Rick’s fake nice. He’s egotistical. (Part of how he gets along with Sting, Steve Luthaker, etc.)
You’re real, Finn. You’re snark is not mean spirited. “Metal gatekeeper” would be a great t-shirt.
14:11 I think Rick used to produce some c-tier Nu Metal bands back in the days - that's why he might appreciate the Trapt production haha
@@maximusg88 Yes. But he has the ego of a Quincy Jones.
@@misteress3840 no clue... Don't know the guy personally 😂
@@maximusg88 Lol! But Beato seems pretty full of himself in his vids and Finn doesn’t. Beato bragging about his son’s perfect pitch is some creepy pagent mom ick
I hope Beato and them start including you when they do their little group collabs. You can educate them about real artists like Brokencyde
Finn i like your videos as much as the Beato's videos, and you have a great funny line that says: "this song is objectively good, but i hate it"
That could be on a shirt
my shirt would read "rap is objectively good, but i hate it"
Was gonna write this comment almost word for word lol
Hoobastank's Crawling in the Dark definitely belongs on the list instead of The Reason. That song is an absolute banger.
*Factss.* 💯
Crawling in the dark objectively slams 🤘
Ahhh that song was ITS OWN VIBE back then!! I swear!!
nobody knows that song
Hey the reason is a banger too.
Not even a minute in and Finn is doing a "How do you do fellow kids".
Army Recruiter- What made you decide to want to join the Army?
Finn- Trapt and Godsmack.
I attribute all of my substance abuse problems in the 2010s to a 2000s being forced to hear that Finger 11 song repeatedly.
Actually, “1985” is a cover because SR-71 recorded the original version. However, it was on their third album, which was only released in Japan well past their brief time in the spotlight.
Not entirely a cover, as Jarret from Bowling For Soup has writing credits on the song. He did change it up a bit. Listen to SR-71's version, and the chorus is a bit different, as is the bridge and the last verse. It was enough to get some writing credit, but it started as a song from Mitch. Mitch knew it was a song better for BFS than his band, SR-71, and reached out to Jarrett about it. The connection between Mitch and Jarrett from Bowling for Soup is .... Butch Walker. Butch produced both bands (and a whole lot more). If you listen to the BFS songs before Butch and after Butch, the songwriting is night and day. Jarrett learned a ton from Butch (as did Mitch, who became a good songwriter too).
Man i love how you can hate a band/song, but recognize its musically good. One of the biggest things that is missing in the metal/punk Fandom. Cheers!
That's kind of how I feel about Hotel California. Well-written, well-structured, elegant rock ballad that tells a captivating story. But, classic-rock radio overplay stripped ALL of its joy for me.
@mc98smusicmoviereviews93 agreed. I don't need to hear it again. For me that is the case for most of Led Zeppelin.
Wow, it felt good to hear Finn say he hated that Finger Eleven song.
They played that Finger Eleven song 10 times an hour on 99.7 The Blitz
Dude your comparisons are hilarious. “Macy’s-Core”, “iPod-core” “when you have a crush on Cody down the street” “I feel like I have to join the Army/”/Mr. Trapt 😂
AAF is such a great band. Their first album is amazing. "Attitude" is SO good!
They took a hit when someone fromblike a pop punk band said they were real tools while on warped tour. I just remember a lot of people being like, yeah but they are douche bags because.
@@frederickdelius1106 because what, Frederick??
"If it were the soundtrack to a Christian teen drama," is such a vibe.
Beato-McKenty collab when?
Would love to!
I’d like to see Finn do a collab with Beato and another with Justin Hawkins
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Yeah Finn!🕶🤙🏽
Better start buying amps if you want to be Beato.
@@eatinglightning3144 Justin just did one, but is breaking it up in segments in the future.
The scenes you paint to a song are fucking gold. Always has been, always will. Kills me evertime.
Hahahaha it’s PERFECT
Check his series on “What makes this song awesome.” He breaks down Blink’s “What’s My Age Again.” He says Tom’s guitar playing is very well crafted and of course Travis’s drumming is on the next level.
His very First WMTSG is all the small things
What makes this song great*
AAF’s follow up to this album is pure gold! It’s a bummer people just know Smooth Criminal.
Agreed
I saw them in concert and they killed. everyone was jumping, and yeah beforet hat i knew nothing about their music. its so strange
Fynn "I don't like it, but it is objectively great" Mckenty
HE seems like such an awesome chill dude and gosh that studio is beautiful.
One of the comments in your stream chat made me listen to "downfall" after like 10-15 years and I almost drowned in damn nostalgia. I remember playing that on repeat for literal hours in 5th/6th grade.
Damn I interned at Adam Schlesinger's studio stratosphere sound in NYC back in the day. He was such a nice guy. RIP Adam! Thank you for being such friendly person and so down to earth, man.
I saw Finger 11 at a local festival with a bunch of other bands, and they literally did a Franz Ferdinand interlude in the middle of Paralyzer, lol.
(Just for the record, the headliners were Jimmy Eat World and Paramore. I was definitely not there to see Finger 11.)
Paralyzer era F11 isn't the greatest but their first 2 albums are great. I think I saw them 6 times between 1998 and 2002 or so.
@@DrBdan8 Greyest of Blue Skies is a great album.
Personally the greatest one hit wonder of the 00’s is All The Things She Said by tATu.
They by Jem is also one of the very best 00’s one hit wonders.
The Poppy cover is good too.
Not a one hit wonder because of "Not Gonna Get Us".
@@Chelaxim tATu are absolutely a one hit wonder. (Unfortunately as they were very underrated)
@@nu-metalfan2654 But they had like three big hits, so that no longer qualifies them for One Hit Wonder status, the clue is in the name lol.
@@shaunhutchinson4707 The only hit tATu had was All The Things She Said.
Finn, your “this song is like”s are so perfectly spot on! Unbelievable how you come up with a new one and nail it every time! Multiple lol moments.
I haven’t thought about the store Ross since I last got dragged there for back to school shopping. You pulled that reference out from DEEP in the memory banks!
Came for the songs, stayed for the air drumming🥁🤙
Thanks for putting a smile on my face. I needed it today. Great work brother, keep it up.
As someone from Scotland, it was great to see 2 Scottish bands on this list (Franz Ferdinand and Travis), although I think you should give Travis some more time as they are fantastic songwriters. Neither of them count and one hit wonders either, Franz Ferdinand especially are far more than Take Me Out!
Yeah neither of those bands are one hit wonders in the UK and Ireland. I remember in "Why does it always rain on me?" by Travis was in the charts for what felt like years.
This list is cleary one hit wonders in the USA
@@Coxy_Wrecked Even in the US Franz Ferdinand had 2 hits. Take Me Out's highest chart spot was 66 and Do You Want To from their second album charted at 72.
Too bad they were never bigger here, I didn't really care for their 3rd album and lost track of their new releases after that but their first 2 albums were back to back to back fire.
Yeah, I was legitimately shocked when I saw Franz Ferdinand in a list of one hit wonders. I would have assumed they were bigger in the US.
i would never assume franz ferdinand is a one hit wonder. they are always in every important music festival all over the world. while travis is not as consistent, i still see their name on those festivales from time to time.
Mitch Allen from SR-71 wrote 1985. He sang it for my unit in Baghdad.
Finn “I don’t like it, but this is an objectively good song” Mckenty
Finn sending Corinne Bailey Rae to finishing school is such a vibe.
My brother and I love Rick. His picks are pretty bad but he is an amazing musician, love watching his theory vids. The thumbnail for his video is so hilarious, it's literally what someone's dad would make for a thumbnail if your dad was awesome but still your dad. You're getting funnier and less negative Finn, I can tell you've made some new years resolutions. That baby is gonna change you in such a great way.
I love him, but he's a total boomer lol. He does have a soft spot for numetal though as he was producing during that time and worked with some bands in the scene
@@nathanthomson1931 yeah I know he worked with shinedown
Bowling for Soup had 2 hits! How could anyone forget the iconic Phineas and Ferb theme song?!
Girl all the bad guys want
I would like to see a deeper analysis of what makes a one hit wonder. I came up with four categories. Failed industry plant whose one hit was written for them, mediocre band that caught lightning in a bottle one time, great band where it is our fault for not diving deeper, or the band was just too short-lived.
I would argue that some of these aren't "One-Hit Wonders", some are more like 2-3 hit wonders. Fountains of Wayne also had "Mexican Wine" which was a hit. Hoobastank had "Crawling in the Dark" from their debut album which put them on the Nu-Metal map. And Jet also had "Rollover DJ" and "Cold Hard Bitch".
Rick put Eve 6 in his 90s 1 hit wonders video and they had at least 3 hits.
definitely not on the same level or nearly the same level. they are one hit wonders
Running Away and Crawling in the Dark reached 44 & 47, respectively, on the billboard top 100. It’s not the number 2 that The Reason reached, but I would still consider those hits.
Nine Days was my first ever concert. Nine Days, Vertical Horizon, and Third Eye Blind in Little Rock, Arkansas. I’ll never forget!
Alien Ant Farm is a really good band. Movies was also a great song. They still tour. Great band to check out if they come to your city.
“I don’t know this song at all whatsoever” *chorus kicks in* “oh wait yes I do”
Also when Paralyzer came out I became too embarrassed to ever recommend Finger Eleven to anyone again. They used to be so damn good in their earlier albums
That Finger Eleven song is a nightmare. Every time it comes on the radio it is an instant NOPE and I change the station. The song that haunts me on my drives around town.😂
This guy is like the friend you had who always said, “I hate this song!”
But then, when it came on the radio, or you were at a party, you would see him rocking out to it.
I used to visit Fountains Of Wayne every Xmas with my family…they used to make this huge, multi-level Christmas display…great memories! Miss that place! I went to William Paterson University too which I’m sure you know is in Wayne as well since you used to live in Montclair😀
So many bands on this list that I saw at Coachella, giving me big nostalgia for when that festival used to be good.
Couldn't agree more about Alien Ant Farm. It's a shame just how overlooked they are.
Several bangers on that La Roux album. Loved it.
La Roux is severely underrated
In for the kill was way bigger than bulletproof
Yeah I saw La Roux when they toured for that album, I LOVED that album (and I don't know why I used the past tense there because it's still awesome.)
Colourless Colour favorite song from that album.
Lips of an angel's solo was the first solo I ever learned on guitar.
Legit my two favorite music UA-cam people honestly
There's an alternate reality where the sitcom based on Hey There Delilah was made. But instead we got Glee, Big Bang Theory, and New Girl!
Rick's drumming along as his listening to something is the best!
What you could do is a video called the Strange History of the Rainbow Butt Monkeys and you can air drum like Rick Beato to get you over! For now I am off the Ross to get some boot cut jeans! Great episode!
i am addicted to this channel
Finn, you are liked and loved for who you are!!!
Aw man I love story of a girl !!! That's one of my favorite one hit wonders I thought it was 90s though
And alien ant farm had some good songs other than the m.j. cover , never knew that until I watched one of your videos Finn so thank you lol
I thought third eye blind sang it till today
I went to see New Found Glory in August 2022. Between bands, they played music over the PA system. The last song before NFG's set was "A Thousand Miles", and most of the audience sang along at the top of their lungs. I thought that was pretty cool. Vanessa Carlton has pop/punk cred. lol
Literally crying laughing when you got to Finger Eleven.😂😂😂
I started following Rick because of his "what makes this song great" I saw episode 1 and was hooked! ;)
Teenage Dirtback might be the best and most known alternative song from the 2000's, I've seen two artists the past few months wich had That song before they played, one was Casper a german rapper who OS know for his emo lyrics and indie and folk based beats, the other Band is Stick To Your Guns and at both Shows the whole venue sang along to it, it's crazy how big this Song is.
That whole album went hard
Rick and Finn together is awesome.
Great video!
Travis had like 4 or 5 top 10 hits here in the UK and at least 2 top 5 albums. One hit wonders in the states maybe 🤔
fun fountains of Wayne fact, in the soprano's Tony goes to the actual fountains of Wayne store to fix the fountain he has at his house.
It takes more courage to be open and nice to people than it does to be a dick. It’s harder… it takes character and courage.
That ATC song got a lot of play in Europe. I heard it at least a few times a day on German radio stations and the video played many times per day on MTV Europe along with "Can't Get You Out of My Head" by Kylie Minogue. Was the years of "la la la" in pop music lol.
"I don't think I know this. Do you guys know this? Absolutely, story of a girl?"
*Hook plays*
"Oh I do know this"
LOL I think this is everyone's reaction to that song.
Around the world was one of my favorite songs as a kid.
Your BFS take was really solid, Finn.
The Family Force 5 cover of Bulletproof was pretty solid. I am not aware of a single song they did otherwise lol.
I still dig some of their shit.
They're a very unique band. You might love it or hate it. (At least before the name change and the more poppy music)
Wobble!
Those first 2 Finger Eleven albums are solid. Their second is much darker sounding. Paralyzer was rough though...
I, for one, would love to listen to a conversation between you and Rick Beato.
I always liked the riff to Paralyzer but you blasted it lmaooo
I always liked that finger eleven song. Lots of good songs that take me back to 18-25. Great video. I actually scoured the internet a couple years ago and found a beanie with little Bill. I still think it's a great look. 👍
...I was really hyped to air drum to the last song with you
The Elektra blue reference took me back, I'll be right back you guys
Love Rick! He honors the history, but doesn't hate on new, modern music with that "my generation is better than yours" attitude. His lengthy video interviewing Bernard Purdie was especially great. You two should do a collab.
Finn, I think what sets you apart from other music youtubers is that you talk about the culture and community around the music. Which can be really fascinating, especially when as a viewer I know nothing about it or you basically describe us. Noone else does it like you. Which is why I think Teenage Dirtbag sits firmly in pop punk. Not because it sounds like pop punk but because the people listening to that song listened to blink not butt rock.
i remember that travis song and "why does it always rain on me?", i liked them both
Those beanies with the brim were cool as hell when I was 12-13.
"Finger eleven is just like nails on a fucken' chalk board!" said the new nicer Finn 😃
Ra - Do You Call My Name a one hit wonder for sure even though they had a couple good tracks. If there was a 21-40 list I can see it in there.
Fun fact: The drummer for Hoobastank is married to Amy Allen, who played Aayla Secura (the blue Jedi) in the Star Wars prequels.
A legend, talking about another legend. Good times ;) haha
I find you likable. It is because you are honest and blunt. I hardly ever agree with you but you stand by your opinion right or wrong. Keep up the good work. I would have a drink or 12 with you.
man this was a throwback. I like the new version of put your records on by Ritt Momney, it's a vibe. And, finger 11 paralyzer my friend got for Christmas, and listened to it over and over and over
Yeah Rick is awsome. Love to learn some music theory with him.
A Hangover You Don't Deserve was on a short list of albums I played until the CD skipped. That album alongside American Idiot made 2004 almost worth living through
I still wear a brimmed beanie in 2023 because I’m a hat guy and it’s a great hybrid for colder days.
When A Thousand Miles comes on I immediately think of Terry Crews in White Chicks.
“Being a one hit wonder is a death sentence” when is Trapt’s turn? 😅😂
I think we all want to be adopted by Rick Beato!
Fountains Of Wayne the store is featured in The Sopranos opening sequence and the episode where Tony gets pulled over by the guy from Rudy that works for Notre Dame but never saw a game innate stadium. Also, FountainsnofnWayne the store is no more. They tore it down. Anyways, $4 a pound.
WHAT!No Crossfade,that's so cold
You got the “it’s hard to like him sometimes but I wanna like him” thing going for you.
Your ability to create a specific -core dig is impressive.
Hey Finn did you go to coconuts in Wayne NJ? It was right down the road from Fountains of Wayne.
There's a Sopranos episode where Tony goes to the Fountains of Wayne store lol
I have a set of those Eargasm plugs. I play drums live on a regular basis. They are the fkn best. They take a couple practices to get used to, but I love em now.
The songwriting on that Bowling for Soup album was clever as hell.
Hi Finn! Doubt you'll ever read this but I've been watching you on and off for a few years. Always thought you were knowledgeable, articulate and often made good points, and really respected you for that, but also.. like you say, didn't seem as nice as some of the other big music UA-camrs.
Not that nice is everything, but when talking about art, and knowing what it takes to put yourself out there and make art for the world, I think nice and respectful is a good energy to bring to a conversation like that. Obviously not everyone will like everything, but we are ultimately primarily talking about taste and emotion, not right and wrong. It becomes personal in a way that a debate about economics is not, for example.
So, nice has its place imo. It's just the kind of energy I like in conversations around art and music. The internet (and the world) needs more kindness and respect if you ask me, not more dismissive and cynical energy.
This is just a long way of saying that for someone like me, a viewer a bit on the fence, it's really nice to hear you reflect on how you come across and that it matters to you. I think it's awesome and I appreciate the honesty in that. I'm not gonna pretend like I speak for anyone but myself, but I've decided to subscribe to both channels for this reason alone.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you! I’ve noticed that the more I hide my opinions, the more people like me. At the end of the day, people watch my channels to hear me validate their taste in music by saying positive things about music they like. That’s obviously tough for me from a creative standpoint but I am here to make the content my audience wants, not express myself.
@@FinnMckentyPRMBA Hmm, I wonder if this is true though? Obviously you have access to all the analytics and all that, but for me I wouldn't watch you to have my taste validated, but more to hear your perspective and take on things.
Your audience is big enough that what "it" wants is all over the place, I would think. For me, it was just enough to hear you reflect on these things in such an honest way. I respect that a lot.
All the best from Sweden!
Yeah, if I criticize music that my audience likes, I always get negative feedback for that. Which makes sense! Music is a very emotional topic for people. So I’m trying to focus on only saying positive things in the future.
AAF first album was great, drummer was super tight too, watch their live performance on leno
summer was my fav song
The funniest part about Mr trapt to me, was how he kept bragging about trapt's monthly pandora listeners lol
Ipod Commercial Core...brilliant lolololol
That "Around the World" song by A Touch of Class definitely sounds very 90s, and would not sound out of place in a DJ set with La Bouche, The Real McCoy, or Amber.
TRAPT came and played my local venue here in Fayetteville, AR in 2021, and only like 30 people showed up.😂
