My Blood Meridian hot take is that Holden is something weirder than The Devil. He's much more willing to get his hands personally dirty than any depiction of the Devil I've seen, and it never feels like he's here to tempt people, just to revel in the sinfulness that's already here
So he's a psychic manifestation of the worst parts of The Old West and all the murder and brutality that came with it, or more broadly: The God Of Gunslingers

He isn't the devil, he is an archon of god or god himself , atleast to more gnostic readings of the text. Which do hold merit due to the many refrences to gnosticism in the book.

You ever wonder what the real judge Holden would think of everyone saying he's rhe devil and an incarnation of war.

@@a.i5233Judge Holden was never a real person, he was just a character made for the novel, in order to guide the gang in the story along the path of damnation in a way that felt more supernatural, and not just humans being cruel and making mistakes, leading to their ultimate demise.
The gang is based on a real gang however, the Glanton Gang actually existed, according to the memoirs of Samuel Chamberlain.
So the other members of the gang might be sitting in heaven/hell and asking him about their fucked up legacy, but Holden isn’t there, because he is entirely fictional.
If anything, he’s inspired by Satan, or worshippers of Satan. Keep in mind that Satan is not The Devil, that would be Lucifer.
Satan is a powerful Demon of hell, embodying the sin of Wrath, that is said to be needlessly cruel, violent, and ruthless, for no purpose other than his own amusement. He thrives in times of war and violence, when humans are more easily misguided to violence and brutality.
In summary, Satan is the Prince of Wrath, and is brutal, violent, and cruel to practically everyone he ever meets.
Lucifer is the calm and collected bargainer, the insidious voice leading you every time you do something immoral, he is the Prince of Pride, and the first to fall.
Both are immensely powerful fallen Angels, and aligned with Hell, they just have different methods of leading humanity to damnation.
Holden is much more akin to Satan than Lucifer.

I like to think that the Beast is also a depiction of depression. Since the entire thing is set in a dying dream, him convincing the kids to give up is convincing them to choose to die- thus why his victims get turned into trees. In Dante's inferno, the punishment for suicide was being turned into a tree/shrubbery and pecked endlessly by birds iirc.

Not a movie or series really, but the devil in “the devil went down to Georgia” is one of my top 5 just because he seems rational at least to the point of making a deal instead of just taking a soul and KEEPING that deal in the end. Don't know if it's of much interest but i'd like to share one of my favorite interpretations of the devil in a videogame:
Faith: The Unholy Trinity is a game made by Airdorf about a priest fighting a cult in ordee to save a girl he failed to exorcise, throught the game you get to see just how much the cult has taken control ovee the town and how wretched and evil the demons they summon are. And as the game goes on you can see the protagonist lose faith both in the benevolance of his religion and in himself.
The Devil appearance takes place during a flashback of the time the priest failed to exorcise the girl, he was terrified and started praying for someone, anyone to get him out of there.
Before him appears a being of pure light, who adresses him as "son of man" and asks him "what does thou want"
When the priest begs him to give him an escape, it mentions that the girl will be let behind, but in his desperation the priest ignores that and asks to be let out.
The being agrees to let him out IF he SWEARS to devote his life to it, it literally says "SWEAR IT", which would seem uncharacteristical for a supposedly benevolent god to do.
Many people believe this being of light wasn't god, but the devil himself tricking the protagonist into devoting himself to evil in a moment of weakness. And i just think that's insanely cool.
If you're interested this interpretation is further discussed in Wendigoon's video about the game. Which is a pretty good video about a pretty good game if you ask me :]

I like to think of Candy from Django Unchained as a Devil figure. Its never suggested he may be the devil, but his design with the goat beard, the red suit and his cigarette holder thing are all very stereotypical pop culture devil design features. Not to mention that he rules over a hellish place and is, at least on the metaphorical plane, the dragon that holds Brunhilde captive (from the tale of the german Doctor). He enjoys and/or doesnt care about the suffering of the slaves on his land, because, in his twisted mind, they deserve it. I'd argue, his character is definitely meant to represent the devil.

Loving these videos, especially as someone who also enjoys depictions of the Devil in media (vaguely gestures to my profile picture, lmao).
If you’re looking for more, I highly recommend the game We Know The Devil, a visual novel about three teenage girls at a summer camp; one night-the one the game takes place during-they have to fight a literal, actual Devil. There’s multiple endings and all of them contain some really fun stuff. It’s really good and is one of my favorite games!
Another game that has really fun depictions of the Devil and his demons is FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. It’s about a priest who, a year after failing to successfully exorcise a demon from a girl, goes back to the place of the exorcism to finish what he started. As the story goes on, he falls down an ever-deepening rabbit hole of demonic influence and mystery. The game is in the style of an old ATARI or NES game.
Wonderful videos, please keep up the amazing work!!

My favorite depiction of the devil comes from a little-known NoSleep story (yes, really) called I Met Someone Who Claimed to be the Devil, and I Think I Believe Them. It tells the story of a man who finds himself in a pub. A seemingly nice, young woman starts a conversation with him. A woman who has visibly had a very rough night. She’s looking disheveled, makeup ruined, had drinks poured out on her, poor girl’s been through a lot. She starts telling him a story, starting out as a hypothetical take on a Biblical tale but then morphs into a critique on society that leaves the man utterly disturbed. Somewhere in the story, she lets slip that it’s all a lot more autobiographical than he thought and, when she gets to the part that made those who came before him treat her the way she had been treated all night, his life would be changed forever. It’s utterly haunting as it puts a spin on the devil that we don’t get to see very often. Not an agent of chaos and evil, but a witness to it, which she would argue is worse.

Judge Holden in Blood Meridian is hands down my favorite depiction of the devil. He’s cunning, omnipresent, and embodies pure evil without a shred of humanity or redemption a walking nightmare in the American West. There’s something classic and unsettling in the way he plays the fiddle, dances, and dominates any space he’s in. McCarthy’s take feels like a deeply traditional view of the devil, but reimagined through the brutal lens of a Western. Holden isn’t just a villain; he’s more like a force of nature, and you can’t look away. Absolute masterpiece of a character.

Then the next thing you know, he has pulled what is a funny little trick to him and a traumatic life-shattering experience to his victims. He seems personally invested in some humans’ lives and benevolent toward them, yet cruel for both small and big reasons to others. You’re left feeling like under the right circumstances, you could be friends with him, but the truth is that he is only concerned with humans when he is forced to interact with them, at which point he simply plays around with them and moves on. The fact that you’re left feeling at least somewhat favorably towards the Devil by the end of the book is what makes him such a good and dangerous devil. He may be tricking the other characters in a rather simple way (give them what they want and then watch them suffer as it all comes crashing down), but he plays his most cunning trick on the reader. He makes you feel like you and him have a lot in common, like you agree on a lot of things and can have a mutual understanding and respect. These other guys are obviously morally corrupt fools, you’re not like them, so of course he would be nice to you… and maybe… you could get that thing you really want from him? Maybe he’d make an exception for you like he did for Master and Margarita? And that’s how you know you will get tricked just like everyone else.

I’m ngl I don’t remember much of The Blackcoat’s Daughter but besides the creepy song, I do remember that it is the only horror movie that has made me hurt and cry. I cried over that exorcism scene. Despite my confusion at the time over my reaction, I was absolutely loving how fresh that scene was. I’m gonna have to rewatch it again soon.

I Trapped the Devil seems like it took a lot of inspiration from the Twilight Zone's "The Howling Man," which is a really cool 20 minute episode about how some monks living out in the woods have a 'man' trapped in their cellars. You should take a look at it if you happen to see this!

Also, can't believe you've done two of these without mentioning Tim Ellis's Lucifer Morningstar, also I want to mention The Beast from the Doctor Who episodes The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. Also The Robot Devil from Futurama "You can't just have your characters announce how they're feeling! That makes me feel angry!"

I know im kinda late, but i thought I'd add one of my personal favourite versions of the Devil, that being The Beast from Doctor Who, specifically the two parter "The Impossible Planet" and "The Satan Pit".
The Beast is this impossible being, am entity that, by all accounts of the laws of existence, shouldnt exist. Its a downright magical being that uses real, actual magic, in a show that is so incredibly scientific.
Hes a true antagonist to the Doctor, the Doctor being someone who must have everything explained because he's such a stan for science, but The Beast is something that goes completely against all of his beliefs. It came from before time, weilds powers not scientifically possible, has a backstory that just shouldnt be possible yet theres evidence for it to be true, it has ties to all religions, and it has a lamguage not even the TARDIS can translate, something downright impossible.
The Beast is such an amazing antagonist in my opinion, and if youve not watched the two parter i HIGHLY recommend

My favorite depiction of the devil is Satan from Paradise Lost by John Milton. In case you don't know, Paradise Lost is essentially the traditional Genesis story from the Bible told from Satan's perspective. It's the first time the devil is ever presented as a sort of "anti-hero" and sympathetic character.

    • @raxevonapbwd8769
      @raxevonapbwd8769 4 місяці тому +4

If you view the devil in paradise lost as sympathetic you might need to reread the book. the whole point of it is how fucking stupid and stubborn he is to have any remorse for what he lost.

    • @rinkooo6006
      @rinkooo6006 4 місяці тому +4

@@raxevonapbwd8769 that’s true, he was a very flawed protagonist, he made a lot of mistakes over the course of the story because of his intense jealousy towards heaven. i mean heaven does end up winning in the end, of course, showing that yeah, satan wasn’t as great as he said he was over the course of the story

I’d personally argue that that between the two Fargo villains, Malvo is closer to being the devil (his garden of Eden comment, the wings of blood shot, the heavy use of temptation to manipulate people, him being incredibly difficult to kill, etc), whereas Varga embodies greed in a very human way with how materialistic he is, and the way that (he atleast claims) he accumulates his wealth to protect his longevity, which I doubt a devilish character would be too concerned with. Varga is also a bit more human in that he has noticeable flaws (particularly his teeth and the eating disorder) as opposed to Malvo who rarely even makes mistakes. Either way, two incredible villains

While the judge definitely has elements to his character that are references to the biblical and miltonian satan, i dont think the judge is meant to be *literally* satan; his character is more allegorical than that. I've heard others describe him as the spirit of manifest destiny and the evil at the hearts of normal men, but i do agree with you that he's intentionally left ambiguous, or that there isn't one answer. The scene with the kid's ether dream after the violent dissolution of the glanton gang really sums it up best, where he's described as having no specific origin and greater than the sum of his parts

I know ppl say the judge ultimately comes back for the kid because he bested him but personally I think that the judge only wants to leave bodies behind rather than witnesses because if you walk out of his life and continue to live yours, you do so as a new unknown entity with an unknown history and thus, without his consent. to your ultimate peril.

21:22 the whole squad was being pursued up a mountain. They had guns and bullets but no powder.
So the big bald man gathered bat feces from a cave they camped at. Then later on collected some strange smelling rocks. Later when they camped higher in the mountains, before going to sleep, he crushed up the strange rocks and bat feces, then urinated on the mixture before instructing the others to do the same.
The next morning, this weird paste he made had dried. It was gunpowder.
With it, the squad was able to confront the enemy and get away from the mountain
This is in fact how gunpowder is made, (kinda) but the process takes up to 10 months. So this whole ordeal was like a subtle nod to something not right going on

So the ending of Tales From The Hood does hinge on what Clarence Williams is doing, but you can't really say that's the only thing that makes it fun. The reactions of the three youngsters really sell the moment in a big way. "What we gonna do now, Bulldog???!!?"
