- How To Make A Cryptex Puzzle Box
Leonardo da Vinci Cryptex, In this video I turned a Cryptex using the lathe. The Cryptex recently became popular with the move The Da Vinci Code. This really is a pretty easy woodturning project a lot of it is done with forstner bits. This is a very unique, and fun puzzle box.

I really wasn't planning on watching a half hour video on woodturning a cryptex. But I ended up watching the whole thing and I don't regret it. Fantastic work!
Ruud Pollé Thank you very much!
same here. I don't know why it's always fascinating to see people working at what they do best
Ruud Pollé Maaaaan ... same thing here ... :D
same, i dont even have a lathe but dammit i want one now
Watching wood turning is probably the most relaxing thing I've seen in awhile.
Thank you, It's a great past time.
Very nice! My grandfather worked as a woodturner his whole life and he taught me the basics when I was a child. I have not tried it for 30 years though. Would be fun to try it again.
Great video! 27 mins and not boring at all!
Thank you
That was absolutely brilliant. Till the last moment i couldn't figure out the whole idea of how you're gonna lock it. Absolutely fantastic..
Vamsi Krishna Reddy Thank you very much Vamsi
S - H - A - R - E is the key to the cryptex
Don't apologize, the longer the video the better! It's fun to watch.
Don't worry carl, For such an amazing and complicated project it's short enough
Thank you very much Niels!
I don't ever plan on learning how to woodturn but i really enjoyed this. Thanks Carl.
Amazing! Great! You're a master!
Do you guys want to know why I love to watch this guy so much. Its because is very intellectual and very hand on, and so far that I can see is very courteous to his viewers.
Alexander Drake Thank you so much Alexander for the kind words.
No thank you for inspiring the greater person in me
gotta rewatch these oldies but goodies every now and then!
This was one of my favorite projects! Thanks Nathan!!
Wow you sir, are amazing I'm not very old and don't really have experience with tools like these and i somehow managed to understand exactly what you were doing. Good job keep up your amazing work.
TheVideoBoy Thank you very much
This is really cool. I wish i have enough equipment for this :)
Anyone could make one of those with specialized tools, but you made it with basics. That's what makes it so awesome. That's Awesome Carl
Love how you approach dealing these round bits of wood with the chisel. a true craftsman indeed.
***** Thank you very much
Very complex and well made, I made one and it works great. Good job on the build one new sub Jacobson
Better lathe than never.
LOL!
I don't have the time, money or patience to do something like this. Yet I've just sat and watched the whole thing in awe and fascination. What a wonderful video and I'm just left speechless by the skill.
Alun Murch Thank you very much Alun
The amount of craftsmanship is astonishing!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate that!
cause of my musical passion i would say the secret word is "ZAPPA" ;-). Nice job!!!
You dude, you are a genious
TheMoorb :) Thank you very much!
This is a beautiful piece of woodwork. Great job
break . thats thing is so awsome, i actually watched the hole thing with out skipping threw it , it really is amazing on how much can really be made from wood with the right tools
Carl Jacobson ahh man :) . me an my dad love makin things from wood we made bird house condos , our own ornaments for the tree an decorations for the yard , he also made a rc tunnel boat for me i plan to get up a runnin again in the future .
For added security, have you considered putting a group of false sets? Additional notches for the pins to go in that don't line up but would at least give the illusion that it has been cracked. It won't be a huge hindrance, but it would at least slow someone down if they simply try to solve it with trial-and-error brute forcing.
Captain Shoutyface. That's a good idea, I haven't played around with the design much.
I don't believe that would work. The way it is now every dial needs to be set correctly for it to provide any feedback. Additional full length notches would add solutions (so SHARE and SHAVE might both work), while half-notches would tell the code-breaker that they have some of the letters correct - it would still take a long time, but not as much as having to try every possible solution. False sets would be good if there were only one pin, but since every dial has it's own pin it doesn't need any.
***** Well, you wouldn't make full notches, just a half notch, or whatever. Remember the old bike locks? You can pick those easy. You just pull on it a tiny bit then turn the dials till you get some play from side to side then move to the next one. I would make every second letter a false notch with only one of them being a full notch. Then I would make it all a bit tighter so you don't get any of that side to side play when it's locked. Not fool proof, but an improvement. You just need to take your time and clean your edges and round your corners so you don't get jammed up.

Very cool project. What is the name of the parting tool you used that was thin and had a curve in it? Tried finding it but no luck. Thanks.
This is awesome! thanks for the great video!
Nice work, this will be my next project :) Good job! :)
Mickey Flexx Thank you Mickey, I'd like to see pics when your done.
Deal :)
Nice detailed video. I dont have a lathe, but i do have a 3d printer. hmmmm.....
This is awesome! Very cool to see made by hand and not molded from plastic!
+thebrandenburgify Thank you very much!
I'm inspired! I cannot wait to set up a little workshop in the shed one day.
And how wonderful that you took the time to share your skill and then even gave away the work piece.
great stuff!
Thank you Adrian
I was bound to get here somehow... I think this is enough internet for one day.
haha, Thats perfect. Me too!
Mark Ränd Dude same!
i started watching drifting
NECROPOSTING!
amazing i want one :)
+sabar zaza Thank you Sabar!
This is AWESOME... I have been turning pens for a few years, and I love the relaxation I get from turning... I think I might give this a shot just to try something new. Thank you for the great video!
Thank you Brad,
This project was a lot of fun.
Take care,
Carl
That is AMAISING!
Kevin Regan Thank you Kevin
I'm positive it's "SHARE". I wrote down the letters I could see in a grid based on different views we get in the video... :-) (it's share, or whatever word is two above "CVXZO")
Yes it was share, Clayton got it.
Can I buy one of those somewhere ? It's awesome but i'm pretty sure I won't be able to make it by myself :(
vous seriez près a mettre combien pour l'acheter? Car le travail ce paye
this is some hard work and requires loads of patience...u r seriously awesome man...
Master piece and perfect wood craft
Thank you
If I had those kind of machines at home I would not be sitting behind my pc XD
Petitprox Right? :)
i watched all of it and the finished work is so so so awesome!! I subscribed as well! i would love to try it on my own but here's the problem.. you have way too many machines that regular people (like me) don't have. Please make a more simple version of it that someone can make even without that many machines! Thank you and keep up the good work!!
THANK YOU
I loved watching your video of you making this wooden cryptex box
as i do not have any equipment for turning wood
i can not make one myself
but it was really interesting seeing how the lock works
excellent job
your really clever at wood working !
Excellent !
Konstantin Kokkorakis Thank you very much! This was a fun project.
Really awesome!!
I would like to know how much you charge for one as well.
Awesome!
Is it: APPLE? ;D
Well done, lots of work but a great video, thanks for making them for us.
This is a neat use of a lathe. I will have to try to make one eventually. Thanks for the instruction.
Thank you
JLEIL
hey Doom
It might be easier to do with separate pieces of wood, but i think this one is a lot cooler. It's like the difference between a rolex and a timex. They both tell time but made very differently. I pay more for things that are well made. ..and that's how you hide your weed from your kids..
That is exactly what I was thinking
Yeah man. Maybe the unlock word is 'SMOKE' haha.
That's so cool man Felicitaciones!!!!
Your'e professional and are very aware of the viewers time, which I can appreciate. Very cool project.
Jonathan Gorr Thank you very much Jonathan
adolf?
Wish I had the tools and materials to make this, but then again, my birthday is 10 months away...
That would be the best B-day ever!!!
This is amazing. Such skill and precision. Nice
Thank you very much!
I've been doing a bit more turning lately, so this might just be the next challenge! Thanks for sharing Carl.
Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Thank you Mitch!
If you use fast forward during some portions of your video, instead of cutting it out, your video would be much shorter.
Most wood working videos use it.
Share?
wow that's so amazing! totally gonna make one!!!!
hmm, gonna try it out sometime when i am free, even though i dont have those equipment. thanks Carl Jacobson for such a great video.
Thank you Brandon
Just by examinating the video very attentively, I know 4 letters of the word. It gives me SH_RE and I know that the only two vowels in the center are A and O so it's SHARE or SHORE.. I really think that since this is a UA-cam video, it make sense if it is SHARE!
Nicholas R.M. Yes it was share :)
+Nicholas R.M. could also be SHIRE ...u know from LOTR
Vishakha Mehta There is no I in the center..
I would be disappointed if it's not apple.
Sivos Disappointment activated! lol Sorry the code was SHARE :)
.....You're a cruel man, lol.
Sivos I thought the same thing from Da Dinci Code.
You did a very professional job showing the steps for this project. i'm a beginner, but you showed it so well, I think I can make one, maybe a few mistakes along the way, but you lined it out so well I think it's do able.
***** Thank you very much Gary
What a great project you did there. I'm gonna do three of them, one fore each of my boys. They'll love it. Thank you for sharing it with the whole world.
Charles Auger Thank you very much Charles, I'd love to see some pics when your done. thewoodshop.tv
apple
let me start by saying I like the piece, but slow down! Patience isn't just a virtue, in wood working it should be your first thought. Your tools aren't supposed to chatter and the forsner bits shouldn't be smoking like a house fire! Also putting a caliper on a spinning blank is not only impatient but dangerous. At one point your lathe almost jumped off the table.
In every single other woodworking example I'd agree. But in just this ONE, (boring a cylinder you want another cylinder to freely spin in,) I feel like the effect burning has on the wood (almost making it more plastic feeling than wood,) might actually be desirable in this ONE instance. Not that I'd ever intentionally dull any blade for any reason, just saying in this ONE instance; I would've pressed on to rather than stopping making my video to go buy a new bit. Lol
Wow! Makes me want to go build something!
Carl thanks for the great video. Thanks to you this is my take on your idea.
Thank you Dean!
Thank you Helen
A perfectly done video with a very interesting project thank you for sharing your knowledge .
Thank you very much! The word was (share)
Very nice work. Not your average wood turning. Cryptex are very cool and you make a complex piece seem simple.
Wayne Gaffney Thank you very much Wayne
Great work! Just watching some videos, one thing led to another, here I am. Very skilled craftsmanship went into that Cryptex. Amazing video
Austin6969 Thank you very much Austin
Lovely bit of craftsmanship, wish I'd paid more attention in woodwork class :)
I've had people grumble about the length of some of my videos, the solution was to put a ten-second index at the start of the video, so if someone wants to jump straight to a bit they're interested in they can see what time to scroll to. Handy if (like this one) you can't chop it down any further without losing something important.
Great job
I really enjoy watching your videos, I'm in a design school and some of your work inspire me for some of my projects.
Thanks Carl :)
Thank you that a great compliment, I'd love to see some pictures.
Take care,

Beautiful Project. Thank you. It was very nice of you to SHARE. hehe I know people got it before me but it was fun trying to figure it out.
Thanks for sharing Carl I am new to turning and I am really enjoying your videos. I have been out with the wife and the dog down the woods and came back with a nice log which I am hopefully going to use to make one of these. Please keep the videos coming as they are very useful to beginners like me.
Mark Andrews Thank you very much Mark,
The only thing I would suggest, is to make sure the wood is dry for a project like this.
Take care,
Carl
You have nice woodwork skills sir!
