    Just a reminder, Vivian wasn't having an affair. She was happy to be finally doing things for the town again, and the banker was helping her with that. He even discovered that Dr. Johnson was stealing from the hospital. Bernard was the one who thought she was having an affair and he told Charles.

    The "affair" Vivian was having was made up by Bernard, who at that point had went fully into the obsessed stalker-mode. The banker seemed to only help Vivian with the gallery stuff and such, but Bernard was too jealous to realise that their relationship was platonic. That's what I gathered, at least

    dude the foreshadowing in this game was off the charts. i immediately realized that bernard wasn't vivan's killer because the case for the axes was broken, and why tf would he break his own case? then i noticed that there were five slots and only three axes, and if one was the murder weapon, then who had the other one? then matthew showed up at the end with the other axe! what a masterclass in environmental foreshadowing!

    This was such a good story. I was partly expecting that ending, but everything leading up to that was just... holy shit? And you have to wonder, if Sofia was having a girl instead of a boy, would things have changed for the better in some way? I, unfortunately, know way too many people who still hold onto the idea that having boys is the ~only~ means of continuing the family line. All of this death could have been avoided and I think that's why this story kept me interested the entire time. Selfishness and greed won in the end and look where it got those people. Thank you so much for playing it. I would love to see/watch more of these types of games.

      We have to consider the era this takes place in. Traditionally (and typically legally (I presume for clearer documentation's sake)), males carry the "family name". It was nigh unheard of for a man to take his wife's last name. Even rarer to hyphenate it. So while NOW, in 2022, it's old fashion and ridiculous; it's no different than getting up when the sun rises and sleeping when the sun sets. It's just what was done.

    • @DatCameraMON
      @DatCameraMON Рік тому +4

      TBF, it is still sorta true, to an extent at least.
      The family line, technically at least, does only continue as long as the family's name continues to be carried by living members. As women, typically at least, take their husband's last name the "family line" does end with them if they are the last living member and no other members had children to pass the name original family name onto.
      Obviously, that doesn't mean the family was erased from history or anything like that but it does lose meaning if no-one bears the name anymore. Considering where and when the story is implied to be set, like others have said, it is probably even less likely that a women would keep her maiden name.
      There is also the fact that people don't care as much about family name and preserving it anymore and care more if you're blood related or not rather than what their last name is. Not to say that some people still don't care about it but . . . yeah.

    {Spoilers}
    After playing this game again I can't shake off the feeling of anger and disappointment and resentment towards the action of not telling Trisha about anything. First it was Vivian and then it was Scott, someone she thought she could trust for life. The idea of losing so many people in 2 quarters of a year ALONG with someone you cherish and love is absolutely detrimental to the mental health. I don't think Trisha deserved to be avoided. Yes it's extremely disturbing news to learn that the person you're seeing a lot/are in love with happens to be related to you (half blooded or not). But it's a far better choice to be honest than to just keep someone in the dark, and think that they're just suddenly despised. All those days of wondering what the hell is going on, and why no one is talking to you, why everything is suddenly against you! Can you imagine being in Scott's shoes just hearing her crying and begging from outside the door just to understand *why*? I'd go insane honestly and I'd eventually just sputter out the truth. What the hell Scott?? She must have felt so devastatingly alone. I don't think she was pregnant I think she had completely lost all hope and security in life and didn't see any other reason to continue existing.

    Spoilers if you arent done watching!
    Man, you'd think the realisation that his actions led to his son being murdered later on would make Matthew repent but he still ended up killing the P.I and attempts to kill the player too. Yikes.
    But that last segment was beautiful from a horror aspect. Throughout the entire game, you're on, what you are led to believe, a secluded town. The music is sombre and lonely, and you see entries from past residents all talking about leaving. The atmosphere is absolutely choking and almost makes you wish for some human presence (though the only one you see till then is an apparition)
    However, when you read the final entries of the P.I, you discover that he was stalked and eventually killed by a mystery someone since he came close to figuring out the truth, which you too are close to. It plants this doubt in your mind "What if the same happens to me?" though it's an empty town so surely it wouldn't?
    You find the key and the clues the P.I left behind which lead you to the final spot where the killer concocted his plans. It's dark and dreary, the weapon is left in plain sight and there's a recording device. It's a very chilling sight, like the murders occured just the day before. Having listened to the recordings, yoou discover their identity and it all falls into pieces. However, the murderer eventually had to kill the P.I for finding out the truth. That's when the pop up appears that you can't save, you see the silhouette of a hooded man wielding an axe coming your way and realise your worst nightmares were true.

    @patchi6384 Рік тому +20

    I know that I'm super late on this one but my heart breaks for Trisha and Scott. Like they took the brunt of the consequences done by their predecessors.
    Scott had a rough childhood, growing thinking he doesn't have his true blood relatives, being bullied, learning that his mother, not only died but was killed and that you can't be with the one you love because you're related, being framed for killing someone you did not, your father not knowing anything and being mad at you, and not being able to explain things to Trisha.
    Then we have Trisha who is basically kept in the dark (intentionally and unintentionally) by the people she trusts and loves. The only mistake that she did was love someone who she legally and morally can't.
    The fact that Scott wasn't able to explain things to Trisha is really heartbreaking for me. It means she died not knowing why Scott suddenly distanced himself from her. I mean, her mind must have created multiple reasonings for it. To think that she died, believing that Scott do not care and love her anymore is just unfair.
    And all of this happened because of that stupid belief that only a son can continue the name of the family.

      exactly!!! the way the game put more emphasis on the actions and consequences of vivian and the others for what happened BOILS me lol. so many people were killed just because /one/ man didn't have the frigging spine to stand up for his wife to his own mother, and chose to "find comfort" in his young employee-while his wife was recovering from a c-section and having a mental breakdown from the news she couldn't bear another child. the mayor is so horrid and i hate that everyone (even the game, as evident in the ending's notes) seems to casually brush past that and only focuses on the others' wrongdoings.
      from what i see, these were all the consequences of the choices made by charles. the fact that he ended up alone and miserable was very much deserved. the part he wrote in his diary where he asked if losing his whole family was the punishment for his affair? the answer is a resounding YES lmao
      and honestly, sofia wasn't all that innocent too. she knew charles was a married man, yet still chose to sleep with him. she was so shameless about it too and describing it as her dreams coming true (she mentioned in her letter to matthew her dream was to not be poor when she grew up. so by managing to carry a male in her womb, she would be accepted into charles's family, thus becoming rich). she did not have a single remorse about her part in the affair and all because she wanted to be rich. she didn't even think about how it would affect anyone, it was all just about her. her death-despite being murdered-was not at all sad to me. i only feel bad for scott as he had to grow up without a mom and that's it.

She realized sofia bore the child of Charles and killed her to protect herself. Charles sucks but he’s not a monster. He didn’t kill anyone unlike so many characters in this game. It’s wild to criticize Charles’s affair more than Vivian killing Sofia which is probably what actually got everything started.

    All through out the story I couldn't help but feel sorry for Scott. The other characters suffered too, but he was born out of wedlock and had a chance to come to good money. His father was willing to take care of him and his mom (Sofia) discreetly, Magdalene would have loved him just because he was a boy. But instead, his mom was killed and her death covered up. They just threw her body into a well like some trash, leaving Scott to find it one day and bury it.
    His childhood was spent at the orphanage, then other kids bullied him to the point of throwing rocks and wounding him. His best friend stopped talking to him because of a love triangle, and then decided to keep him as the main suspect, which eventually led to his death, instead of clearing his name. The girl he fell in love with turned out to be his half-sister, and he had to cut her off without even telling her the truth. He was wrongly accused of being a murderer. He was killed based on these accusations. His relationship with his adoptive father turned strained because of all the secrets. Poor boy.
    One thing that felt a bit disconnected was Father Matthew's "confession", where he did not mention Scott at all. I expected him to at least mention his name, something like how he misses him or how he didn't deserve to die. To me it felt like Matthew cared deeply for Scott and so the fact that the game pretty much doesn't mention Scott for the rest of the gameplay from when we learnt about Bernard killing him was a bit off, like we just forgot he existed.
    One more thing, Vivian wasn't all that nice, like some people in the comments pointed out. She still conspired with the doctor and killed her mother in law, she knew about Scott, she decided to take out her anger on Sofia and never felt guilty. Next to her, Charles' affair doesn't seem like the worst thing in that family.
    Overall, I liked the game, but I do wish there were a few more intense scenes instead of just one at the end. In that sense, I prefer The Su***de of Rachel Foster, because it was a bit more creepy. The two are similar in my opinion. I liked these types of murder mystery/horror games more than the typical jumpscare ones like Outlast or 5 Nights At Freddy's.

      What great character analyses, especially in laying out the tragedy of Scott’s life altogether! Father Matthew did seem to lose depth in the end, although his narrative was also tragic. I figured he just lost his mind completely and snapped.
      And Vivian was a great example of complex character development here. Just ruthless. I also loved the touch of thoughtful supernatural without it being just ridiculous plot advances.
      Some things I giggled about were how new items were added to the journalist’s “inventoy” and how Betty White was Magdalene. 😊

      I disagree with one aspect: Charles was willing to disinherit his wife and daughter immediately for a son born from an affair. That’s not exactly the same as wanting to take care of him. Vivian likely suffered of some form of post-partum depression and when she got home from the hospital she realised that her husband had cheated with the kids nanny and his mistress now was pregnant with the son she couldn’t „deliver“ for his precious family name. It’s not really surprising that she snapped at that point. Not that I condone murder, but really there are no good guys here. Everybody‘s kinda messed up. Trisha and Scott are the only ones of the main players who truly did nothing wrong and were just completely screwed by circumstances and the bad decisions of their families and friends.

    In all of this mess, Trisha was truly the only innocent soul. She was the biggest collateral of it all, so sad for her.
    Spoilers incoming
    Everyone else pretty much made themselves some kind of guilty.
    *Scott* ,is probably the only one i can sympathize with bc he was oblivious to almost the end of it, he's guilty of not having a real talk with trisha about everything when he finally realized the truth (which was considerably before vivian was offed) but he was going through it as well so i can partially understand why he wasn't ready to talk to her yet and then the whole thing happened.
    *Andrew, Dr. Johnson* obviously trash.
    *Matthew* deserves to go to jail, because what he did was terrible and intentional. I can't say though, that i wasn't feeling with him. i do also suspect he is to blame for trishas death, he is the only one that visited trisha when she was in the hospital and he came three times. the last one was in december, maybe to inform her about scotts death. a few weeks later, the hospital rooftop was magically open. idk maybe the accident part was not planned, but i wouldnt really put it besides him to use the power of suggestion in her state.
    *Bernard* obviously also trash. The dude is an obsessive stalker, who because of his dellusions or misunderstandings just told charles that vivian had an affair, when she did not. The banker is the same as this art gallery dude that helped vivian with the art event she wanted to hold with oliver, trisha and stuff, so they were talking bussiness deals. So y'all got it all wrong, bc Vivian did not have an affair and even if she had an affair, this would have been 1994/5, so twenty years after the affair charles was having. I'm saying that bc i think there was a misunderstanding in the conclusion, i think evelyn went out of the game thinking that vivian just had an affair and that it was shortly after her husband had one with sofia and they could have just divorced. but that is not what happened. Apart from that bernard is esp trash because he offed scott!
    *Derrick* :i mean the f. this dude was the alibi for scott and he just lied, bc he wanted trisha for himself. wtf. he took away the last chance of healing and future for scott, trisha and himself.
    Coming to *Vivian* :She is guilty and shitty that's for sure. Sofia's death was accidental, but magdalenas was intentional. However i also think she is a victim. what they have done to her, the way she was treated, was so unbelievably nasty and disgusting, that whilst i think she deserved big jail time, i still can't see her as a villain. She marries charles, shortly after her vile mother in law demands an heir, male of course bc she's a sexist (as if her daughter in law wasn't the evidence of a competent, successful, and passionate businesswoman, as if vivian wasn't the one that not only carried the roberts company success which she rebuilt from the ground after the accident but also carried her husbands political career on her back), so she gets pregnant. has a miscarriage (first trauma), has a healthy daughter which should be something great but second trauma bc no doubt the mom in law was chewing her out for not having a son (as if you can influence it like in the sims with eating three apples), then she had to be operated bc of a complication after the pregnancy (that is bodily trauma), which resulted in her not being able to have kids anymore (biggest trauma). just think this in of itself would cause a depression, which she had and had to be treated for. she would feel sad, desperate, guilty her world destroyed, as if she failed as woman, wife and mother as if she's defective. Now, what could make this already shitty situation even worse? Exactly a mother in law, that wanted a grandson apparently doesn't like her granddaughter or thinks she is worth it, didn't get one and will never get one, bc the wife is not able to have kids and therefore a male heir anymore. And you just know that this woman was one of those that caused vivian to feel like something defective. and i mean the minute the male heir was there, she literally just said that they can get on the family register, charles changed his whole testament to his son. it was as if his first and "real" family wasn't there anymore. wife and daughter both worthless. so can you really blame vivian for being furious, feeling threatened and anxious about the male heir thing, when she was basically conditioned into caring for that? and i mean was she wrong about the fear of them wanting to replace her? also nope, as one of the first things charles did, is to change the testament and documents only considering his on. But wait the trauma doesn't end there for her. What happened when she was in treatment for her depression?
    Exactly her nasty husband *Charles* started an affair with a newly hired maid that also was taking her of his newborn daughter, and then impregnated her. what kind of scum can you be? this dude marries and not even like 2-4 years later, the daughter at most one year old, he *cheats* whilst his wife is treated because of severe depression bc she cant have kids anymore etc. and this asshole instead of supporting her, begins an affair with not only an employee but with the maid that takes care of this newborn daughter he had!! And then as the cherry on top he has a child with her which then to make the irony complete, is a boy. and in all this time whilst vivian is being treated, is feeling alone, unloved, worthless etc. he is not there for her, the staff is being made to accomplices regarding the affair. with dorothy taking the cake of taking fully care of pregnant sofia whilst vivian is rotting. i think it's responsible and good that sofia is being taken care of but you know the only reason is because she carries the son. plus again whilst they "take responsibility" after the affair for sofia, they don't for vivian. I'm honestly so gutted how charles could have treated his wife like this and everyone else was happily enabling it. instead of supporting his wife in this difficult times, he gets this whole shit going. Instead of supporting her from the outside bc she isn't ready to see him (yet), sending letters, sending flowers, taking care of his daughter and most importantly standing up for his family against his mother, he does all of the things i said above and then without trying, has given up on their marriage. vivian should have confronted charles not sofia.
    *Sofia* is shitty, but what happened to her was so tragic and sad, it was an accident but still vivian directed her anger towards the wrong person. i get that of course she didn't want to leave because she rebuilt the company from the grounds, it was her effort that got this success after the accident , not charles or madgalenas. Plus she is through marriage part of the family and apparently wanted to hold onto that because of stupid pride. So of course she didn't want to be the one to leave, just so "the mistress can take over only bc of the son". still of course, she deserved jail for madgalena and the accident of sofia like the rest of them deserved for their crimes. however yeah you can't tell me that charles was not a villain, only a victim that commited a spur of the moment mistake. if all those ppl are hold accountable, he can't be the only one whose action is then trivialized as some mistake, as if he's an unassuming, passive party in this (which literally only can be said about trisha). i mean karma came through but why through those innocent kids suffering? couldn't just he have "suffered" without any of this happening to sofia, and co. if you think about it, charles never took responsibility for anything. not for his marriage, not for his family, not for himself, not for his affair, not for his illegitimate child. when sofia was gone, he never really tried to find her. it's like he replaces vivian and trisha for sofia and vincent and when sofia was gone suddenly, he's like "oh well, back to first family" and doesn't even need to take care of the mess he created, bc sofia magically took her son and disappeared. like scott said, i pity the ignorant.

    Ok, I’m confused about 1 thing. [Spoilers] If Charles (dad) never knew that Scott was actually his son, where was all the money coming from? We assumed it was from Charles, but now I’m think it was the embezzled funds from the Dr?

      I've given it a thought and if I recall it was said that Matthew visited and brought the money after he became the pastor so likely he would have known Scott was Sophia's son by then and wanted him to have nice things until he was able to adopt him from the orphanage.

      I assume it was Father Matthew paying out of his own pocket. It was mentioned that it was only small amounts of money at a time, and obviously he was very close to Sofia so it makes sense he'd be looking out for her son.

      I'm not sure if Charles knew that Vincent/Scott ended up in the orphanage? If not, it was Dr. Johnson/the embezzled funds.

      @squiggedpig Рік тому +16

      I think it was that Charles was giving the money to Matthew for “Vincent” without knowing that Vincent=Scott. Since Matthew was giving the money for him, he knew the truth. That’s also why he didn’t want Scott to date Trisha because he already knew they were related.

Once I've finished the game I'm going to come back and watch you play it to see how you go! I'm so excited! If there are anymore games out there like this let me know! It's so fun!

    It’s so disgusting that Charles cheated while his wife was _recovering from a miscarriage/finding out she could no longer bear children_ in the hospital (and that Sofia was also willing to cheat with him knowing the whole situation)- some people are truly demonic. And because he was so ‘lonely’, as if practising self control by being loyal to the person you actually swore your loyalty to isn’t a valuable quality to invest in. To think that all of this could’ve been avoided if he even tried to keep it in his pants. He & Sofia reaped exactly what they sowed, and Charles acting like he’s surprised the affair irreparably damaged their relationship? What do cheaters _think?_ …That’s right, they’re not using their brains they’re using their genitals.
    I hate that people like that really exist too, we actually have to share the world with them.
    I also find it ironic this ‘noble’ man of God turns so easily into serial killer, while not blaming the man actually responsible for putting her in that position by having an affair with and impregnating her. I think it all goes to show how ruled by their passions men are.
    PSA: Even if you’re married, just end the relationship before starting a new one. Dealing with the fallout of an affair when you could just do it right and *not* betray the person you at least once claimed to love, is easier than going through just a breakup or a divorce _without_ the added drama, I assure you. If you’re *thinking of cheating,* you’re not with the right person, and a person willing to cheat on someone _with you,_ will happily _cheat on you_ with someone else when your back is turned. People are showing you who they are through their actions, pay attention; no loyalty amongst thieves or cheaters.

      Eh....I mean stress and depression makes you do REALLY REALLY idiotic things that you'd never consider otherwise. Just seeing it from a real world point of view. I know first hand that I'm not one for suicide or self-harm. I find it utterly ridiculous on my part. However, when my depression and the stress of my job (source of my depression) really started to suffocate me, it has crossed my mind more times than I'd like to admit. And my job wasn't one that I could simply quit. I was bound by contract.
      Hell, there's times where I had a fleeting morbid curiosity of imagining what it would be like to run headlong into someone else's car many times. I know it'll hurt a ton. And I know it may possibly kill or cripple the other person for life. That's the logical side of the brain. The illogical side of the brain is the one that says "Wanna find out for sure?". I immediately dismiss the idea as ridiculous but the thought was still occurred.
      It's extremely easy to say "I/You should have had better control". Especially when you're not placed in that situation as an outsider looking in. While it is ironic that a priest becomes a serial killer, I have no idea where the notion that priests aren't people too came from. They experience the same shortcomings as everyone else. To become a religious person is to admit you're not perfect. That you need help. Just saying.

      @@FallenAngelHiroko ..And what is my point of view, lol? We’re all responsible for our decisions, and pretending we are _ever_ outside of our own control is a cop-out. Every moment you are making choices, but some choose to make excuses as well, which means they split up their attention between the two and instead of devoting themselves completely to making deliberate decisions that enable them to take pride in the person they are choosing to be, they choose to devote half or less of themselves to that and then the rest to thinking up reasons or blaming something out in the world for why they aren’t being their best self.
      Of course not taking good care of yourself and burning your wick at both ends would lead to thoughts of further abuse about yourself, if you think of your thoughts or actions as a path you’re choosing, paths lead somewhere, usually to similar but more emphasised thoughts and actions. Even when circumstances are harsh and undesirable, we have to take responsibility both for having gotten ourselves into them, and for finding the way out that is best and most agreeable to us. Sometimes work stresses you out but quitting and being without a job would be even more stressful, so you’ve made the choice that you know is best for you in that moment.

      @@FallenAngelHiroko Lol, no.
      This is like "everything is excusable: the comment". As if every person who experiences something difficult is likely do to something horrible.
      People who experience the tragic loss of a child aren't likely to become murderers. Depressed and suicidal, sure. Killers? Nuh uh.
      The story in this game is so clearly exaggerated in tragedy, treachery and deceit that treating the extreme actions some characters take as normal or expected, in any way, is ludicrous.
      Edit: except for cheating, of course. Because it's incredibly common and equally disgusting and pathetic across the board.
