  • So here's part 2 of my response to Dr Judy's interview with founder and owner of Medicus Vet Diets, Dr. Chris. it really helps to understand why they have such a low opinion of therapeutic diets from Hills Prescription Diets and Royal Canine and Purina Veterinary Diets. they simply never kept up with nutrition science! Now I understand their attitude!

    Another great topic! Thank you for all you do to educate people! You might find interesting, I was guilted into feeding a raw pre-mix food that was just so magically great, you know. Well. Explosive diarrhea randomly (I have 4 little dogs), and in my 2 senior girls, they had concerning UA results . One with blood in her urine (but no RBC/WBC or crystals), and the other with protein in hers. I told the vet let me put them on just hills wet/dry small/mini and retest in 2 weeks. Retest showed both girls had normal urine again!
    Also no more explosive diarrhea (oh lord that’s a thing to clean up after!!).
    I was told it’s so full of fillers but I think that is the long-time internet education from those to pretend to know better.

Yes I handled the meat properly, yes I cleaned tools and surfaces. I’ve had many dogs for many years. Once transitioned into hills they have had zero stomach issues. Works for me!

    I don't know what is goofy about hydrolyzed diets, they are an excellent innovation and even used for humans (infants with milk protein allergies). I have fed Royal Canin Anallergenic aka Ultamino to my late cat who had severe allergies and did not improve on HP. It worked beautifully and was the only thing that completely relieved his symptoms.
    I don't have respect for a company that trash talks other companies. Dr. Chris had every opportunity to highlight how her diets work and how they help pets, but she had to say inaccurate negative things about the big companies; I don't see Hill's, Purina, or RC doing that. I actually admire Hill's slogan "science did that" because it's true and doesn't necessitate the bashing of the competition.

    So to wrap up our 4-5 month nightmare of troubleshooting our dog's food allergy reaction, we ended up with her on a 50/50 kibble mix of Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach(SALMON ONLY) & Farmina Cod/Spelt. Awhile ago we had tried the z/d for 3-4 weeks without resolution of her itching. But at the same time, our vet thought she had contracted mites, so had her on 4 doses of ivermectin, and he suggested that specific Pro Plan due to good results from other clients. She's back to her healthy self and growing back all the hair she scratched off. Was it the mites/ivermectin/Pro Plan combo that made the z/d look like it wasn't working? Well, we plan on re-introducing the z/d VERY, VERY slowly, to see if she reacts to it. And we ended up doing the 50/50 Pro Plan & Farmina, because once we got her on 100% Farmina, her poops weren't as good as when she was on 100% Pro Plan. And the reason why we wanted to try the 100% Farmina, is because it was a bit lower in calcium/phosphorus than the Pro Plan Sorry for the long-winded update, but hopefully someone else out there can benefit from our journey.

    I have become a bit disillusioned with Pet Nutritionists over this type of thing. I have Celiac Disease so cannot feed my dog any food with wheat, barley and rye, or brewers yeast. My vet tells me not to feed any grain free dog foods due to DCM, and he makes me feel like I am an abuser if I don't feed commercial dog food. So I did some research and found that UC Davis has done many studies on home made dog food. They said that most recipes were deficient in nutrients, but there are a couple of home made diets that have been found to be good. So I asked one of their nutritionists. It turns out that they sell the diets along with a supplement they have developed, but that the supplement was not gluten free for someone with Celiac Disease. They refused to give or sell me the diets that they found to have the proper nutrition so I was out of luck. I did try a gluten free dog food, but he had a serious allergic reaction. So I did the best research I could, and feed him homemade food. Not because I want to, but I don't know what else to do.

      Asking because ingredients tend to vary based on where you live. In the US, Royal Canin uses corn and in Europe they use wheat for the same product. If youu go to Asia, you will see a lot more rice-based annd millet-based kibbles. And in Russia, dogs are fed buckwheat or oatmeal.

      if you can afford it, you can try a prescription hydrolyzed diet from RC, Hill's or Purina Pro Plan. If you explain your situation to your vet, they might give you a prescription for one of these diets (even if your dog doesn't really have an allergy). It's not unheard of that pet owners with celiac disease resort to this method. You don't have to worry about cross contamination because these diets are made with extremely strict quality control and are tested for contamination.

    So why don't you have some kind of video with Dr. Becker, or Dr. Morgan and discuss 1 topic at a time like food, whole food, and medical diets. You scoff when we learn that vets don't have a lot of education in the nutritional health of the animals they look after. With the very wide variety of pets we now have and so many vets are unable to know about the care each one needs, when vets turn away an animal such as a pig, or gerble because they have never had that experience before where do we go for help? A veterinary is an animal doctor, not a 1 o2 or 3 specie vet.

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  11 днів тому +1

      Well, this really shouldn’t be a debate where the person who debates best wins. Most of this isn’t debatable really. The fact prescription diets have been tested long term and have successfully been fed long term to now a few generations of dogs and cats… that leaves little for debate. Why should we debate over hydrolyzed proteins when the technology has proven to improve and even save the lives of thousands of pets? We should debate that and call them kookie? The fact is these two doctors rejected nutrition science for some reason and have. It looked at it again in 30 years or so. That is clear in the fact they still believe there’s diets just for structure and diets just for oxalates. That is so eye opening to me. I can understand your frustration that most clinics are canine and feline and large animal clinics are becoming rare. I had a Guinea pig with a uti and knew of only one vet who was familiar and qualified to work on her. Most clinics in an area know the clinics with exotic animal expertise. It’s a personal thing among vets. I think it’s unfair to expect them to know every animal.

    • @susanbedard2295
      @susanbedard2295 10 днів тому

      Not a debate, just an exchange of thoughts about "prescription diets". Perhaps I would call it an exchange of points of view. Because I think you should be able to question their beliefs or points of view and they can do the same. They both have been vets just plain vets before this thought of "holistic vets " popped up. You I believe were selling the packaged bags from the company or companies you represented. Perhaps you both could have a better understanding of each other. Give one another a chance to speak on some subjects that would help us everyday pet parents why you are so far apart.

      @susanbedard2295 10 днів тому

      So you surmised that not 1 of them would do it. Naturally there would be boundaries. Perhaps like 5-10 mins. each just to get on track as to what subjects would be discussed. Would be interesting to have a reply from them, NO? Can't be any worse than the election debates. Perhaps we can all ask for a bit of respect for each corner you find yourselves in. We never know! There might be a better understanding as well as perhaps a concensus of what if anything could be worked on together to help the pets as well as the pet parents. It all starts with COMMUNICATION and well RESPECT, something we don't see tooo much of in ant election debate.
