I typically don’t call out creators but “Feminist Kitty” on TikTok calls herself a “Certified Feline Nutritionist”. It is my understanding that her credentials include a $1,500 online course in pet nutrition. Now my question is, does that make her an expert? Absolutely not! Board Certified Nutritionist’s take extensive additional training to specialize in nutrition. And they’re also practicing Vets. Taking an online course for six months doesn’t make you an expert!

@@kinglinus3708 You know what’s funny is I found her page cause it randomly came up on my FYP one day. I made a comment and asked her what her qualifications were and she immediately blocked me. Now that’s a huge red flag! 🚩 I only know about her qualifications because there’s so many stitched videos on TikTok about her. A professional should never be offended if you ask them for their qualifications. I follow a couple Vet pages and they happily share their qualifications with their followers. And like Glen he tells us his experience. That’s why we’re here cause we want to learn more about pet nutrition!

It is dangerous to listen to her imo. She tells her followers that therapeutic diets are gimmicky and that you can just feed your cat a diet high in protein and that will solve your cats urinary issues. I feel so badly for anyone who believes her. Struvite crystals are no joke and should be treated by a Vet. This is not up for a debate as far as I’m concerned. A blockage can kill your cat within hours.

hi mr, i was one of those that followed these so called pet nutritionists, tried everything from raw to kibble and everything inbetween but always going by ingredients for my nearly 3 years old border terrier and not looking at nutrients
she was being sick maybe 2to3 times per week, soft poops and didnt clean her bowl
found your channel and liked what i heard and decided to try hills i/d digestive care, voala, been 5 weeks now and no sickness no soft poops and cleans her bowl every time
not a long time i grant you but its the longest shes ever went on a food that didnt have any negative effects
can only feed the dog in front of you and what works for it and hills has been the best up to now so thank you and keep the vids coming, cheers

What’s your thoughts on individuals who take veterinary CE courses? I was considering offering services (still debating) but I do have an associates degree in animal science and I’ve taken the NAVC nutrition course, AAHA nutrition course and as many of the big 5 courses as I could get access to. I’m absolutely not trying to give misinformation, I’m trying to do science based info and to educate owners to the science behind the big 5.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  29 днів тому

I think CE is great. And even credentialed specialists will differ on certain things though they are all science based, especially with therapeutic nutrition. Hills has a very different approach to urinary diets than Purina and RC, though they all are science based. Sounds like you’re doing great!

I never believed how strong the marketing was until I got pulled into one of these boutique brands. I ignored my vet who recommended 2 of the big three brands. I was sure he was in the pocket of big kibble. I ignored my wife who is in the human medical field. 14 months later my sweet puppy Cockapoo was searching and eating old dog poop. His food drive was over the top. Humbly I went back to my vet and was told my dog wasn’t meeting his nutritional needs. I’ve chosen to switch him to one of the big 3. Can you please review Carna 4 sprouted grain topper? I am using it as a supplement for my senior dog. I was told it would help with his gut.

    Just some constructive feedback:
A lot of people dive into the video & channel description for these sorts of videos, just to see if the person talking has the qualifications to speak on the subject. It's sort of a way to quickly determine if the video is worth the time. So, it might be worth listing your qualifications in your video & channel description (degrees, past employment, etc), just so anyone sceptical can quickly look & see that you know what you're talking about.
For videos, you can actually set up default descriptions, so you don't have to type it out manually every time -- It'll just be there.
Adding links to sources in the description also helps a lot. It shows how well-researched each video is, and allows users to dive deeper & make up their own minds.
Anyway, it's refreshing to have an opposing viewpoint in this debate that is often dominated by one side online, so I hope your channel continues to gain traction.

@@PetFoodPuzzleGuy Not a problem at all! I have a cat who was just diagnosed with kidney disease, so all this discourse around food can be super confusing & stressful to a layman who just want to do right by their pet, so you're offering a valuable service here.
For me, I always like it when an educational channel operates by "university rules" where it's not just about giving the right answer, but showing why that answer is correct with citations.
One subject that could be interesting to cover is the idea of conflict of interests in pet food studies. Namely, that most of the studies I've found (so far) have usually been funded by or were conducted by people who work for pet food companies (Mars, Hills, Renal, etc). I've seen this used as an argument for why those studies shouldn't be trusted, so I'd be curious to see your take on that. I can definitely understand seeming valid from the point of view of valuing independent, unbiased verification for findings & the incentives for the studies to show their product in a positive light, but again, I'm not exactly in a position to judge the nuances of that issue, so that feels like a meaty subject worth covering.

@@TheMemeRepository sorry about your cat. Hopefully early stages. I have a video on Feline kd. There are a few options from the vet but I do believe, for various reasons, the Hills renal diets are the best. Key now is getting enough calories and reducing workload on the kidneys…. Controlled protein, restricted minerals, and moisture.
