I unironically love the dual depictions of God from the TV show Lucifer. As cheesy as that show was, the God and Godess they presented were very interesting to me. Essentially, the cosmos' divorced parents. The Godess is agressive, indignant, self centered, and really trying to be a good mom. The God is stern, distant, imposing, and has no clue what to do anymore.
I found you randomly and so happy I did. I enjoy the sh*t out of what you're doing. Eloquent, I know, but it's true. It just makes me happy to watch. That's a rare thing, so, thank you.
When I was little, the face I ascribed to God was the emperor from Disney's Mulan. Bearded, eternally calm, wise old man. And when Mulan hugs him at the end, other characters are amazed he permitted her to do that. But again, the emperor wasn't explictly meant to be a deity character. So perhaps this reflects more on me and my own faith than it does the Disney animators.
Tally Hall demo, Megamind, Mindgame AND an Edgar Wright movie ALL IN ONE VIDEO ABOUT MEDIA INTERPRETATION??? Amazing awesome gimme 1000 of these please.
Really love these “my favorite depictions of” videos !! I’m not the most well-watched movie person (and unbothered by spoilers) so I’m definitely taking this as a recommendations list
Your editing and commentary is my favorite depictions of anything. I haven't seen all of the cool films you've talked about here, but I'll definitely be checking them out now. Thanks for sharing your favorites with us 😊
I think my favorite depiction of God is in the comic Animal Man: Deus Ex Machina. Animal Man gets to meet the writer of his comic, Grant Morrison (after traveling through a limbo-like space and losing almost everything he has - very much like Inanna’s descent into the underworld in Mesopotamian mythology). It’s a strange and sort of sad scene, since Grant Morrison only worked on Animal Man for 26 issues and Deus Ex Machina was their last storyline before they had to pass the comic on to another writer.
I recommend you check "Le tout nouveau testament" [the brand new testament], a Belgian comedy film whose opening line is "god is a jerk, and he lives in Brussels". The plot is about his daughter releasing publicly the death date of everyone. It's 100% Belgian humor so idk how well it lands for foreigners but it's definitely in my favorite Gods.
I would also add the depictions of God and the devil in the television show Preacher. which I would highly recommend to anyone. A very fun show. And of course, the graphic novel it is based on. again, great video. Looking forward to more.
My favourite rendition of God is from the comic Kill Six Billion Demons. In it, God's first act is suicide through division. They split themselves into multiple forms that in-turn divided themselves further, eventually resulting in the universe. Thus reality as we know it basically God talking to Themself.
One of my favorite depictions of god in media is… The Board, from Control. While they are never, really truly said to be “gods” they have that feeling, that air to them and with how the characters treat them at times. The design, from what we know, is simply a black triangle, ever present in some alternate reality. They lay above, watching it all, “granting” our main character Jesse abilities. Their speech is nothing more than gibberish, yet the subtitles tell you all they communicate/lie about and the… strange way they do so, some words seemingly have a double meaning (some of my favorites “words” are: “go play/exterminate” which shows how apathetic they are or “objects of power/665”, again, implications of them being gods, that the magic objects they create are angels, in some twisted sense.). It’s definitely my favorite interpretation of how god, might just talk. Then there’s also the fact that it is later implied that… god, truly is like humanity. It is corruptible, it can be… as terrible as us, casting out of their own to some abandoned recess of their plane simply because it found flaw in their scripture. It’s in the name too… The Board. Not a god-esque name, not some unnamed thing just… The Board. As ruthless and as controlling as an executive board might be, when it comes to their shares (in humanity, now). Yet we really… don’t know much. Just that they are ruthless, that they are seemingly, one of the most powerful beings to humanity, that they have been around far longer than we can comprehend, that they have power over the uncomprehensivable, I mean they have a house that lives, that shifts with impossible proportions. They have, possibly intimate access to inanimate objects with powers beyond anything, a tv that shifts reality, a shapeshifting gun, a floppy disk with telekinesis, a mind-frying x-ray machine! A phone with no buttons, to phone them and the dead. The slide projector. They may also be… indescribable, perhaps? I love the image of god just being a simple inverted pyramid. I doubt I do them justice here but they are quite frankly, one of my favorite depictions of god, in perhaps one of my favorite games, even if it isn’t the best the world they build, something else for sure. Totally recommend it, if you can just, completely immerse yourself in a story, you don’t have to play Alan Wake before any of the content, honestly makes it better if you don’t to me.
I remember really likeing the God portrayal in Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. I also really liked the "lost Berserk chapter" which has a pretty interesting depiction. Also Watchmen is a good pick.
Only God Forgives is an extremely weird movie and very hard to recommend to people, but it is very excellent. That got you subscribe right there. That and you having a whole video on Zahler which is also a great video.
22:13 it’s a bit more complicated than that. The Miracle does exist, but it’s got a “chicken or egg” relationship with the High Wills. Blasphemous 2 even happening shows that since it takes place after you kill the High Wills, but the Miracle is still acting
I'm gonna watch this video when I get a chance, but I need to gush about my favorite depiction of God from the game Ultrakill. Slight spoilers for the lore, but most of this lore is told through secrets so it won't affect a playthrough much. In the Ultrakill universe, God tried various attempts to create the perfect species, one that could do no wrong and worshiped him entirely, but no matter how powerful God was he could never remove human's freewill, and so attempt after attempt all his creations would eventually become something God had not intended for them and he would start over. After too many trials and no success, God finally broke and, in a fit of rage, created Hell and sent all his creations into it to suffer eternal torment. While he was still enraged, the angel Lucifer questioned God, asking if eternal torment was a fair punishment for those that were simply foolish. Without much thought, God threw Lucifer down into Hell as well. When God calmed down, he immensely regretted creating Hell and throwing Lucifer into it, but when he tried to unmake it, Hell had become too powerful for even God to destroy. And so, God fell into deep, deep despair and eventually left, abandoning Heaven, Hell, and everything in between. We currently don't know what happened to God when he left, but there are some implications that he is dead, either something killing him or God, deep in depression over Hell's creation, committed suicide. I love this interpretation so much because it shows God as almighty, but still a character with flaws and an ego, but still a sense of good as shown when he regrets creating Hell and tries to undo it. Also the thought that a situation becomes so hopeless that even God would resort to suicide is so terrifyingly depressing and very fitting for Ultrakill's story.
My two favorite depictions of God is from “Good Omens” and “Devil All The Tome” I want to go into detail on these two but I feel like in a part two you would be able to do a way better job if you included them. If you’re counting godlike people in Time Loops “Palm Springs” is an amazing depiction of it culminating in Andy Sambergs character using his godlike knowledge of the area around him.
A lot of these inclusions aren't depictions of God at all. If the filmmaker/writer's intent was to depict the Christian God, like in Bruce Almighty and Miracle Workers, that certainly counts. But when characters that are simply creators of things, or random superheroes, or Bill Murray from Groundhog day are included as depictions of GOD, it just seems quite misleading. If your intent with this video was to highlight cool and well-written depictions of godlike powers in media, you did a wonderful job.
It is understandable why this is so, most of His representations(in Media) are made to provoke some form of "critical" thinking and are not accurate with dogma or doctrine, the same thing with angels and demons. As it happens in Good Omens
Baldurs gate is interesting to me because it’s like all these god exist who you choose to worship or obey is dependent on your philosophy on life. But silent hill 3 is the answer
Thanks for another fun video, I've been really enjoying these. I never knew your channel from before your shift to this style but I'm selfishly glad you did! (and in also glad you always include a pancake clip) Not quite directly God, but Ishmael (from the book of the same name) is a great version who could fit this sort of video. Also Omni-Man from Invincible could work as a sort of anti-god. Maybe a good idea for a series could be the reluctant villian/sympathetic villain. Ones who in an ideal world wouldn't want to do what they do, but feel that they have to since no-one else is taking the responsibility to do so themselves. Examples would be Thanos, Magneto, Colonol Kurtz (apocalypse now version), and Adrien Veidt. A fun video for Halloween could be yourself tongue in cheek jokingly trying to play devil's advocate/dense lawyer for 'misunderstood' monsters Finally, thank you for having the courage to be your own genuine self in these videos. I admire it and wish you all the best.
Given what you've said about enjoying the "bored god" portrayal, I wonder if you'd like the character of Happy Chaos from the Guilty Gear franchise. A man who gained such complete control over magic (to the point he's the most powerful being in canon) that he went insane and who's purpose now is solely to cause drama, be it for better or worse.
The AM's don't join together, American AM 'kills' the other AM's. The whole plot of the game is to revive the other AM's so they can potentially help you save yourself and the other humans. Idk if that was just simplified speak or a mistake
Yeah I've had some trouble recording the last couple, new home is basically an echo chamber & my allergies have been brutal, hopefully the next one sounds better I'm trying a couple things that will hopefully help
Yeah, Alanis Morrisette was an interesting casting choice for the role of God. “She can rebuild you, she has the technology…..” love Alan Rickman’s delivery of that line 😂
New home is basically an echo chamber, plus my allergies have been killing me lately so this was tough to record, tried a few things to make the next one sound better hopefully it'll help!
19:40 I feel as if the what you define as god in this video and how you apply that sticker on to several very different stories might be doing them a dis-service. We jump the label being applied to Jack Sparrow (???), to Superman, and to strange entities in Bloodborne. I would much rather you dig in a little deeper on why each of the stories are choosing to depict someone or something as god. An example would be Superman, he isn't randomly chosen out just because of a fan battle. Superman and how he sides with the US government in the Dark Knight story is showing representative of how much power the state has and how it uses the power abrasively. We add the fact that Superman is generally seen as the moral compass for not just DC but for the superhero genre in general and get a sense that it is a perverted lie of justice that the government is using to justify its action that its "for the greater good". Likewise have you noticed how in many JRPGS the climatic battle is with god? Persona, Final Fantasy, even Pokemon to some degree. People even meme about it - forgetting the fact that Japan was ruled by many "god emperors" and revolting against them was seen as fighting god. That notion stays with whatever ruling power is in play. Which is why you looking at FF7 and notice that it is corporation that is filling that god like role that you can see a bigger message. ALL of that to say is that I think it would amuse you to dig into the Why of something is depicted as god. Also might not hurt to be less liberal with the "god" label lol calling Jack Sparrow a trickster is accurate, but calling him a god is stretching the understanding of the term. I understand this was mostly just a personal list lol but I just felt like having the discussion, thanks for the video!
We moved & the new place echoes really bad & my allergies are killing me rn which made this extra hard to record, I think I have it figured out though next one will sound better
The Moster did not seek to destroy Frankenstein, he wanted him to feel how he felt on the night of his creation... abandoned and alone
for most of the story at least
the next one better be 'My Favourite Depictions of Angels'
scp 001 and the guardian angel that gets summoned in dark song immediately jump to mind
aenarius from diablo as well💪🏽
oh how could i forget angels from neon genesis evangelion ofc
I absolutely did not expect a Ruler of Everything drop in that intro.
Unfathomably based and awesome
I unironically love the dual depictions of God from the TV show Lucifer. As cheesy as that show was, the God and Godess they presented were very interesting to me. Essentially, the cosmos' divorced parents.
The Godess is agressive, indignant, self centered, and really trying to be a good mom.
The God is stern, distant, imposing, and has no clue what to do anymore.
Besides the cop-drama curse TV has been getting, I'm on the same boat. Make a pantheon that is less Ancient Greek but more Hindu or Hoodoo/Voodoo!
I found you randomly and so happy I did. I enjoy the sh*t out of what you're doing. Eloquent, I know, but it's true. It just makes me happy to watch. That's a rare thing, so, thank you.
Same.
Just got this video recommended today.
Channel seems cool.
When I was little, the face I ascribed to God was the emperor from Disney's Mulan. Bearded, eternally calm, wise old man. And when Mulan hugs him at the end, other characters are amazed he permitted her to do that.

South Park. That goofy little monster-looking thing.
10/10
"What did you expect me to look like, my son?"
"Well... not like THAT!!"
We’re back!! Watching/listening from work!!!
Holy mother of quality, that intro plus music was AMAZING! I wish I could subscribe twice, everyone needs to see this!
Your editing and commentary is my favorite depictions of anything. I haven't seen all of the cool films you've talked about here, but I'll definitely be checking them out now. Thanks for sharing your favorites with us 😊
I’ve been waiting for this!!
And to complete the trilogy, favorite depictions of Death!
Death from Puss in Boots: the Last Wish should definitly be in it
Great vid as always! Frankenstein is one of my favourite books
Love finding a new favorite UA-cam channel!!
I love this series. You have such a plethora of mefia references.
I would love to hear your fave Trickster gods
I think my favorite depiction of God is in the comic Animal Man: Deus Ex Machina. Another amazing video!!! Will definitely give mind game a watch after this!

More people really need to see Angel’s Egg. Easily one of my fav films of all time.
its so ass lmao
Interesting point regarding Norse mythology, is that not only is Loki a trickster god, Odin is as well.
I just watched your other video about your favorite depiction of the devil. Seeing you upload this soon after feels funny
Pancake is so underrated with these movie commentraries but these lowkey morbid topics always give me a sense of dread
I am really enjoying your videos they are so awesome.
Only God Forgives is an extremely weird movie and very hard to recommend to people, but it is very excellent. That got you subscribe right there. That and you having a whole video on Zahler which is also a great video.
And of course, your devil videos, which is what I was first recommended by the algorithm. Thankfully. Keep up the good work. This is great stuff.
Thanks for another great video dude, give the fluffy pup some scratches for me. :) ❤
22:13 it’s a bit more complicated than that. The Miracle does exist, but it’s got a “chicken or egg” relationship with the High Wills. Blasphemous 2 even happening shows that since it takes place after you kill the High Wills, but the Miracle is still acting
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels. Thoe one thing i would suggest i a better mic :)
I always liked God from South Park - this hippo monkey bear thing who is a Buddhist who only lets Mormons into Heaven.

Next one: My favorite depictions of the human experience.
Noo you didn't talk about 'The Truth' from Fullmetal Alchemist😭 the truth is one of the best depictions of God in media
Greatest, _time to leave, because Spoilers_ I’ve ever seen and heard.
Wish I’d found the channel sooner.
If you were to do a part two, I recommend Mad God by Phil Tippet.
George Burns will always be my favorite depiction of God on the big screen. Because…it’s George Burns. Personal bias.
Great video though 👍
i am hopping around and giggling and clapping
The AM's don't join together, American AM 'kills' the other AM's. The whole plot of the game is to revive the other AM's so they can potentially help you save yourself and the other humans. Idk if that was just simplified speak or a mistake
my favorite depiction of god would have to be the alien from the annihilation movie and book
I dont know why but it seems like the audio clarity has gone a bit down since the devil depictions video
I noticed that too, don't think it makes the video any less good but it was noticeable.
Yeah I've had some trouble recording the last couple, new home is basically an echo chamber & my allergies have been brutal, hopefully the next one sounds better I'm trying a couple things that will hopefully help
There's always Dogma. Haven't watched it in ages and ofc it's dated - but I liked the depiction of God in it
Yeah, Alanis Morrisette was an interesting casting choice for the role of God. “She can rebuild you, she has the technology…..” love Alan Rickman’s delivery of that line 😂
Why the mic quality and single take? Not complaining just curious
New home is basically an echo chamber, plus my allergies have been killing me lately so this was tough to record, tried a few things to make the next one sound better hopefully it'll help!

Does The God-Emperor of Mankind count as a depiction of God?
He's a Atheist can be more accurated depiction of a Monarch
Favorite depictions of Jesus and the AntiChrist next?
HEY I ASKED FOR THAT LMFAOOOO
Hey, bro? What the fuck? How can you make the radical switch from football coverage to just pumping out excellent video essays?
No South Park?!!
Do forgotten deities/old gods
These videos aren't helping my attention span
Angels Egg is so trash 💀
