Don’t worry Finn, I didn’t start drinking until I was 23-24 lol
not a fan of offspring? sus
Possible topic for a future video... Poppy just released her new track and HOOOOLY SHIT it's a banger. ua-cam.com/video/mD9xotOWQSk/v-deo.html
You started using drugs at 28, that’s the age when I stopped 😂😂😂
This was such a great year. Limp Bizkit came out with Significant Other, the movie Deep Blue Sea was in theaters, Buck Cherry had a song about cocaine, and life was good.
Limp Bizkit is 🤮🤡🤮
Deepest bluest my hat is like a sharks fin
99 kinda didn’t feel like part of the 90s it felt like it’s own thing
Korn came out with issues on 1999 the previous year the released Follow the Leader
Deep Blue Sea? - How about Fight Club, The Matrix, The Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project, Magnolia, American Beauty, American Pie, Star Wars Phantom Menace and countless other iconic movies?
Totally different genre of rock normally not talked about here, but a band I absolutely love: 1999 was also the year Sigur Ros released Ágætis byrjun, which made them popular.
“Hey Man, Nice Shot” is a God tier song. Filter is so underrated.
All it takes is the first 4 notes and I'm immediately depressed.
I love the history/lore between Richard Patrick and Trent Reznor.
i love Filter, i legit have all their studio albums
That whole album "Short Bus" is damn good.
@@JC_2311 Under is still good. Does Jurasitol count?
Not just music, '99 was the peak of movies, too: The Matrix, Fight Club, Office Space, American Beauty, American Pie, 10 Things I Hate About You, Eyes Wide Shut, She's All That, Big Daddy, Austin Powers 2, Analyze This. Even The Sopranos started in '99.
That may just have been the peak of pop culture, period.
80s had the best movies. Early 90s after that.
Plus all the movies produced in '99 (released in 2000)!
*Gone In 60 Seconds* for example.
Pro Wrestling peaked around 99 as well.
@@DX5555555 No dude. It was at its peak in the 80s to early 90s. WrestleMania 6 was in 1990 when Ultimate Warrior fought Hulk Hogan. Probably the most iconic peak but a few years later it went downhill. It was the time of Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Andrew the giant, Million dollar man, Jake the Snake, Mr perfect, the rockers, demolition, Randy Savage, Rick rude, Hitman hart and many more.. It was WWF.
@@TheRichie213 That was a peak but not the peak. Wrestling was never hotter than from 99 to 01. Even during Hulk Hogan's prime.
1999 was a great movie year: Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty, Magnolia, …
Fight Club and Matrix are still amazing and groundbreaking (and easily most quotable) movies. Didn't Blair Witch Project came out in 1999 as well? It pioneered the shaky camera/found footage horror genre.
@Nikki Li Yes The Blair Witch Project came out in 1999. I remember leaving the theater after watching it feeling befuddled by what happened at the end along with everyone else.
You might have seen The Sixth Sense, Blair Witch Project, American Pie, Star Wars I: Phantom Menace … all from 1999
..., The Mummy, The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, Notting Hill, Office Space, Toy Story 2, Cruel Intentions, Being John Malkovic, Eyes Wide Shut,... similar to pop and rock music, Hollywood cinema used to be so much better and more creative back then compared to nowadays.
@@ghost_mall that's true.
The year I graduated high school. The summer of 99 was such a romp, a feeling of endless opportunity. It really was a more relaxed time. Three songs come to mind.
1. Len - Steal My Sunshine
2. Backstreet Boys - I want it That Way
3. LFO - Summer Girls
Took a family trip to Canada that summer and it seemed like those songs were on constant repeat on Much Music.
Yup those songs were on Much All the time
Only because we didn't have social media back then. That's why it felt better
🤮
The Rob Zombie family Thanksgiving role-play was brilliant. This video is instantly S-tier because of that lol.
No Mr. Bungle. California was a masterpiece. I don't remember any singles though. That was an album I saw in the music store in 1999, picked it up on a whim and was blown away by how crazy it was and is an all time favorite to this day. 13 by Blur being another that i bought after seeing the video for Coffee & TV and really liking that song, and was also very pleasantly surprised by that album. Very dynamic and unique.
13 might be the best Blur album, their most experimental at least. But they are from Britain and this list is very US-centric. I'd also put Skunk Anansie on the list, which is another British underrated band, they too had probably their best album released in 1999 (Post Orgasmic Chill, great stuff)
Bungle is so much better than these corny pop punk bands lol
California is my least favorite album of theirs, and I still think it's incredible. Fully agreed. (Also, I thought I would hate Blur before I listened to them, but then it ended up being great. If anyone hasn't listened to them, try listening.)
My theory on Bungle's California was that it was a troll against RHCP at the time when they released Californication as there was a giant beef between RHCP and Bungle.
Both are on the same record label
Bungle's album was originally called "In Technicolor". At some point WB made Bungle move their album release date because it was suppose to be the same day as Californication. I think Bungle changed the album to California to puke fun of them.
California is one of my favorite albums, but it never had any mainstream exposure so I’m not surprised it wasn’t on this list.
"Where Do We Go From Here," is a beautiful song I'm glad you mentioned it. Filter was a favorite band of mine and "Take a Picture," was the first song I learned on guitar
1999 was the peak of that one time we all collectively decided industrial disco metal was something we should all listen to. Powerman 5000, Static X, Orgy, Rammstein, Rob Zombie, etc. What a time to be alive.
Also Staind has one song that I actually like, but I never remember which one it is. I've tried to find it (not very hard) for years and I can't. I'm starting to think that maybe I imagined a Staind song in a fever dream that I like better than all the other Staind songs. Also Aaron Lewis' country career has been MASSIVELY successful. People who stay in their metal bubbles probably don't even know that Aaron Lewis has been a fucking legit country star for the last 10 years.
If you dont know the song Mudshovel by Staind off of their 97 album check it out. Its my favorite Staind song that not many people may know because it was before they popped off with Break the Cycle.
@@clutchfrench96 Mudshovel is not a song I would put on my playlist, but it's not bad. There is another song from (I'm pretty sure) that album that I do like.
1999. I became a full-blown juvenile delinquent man-boy. I was 16. I loved anything even remotely "edgy". My 21 year old brother would let me smoke with him and his friends.
99 was my senior year of high school, and this list took me back. Even the songs/bands he didn't recognize were all over rock radio that year.
On the topic of Filter, i always had a particular appreciation for their album art. Repeating text, meaningless shapes as symbols, numbers and bar codes all over. their albums look more like some kind of accessory you would buy at an auto parts store. Neat aesthetic.
All my friends give me shit for listening to 311. They’re in my top artists on Spotify every year. Love them. Always love when you sing their praises. Very underrated and extremely talented band.
They are just a good vibe and have an awesome, huge catalog of music. As Fin pointed out, everything through Evolver is great and even afterwards there's a lot of good, fun songs. Fantastic live too.
🤘👽🤘
Oleander was great post grunge rock. They actually had a song in the American Pie movie.
Neon Ballroom by Silverchair is super underrated
'99 was special for me because that was the first year I got "in touch" with music and what was relevant/popular. I was only like 5. 😅
Wait, Finn didn‘t listen to *The Fragile* which is Nine Inch Nails most ambitious album?
You still hear it in every movie trailer.
Can remember buying Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile" & listening to it totally spaced out surrounded by speakers.
I love Stroke 9. You have to give Little Black Backpage another listen. The beginning is slow, but it picks up right after you clicked off of it. As someone who is close to your age, this was definitely on the rotation of Y100 in Philly at the time.
I came to the comments section to see if anyone pointed this out. I was like, "Noooooo, you stopped listening at the worst possible time!!"
Haha I came here like "wait, I can't be the only one who loves Stroke 9"
IKR. Around the lyric, "don't want to talk about it..." it gets WAY better and keeps going.
Get Born Again by AIC was with Layne, it was his last recording session with them. And Get Born Again is one of my favourite AIC songs.
Their 2nd to last song, the other one being Died which is also great
Loved AIC’s box set in 99 and agree the GBA was a highlight
Died is even better
I have quickly become a big fan of your channel, content, and your personality. Awesome, awesome stuff man. Thanks for your hard work in what you do.
Thank you!
On the Hip Hop tip, Dan the Automator and Prince Paul's Handsome Boy Modeling School album "So... How's Your Girl? is a slept on masterpiece from 1999. With guest spots by Kid Koala, Grand Puba, El-P, J-Live, DJ Shadow, Mike D, Del The Funky Homosapien, Sean Lennon, Money Mark, Trugoy the Dove (RIP), Biz Markie (RIP) among others! On the alt music side BECK's Midnight Vultures dropped in 1999. Amazing album that is probably his most underrated. Hollywood Freaks and Debra are absolutely killer songs. Finally, my daughter, Emma, was born in 1999! ❤
I love “never meant” and American football but ya it didn’t even register in 1999, it grew rly slowly through the 00s but they got big in the 10s. One of the best albums of 1999 but didn’t define it
That’s awesome you mentioned The Blind Lemon. Two of my bands played there in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Our Lady Peace is so good, Finn! That album "Happiness..." is amazing, but I think you'd have a hayday looking into their follow-up album Spiritual Machines. They worked with Ray Kurzweil to make a concept album that tells the story of humanity reaching the singularity, and the way they changed instrumentation and mixing throguhout the album to facilitate that whole 'humans becoming one with computers' is really cool. Total lightning in a bottle album. One Man Army is actually my most played song according to iTunes. Not my favorite song, but apparently the one I've listened to the most.
Would love to hear you dig into OLP's catalog. It's good stuff, man. Just say away from their stuff once they started working with Bob Rock. You probably recognize a couple tracks off their 'Gravity' album like "Innocent" and "Somewhere Out There", but that's where they started to go downhill for many of us.
@ghost mall easy to think that given Raine has a similar voice, but that's really where the similarities stop. Pumpkins went all in on grunge then returned more alternative (after the short-lived electronic era of course), but OLP has always been that cross section of alt and pop.
Loved/liked everything through Spiritual Machines, after that, it fell off a cliff for me.
@@JC_2311 yup. I can listen to gravity on occasion, but that album has good songs, it isn't a good album.
Did you see they made "Spiritual Machines 2" last year? Breaks my heart, I tried to give it a good listen... Couldn't make it through half the songs :(
Naveed through SM though?
::Chef's kiss::
@remakeyourself Yeah, I knew I wouldn't like it. It seems to happen with many bands. Either they change too much or you change too much. Honestly for OLP, it's when Mike Turner left the band. Coincidence or not, the stylistic change afterwords just sucked.
I was a massive fan of their first two albums and that first one came out when I was in high school and when I first got drums. Practiced a lot with Naveed. Didn't love anything after Clumsy.
The shade thrown on The Offspring kinda hurts. They were the godfathers of pop-punk, and were one of my favorite bands as a teenager. Oh well, can't agree on everything I suppose.
Yes Finn, 1999/2000 was not only the peak of music, but the peak of the entertainment industry and modern western culture as a whole. Most of the music was banging, most of the movies were banging.
I wished I was a teenager at that time, instead i was only 3/4 years old. One of my very first memories is the August 1999 Solar Eclipse here in the U.K..
But 1999/2000 was the peak of modern western culture and unfortunately I don’t think it will ever get back to that.
Well said. I was 12 in 2000 and it was a era to behold for the entertainment industry.
The peak was NIRVANA in 1991....everything else was a reaction to that...then 911 happened and destroyed all the pop punk vibe...then NAPSTER began the process of legalizing the stealing of Music...paving the way for UA-cam & Spotify and GUTTED the Music Industry.
There was nothing like going to a cd store back in the day. I'd be lined up on album release dates waiting for the store to open to get my copy. Trying to rip off the plastic wrapping, the smell of the new CD and booklet. Those were good times, those days are long gone tho
@@amd1273 I went to another town just to go to a record/cd store a week ago and copped a slipknot self titled and Iowa new in package for 10 bucks each...man that was awesome just browsing n buying a few cds!!
no you're wrong. the peak of music is 1650 - 1920
The Decline by NOFX, best song of 99 and best song ever.
The year I turned 13. It was a great time
Fear Factory is my favorite band. And Obsolete is probably my favorite album. Either that or Demanufacture.
A legit incredible year! I didn’t know Fear Factory back then because they never played on MuchMusic or MusiquePlus, but i knew the album covers from the Columbia House flyers. I got into them when Mechanize came out and was just blown away. I really love Obsolete.
And Filter’s second album, damn what a record! The 1st single from it is so amazing
Euphoria Morning is an absolutely amazing and beautiful album…still.
I'm 38 and have still never had a drink in my life.
It’s hard for me to think about American Football as “non-relevant” for people in the US, as I was thrilled by that album in 1999 living in Central America (Guatemala). We were so in love with those songs 👌🏻
The Lenny Kravitz leather pants squat video is indeed amazing. It could easily be revived as a Tik Tok video to be endlessly looped.
Oh boy, don't say that out loud 🤫😅 I feel it's only a matter of time...
1999 really popped off with music AND movies. you guys were determined to end the 90s off with so many cultural bangers
True. 1999 was one of the best years ever for movies, too: Fight Club, The Matrix, The Mummy, The Sixth Sense, The Green Mile, Office Space, Toy Story 2, American Beauty, Notting Hill, Cruel Intentions, Being John Malkovic, etc. - similar to contemporary popular music, Hollywood cinema used to be so much better and more daring and creative back then compared to nowadays, where it just bores you to death.
I was a fan a bands like Blink and Green Day as a kid in the mid to late 90's, but that Nothing Gold Can Stay album from A New Found Glory was really what started me down the road to all the punk and eventually hardcore, metal and whatnot that has been such a prominent part of my music taste in my life.
Agreed. I hated pop punk and was mostly into metal and grunge, but Hit or Miss (the original. The auto-tuned vocal hits better) got its claws in me and have been a fan of pop punk ever since.
How the hell did it not mention Slipknot's self-titled album, that did indeed come out in 1999? That was Slipknot's break-out year. This whole video, I was waiting for it to mention that album, or at least, Wait And Bleed, from said album, but alas, it did not. Finn, I know that you are a 'Knot fan yourself. I was hoping that you would mention it, lol. No biggie though. You still kick-ass 😊.
Falling away from me from Korn. The biggest song of 1999. It was released in November so it's probably the biggest song of 2000
Filter are a really great band indeed. Best choruses ever
98/99 was my 7th grade year.. I had just started to listen to punk ( fat wreck/epitaph) but always paid attention to alternative rock and nu metal ..1999 was definitely a great year
Like Fred Durst once said:
"It’s nineteen-ninety-nine baby…"
🔥
"Anything without Layne is not the real Alice in Chains" 🙏you said it and I totally agree
I have never heard anybody say, "yeah I like Buckcherry".
Hey man, nice shot is an incredible song. Totally underrated.
If I had a 12 month period for the peak of music it's August 1991 - August 1992
Metallica Black Album
GNR - Use Your Illusion 1/2
Pearl Jam -Ten
Nirvana - Nevermind
Pantera -Vulgar Display of Power
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Mr Bungle - debut album
Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Faith No More - Angel Dust
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto:
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Dream Theater - Images and Words
Ozzy - No More Tears
Live's Throwing Copper is insanely underrated. Classic songs like "All over you", " Lightning crashes"," I alone" and " Selling the drama" are enough to make a good album. I don't like all these songs but the deeper cuts are solid too.
Tonic was the first band I saw by myself for my 16th birthday. They’re a good 90s rock band.
Yes to this list! This was THE playlist of my local alt rock radio station I listened to everyday. Think I was in 8th grade. Good awkward times.
We need another list VIDEO like this!!!!! Thanks!
I disagree about Austin Powers. I just rewatched it after many years and still loved the original movie. I didn't really care for the 2nd and 3rd movies anymore though.
your first beer was on my birthday! Sept 7th!
Would be awesome to see a video on 311 Finn! Great video as always!
🤘👽🤘
Finn caught me off guard with his likes for this year. He seems to not have an oppinion on much from this year. He must have touched his first b oob this year.
1999 was the last year I rode the school bus and I was jamming to all this shit on my Sony disc man. Orgy was my favorite band for years back then.
Also, in Omaha, March 11th is definitely 311 day.
1998 was my birth year but I always find punk/pop punk albums from that year and love the discovery factor of punk music especially with very small bands
0:30 i too had my first beer in 1999. Y2k night and all... I was a whisker beyond my 12th birthday.
Chris Cornell's Euphoria Morning was my intro into Jeff Buckley, EM came out when I was 16 and loved everything Cornell, then read about Jeff Buckley and fell in love with his music, but it was too late by then, he had already passed away.. RIP both
Don’t feel bad... I found out about Buckley two years ago even though I was born in ‘80.
Absolutely fell in love Grace & even his posthumous release!
1998-1999 was the most amazing time in rock I've ever lived through.
what about 1991?
@A NEW KIND OF WAR what about?..
@@samuri119 98-99 is the most amazing time in rock? What about NIRVANA and the rise of Pop Punk?
Meh...
@@samuri119 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah 1999 LIT and 311 are soooo much better & important than NIRVANA Nevermind & GREEN DAY Dookie. To each his own....I also feel meh...towards NIRVANA & GREENDAY/RANCID but I recognize they are better and more important than LIT & 311 & or any popular music 1999
Yesssss I love Filter, thank you for giving them some love!
I'd argue 89- 1992 Janes, Cult, Pixies, Camper, Nirvana, soundgarden, sonic youth, replacements, Faith No More, Mr Bungle, RHCP, love and rockets
I would agree.creativity and originality in music was completely gone by 94 and that goes for most rap music also with a few exceptions
Would love a video about 311 😊 always loved them
🤘👽🤘
I was actually listening to that Orgy album the other night and was thinking, this is really good, so under-rated.
all of their albums are actually great! one of my favorite industrial/electro bands
💯🙌🏻
Finn's big 4, pretty sweet thanks! I'll deep dive with 311 sometime soon.
Turned 16 in 99 and went to Woodstock 99, 30 minutes from the house. Amazing year.
99 was by far one of my most memorable years of music, I think this list nails it
you got me finn! i really thought youd jump around into the stroke 9 song and like it, but here we are... at our impasse, its like ska all over again.
I remember the hipster backyard show kids being obsessed with American football in high school. That was 2013 for me and I just found out the album actually came out in 1999 lol
I turned 21 in 99 too
What a summer that was
And great music all over the place
Yoooooo I didn’t know you loved 311!! We need a video on them 🙌🏼
Fun fact: the singer of Filter is the brother of Robert Patrick (the guy who played the T-1000 in Terminator 2).
Collective soul is huge in Canada
I honestly can't believe you don't think sevendust is very good. I've been following them since I was about 4. I think they are one of the most severely underrated bands ever. Super tight, technical, and just all around heavy with amazing melodies. Not to mention they've been jamming for over 25 years 🤘🏻
My older step bro gave me Home when I was probably 7 years old, and I remember buying Alpha at walmart a few years later. I actually jammed both front to back on a long drive during the holidays and they absolutely hold up 🔥🔥🔥
I remember that Tonic song because it was like the theme for American Pie. The dvd extras had the music video in it and featured the cast of the movie in it
I went to a concert like 5-6 years ago that was like a day long punk festival with The Offspring and Bad Religion near the top of the bill, but one of the biggest reactions of the day was for Lit at like 2 in the afternoon when they played My Own Worst Enemy. Great great song.
In 1996 MTV had a live Filter show combined with a super model fashion show, the band is rocking it out loud asfk , and there's these 6-foot blonde super models sashay'ing across the stage and down the runway, It made no sense then and it makes no sense now, but it's awesome , youtube search something like Filter Hey Man Nice Shot Fashion Show 1996
When Finn said "GIsh" was the only Smashing Pumpkins album, I felt that (I am not old enough to feel this way). Still feeling out Siamese Dream rn.
For me in 99 it was AFI black sails, Danzig 6, Tiger Army, nine inch nails fragile, heck the Misfits famous monster's. When I was playing my Dreamcast or playstation 1.
You have good taste.
6:45 - End of Days soundtrack was awesome. Especially because of Korn's "Camel song" which is one of the creepiest and imo best old school Korn songs.
Finn: Huge American Pie Fan
Also Finn: I’ve never heard You Wanted More by Tonic
Jamiroquia was prime around this time I totally agree!
I started college in the UK in '99, and only know a fraction of these songs. Hip hop and Drum n Bass was my unwitting musical landscape.
I intended to take things seriously when I started, and hadn't used anything for a week (which felt like months); before finding myself with roommates that not only shared these interests, but broadened them.
Siamese Dream qualifies as old Smashing Pumpkins for me.
1999 was kind of a tough year for me but the music definitely carried me through. Fear Factory's Obsolete, Soulfly's debut, Cranberries Bury the Hatchet, RHCP Californication, all awesome.
A bit of a left field suggestion, but CKY's debut came out in 1999. They were right there with the Jackass movement and the soundtrack to a lot of skateparks in the era
Very true. But CKY didn’t really hit until Bam released CKY2K. Not a lot of people really watched the first video “Landspeed” or even knew the band. Their IDR album was released in ‘02. I love that band and I feel that eventually Deron and the guys will maybe get back together.
That whole collective soul album is fantastic
You mean 1995? Nine Inch Nails - "The Downward Spiral": This album is considered a classic in the industrial genre, featuring hits like "Closer" and "Hurt".
Fear Factory - "Demanufacture": This album is a fusion of industrial and metal, with heavy guitar riffs and aggressive vocals. The title track and "Zero Signal" are standout tracks.
Front Line Assembly - "Hard Wired": This album blends industrial with electronic dance music, featuring tracks like "Circuitry" and "Plasticity".
Ministry - "Filth Pig": This album is a departure from Ministry's earlier work, with a slower and more experimental sound. Tracks like "Reload" and "Lava" showcase this new direction.
Skinny Puppy - "The Process": This album was the last one released by Skinny Puppy before the death of founding member Dwayne Goettel. It features haunting tracks like "Death" and "Jaher".
Don't be hard on yourself from waiting till 21 to drink, I was 13 when I starred and wish I didn't now man! Keep up the good work.
Damn, someone made a video on something I've pondered about for a long time. I was 12 then and the music of those days definitely painted my world then. I can't say the same about other years since.
I was in a band that opened for Oleander at the House of Blues in New Orleans in the late 90s. They were pretty good. Their big song was the “down when I’m loaded” song.
It was the most fun time. Rivalries are fun. It was korn/blink vs backstreet/Britney. This was super important to me in 9th grade.
311 is also a favorite band of mine. Creatures For A While is from 2003's Evolver.
🤘👽🤘
I agree Finn, Filter is a great band. I really like their 2010 record The Trouble With Angels, and Title of Record is one of the most underrated records of the 90's
The blind lemon is the foundry these days. Great venue!
That American Football album is spectacular, but I agree it didn't get a lot of love until later on when people finally started to realize how good it was
I also love 311 they were my first favorite rock band as a kid growing up. I'm 30 now
Finn on fire w/ the family commentary today! I'm rollin'. We got two bands that had their brother do the artwork cuz they just learned graphic design on the school computer and Rob Zombie coming at his brother, calling him Spider 0.5beta at the Thanksgiving dinner table. And I'll never see that RATM album cover the same. Tassels on a leather jacket, oh my!
BTW, those final 2 songs of AIC w/ Layne are depressingly brilliant. Get Born Again is on the hypocrisy of organized religion and Died is about Layne's long-time girlfriend that, well, died from an OD. Really heartbreaking song.
311 was doing the rap metal thing way before Limp Bizkit, and like 2 years before RATM came out, underrated for sure!
Incubus - Make Yourself 1999!!! on of my all time favorites. American Football nice! Filter for sure. Lit used to be good be country sounds. OMG New Found Glory the greatest. Offspring Kids aren't alright is soo damn good, my street growing up in a song. Orgy and Sugar Ray was my first concert. 311 soundsystem is fucking rocking. Creatures is one of the best songs ever, I break my neck everytime I see it live.
Great Video once again, love to see it.
1999 peak fashion and music and movies
