but you can't set the AutoISO settings as you can in stills mode.
How do you enter the on-screen menu that displays iso, microphone, aperture etc like at 12:15?
That appears in video mode - but you may need to visit the display customization screen for some items.
Dam I had no idea that plugging the charger for the grip will work while shooting, thank you for that useful tip! The whole video was great!
Thanks, always good to know I've provided at least one useful tip.
Thanks for all the videos, Maarten!
A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for commenting.
I don't understand in 5:25 in movie mode there is no auto ISO? But in 6:00 he said"if you decided to use manual ISO?" So you can choose auto or what?
I'm sorry if I garbled that. There is AutoISO in movie mode, but unlike stills, there are no settings (lower limit, etc) to adjust. And, of course, Manual ISO is also an option.
@@MaartenHeilbron ah.ok. Thanks
Always happy to help.
Thanks!
Fujifilm had promised this in the 2.0 firmware update. I haven't had the chance to try it out. Do you have firmware 2.0 installed?
I'm always happy to help. And we are both looking forward to the firmware updates, which, as you state, Fujifilm does better than anyone.
Very happy to find so amazing and clear content about the Fujifilm X-T3. I have a question about. When I record in H265 I can not import the files to Premiere 2019 and I have to convert the codec to H 264. How can I solve this problem? Thanks in advance
I wish I could help, I use FCPX and have had no issues.
I'd suggest you do a little research with Google - I found several useful explanations.
i've learned a lot from your youtube. you are great teacher for me. thx always
Thank you, that's very kind.
Many thanks for making this helpful videos with tips and hacks for T-3 users. Please make more, we'll be sure to subscribe and share ur videos.
I appreciate your kind words, thanks. You'll find more tips in my X-T3 review. ua-cam.com/video/WXX8acwyQPM/v-deo.html
And I am working on an X-T3 travel tips video.
the best tutorial on xt3 video .
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Helpful video - thanks. I'm thinking of getting this camera. You mentioned a better cinematic lens for shooting video with this cam rather than the stock lens. What would you suggest for stock studio shots please? Thanks
I appreciate the kind words. Fujifilm makes a couple of excellent cinema lenses - ua-cam.com/video/URaTdC-1MSA/v-deo.html
If those are beyond your budget, I shoot most of my content with the 16-55 F2.8. It's not par focal as such, but not bad.
Fujifilm 16-55 f2.8 LM lens is great for video! Appreciate your detailed review!
Agreed, and thank you for the kind words.
Always happy to help, I sympathize, there are so many details to consider with video.
Indeed right? Thank you, I'm watching some of your other videos right now. Subbed and following, hope you keep sharing!
Thanks, always appreciate kind words from my viewers - and welcome, always nice to have another subscriber.
Learned a few things for my XT-2 here as well! Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words, always nice to know that my videos are helpful.
Maarten awesome job like always!!! Thanks!
Thanks very much for sharing your kind words, appreciated.
Thank you so much. What is the highest usable ISO?
I appreciate your kind words, thanks! That probably depends on your standards, I’m good to about 6400, which I find to be better than average in 2018.
@@rajneessingh222 While I applaud your choice of monitor, you must also consider your audience, who don't have similar quality viewing equipment.
Using the silent menu, touch works well. Less so for the swipe gestures.
Thanks Maarten,
I enjoyed the fast pace that your video provided.
Incredible good videos so full of information, keep it up!
I appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Great information, but i can’t find PAL and NTSC setting in my XT-3 ..need suggestions please
@@kadeksriandari6214 It's no longer needed, always happy to help.
thank you so very much for making this very informative video. I am just getting into making videos and this is so helpful. I also find your reviews to be the best as they are very fair and your not a fan boy!
It was a pleasure to read your kind words, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hi do you have review or guide for atomos? You are the perfect teacher!
Sorry, I do not.
This is phenomenal, thank you. Although, with my XT30 through a external device (Blackmagic Mini) direct into OBS, there seems to be no way around a '4k Recording' symbol during recording. How on earth would I ensure a clean output??
That symbol is not coming from the camera. Maybe the Blackmagic. Does it have a setting to label an input? Unlabel it.
@@MaartenHeilbron Thanks for getting back to me... fixed. Quite simply, I was recording through OBS *whilst* recording simultaneously through cam. Quite the double fail there, but it' solved a separate issue for me also. Keep up the great content!
@@MrLiamCotter Always happy to help.
Awesome video, so glad i found it, thank you for making it!!
Glad you liked it! I appreciate your kind words.
@@kuau714 I assume you reviewed the HDMI out to configure to 4K and 10 bit, so nothing else is needed.
You helped me a lot ! Thanks from Germany . I subbed your Channel
Thanks for your kind words and subscription.
Superb explanation :) and thanks for sharing.
Thanks, I appreciate your kind words.
Awesome video. Thanks. This was very very helpful. Subscribed.
Thank you for your kind words, appreciated.
@@ManVersusCamera Thanks for adding your insight, appreciated - along with your kind words.
Very well done and really appreciated!
That's very kind of you to say, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Been running your videos all night. They must be well loaded because my tablet didn’t get stuck at all!
Nice!!!
all I can say this what call it video need to see in UA-cam thank you so much ,its really helpful and pro video
Thanks. A pleasure to read your kind words.
I have 2 questions:
I have a blackmagic video assist 5" which i would like to use to record 10bit 422.
You'll see this and more in my full review: ua-cam.com/video/WXX8acwyQPM/v-deo.html
The second is a good question, and answering by saying that it depends on the scene and setting an accurate and useful exposure will depend on the lighting scenario and what exposure aspect (light areas, dark areas) you are intending to capture by using F-log, and then how you intend to colour grade the image.
@@azamat19 I see. I guess I haven't given this issue much thought, as I only record in 4K.
nice - just got an X-T3 - thanks for the tips and hacks
