Woodturning a cube inside a cube (Captive cube puzzle)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2017
- In this video I turn a log of wood into a cube with another cube inside it. Watch as I uncover the mystery of how to woodturn a cube on a lathe that usually makes things round, and the process of how to create a second free floating cube inside it.

Would have never guessed that a cube could be turned on a lathe much less with a captive one inside. Awesome!
Amazing Steve! Fantastic turning and that spalted beech really adds to the illusion 🤠🇬🇧🤠👍👍👍
Hey Tom, thank you, yes the spalting really does make the piece look beautiful. Thank you for watching and commenting, regards Steve.
Wat a brilliant piece. Amazing talent. First time seen that done.
I have to say this was incredible will have to try it at some point
Absolutely brilliant. Just working out how to turn a cube using a tool essentially designed to make cylinders. And then the captive cube...you are a very clever man, good sir.
That's really good. I've never seen a cube being made on a lathe or this illusion being made on one either.
Thanks Brendan after seeing it being done with a metal lathe, and wooden ones being made with a drill press, I couldn't resist giving it a try 😁
Thanks for watching Brendan, regards Steve.
Fantastic and very inventive. 👊👊👊
Great job steve, turning a cylinder into a cube, who would have thought it lol.
A cool project, I enjoyed it
Cheers
Rob
LOL when I told a friend as work that I made a cube on my lathe he looked at me as if I had gone bonkers !!! Ha ...... Cheers mate, thanks for watching. Steve.
I agree with everyone else. A great tutorial video and your commentary was great.
Thank you Drew !! I was a little unsure on the commentary, but it seems that folk are enjoying it, so maybe a few more tutorial videos will be the way to go. Appreciate your watching and commenting, regards Steve.
Very cool. I’ve made these on the drill press, never thought it could be done on the lathe.
Hey Gary, yeah I have seen plenty made on the drill press and with a router, but like you I am not sure if I have seen a wooden one turned on a lathe. Thanks for watching and commenting, regards Steve.

brilliant, when you had the photos up the other day I thought you had started with the outside cube already cut and planed, Superb work
Hey Wayne !! yeah you can start that way, but with the original video that Curtis challenged me with the guy started with a piece of round stock, so I wanted to copy the technique he used but on the wood lathe. Thanks for watching mate, glad you enjoyed it !! Steve.
Wow, just wow!

Templeboy Turnings who thought that you could turn a cube. It almost sounds impossible.
dude- that is so awesome
Thanks Jimi !! Glad you like it man :-) Appreciate the watch and comment. regards Steve.
So far this is pretty awesome. The rectangle happened because your tennons were made on adjoining sides but not an end. Notice you cut off the thickness of a tennon? How do you spell tennon anyway?
nrdy grl Thanks a million for watching and commenting, yeah I guess that makes sense alright. I think working with a scrap sacrificial glue block would work out better maybe.
Thanks again, regards Steve.
Brilliant! You made it look easy but I'm sure it isn't.
Hey Rob, it not as difficult as it looks buddy, I guess the tricky part is the undercutting to form the internal cube, but as long as you work to equal depths on all sides it works out OK. Thank you for watching and commenting. Steve.
Excellent...
Cheers...
Thanks a million Adam 😀 Appreciate your watching and commenting mate !!
Awesome. What did you do to your right hand?
Thanks Michael !! Nothing lol its red paint from another project I was working on :-D ....... I lent on the rag I cleaned the brush with !! Ha Ha good observation though !! Thanks for watching and commenting. Steve.
Nice work!
Thank you Andy !! Glad you like it mate, thanks a million for watching and commenting. Steve.
Thank you for sharing!
Wow that’s amazing steve ! Is I’ve to try it but I don’t know if I have the patience
Thanks man !! Its really not that difficult and you can make it easier by starting with a cube of wood to start with !! I received your stickers the other day too thanks a million :-) .... Thanks for watching and commenting. Steve.
I was playing with my Daughter and had a thought. Would it be possible to turn a baby rattle?
Yes buddy I have made a lot of rattles. I make Rattle spinning tops, which are great for the early years as a rattle and then can be used as a top when the child gets older ;-)
It’s alright I spose mate, it could have been a bit more woody though! 🤣😂🤣
Yeah I'm sorry Dave, I tried extracting as much wood out of the wood as possible, but it just wasn't a woody piece of wood I'm afraid mate. Maybe sharper tools or a lot more practice woodturning would help. Or maybe I'm just rubbish and I should just give up !!!
Thanks for you constructive criticism mate, it's really helped me to try and give a shit 😉
Regards Steven !!
TEMPLEBOOM I AM A WINNER
Thank you !!
