"Going to the Orange Julius stand at three mall every day for the last 4th months in hopes she'll like you back" the way you know so much about my childhood is insane.
Hahaha-- swap out Orange Julius with the Second Cup coffee shop & he's nailed MY youth too! 🦃🤣🦃🤣🦃
Orange julius AnW burgers and dairy queen back in every mall miss those days
Pleasantly surprised to see you give props to 1975's first album! Absolute pop rock bangers from start to finish. They got more and more self-indulgent and pretentious though (which makes sense as the singer appears to be a disturbed egomaniac) - but their latest album is a bit of a return to their first album's more straight-forward form, would recommend a listen if you haven't already 👍
I thought their 2nd and 3rd albums were incredible and liked that bloated 4th album too
yeah defo agree, new album is a return to that debut sound and god i'd say that album is just as good as the debut
Best Music Video ✅
Very understandable ✅
Very epic music ✅
No bad words ✅
No inappropriate images ✅
This was my uncles favorite video, RIP Dale I love you
I greatly appreciate the 1975 mention, I also think that album is 10/10, especially when you consider it’s current influence on bands like The Band Camino, Emarosa, The Midnight, Modern Paramore etc… They really ushered that 80’s aesthetic back in along w/ the movie “Drive”
1975 and Taylor Swift just write solid songs. Not complicated, just simple and fun. Love it.
On release it was interesting to see how popular the 1975's first album was within the modern metal scene, I remember discovering them when Misha Mansoor and other metal figureheads recommended it.
Funny to see how much apathy for them there is now despite alot of metal/core bands sounding like the 1975 but with distorted downtuned guitars
True, I listened to them because of underoath.
I legit got into them because Misha was nonstop posting a lot about their music. Even using them as a production reference for the Juggernaut albums
When you find artists/bands that consistently put out full albums you enjoy, it makes them easily a favorite because that’s pretty rare. Love your recommendations
Finch- what it is to Burn
mineral- The Power of Failing
Fall out Boy, Under the Cork Tree
Samiam, Astray- all perfect😊
So pumped to see NOFX make this list!
The band of my youth.
I love NOFX, but Finn saying they wrote better songs than Bad Religion is wild
Yeah I wouldn't go that far. Most of NoFx records from the last 10-12 years ain't all that great
Facts about the 1975 self titled album. Timeless masterpiece. They always reminded me so much of INXS.
Pink Floyd - The Wall. Influenced sooo many concept albums.
This was my first NOFX album after hearing them on Punk-o-Rama vol 3. Love it so much.
We threw Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Got Stumps for Arms and no Eyebrows... best. shit. ever.
I got hooked on NFG’s self-titled album after seeing them open for Blink-182 in 2001 🙌🏻 I was a junior or senior in high school, so it was a perfect soundtrack for the time 😎
I love Taylor and Max Martin. Max didn’t work on Lover though. It was Joel Little and Jack Antonoff. 1989 is the one she went full pop. Red had 3 pop songs. But after losing Grammy, she went all out pop with 1989
Also reputation had max and jack
So Long And Thanks For All the Shoes is one of my favorite albums of all time. Such a transformative, influential record that would shape my musical taste for the last 25 years.
I believe that the first 3 slipknot albums are listenable front to back. Every track on them is a banger
In defense of Taylor and Folklore, if you need to know anything about how seriously she takes her songwriting, what she did with all her free time when touring shutdown in 2020 was write/record/release 4 albums now that she had nothing standing in her way. Her relentless pursuit of writing new songs is why she's on top of the world.
i'm pretty sure hundreds of other people no one has every heard of take their songwriting just as seriously. taking yourself seriously is no guarantee of success.
I remember not liking pop at the time, but when chocolate by the 1975 wormed it’s way into my ear I fell in love with it. Amazing album.
as a big 1975 fan, Self-Titled is not their best album overall imo, but it absolutely has No Skips and probably has the most grit to it as well, so I definitely get how it appeals more to folks than some of their later stuff. It's a killer debut and still holds up as one of the best pop rock records out there
I like it when you sleep is their best.
@@lobesmcgee 1000% Agree
I actually think Being Funny might be my new favourite. Happiness, Looking for somebody to love, part of the band, oh caroline, im in love with you is an insane run of very very good songs. And it still has About You.
Such an incredible album
@martinlloyd2903 being funny is really excellent and a great showcase of how their sound has matured. It's probably my second favorite album overall behind I like it when you sleep
I have no idea what a “punisher” is. I do know I loved Lagwagon back in the day and now.
In terms of Taylor albums I’d go with 1989. I still distinctly remember when it dropped and changed pop music overnight. Lover felt like a sister album to 1989.
Great, now I have to drive to Columbus to get an Orange Julius. I had one a couple years ago and I forgot just how good they were. We used to have an Orange Julius in the Orange Park mall (Florida) back in the 90’s. Luckily there are still some in the Columbus Ohio area. I forget about them until it’s brought up in one of your videos. Then I feel I have to drive out there to get one
A video on movie soundtracks could be cool. I know you've done videos on the Tony Hawk soundtrack and stuff like that, but there have been a few movie soundtracks (The Crow for example) that were awesome and probably opened a lot of people up to new bands/music.
I love the City Of Evil album and all their others are *at least* really good and thanks for explaining that a bit Finn, the "lightening in a bottle" -phenomenon- is something that takes understanding sometimes, and I've seen it in minutae, even, in my own writing.
So that's how you post a comment with a line through a word, lol
Linda Lindas lp is 10/10 imo
Great list Finn! Enjoyed throughout 🤘
I know you dont normally do full album reviews but this vid has made me wonder, I'd love to see a vid with your thoughts on the full new Blink album now its out! 🙏
I don’t really have anything to say beyond what I said in my reactions to the singles!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Ah fair play. I felt like I had different reactions to the singles but now actually I feel like the album hangs them together well and there are some cracking old skool blink songs that were singles.
10:20
I am very surprised but also pleasantly surprised you gave The 1975 self titled album it’s props
I grew up in the UK & 2013 was the first time I went to 🇺🇸 before the music video for Chocolate dropped, I always said… if someone took shoegaze while incorporating some modern day 80s stuff with ballads, & turned up the vocals with emo lyrics they would have a 10/10 album
& The 1975 proved me right, soundtrack to my 2013 summer in 🇺🇸, now a 🇺🇸 citizen, album still holds up today. Means a lot to me.
As a band they tried to break through during the 2000s emo/indie era but no one was giving them a chance. All the songs on the first album 💿 were crafted and perfected through out the 2000s and finally breaking through early last decade. Also reinstating the notions that the first album 9.5/10 is always the best one.
I saw the Chocolate music video before flying out to the states & I said…. this song is amazing, that band is gunna be huge
Only guitar band this past decade that has mattered in mainstream
I do agree they haven’t topped their self titled album yet.
I Like It When You Sleep = A very good follow up but a few duds on the album, too many songs that meant nothing and could of been scrapped and the roll out first single was bad, they should of lead with The Sound instead of Love Me, low 8/10
A Brief Inquiry = Sooo soo so close being a 10/10 but just fails to stick the landing towards the end of the album, 9.2 out of 10… All the singles were great, started off so strong & different but if the album was just 9 songs instead of 15 it would be 10/10
Notes = Their worst album, The intro was too much, however all the singles were 10/10 once again, and the song People actually was such a smart move to make as a band, I feel like they needed more songs like People on the album personally, every single was fantastic but every other track with 22 in total being so so so bad. 6/10
Being Funny = 10/10 and their second best album of all time, they trimmed the fat down to 11 songs, all the singles bangers, and the thread of the album was so woven together perfectly, they made a christmas song honest and less cringe than most, the highest quality production on the album, using more singer song writer folk elements. The only reason why self titled is better than Funny is because self titled has 16 bangers while Funny has 12 both 10/10
Ironically though… their beat song is 102, the first song Matt Healy wrote and was only ever released as a bonus track etc. Best kept secret song in the UK for sure
Completely agree they haven’t topped Self-titled yet. The build up to that album in summer 2013 was something else. Also agree that Love Me was an awful choice to lead with for ILIWYS
In general, I trust in Finn's judgements of music; I believe has the in-depth experience to draw upon that can be relied upon to make assessments of any given band's material. I got back into straightedge and hardcore because of his takes and recommendations on the genre, and feel as though I haven't been led astray...until now. Perhaps it's a matter of personal inclination, but to call these albums 10's, requires a moment of pause.
So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes and Pump Up the Valuum are essential NOFX.
That Nofx albums from 97. Their run of ribbbed through pump up the valuum is perfection
Just throwin it out there other skate punk albums that are really good front to back...in my opinion are Pennywise Unknown Road,Face to Face dont turn away,Rancid lets go,Ten foot pole Rev,Bad Religion Stranger then Fiction,NOFX Punk in drublic just throwin out a few probably missed alot of other 90s skate punk classics
NoFx wasnt the skatepunk kings of the 90s, Pennywise were
I've barely started the video. That New Found Glory album and the first Rufio full length were the soundtrack to the parts that didn't suck about the last half of high-school. I blame those two albums for why I couldn't get into pop punk beyond those two bands. The musicianship, the relatabilty of the lyrics, the obvious chemistry within the band, that was the bar that all the other pop punk I heard after couldn't rise to.
Straight up couldn't agree more, pure punk perfection.
EDIT: Joey Cape has been making a lot of really art house acoustic hipstery stuff for the last decade or so, that's where I think the Lagwagon punishers are coming from. There's probably something similar going on with Jason from Strungout's career as a visual artist.
Omfg❤ I am so glad that you finally mentioned that 1975 that album truly is a masterpiece l.i absolutely 💯 agree 😊 I honestly think that you could do a full segment on the history of 1975
Always enjoy seeing other people enjoy Lover so much, it's a great album and agree that it's her best.
I also like Lover a lot. And I just looked it up and was very very surprised to find: Apparently Max Martin didn't have a hand in crafting that at all :O 90% are Jack Antonoff and a man named Joel Little, the latter of whom shares the sole writing and production credit for You need to calm down btw. Just like Finn I thought that there was a lot of Max Martin in Lover, but no
I don’t agree it’s her best I think it’s actually 1989 or speak now
i love the way finn breaks down context
Hey Finn, curious if you’ve ever heard of Bad Suns? Language and Perspective is a poppy album I’d give a 10/10 as well, great group.
By far their best album. I feel like they did a great job with the “poppy guitar” music as Finn put it
A great judge of an album is if your kids can not just sit through it but sing to it and tap along. My girls never get bored of GNR Appetite For Destruction, there are other albums as well but mostly local bands her in Australia that most haven't heard of but that GNR album is still bloody awesome
Of course Finn is a singles over album guy. I disagree on so many things but I still love PRMBA content so much.
I think I appreciate it so much because even though his opinions are strongly held, he's also aware his opinions are subjective, and is capable to explain so clearly why his personal tastes shake out the way they do.
This, rather than blindly asserting them as fact, and never really punching down on anyone who disagrees. That becomes all too common once the follower count hits a certain number.
So happy to see Finn staying consistent, and open minded.
That’s also my favorite NOFX record. Been jamming it for 20+ years.
So long and thanks for all the shoes changed my life when it came out!
At this point, I'd be more interested to hear about some on of your favorite "non metal/rock" etc bands (or songs).. what is Fin hiding in his closet?
A strange affinity for Weird Al Yankovic? Secretly loved Madonna or Michael Jackson? Listened to parents' Bee Gees album every day as a kid?
The people need to know!
I listen to tons of pop, rap and country! My audience won’t watch videos about that though
UPDATE: after posting, heard you mention Taylor Swift @ the end... so ok, there's one for the list
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA I bet they would on your better channel!
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA I'd watch them but that's understandable
Thank you for explaining condoms! I had no idea wtf was foing on!!
Pennywise wasn't on Fat, they were on Epitaph. Fat does, however, have a great lineup of bands.
"You should just like GOOD MUSIC". Love this video, love how you conder all genres
I’ve never heard 1975 before but that clip of their song you played reminded me of Panic! At The Disco lol
Idk if they're all no skip 10s, but the three album run of New Found Glory, Sticks and Stone, and Catalyst is pretty insane.
I didn't like Catalyst very much
I think their best was the debut on Drive Thru. perfect in every way
NFG ST is still one of my favourite albumbs ❤
There was a joystick ahead of those special balloons for a reason. It has a red spot for when to hit the spot, or like the best majority of us. Just fire
I love the subtle roast to the audience at the start of every video 😂
I was 12 when A7X self titled came out. I heard almost easy and was instantly hooked. Them and The Poison by BFMV really shaped my music taste growing up.
i got called a poseur a lot in the 90's just because of my love for Rancid and NoFX, both of which are still some of my go-to bands when it comes to punk. people who shit on Rancid ans NoFX honestly only do it because they are popular bands. absurd. they're popular because they're GOOD BANDS. rad to see "So Long.. ." on here. that is NoFX's most underated album with Pump Up The Valuum also being criminally underated. love every album you listed here Finn!
Great takes here Finn. I’ve been saying that the 1975’s first album is their best so I’m glad you agree. The deluxe of that record is especially good too.
I just love any song that was in any of the classic CS 1.3 - 1.6 frag movies (Oslo by storm, NiceOne, frag or die etc). A short list below
Lagwagon: Violins
Jack of All Trades: Blacklist of no good (Underrated banger)
Millencolin: Happiness for Dogs
Millencolin: Fingers Crossed
Iron Maiden: Fear of the Dark
Vanessa Mae: Contradanza
Avenged's Self Titled is what put them on my radar... I think a year or so after the album released. I had dismissed them after not caring for Bat Country; that was everywhere. But after being a huge fan ever since, Waking the Fallen is my favorite. Them and Trivium are probably most responsible for my getting into music with harsh vocals, and Waking the Fallen and Trivium's Ascendancy are still probably a couple of my favorite albums with harsh vocals.
U should do a nofx album ranking!
White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean #1 imo. How could it not be?
The first The 1975 album is pure 2013 Tumblr-core along with Arctic Monkeys A.M., Lana Del Rey Born to Die, Lorde Heroine.
This new found glory album was the first CD I ever purchased, was mainly intrigued by the album art but ended up loving it…..they’re just colored water balloons btw! 😂
finn...i laove yor stuff..you are the best>>
I believe The Stage is truly the spiritual successor to City of Evil
the first strokes album is perfect example of one of those hipster albums that actualy rules
I saw the 1975 on Halloween. They put on a performance in costumes. Great show.
Just went through my CD collection and put the ripped songs on my phone, including my NOFX collection. I had forgotten how fantastic "So Long..." is, but my hot take is that "Heavy Petting Zoo" is their best.
Explains why I have no friends, though.
Heavy Petting Zoo is extremely underrated.
@@lidiaspazzardAs close to "progressive skate-punk" as anyone can get!
I saw nofx at some fest just waiting for the next band. Totally taken for granted
Everybody I knew praised Punk in Drublic (still a great album), but I always thought So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes was probably top out of all of theirs. Pump up the Valuum was up there too.
Finch-What it is To Burn is still damn good today
You should do a video on the new Green Day songs, they sound really good so far, kinda surprised me, sounds a bit like some of their older material
He has
Country fans weren't so much mad at Taylor Swift as much as the radio stations and industry pushing her on to the country mainstream. Most everyone who loved country at the time couldn't accept her from the start. I do like her early stuff, and a few songs here and there, but yeah country elitists were waiting and banking on the moment she would finally claim pop as her genre.
True
I'd argue that Rancid was the most important "legit" punk band of the 90s
I'm glad u mentioned that NOFX album. It's their best as it has EVERYTHING!
The used self titled is a perfect album too
Fat Mike is a really underated bassist. One of the reasons i picked up bass. NOFX has some really solid albums but a lot of people just seemed to throw them in as just another skate punk band.
He’s so shitty, but so good. He truly is an enigma of the instrument.
Speaking of porn on dial-up modems, my brother printed an image one time but it took so long to download/print that he forgot about it in the printer tray. My mom found it and punished all of us because he wouldn't admit it.
💀
If you like 1975 check out emerosa. They come from a post hardcore background and play pop rock now. Great vocals
Finn has talked about newer Emarosa before
@@UnhumanNewman oh nice. Haven't seen that one.
love the 1975 and the self titled will be forever be my fave i wish their other albums sounded like self ttiled
Really interesting picks, some of my favorites are -
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel
Skeleton Tree by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Grace by Jeff Buckley
I See a Darkness by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection
Voodoo by D'Angelo
Symbolic by Death
All I do while watching these videos is try to guess what the closing sound bite will be.
rancid and out come the wolves is definitely a top 10 album all time
The 1975 covered "Time Consumer" By Coheed And Cambria, and that was how I discovered them. I agree though, only their early stuff is exceptional
Paper Rings on Lover is a straight up banger
If you ever get rid of your indie allergy 😅 you should listen to Arcade Fire, specially the Album We. Só beautiful
Damn, Finn basically telling my teen story. NFG self-titled is perfect, their best album. Growing up Mormon I had no idea they were condoms on the cover till my 20's!🤣
Man early 2000s were the greatest time to be alive
As a teen in the 90s, we always considered nofx and pennywise as baby's first punk music.
Finn you make me laugh so hard! Your videos make super nostalgic of my youth. Thanks for making me laugh on a day to day basis. 36 year old millenial here :)
1) Six Feet Under- Graveyard Classics
2) Six Feet Under- Graveyard Classics 2
3) Six Feet Under- Graveyard Classics 3
4) Six Feet Under- Graveyard Classics IV: The Number of the Priest
I have one The 1975 song in my rotation because I like anything catchy. 😉 The song is “UGH!” from their second album.
Thanks for all the shoes, wore out that cassette back then. It came out in 97. I agree with you that it's their best NOFX album up to that point (didn't really follow them after that). I disagree with you about Bad Religion though. I think Bad Religion thru Against the Grain is better than any NOFX in my opinion.
I’d say that ILIWYS,FYASBYSUOI is tied with self titled in terms of the 1975 albums
„The Special Hug that your Mommy and Daddy do on his Birthday“ I’m dying
I think Give Up by Postal Service was very influential also
6:10 1997. Best nofx album ever. In my top10 all time any band any genre list for albums
The 1975 take is spot on. Easy for people to dismiss from afar but if you actually listen it is a masterpiece
Hey Finn, I have a question about that special hug mommy and daddy do. Why does daddy hug mommy really hard from behind on his birthday?
It's worth mentioning that The 1975 listen to emo. Specially Matty Healy, his favorite bands include Indian Summer, Algernon Cadwallader, Mineral, American Football, etc... Go listen to their early music under the band name "Drive Like I do", it's so good. Also, if you like their debut, I'd recommend listening to The Blue Nile, one of their biggest and most underrated 80's influence.
Although Fat Mike himself i know has said SLATFATS is NoFx best record, to me its Heavy Petting Zoo because its such a personal favorite. As a concept record about hobos and deviant sex, it pretty much describes my job as a public transit driver to a tee lol
“You know about the special hug that your mommy and daddy do on his birthday.” 😂🎉
Trying rub one out on a 56k modem was the biggest pain that people today will never understand.
Nofx without a doubt is my favorite band of all time. Pump up the valuum is the first cd I bought. Never looked backed. I’d say I’m more into the albums mike did real quick like f the kids and surfer. Also like 50 songs that weren’t good enough.
Fat Mike is massively underrated as a songwriter too. Really in a different league.
