    Hey so this video was originally included as part of 'My Favorite Title Cards' but following a retroactive copyright claim which demonitized that video, I removed it but still have now uploaded it as its own video so that it is available for viewing. Currently my wife & I’s housing & work transportation situation is complicated & we are still in the middle of moving so frankly any extra money at all that we can accrue is important & in this instance something I felt I needed to prioritize. Unfortunately I don’t have any time to add anything to it as I am in the middle of working on the next video so this is exactly as it was in 'My Favorite Title Cards'.

    I love that this film captures that it’s incredible painful to go thru the process of growing up , that it’s not just about finding a job or partner/family, but deep guilt and breaking of innocence that allot of people still cling to as a form of coping

    I have a weird obsession with a particular kind of film: Films that start out funny and lighthearted before gradually becoming MUCH darker and disturbing. It seems like VERY few filmmakers even attempt to pull off this kind of storytelling, but I really wish more would. It's SUCH a unique experience.

      Same here! But I struggle to find those kind of movies, do you have any recommendations? The only ones that comes to my mind in Vengeance and this one.

    I love when people have really specific favorite movies that you wouldn’t really have thought of or seen or checked out otherwise. Yes there are big titles that are more than worthy of being praised and being people’s favorites, but it’s so satisfying to me when someone has a truly unique favorite movie that is so specific and so unique to someone’s tastes, and you check it out and it ends up being something truly special and one of a kind.

    Man, I love this movie. I'm so into funny noir and this hits just right. I feel so much for Abe as an empathetic look into the "person who peaked in high school", someone disillusioned but still lost and not moving forward because he hasn't processed his past yet. I loved seeing him solving the case that stagnated him for so long. To me, the crying at the end is a catharsis that he could not give himself when he was younger because he had to keep it together all this time. He's both mourning childhood and freeing himself from of it at long last.

    You’re slowly becoming my favourite UA-camr! Another great video man!
    I personally perceived the ending as a much more uplifting one, where after confronting his biggest failures, Abe’s able to actually express and release his built up emotions, rather than suppressing them with more alcohol and late nights.
    Keep up the great work dude!

    How did you love that ending scene. I thought it so messed up like ‘Mann he’s been through a lot' it feels like a kid who finally processing his emotions on the dramatic experience of solving the case and all the pressure on him that he failed as a kid and being stuck on the case made him be stuck as kid not growing up and facing adulthood because of and playing such an upbeat song as he cries from all of that kinda hurts me in a way like 'How dare you!' It’s mess up But I also I understand it cause it tragic comedy which i appreciate it being. overall i want to thank you for making this video cause if you hadn’t made this video i wouldn’t have seen the movie and get to experience this amazing story

    no idea if this is a complete shot in the dark but one of my own favorite dark comedies (as well as a great title card implementation) is the dirties, which the composer for kid detective also scored! and has a cameo in as a guitar teacher. it’s seriously maybe my favorite movie ever and highly underrated, a peak example of a movie starting darkly funny and just diving off a cliff into utter sadness lol

    Well, I’ve come to really appreciate your perspective and respect your taste in the past week or so of binging all of your stuff. So I jumped at a recommendation and I absolutely loved this upon my first watch. Thank you!
    I pause the video when you said to at the very top…and I’m just coming back to this now to watch your take on it after having viewed it and I’m just absolutely cracking up with the cut from the closet to the police chief for the second time. First time almost did a full on spit take all over my iPad.

    I just watched the film after the title card video. I didn’t love the movie but, I appreciate its depth and writing quality. It was funny, has nice twists and good tone. The writing is great for the movie. I still really liked it and enjoyed watching it. It really is just not well known enough I suspect. Perhaps it could become a cult classic or something in the future? But I don’t know how much of a following the movie even has to be honest.

    I genuinely believe that the Title Card is just calling him a kid. Abe, all these years has never grown up once, he's very hedonistic in a way, indulging in drugs, alcohol and still keeping up his detective charade. He's 32 and he's immature, stubborn, irresponsible and can't do a single thing by himself, even taking his free ice cream whenever he can. And now Abe's finally gotten what he wanted, he's a real detective now, he doesn't just handle kiddy cases, he solved a kidnapping and a murder in one go and his mind can't handle it at all.
    Not to say grown-ups just see a suicide and are fine after, but Abe, even in his way of crying, just feels so... childish... Not in a bad way mind you, I don't necessarily blame him for not growing up and it did end up solving a kidnapping and a murder, but yeah I think the title card is quite literally just calling him a man-child.
    But! I do think it's a pretty hopeful ending, he's probably crying for so many reasons but I genuinely believe he can come back from this and finally grow up into a real adult, both Gracie and Abe have been stuck as 14 year olds for pretty much half their lives, but now they're free of that. What chained Abe to childhood, Gracie's disappearance, is solved.
    Personally I've interpreted the movie's title in three ways:
    1) The KID DETECTIVE - A literal kid who is a detective;
    2) The KID Detective - A detective specifically for child-related cases;
    3) The Kid Detective - A detective who only handles childish cases (a la "Did Hooper train with the Mets last year?). This one's more in a pretend sort of way. A Kid Detective like a detective who's kidding around, a pretend detective of sorts.
