Every flea obsessed bassists I have had a chance to work with has been sloppy and annoying because they base their playing off a very average bassist.

Because time and time again most of them prove that they are the most useless person in the band (most not all) by not knowing their parts, not writing their parts, not knowing how to tune their instruments and last but not least being too cheap to know what new bass strings look like (one of my friends was all of these; guitar player wrote and recorded his parts, tuned the bass and when a string broke my friend would just switch the strings tuning pegs to avoid getting new strings)

Guy signs up for bass lessons. First lesson the instructor teaches him how to hold his bass the right way. Takes some time but they eventually get there. Second lesson they progress to play the E-note. The guy has some difficulties here too, but manages to successfully play three consecutive full notes by the end of the lesson. Third lesson, the bassist never shows up. Fourth, fifth, sixth lesson still a no show. Instructor figures he got bored and stopped playing.
Skip six months, instructor sees the man on the street and says "Hey, I guess you didn't like the bass that much" to which the guy responds "Yea sorry I skipped the lessons, I got in a band and we've been touring for the past six months non-stop!"
