- This video shows the method that I use to produce an Emerging Bowl. Many thanks to Ron Radliff for the inspiration and help in getting me to the point where I could understand the technique.

I will be trying this one. I am a woodworker but havent been turning very long, just a few months. Your video on beginers boxes was the first turning video I ever watched. I have turned about hundred boxes now and have tried some different methods but keep going back and watching that video. Thank you it has helped me so much.
Wade Couch Hi Wade, thank you for your kind words and support my friend, I really do appreciate it.

Mike
Fantastic job Mike! I've got to try one of these. Thank you so much for sharing your talents.
Take care,
Carl
Carl Jacobson Thanks Carl, they are really fun to turn.
Make sure you have a "Robust" glue joint though ;)

Mike,
Thanks for sharing this. I am in the process of trying this technique.
Vaughn Bradley My pleasure Vaughn, let me know how you get on mate :)

I made my first emerging bowl today. It turned out great and the hot glue was a lot stronger than I ever thought it would be. Thank you for the help.
The White City Woodworker Glad it worked out OK for you, and the pleasure is mine.
Take care
Mike
Fantastic job! I have tried this before with written directions. And it appears to be like my first grade teacher said, "does not follow instructions well". Seeing it done I am ready to do this right. Thanks Mike and all involved. Thanks to Woodchuckers also one of the best FB pages ever!
Butch Shelton Thank you Butch, I assure it took much contact with Ron, for me to get the method in my thick skull, but persistence finally paid off ;)
Take care
Mike
Mike, I tried your hot glue idea to re-mount a completed large ash bowl so I could remove a badly applied finish and start over. This was my first attempt at using wipe on poly. Anyway, I hot clued the bottom to a waste block, sanded, re-finished and removed the bowl...no problem. Thanks for this great tip. Hot glue will hold very well.
+Gary McCoy
Hi Gary, I'm glad you agree with my faith in hot glue and it's reliability. The key is to make sure that the glue is as hot as your gun will get it, and that the glue block, and piece to be turned are dry, which I realise you already know :)
Take care
Mike
I'm very impressed Mike. Very effective, and a little conundrum for those who don't know anything about wood turning!
+SAMRODIAN
Thank you Sam appreciate it my friend
Cheers
Mike
thanx Mike, I'm fairly new to turning and every night I'm on you tube looking for ideas and I find your channel not only informative but also very easy to follow, Ive tried a few things out and they have worked, just got to save up for a better set of chisels, but in the mean time I will keep on turning with what Ive got, cheers Mike.....
+paul martin
Hi Paul, I'm well pleased that you find my videos of some use. Thanks for your kind words and support, I really do appreciate them both.

Glad you're going to have a go Kenny ... you'll enjoy it when you do.
What a beautiful job my friend and very clear instructions. I might have to try something like that soon. I can't believe how nice a finish you got on that and you weren't even trying. You my friend are a true master at this craft.
Cheers.
Albert
Al Furtado Thanks Albert, your kind words are much appreciated my friend.

Thanks Mike. Our local turning club demonstrated this 5/13/2018. First time I seen or heard of it. So I immediately came to see if you made one. Yes, Good old Mike best demo man on the web. Our guy did a great job, but what can I say, I am addicted. Ha .. Love your method also. Marvin from Texas..
You're very kind, thank you

Mike, I had a fun time doing one of these, and have to do more, maybe a couple dozen so I can demo it. I did post a link to it on Sawmill Creed forums under a thread about scrap wood turning projects. Layout is pretty critical on getting an even rim thickness. I found out I could 'cheat' a bit when power sanding the inside to remove a bit extra, and by rounding over the edges a bit, I can hide most of it. I don't think 'perfect' lay out is possible. Great project. Oh, I never use hot melt glue, but did for this one. It does work.
robohippy I am so pleased you enjoyed making them Reed, as you say accuracy is paramount. Thanks for the "cheat", I will remember that. I am also honoured that my "inspirer" has been "inspired", if you get my meaning. Also glad you finally gave the hot glue a try, and liked it :)

Mike
Woooooot I'm a woodchucker lol. Thanks Mike. Love your work.
Welcome, and thank you Don.
Thanks Mike! I've been wanting to know how these were made... I've seen still pictures of the pieces and short teaser videos, but this is the first beginning to end 'making of' video I've seen. Beautiful piece it is too! I'm going to have to try one of these someday soon. (I'm making a list) ;)
cheers! Thanks again!
That's clever. You did a great job on explaining how this was made.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
baconsoda Thanks Brendan, and as you know I find "clever" difficult ;)

Hi Mike! That is a great project, very nice little bowl and fantastic the way to do it. Now that I think of it, it is like a multi axis turning with two perpendicular axis. Quite ingenious. Thank you very much for sharing! Cheers! Daniel

What a COOL idea, Mike. Never heard of an Emerging Bowl before but you must know that I'm going to steal this idea and, of course, take complete credit for its invention!! All kidding aside, thanks for sharing that, Mike. Another great idea from Mr. Waldt!!!!
Take care,
.....Gord
Gord Rock Thanks Gord, the whole idea of our videos is for people to "steal" ideas, so they can enjoy them. I've certainly stolen a lot of yours. I wish the idea was mine, just passing on someone else's :)

Erik Anderson That is really great news my friend, send her my love and best wishes.
Now that is really clever, I've never seen one before and was pretty confused on what you were doing until you said to cut it in half to make two blanks.
Great demonstration Mike, can't wait to see how the other half turns out Lol :-)
All the best
Tony
***** Thank you Tony, "clever" is too strong a word for me mate......"fortunate" is more fitting me thinks ;)
I have quite a few "other halves" now......actually I've two in real life as well!!.....lol

Mike Waldt I've done some work on the lathe but still learning basic skills. I will! Cheers.
That is one very convincing looking little bowl! I was sure you were going for full size, never thought to make a small version of something just to show the technique, nice!! I've seen so many of these lately, I guess it's the new natural edge bowl of the summer? :) Thanks for the upload, perfectly explained, and yes, I also use hot glue and trust it, but I do need to get a new gun, my old one gives me problems with the glue feed...
yuval lahav Thanks Yuval, I just thought a "miniature" bowl would be easier to explain the methods, and quicker ;)
Hot glue is a very secure fixing method I agree.

Mike
Wow. Just wow. Truly tremendous work, Mike!

An interesting and fun project to attempt. The confidence you express with in the hot adhesion was eye opening. How long must the pieces be clamped before they can be then worked? Also, I agree with Mr. Paramore ~ Small pieces would make good fixtures in a doll house. I enjoy the videos you share, Thank You.
Torvig Johnson Thanks Torvig, when I use hot glue, and stresses will be put on it, I like to let it completely dry, and leave it for 10 - 15 minutes. Thanks for watching.

Great video Mike. I've been wanting to attempt one of these for awhile, but the instruction I saw at a club recently seemed to over complicate it somewhat( "you MUST do it this way" etc.). Thanks for simplifying things! All the best.

I suppose I'll just have to accept that that's what experts are supposed to do. 😀
Glad you liked it Graham ...expert .. nothing could be further from the truth my friend :)

Beautiful video, Mike.
The small bowl almost looks like the parts in a Catholic church. Where then holy water in it and cross themselves the churchgoers. :-)
You could also sprinkle with top coat and make a small birdbath in the tree. -D
But the bowl looks really great.
Günter Schöne Thanks Gunter, good idea with the bird bath, would have to be a bit bigger though ;)

Hi Mike......Nice job !!
Can't make my mind up if its a wash hand basin or a toilet for a dolls house . sorry;)
Seriously though this is a very clever and fairly simple project very well explained.
And may I just add that this is just my opinion and there are many more people out there with much more experienced opinions than mine (Sorry again,I can't help myself)
Love the fancy graphics at the start
As always another great vid
All my very best!!!!..............Andy
Andy Paramore LMAO Andy, your dry sense of humour is right up my street my friend, and thank you also. No need to explain your comments, let others think what they think, I learnt that lesson, very recently ;).

An excellent demonstration Mike, contains everything required to make an attempt. I've had reasonable success with hot glue, but I'm not sure my machine gets warm enough. It also has a useless nozzle, not a fine little pipe like yours! Could I ask which gun you use?
Many thanks for sharing,
Tom
Tom Stratton Thank you Tom, I have the Bosch PKP 18E, which has served me very well for nearly four years now, here's the link

Once I have a bigger lathe I'll have a go with my own stack of monkey puzzle. Anyway and as ever, you've inspired me!
Thank you Dylan.
Mike your videos got me hooked! These wood turning videos are mesmerizing and I want to start turning myself. I was wondering if you have any input on affordable tools/lathe that are good for beginners. Cheap as possible without buying total crap tools would be nice as I am very young (15). Thanks so much, keep putting out videos!
Luc Lachapelle Hi Luke, and thank you. Are you in the UK?

great job mike

Thanks Mike an excellent Demo. Have you thought about adding a lid to create a box?
Glad you liked it Ray, that's a great idea, will do that in the future.

Great video MIke. I wish it had been a couple of months earlier though. lol I could have used the technique for the footplate of my traction engine project.
I also use hot glue regularly. After some disasters at the beginning, I find it invaluable. When I first started using hot glue I used a very cheap glue gun (from Woolies) and it simply did not get the glue hot enough. I bought an Arrow brand gun from Axminster, and never looked back. I also made the mistake of trying to hot glue green wood. That doesn't work either.
Keep 'em coming, and ignore the haters. I have learned loads from watching your videos, and in all honesty - no-one really cares who thought of it first. I think I'm the first person to turn a gum-ball machine because I haven't seen any others - but I'll be willing to bet I'm probably not.
Tom Speirs Thanks Tom, glad to see you champion hot glue as well. i'd like to see this gum ball machine :)
Take care
Mike
I've got some foties of it on my turning Facebook page Mike.
facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1425605837762555.1073741830.100009394584199&type=3
This was my first project that was not something standard. I like to try doing something unusual at least once a year, hence the massive hourglasses and the traction engine.
Tom Speirs I'll pop over and have look, and leave a comment there mate :)
