    Great wood turning. You are one of the few wood turners that I have seen bore a hole for the spur drive. This is an excellent safety practice to keep wood on the lathe in the event it decides it wants to fly off. I do this regularly and it has saved me on a few occasions when the wood wants to play games. More wood turners need to learn and use this practice regularly. Thanks for showing it in your video.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      I’m so sorry to disagree with you but, that was used on this occasion to achieve full surface connection.. the wood around the spur is not for safety.
      When used correctly a spur drive between centres is one of the safest holding methods and I start even the biggest bowls in this way. There is no need to drill into a work piece to fit a drive centre and it actually takes away one of the great advantage of starting your work between centres, that is the ability to adjust and correct the alignment of the work piece as you go.

      @@JackMackWoodturning Ok. What ever you say. Whether you agree not not, it sill provides a measure of safety even if not intentionally done.

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah but it’s a false safety measure as the correct safety measures is learning to mount the wood correctly so that it will never come out.
      A fail safe for a faulty mounting method is not safe practice it is ignoring the true issue at hand.
      Woodturning has been practiced and mastered though history as far back as the ancient Egyptians, as with all wood working, we already have safe practices set. The basics require no innovation. Doing so is muddying the waters of the craft.

    Hello. I like watching your videos and the format is excellent. I was thinking that you could have made two bowls from this. Put a tenon on both ends and cut in half. Just my way of thinking :-) Well done, awesome work

    • @JackMackWoodturning
      @JackMackWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      I understand why you thing that but this style bowl actually used the top 3 points from the tenon. Rather than the bottom 3.. it’s quite difficult to get your head around I know but he basics are that a 3 pointed bowl made from a cube used the lower 2/3rds of the blank.
      Does that make sense ? 😊
