As the voice of Dail (as well as the King, Beeves and one or two others) and as someone who's been a fan of Vinesauce for over a decade it is incredibly humbling to hear Vinny go "wait is that the old voice actor of Link???"

I like that Arzette, unlike the CD-I Link and Zelda, is portrayed as constantly a little irritated and inpatient with the fact that she has to be the one putting up with CDI universe bullshit. She escalates IMMEDIATELY into threatening that mayor that was jerking her around.

I have absolutely no idea how the Dev managed to track down the voice actors for Link and Zelda, but I applaud them.
Not sure about Zelda, but I heard on Reddit that Link's voice actor is a professor in Quebec now.

It's sort of more like a warning rather than a threat.
The reason the CDI controller was so bad is because it wasn't meant to for video games. The CDI was designed for video and educational programs. There's another CDI remote for video games.

There's two game controllers, a 3-button one styled after the Genesis and a 4 button one that iirc is an OEM'd Gravis Gamepad for PCs (which is actually a really good controller). AVGN mocked this one for having the stick in the middle of the D-pad, not knowing you can unscrew it.
I love that there's not a single trace of irony in this game. You can feel the love for the source material at every turn.
I think is a nice plot twist how instead of doing some gormless voice Vinny is the most refined character in the game. And this game looks like a ton of fun to play, which is something no one could ever have said about Zelda CDI

You know, it's funny. Some terrible games for a forgotten console laid dormant for many years. Then one day, youths with editing software and a surreal sense of humor got their hands on their cutscenes... And then suddenly an insignificant footnote of gaming history became the center of the internet's attention. Those terrible CD-i games, in defiance of all logic and reason, have transcended into something _more._ Something that, to varying extents, has helped shape us into who we are today.
Such a specific chain of events makes me think of the Butterfly Effect. A seemingly insignificant event having enduring effects that nobody could have possibly predicted. Something to think about when you're working on a project yourself; Even if there's no immediate reaction, even if you never become known for it, your work _can_ make an impact on the world.
I think the best part about all this is that they actually got some of the people who voiced the characters and animated the scenes back to make the game, and from what I've seen so far they looked like they were having a blast. It's a shame they weren't able to get everybody, but bringing in soundalikes and people like Vinny help to accommodate for that.
We need wholesome stuff like this in gaming more often.
It does feel like we're the alternate timeline in which CDI games got popular.
Makes me think about how many other pieces of media are just...out there. Completely forgotten and abandoned. Games that could have a profound impact on what you put out into the world, movies that could change your life if you could just find out about them. Music that would inspire you beyond anything you've ever known! If you could just discover that it even exists. Quality aside, the CD-I games inspired a generation of people and completely altered the trajectory of some of their lives.
If anything, this just makes me wonder what garbage that came out in 2020 is going to become memes for kids 20 years from now.
Its not just any garbage that people obsess over - nobody ever remembers the third zelda cdi game, even tho its also bad. I think those two games in particular hit the sweet spot between good and bad that people cant easily rate on a 10-point IGN scale. It has to be compelling, have potential. I saw it with Sonic 06 - people kept saying that Sonic boom rise of lyric is just as terrible, but literally nobody cares about it - we have Project06, but no ProjectBoom. So i think its really interesting how some things just put a hook in ya no matter how bad they are.

They even put that character front and center on the thumbnail. "That could be any frog" Bro is just pulling some japes.

I love how the game is so honest and genuine in its worlds and characters. It doesn't crap on the original CDI games, but instead build off of those games genuinely

This game gets the "tone" and feel of the game so well with those cutscenes. I love how in one part is really well animated with several more frames than usual. The awkward dialogue and pacing is like they got it down to a science with how convincing some of it is
The creator was born with a curse: a genuine affection for the CD-i Zelda games. Rather than suffer in silence, he instead turned this curse into a blessing, for only his purity of heart could forge a true successor.
In all seriousness, Arzette only works because he genuinely likes two games that virtually everyone else hated. If anyone else had attempted this project, then it would have just been a shallow parody. He personally gave us more YTP material, and in turn, he got us all thinking about the actual good qualities those games had. Good qualities like the music, the painted backgrounds, the sprites, even a lot of the gameplay ideas weren't actually bad.
The way Arzette acts around the characters, its like shes a normal person trapped in a cdi game

Disagree. I think she captures the essence of someone who grew up in this world and is used to the craziness, but is otherwise a normal person. When something particularly annoying, uncomfortable, or scary happens, she reacts more strongly, but most of the time she's fairly at home in this world since she grew up in it.
@@theuncalledfor Yeah you right. Just making fun of the fact they didn’t do marvel dialogue. The voice actress does a wonderful job as well as the director for giving them proper instructions for cadence while sounding natural.
Dail also feels like a normal, albeit goofy, person to me, but he took the route of "Screw this, I'm staying in the castle"

I adore the fact that this isn’t just a meme game spoofing the old train wrecks. It’s a genuinely well made game on its own, while emulating the style of the old games to a T. It’s like a peek into a timeline where the CDI games were well made and were looked back on with the same fondness as Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time.
If you think about it, it's actually heartwarming. He saw good qualities in those games that had been overlooked, and he even brought back original crew members for another chance in game development.

I hope Dopply considers a sequel where Dail is the protagonist, to mirror the other Zelda CDI game where, in a surprise turn for the time it came out, Zelda was the primary protagonist of Wand of Gamelon.

@@absentcoder4552 Maybe, that could be cool, but I'm also kind of a sucker for a zero to hero story. It feels like we'd be in for more protagonist character development if the lazy, wisecracking Dail who doesn't want to do anything dangerous has to save Arzette and maybe Wogram, maybe we could get flashbacks or some other insight as to why Dail was one of the two heroes who stopped Daimur the first time, maybe he's always had some courage in him and he just needs to remind himself how to step up to the call of duty and adventure. In most of Arzette's npc interactions, she's happy to help and raring to go, it might be neat to see a character that starts a game as "Do I have to fight? I want to play my lute and sit in my hammock!" to "I will vanquish you foul evil!" by the end.
Minor spoilers I suppose, but there is a secret end credits cutscene for 100% that suggests there is another evil in Faramore and that a sequel is possible.
I really grew to like dail a lot but then i do love foppish cowardly characters, and dail is like a merge of cdi link and linebeck
@@KOTEBANAROT What I'm saying. I love how the characters in this game have some good lines and defined personality. Not only would it be a good homage to the second Zelda CDI game, but keeping with the character's personality it'd be neat to see Dail earn his right to be the hero of the next adventure. I feel like cutscenes would be really interesting from a character development standpoint, especially if there was a shift of him being more like Dail at the start of the game, to more brave and heroic like Arzette by the time he has to stop the evil bad person (Of course by then he'd be all suped up with power ups and stuff.). Maybe give him the wisecracking hero type thing where he'll bravely fight evil, but always have witty wisecracks to throw at them too.
i'm actually most impressed by the music and sidescrolling segments rather than the cutscenes. They're really faithful!

I'll say, I appreciate that Vinny's lines weren't his typical exaggerations. The fact that he can downplay the role is a good sign if he ever wants to pursue voice acting seriously.

There's something about the cutscene at 17:28 that has a unique charm to it unlike all the others. It looks so off compared to the other ones I've seen because it seems to be 3D animated and then drawn over. It kind of reminds me of Worthikids' animations, though I couldn't find any confirmation that they were involved with this game.
It’s a pretty common technique. I also noticed how jerky the animations were. Begs the question why they couldn’t just get a video of their friends acting it out to rotoscope.
I don't want to be mean, they clearly put a TON of love into this, but that cutscene looks hideous compared to the others imo. The scene where she's talking to the wolfman and other NPCs is perfect but why the weird shift in style?
@@munkledinks8732 That was the scene I animated (alongside the previous beacon lighting scene). The reason it looks like hot dogshit is because I'm not an animator and had no fucking clue what I was doing. I did my best to imitate the original CD-i movement and framing style with simple 3D models, then rotoscoped the key frames & filled in the in-betweens afterwards. I have no real animation equipment, so I did it all using a mouse & a 2011 version of GIMP. All in all it took me a literal 100+ hours for that one shitty little cutscene.

I think they should have kept with the more stilted CGI look since it still feels 2D when in motion. The camera flying all over the place makes it interesting IMO. Funny how what some consider the worst cutscene in the game is my favorite lol
Every animated scene is amazing and perfect.
It naiks the Zelda CDI look and feel perfectly, right down to the morphing faces, while also making it look appealing somehow.
I came here for laughs but I finding this game unironically charming and I can’t believe it. I know it’s lovingly crafted to reference the source material but something about this kind of fantasy atheistic is something I would love to see more things like this. I say this though knowing things like this are a rare product of dedication.
Honestly i always enjoyed zelda cdi and the cartoon a lot because of their fun, light hearted stories. Its a far cry from how far up their ass mainline zelda games can me (i can say this btw i played literally every zelda game)

The Byzantines had hand grenades in the 8th century, speeded along by their presence in the Near East, which had recently introduced fireworks from China. Byzantines also had flamethrowers.
I've also heard that plate armor only became a thing in the first place because they needed something strong enough to protect them from guns in particular.
@@stevethepocket Not entirely true, but the development of guns definitely sped-up armor development (and eventually invalidated armor as a whole). Full plate armor was an improvement to the coat-of-plates, and had more to do with advancements in metallurgy and craftsmanship, already becoming common before mass adoption of firearms. Though fun fact, some armor-smiths would shoot a "proof bullet" at a breastplate they made and put it on display.

The small things for this game have blown me away. half the time i was geeking out at my screen, my favorite bit being the Green Gems are worth 5 and the red ones are worth 1. just like in the CDI games.
I actually had no idea Vinny voiced the frog guy. Crazy to hear but once he said it you can tell. Dude’s got range.

I think what's funny about the corrupt duke image is that he's on his hands and knees on the floor, and he's been sentenced to hard labor. This implies that he's scrubbing all the floors in the kingdom. Then when you actually start the game, sure enough, "Ten *years* of scrubbing floors!"

I've been watching Zelda-CDi ytps for over a decade, now. Seeing this game's animated and voice-acted sequences feels like I've stepped into another dimension where Instead of The two CDi-Zelda games we got this instead. It feels so WEIRD.

Know what’s hilarious. The game actually gives you a way to deal with that exact thing. You get a magic shield (infinite use) that blocks all projectiles. You just can’t jump while using it, and you move slower.

I think the story behind the CD-i spoon controller is that it was initially designed to just be a remote. The CD-i was a media player first and foremost.
The quality of the recreation of the cdi aesthetics is truly brilliant, what an incredible project.

If this games goes well, Imagine still having the sequel featuring Link's equivalent, or seeing a direct spiritual successor to Hotel Mario and one of IM Meen's games.
I would kill to see I.M. Meen himself grace us with his presence. Truly a deep and misunderstood character with a lot of hidden depth.

My favorite part of this whole thing is that they got the original VA's of both Link and Zelda from the original CDI games involved! That's honestly incredible. I also enjoyed Vinny's role as the frog very much. "FINE DINING!"
Dopply...now thats a name I haven't heard in a long time. He was one of the mods on YouChew the UA-camPoop forum so how appropriate he's the one behind this
I’ve been fascinated by this game since it was announced. Definitely picking it up some time this year.
