Nuka World on Tour DLC First Impressions: Is It Fun or Is It Done? | Fallout 76

  • The Nuka World on Tour DLC is currently live for testing on the PTS servers and it's already possible to have a full idea of all the new content arriving in Winter 2022. As such, I decided to share my first impressions after spending a few dozen of hours playing the new content, which includes four new events, a new boss, and at least 50 new free items to claim!
Despite the massive amount of new things, there's something missing with Nuka World on Tour DLC it's like a detached reality from the rest of the game. The perfect Utopian world taking place in its own sphere.

There is a theme to this update and it's that there is hope, even after the end. The idea is one similar to "The Postman" one of the inspirations of Fallout.
Behind the western town, on the hill are the trailers of the people running the show. Thier diaries provide more context as to why they are still running the carnival even after the war and its not only to help bring a sense of normality and joy where they go (they are following thier prewar route), it also gave them a reason to carry on and stick together as a group after the bombs fell.
They are simply a group doing what we in vault 76 are doing, rebuilding America in thier own way.
So yeah the appearance of a carnival operating normally in Appalachia is a bit jarring, but its intentional. Much like a Postman delivering mail like its a normal day long after the end of the world.

My dude up there thinking he's playing Metro, DayZ or the Last Of Us, not the game that was designed to poke fun of consummerism, retrofuturism and all 50s sci-fi cliches. Fallout was ridiculous since its conception, and even the sacred NV relied on crazy, senseless crap like Fisto, the Boomers, the Kings and the grandma supermutant to tell a story.

You are missing the fact atomic bombs dropped and irradiated monsters roam the lands. The only good concept in 76 is that we are the first vault dwellers released and get to "establish" the world we play in later fallouts. They keep pushing this line way too far with disjointed content in 76 that threatens the legitamacy of every fallout ever made. The idea that their latest focus was creating a carnival themed after a carnival already fully fleshed out in a previous paid dlc (also almost 100 years in the future) is insane and shows how little the crew understands the players.

Honestly this kinda fits, I grew up in WV and this reminds me of the county fair. We had chicken chases, games, etc.

@@zackx8005 There were three carnivals in the game already. Decisions like these are being made for marketing purposes, not creative ones. All Bethesda is interested in doing with the Fallout IP is selling iconography stripped of all tis original meaning. That's why a Nuka-Cola plant was used to produce an innoculation that anyone actually returning to W. VA. would have used the Arktos Pharma facility to produce.
Players are viewing, collecting and treating Nuka-Cola "merch" just as they do name brand merchandise being sold today, which proves to me that Bethesda has suceeded in "mainstreaming" the franchise to the point that most players today don't even know what the original Fallouts were even about.

@@alexwalters35 ok true the west virginia portion of the map. We are all saying an expansion of the map. Meaning a new map not the same one you know like elder scrolls online does with there's once or twice a year. Ohh wait it's on the same tech fallout 76 is only difference is ESO charges for more fallout don't and can't due to a promise made in the beginning. It's a money issue ESO charges money for everything fallout 76 does not and that is the truth in why we don't get things we all want and deserve as loyal players. No we get 99% rehashed shit or the same event with same rewards. Think about what you were just saying that they can't do anymore. They can do more but would require a new Mal that would be a fresh space to build in. Like I said Bethesda has ESO and they have been doing it for as long if not longer then fallout 76 so where's your excuses on that? The Pitt should've been a stand alone map to explore build in and enjoy like Appalachia is whole new map expansion not a rehashed daily ops with no timer. For what they gave us they should've just re opened up vault raids.

Honestly, much as people want story and depth, you know deep down Fallout 76 isn't built for that, it's just a live service game. As for the fun aspect, even if disjointed, it gives us something to do to get away from the grind for a bit, and I like that idea, something to do to socialize or just stop having to constantly shoot and loot.
If you want story and depth, look into nexus gems line for skyrim, they have mods that put road patrols and travelers into the world, many houses that you can use (I use a minimalist house myself that's under the waterfall outside of whiterun, compact with plenty of storage and all your crafting needs all in one hallway that takes maybe 5 seconds to sprint through), and a gem I love using more than anything, Inigo, a purple khajit that has his own long story tied to your own, over 1000 lines of fully voice dialogue, he'll whisper when you sneak, he has his own personal belongings he likes to carry, and he'll read you most books out loud if you sit somewhere with him, honestly the one mod I use anytime I play.

    Agree with you 176 %.
First There were yet 3 "empty" theme parks in Appalachia, and now there are 4... To me, it feels a bit like a lack of imagination... And it does not stick well with the idea I have of Fallout universe : So much amusement theme parks, while, right before the nukes, the Fallout world, according to official lore, was both at war with China since some years, in pandemic because of a chinese "blue flue", and in civil war because of more and more lacking resources !
I mean : Who wants to bring their children to theme parks with no money to eat ( which makes even more sense in Appalchia, since FO76 lore is about miners loosing their jobs to the benefit of robots and then striking and rioting to death against authorities ) ? Who wants to bring their children to theme parks while pandemics is going on ? Etc... Obviously, I am not saying there should not have any theme park in FO76 ( or FO4 ) but I think the lore has been totally ignored by Bethesda with stuff such as Nuka World being nearly polished places ( At least Wavy Willard's Water Park feels a bit "off", but yet, here again, I think some "closed for unlimited time" kind of warning panels at the entry or on the doors would have make a lot of sense... )
Indeed, the players having fun with Fallout games are mainly adults, and giving them inconsistent stuff, absolutely contemptuous with the global lore of the serie and their own games lore, is a bit like taking us for childish idiots.
Now, I am happy we at least have a new area to nuke to get a new boss : That's what I was expecting since a long time now.
Daily Ops are indeed boring as are usually procedural stuff, because of the repetitivity, and I am afraid the Pitt is also boring after a while because of this too ; Still, The Pitt might be yet a bit better because there is a real story behind it linking it to the Appalachia world, and I like the refugee theme... The issue being there's nothing more boring in this whole game than making the daily quests for refugees and you have to do it each time and for ever !
I.R.L. , when my health was better, I have been a volunteer and even an activist for human rights, and I have been alongside asylum seekers to help them, day after day, for several years... I hope I'll be able to get back to that struggle one day but for now my health condition makes me trying to occupy my mind and having some fun with Fallout games and modding. I don't want to make repetitive fake tasks for fake refugees even if I feel the initial idea was such a great one because it might help to raise some awareness...
But who wants to spend so much time in front of loading screens while telporting from a place to another to take a picture of that robot here, to pick a plant of that specie there, or to FEDEX some data here and there in interiors places to be sure to have even more loading screens ? I am ok with giving some materials. Cooking becomes a lot boring after a while, there's not even multiple recepipes and useless ingredients adding to the difficulty of the task, that's just an easy and mindless task about picking stuff on shelves... Very intense isn't it ?
I mean, beyond the human scope of meeting people from far countries and becoming friends in struggling together for human right, of course... In real life, helping refugees ( or/and asylum seekers ) was a lot harder and more intense than in FO76 : I had to learn new languages, to make files for them and to fight in court against the State which always tries to force out everybody, even to use my car as a barricade against cops in front of an empty building we were occupying since monthes, etc... In Fallout 76 we are in a post-apocalyptic world and there are no bloody eagle, no raiders ( or even no ghouls / no robots, as we are in Whitespring ) to make raids against this occupied building ? The Steel Brotherhood is not pissed of with the Samaritans having a hovercopter while they have not ? Refugees don't have better stories to tell than being fan of nice clothes or comics ? Ok, all the FO76 The Pitt pre-content is not so bad, but... It's just neither not so good. The idea behind was great, but while it would feel like an awesome job for a tiny dev team, it feels quite insufficient for a bigger one such as we would expect for an online game with very expansive paying contents / subscription to support them.
Regarding to The Pitt expeditions themselves, ok, that was good for me, at least better than Daily Ops, because of the story behind it, the new factions and the multiple randomized tasks ; It was all ok, as long as there were good rewards to get from the earned stamps... However, rewards are not all so good and I won all of them since a long time by now, as most of the hardcore gamers who played the Expeditions a lot when it was released.
I find it really unfortunate that there is this bug making it difficult to access the map "The Trench", and that the Trench ending is so random regarding to succeed in saving the 3 people, because it ends in all players only playing The Factory map again and again at high speed, which adds a lot to the boredom feeling.
I might be wrong, but I guess Fallout 76 only gets closer and closer to its death now, maybe the closer we get to the release of Starcraft ?
That's a pity because I think more stuff could have been added to the main quest for high-level players after killing the Scorched Beast Queen, maybe fighting The Enclave or IDK. More stuff also with moleminers as the new boss they chose to create should typically be connected to them ?
They chose to scatter a lot when they already had a unique concept (throwing atomic bombs which modifies _a bit only, sadly, we are not in a Battlefield game_ the online map !) and a very rich and characteristic post-apocalyptic main story that was just waiting to become more fleshed out and eventually cult.

I agree. The idea is amazing and I’m so excited for it. But I wish they maybe explained more of why it’s here in Appalachia. I know it’s a travelling amusement park, but why did they stop in Appalachia? Will they ever leave for their next destination? I feel like even just a little amount of lore can help it make more sense.
Like maybe they had to stop in Appalachia due to their convoy of transport vehicles pulling all the carnival stuff broke down due to 25+ years of improper maintenance and lack of resources to fuel the vehicles. That could easily explain why they are now suddenly here in Appalachia and why they aren’t(I’m guessing) leaving.
Idk maybe it’s been explained already in a terminal somewhere. But from what I can see and what I’ve had heard about it, it seems to lack that reasoning of “why”

Nice Raider Costume, Innov! Great Video, and thank you for your thoughts on Nuka World on Tour (and the state of the game of late). I think looking back on it, it's a predictable pattern. 76 is run from the Austin studio, which has a predominant strength in online games. They received a lot of support from the 'Old Guard' that had built Fallout 3 and 4, but that old guard has, over the course of the past 18-24 months, left Bethesda to other ventures, and in 1 tragic case, left us altogether from this world :( This means we're left with a studio (Austin) which is used to a much younger 'Grind! Grind! Grind!' repetitive activity heavy player base for their previous games in charge of a franchise which has been (or had been to this point) an extremely dark yet humorous but story rich world, and which they have little experience in managing/creating. Thus Fallout 76 has morphed into the sort of game that it is today. A game that with each passing 'DLC' begins to feel more disjointed and less tied down to the original story. It's not that the new activities aren't fun, because they are, but that they are fun 'isolated' activities as opposed to something that feel part of a greater storyline. In that regard (the greater story), Bethesda has left it up to us, the players, to fill in the blanks by having the community do Role Playing and Theatre and Podcasts and all sorts of other complementary material to 'fill in the gap.' But the primary driver for the story of Fallout should perhaps be the company that owns the IP? But that's just my take as a cranky 'not too old yet' Fallout fan XD

No npcs in sight! Just like how they introduced the hellcat mercenaries with virtually no lore.. Just like the shamozzle of the vault raids. At least they kinda backed up canceling nuclear winter with zax with an atom store hellfire dungeon boss.. Enclave story anyone??
For reference look at some of the after market mods for falloutl4. They come with better stories and quests just for one weapon! What happened to "true choice and consequences for the wasteland"? It was the catch phrase for Wastelanders.. What happened to all the cryptid hunting? It was the catch phrase to wild Appalacia. At least Aries got some follow up use.. Blue Ridge? You're 100% right with your opinions and I couldn't agree more. For me FO76 lost the whole post apocalyptic survival aspect years ago (which is where I started to draw the line). It was rough at launch and they have continously stepped in the wrong direction with major changes (besides Wastelanders) i.e. enemy leveling, daily ops, food/water change, and more. Nuka-World is merely a nail in the coffin. There needs to be more enjoyable things to do on downtime, which this game is 95% of. "Events" are not an exciting content option to me at all. The newer ones have been alot better, but most of the time it's all busy work. You have to do petty busy work just to go to The Pitt. Cook some food to charge a battery "woo-wee, *slaps knee*", how stupid is that, honestly. I was hyped to hear we was getting dungeons, then that turned into daily ops. It wouldn't be so bad if there was an incentive to grind them back to back, but there's not. I always get the same rewards too. Never something new. I'm not capturing biofluid for the billionth time to light some lighthouse that has no significant meaning. There's armor I legitimately want, but after a year of grinding the resources to earn it the rng is so low I can't even roll what I want/need. What's the point though when enemies aren't difficult anyways? They have always put a limit on an already limited game. It's 2022 (almost 2023) and I can't even play crossplay with my mates. It's super cool we have another boss, even though there's no real boss mechanic to them yet again, but we should have twice as many by now. It sucks. I truly want to enjoy the game, but it's so dry and the only source of nourishment is the dribbles of the atomic shop which isn't okay.

  • @groovymarlin

I agree with those saying we'd rather have a new map expansion instead of an instance like The Pitt. Also, I did expeditions maybe twice, and then gave up. Maybe they'd be more fun in a team (I was solo), but I've heard lots of stories of team leads griefing, so that's out. At least as a solo player, expeditions are like daily ops except an hour long and with way worse rewards. Seriously, the rewards are PITIFUL. Why bother? I am glad they're adding a new world boss, and I guess the "fun" aspect of Nuka World doesn't bother me too much. But if there are diary entries that explain the lore of the touring show, why couldn't they put that into a quest or something, or have an actual NPC explain it? I think it all comes down to $$$.

Let's be honest, Bethesda completely abandoned lore with 76. All the cryptids, the supermutants and BOS - none of it made sense. It would have been so little effort to turn this into an expedition so that it maintained lore, but apparently they don't care. I gave up on the game long ago now, but the one thing that would bring me back is new FREE story DLC.

I bet a lot of it seems lost in translation rather then in content. The idea is a for one reason or another a tour from Nuka World is still on Tour, and using it's means to collect caps or money for rewards. It's not hard it's a traveling caravel, but many places in the world might not allow such anymore for health and safety or some such.

As excited as I am about this new DLC, I can ABSOLUTELY agree with you. Fallout 76 has sort of lost sight of the narrative. It's slowly turning into a minigame server. What happened to us the player rebuilding the world? 76 is supposed to take place the earliest in the Fallout timeline, the world was absolutely destroyed 25 years ago; and yet we now have wacky amusement parks and carnival games. How?? Wastelanders was an okay update but I'll be honest, I was one of the F76 players who enjoyed the fact that there were no human NPCs. It felt real. It felt dark and depressing. It was truly FALLOUT. Sidenote; I am also sort of crushed because my CAMP has been at Lake Reynolds since the beta. I will no longer be able to keep my camp there going forward. I suppose I have no choice but to move 🥲

I completely agree with you in regards to it being tonally out of touch, I've been harping on about 76 not being gritty enough or developed enough for a long time now. but honestly - I don't think people will really care. I think folks have given up and stopped looking for good stories in 76, usually the ones we do get from the main team are pretty rough. I still haven't gotten over how badly Steel Reign screwed over the Raiders.

  • @domenicopisano4383
    @domenicopisano4383 Рік тому

I understand the concerns about being more and more soulless. Building stuff in a narrative that is in the early years of Fallout creates forceful dynamics in the story that in the end bring a huge limitation due to what we have experienced already in the future of the other titles. Making something significant in Fallout 76 can determine inconsistencies in the universe established in Fallout 3/NV/4, reason why I can't see this game progress further in its story except for making new POI or expeditions. The map feels by the day older and older with nothing much else to offer and I see fewer people play Expeditions and I amongst them got bored as well on how repetitive it feels. I gave this latest update a chance before deciding for leaving or not, and I ended up playing less as a consequence, and since this next update doesn't seem like much then I will invest time in more games that deserve my interest.

I played the PTS the first time it came out, but decided not to, when I found out, my character was reset to the level 35 snapshot, ugh...
I also totally agree about The Pitt, it's really starting to get as repetitive as Daily Ops, and that stinks!

I’m PSN so I’ve not played, but I’ll say what makes 76 so amazing is all the environmental story telling that you have to look for. There is so dang much outside of quests. All the story telling gets you in all the feels for the lore of fO in general. I’m for fun, but would like it felt like FO and had environmental telling.
Edit: maybe the issue is people who are working on it who’ve never played fO to get why the FO players have been around so long and have such a huge age range due to story.

First time viewer. I am in my sixties and played 76 often in the last year or two. I played ESO for years but got bored with it. You can complete all the quests in a new dlc in a few evenings taking your time. All my pals from ESO are only raging through "vet" content and that doesn't entertain me. As for 76, I just do mindless murder of any nasty things I come across. I would much rather they create new long form or very long form quests and perhaps expand the map a bit. I never play in a group because I am just not that interested in making my character "meta" enough not to embarrass myself. And I rather like playing solo. This next dlc looks like something that will occupy my time for a few evenings and then bore the snot out of me. All that said, I just need a new game on the scale of ESO, but with a different theme. Your costume was very nicely done. I hope you enjoyed putting it together, it looked like a fair bit of work.

I think F76 shares the same problem with much of the games/entertainment industry, in that they are creatively bankrupt. Everywhere, you see studios pumping out content just for the sake of pumping out content. Most of the time it just misses the mark. Good content is content that is culturally relevant, and speaks to peoples' subconscious thoughts. There is ALWAYS the potential to make amazing content. It's just that today's creators are either inept, unwilling, or afraid to make it.

My opinion is any content is good for the game. That being said, if we're looking at the company and what this game is, it is an MMO. While the type of game does have a story line, that wont keep players engaged in these types of games. I mean look at all the other story driven DLC's. They can be completed in no time flat. Yeah it ties it to the world you're in, but once its done, its done. This kind of content is trying to add engagement, purely to keep players attention to keep playing. From a business standpoint, knowing bathesda's record of behind the scenes work and issues, they're probably trying to get content at the quickest and lowest amount spent to us. Is it what we would want? Probably not for most or those who are so deeply into the fallout world. Is it something to keep player count up? anything at this point would hopefully bring players back or keep them logged on. Maybe something will be added later that could tie it all together as little patch updates with holotapes or other npc's in the world already. Ill do anything for a little more engagement in the game to be honest while they work on the next Fallout, because thats truly where i want the bread buttered

My personal opinion on the last few updates including nwot is this
The pitt - extremely disappointing they went with a daily ops/vault raid like gameplay rather than a second map a lotta people wanted, its the best tho for legendary item gain, xp gain and module gain
Nwot - its nice to have a 3rd region boss finally but youre right it seems like this update was more for kids than it was us adult players, if it was centered around the wastelanders raiders expanding out and them finding this stuff like it was all "left over goodies" for a few decades ig they'd make sense, the events too if they were raider/nw themed like some special creatures with nw armor and raiders wearing nw armor thatd fit but rn with it being robots as far as ive seen doesnt ig, im just disappoint fully on the whole no recipes to make nuka cola like wtf they literally are about to miss that absolute golden opportunity to do that and i cant believe it.. it literally looks like they went with the "we'll give nuka cola as a reward way" and not even most of the nuka either from gamermomover50s video it looked like it only gave regular and cherry, no quantom, orange, grape or cranberry which is ridiculous
