Fun Fact: Andrew W.K. was the American Association of Suicidology's person of the year in 2018 for his positive messages!
Love his music, love his persona. Truly a one of a kind
Is the American Association of Suicidology pro- or con- on suicide?
Is that a real organization? I thought he was joking about that
@@jacobbelyea7945 it's 100% real
I have an insane level of respect for Andrew WK. Basically made his own genre at 21, constantly injecting positivity into his music, decided "Fuck it" and released not only a new-age piano album, but an album entirely comprised of covers of songs from the Gundam franchise, released one of THE most uplifting albums I have ever heard in "You're Not Alone" in that classic AWK vein, and then got engaged to Kat fucking Dennings. Man is the perfect intersection between chad and artist
Cool to see some Eve 6 love as well, that first album was great, and Horrorscope was even better (The song "Here's To The Night" is still a staple at high school graduations apparently)
I saw him live here in Kentucky at Louder Than Life, he literally did a countdown from 100 before he played Party Hard. He sat there and counted every single number, I have a video of it and it's so much him. He was fantastic live too
Andrew WK is a premium-grade genius, and even tho his recent material might not be as relevant today as it was, the guy is still putting up very personal and oblique stuff. i might add that he's been elected "person of the year" in 2018 or so for the positivity of his views on mental health by an American suicide prevention group. his definition of "partying" as a stance on positive mental attitude and self-respect is way cooler than just the usual "chug that keg bruh". and he did a skit for the Eric André show, that sums it all.
destroy build destroy, cartoon network, andrew is a legend
fuck yeah that show was awesome
He has some new songs that was released like last year, totally different sound. Like power metal.
Agreed. I love his last couple albums.
He's alot better now he just doesnt get the attention of a jackass movie to blow up the album like his first one...
I just wanted to say that Andrew W.K. is a really, genuinely nice dude. Back before he deleted his Twitter he followed me and interacted with me a few times- just a super positive, kind guy. Big fan of his always! ❣️
You gotta know Twitter’s bad when Andrew peaces out
@@TastySnackies While Twitter is forever a dumpster fire, he went ghost full stop across all social media. 😕
I went a festival where he DJ'd. Seemed like a really likable.
The lyrics of that Eve 6 song are so sick, every line is memorable.
Over a decade ago I had to go to AA meetings, the singer was there and handed me his business card offering to be my sponsor.
@@slashismyhommie8182 see, even that story sounds like a lyric. Lol hope you’re doing well. keep fighting the fight!
@@Nacnud92 oh, I still drink, I was in college and just being dumb, got a DUI. Had to go to meetings for a court. Haven't driven after that.
(Edit: haven't driven drunk after that)
I once saw Sir Mix-A-Lot on a free stage at the Iowa State Fair, my friend and I were there only for the one song, as I’m sure most people there were, and let me tell you, when he started Baby Got Back, the whole crowd went insane and he brought up so many people on stage just to dance and have fun, one of the best free concerts I’ve ever seen. Incredible experience I’ll never forget lol
Andrew WK: absolutely brilliant music for a lively party or a hard workout.
Andrew W.K.'s I Get Wet is easily one of the best rock albums of the early 2000s. He had a rocky career afterwards, but his recent stuff is great: You Are Not Alone from 2018 was great & the metal stuff on God is Partying too and I'll fight the guy who claimed the album is unlistenable over it in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Sup? ;)
Lots of videos about Andrew W.K. lately, just re-listened to I Get Wet today, still SO FUCKIGN GOOD. Just a fun album from front to back, hard not to smile listening to it
Yeah! "Unlistenable" seems EXTREME.
You Are Not Alone is a masterpiece, I’ll rock, paper, scissors anyone who says differently.
I Get Wet is one of the best Rock/Metal albums of all time. Let alone the biggest sound ever.
Andrew WK's wall of sound coupled with the positive lyrics rock
He really only did the wall of sound on his first album. It really sticks out production wise.
@@xenos_n. idk I get Phil Spector vibes from his newer albums too. Sounds very wall-of-sound to me.
I never listened to Andrew W.K. but I think it's hilarious that his shtick was basically "metal, but FUN" and that was somehow legitimately new and refreshing. We had "metal, but funny", we had parody bands and joke songs, not so much "metal, but FUN" I think
Need more of it
@@CyrusCageSCWS try Amaranthe, they mix metal and fun imo kinda like "dance metal"
Electric Callboy and Ice Nine Kills both embrace the fun in their own way
It's time for some fun
Party metal
Now that I’ve grown up, went to college, dropped out, and struggled through trade school… I can confidently say I hate that college song 100 times more than I did as a kid… I didn’t think that was possible.
I remember reading a review of party hard that described it as "a double vodka+red bull smashed straight into your eardrum"..😁
Party Hard is a legitimately great tune, and the majority of his music is a lot of fun. You could play Party Hard on the PA between any live set and people will be happy to hear it.
AWK will never be a one hit wonder to me, I was a fan since the beginning. His second album is his best I think.
I kind of only know it as the Penguins' goal song - hadn't heard more than the chorus, but it's fun hearing more of it, it's a banger :)
I Love College was originally supposed to sample the riff from Say It Ain't So, but since Rivers Cuomo wouldn't let it be cleared, the song had to be reworked (although it can still be found on UA-cam, and there are even mashups of the two songs).
Quite ironic that a song about drinking and partying would sample a riff from a song about alcohol tearing a family apart.
say what you will about weezer, but looking at their career, Cuomo is clearly a very smart guy
This song was gonna be bad regardless
When Andrew WK plays party hard live now he starts a countdown from 100 and every show I've seen live on YT it just goes OFF
I saw his sets at Riot Fest 2019 and 2021 and yes, it absolutely goes off. Every song from I Get Wet makes the crowd go insane.
I'm amazed Right Said Fred are even known in America. I'm English and know how bad it is. It was a weird time in the UK when labels were trying to capitalize on the acid house scene, which basically wouldn't have existed without MDMA. There used to be a Europop show in the UK in the 90s, which mocked the music; can't remember what it was called now.
Are you talking about Channel 4s Eurotrash? With Antoine De Caunes and Jean Paul Gaultier?
Yeah, that does sound familiar
That song was huge in America for a little while.
Asher Roth performed at my fraternity house back in 2010-ish. I opened up with a set for him, then played lead guitar while he rapped this song and a few others.
I don’t remember much from the night, other than it being the best time ever 🍺
My white bread wife who has never listened to a full album in her life has gone to an Eve 6 concert and I love that so much.
Idk if I'd call the red jumpsuit apparatus a 1 hit wonder they make some absolutely amazing music especially from thar album the whole thing is amazing.
Your guardian angel is better than face down
One hit wonder just means they didn’t have any other big hits, but usually one hit wonder bands are honestly really good and underrated
Everything else sucks after their first album.... one hit wonders.
@@benjaminbardzinski3666 thats not what one hit wonders mean
@@hikhik6441 the original commenter doesnt understand it either
Aw man! I love Andrew WK. I’ll never forget being at Ozzfest and people booing him and he yells out on the mic “F*CK YOU! WE CAME HERE TO ROCK!”
Kinda helped to turn the crowd around. Good times.
I dunno if it was just an off day but his show in Manchester 6-7 years ago was terrible.
@@amandalewin2872 this was 2003 or 2004. So I’m sure he was at his peak then. Sorry the show was a bummer :(
I would highly recommend listening to that entire album from The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. Great record; one of the most underrated & unique sounding voices in that genre IMO. Love the content, Finn!
I think you need to get caught up on andrew wk. This stuff is fucking fascinating. Best work just came out and he all the sudden disappeared the AWK story is odd and very confusing. He's possibly the greatest performance artist ever
Regarding Asher Roth, there's actually one important public health related thing:
Wearing two condoms is a BAD idea according to every sex educator I'm aware of. This is because they will rub against one another and actually be MORE likely to break.
RJA definitely isn’t a one hit wonder... two platinum songs, another one was gold, and a platinum album. Compared to these other artists, they’re far more accomplished
Yeah i was legit shocked to see Red Jumpsuit in the list. I love there first and second album. also they put out an album not too long ago and it has some good songs
It seems like most people don’t remember anything other than face down. Including me. Every time I see or hear someone talk about them it’s always about how they’re a one hit wonder.
I loved that whole album by RJA back in the day, I listened to it all the time. Considering how casually misogynistic a lot of pop-punk/emo bands were then, it was cool having them make an anti-abuse song AND that it became a hit.
I love this series, watched this live but am watching it again. One-hit wonders are such a fascinating category for me.
"I'm too sexy" is the sound of a bunch of 90s eurotrash club kids on vacation
Never heard of those power-pop bands before but cotton eye joe and too sexy for my shirt will definitely continue to be played long into the future. I want to say Right Said Fred were tongue in cheek but I can't remember the story behind it. Also, a yt channel called Trash Theory did a really interesting video on Andrew WK recently - I had no idea he was so mysterious.
Andrew W.K. being a one hit wonder or not does not even matter. He's captured Kat Dennings. He wins 🙌🏽
I wholeheartedly agree. Kat Dennings is stunningly gorgeous!
I'd nominate him for outstanding achievement in the field of excellence for that alone.
Captured her like she's some type of Pokemon?
@@tombstonejones9581 she's the gold standard 🙌🏽😁
@@tombstonejones9581 shiny variant
"Roots Bloody Roots" is my treadmill song to get me pumped up when I'm feeling worn out, and now all I'll be able to hear is Right Said Fred
Baby Got Back is objectively one of the best songs ever made and I will not hear otherwise, the guitar riff itself is so iconic
"One flat iron was not enough for this shoot" I could not handle that.
Max Collins was a super nice guy! Got to run sound for a show on the Songs & Stories tour with Art Alexakis (Everclear) John Wozniak (Marcy Playground) Chris Collingwood (Fountians of Wayne) and Max Collins (Eve 6) playing all their hits on acoustic guitars and talking about the "good ol days" lol
inside out by eve 6, face down by RJA and just a girl by the click five were my holy trinity as a child.
PS fun fact i love college samples say it aint so by weezer (i didn't ever notice somehow)
Guess the song by the weezer sample
Guess the Finn McKenty reaction
Throwdown's cover of Baby Got Back, just so good; especially live.
Cornhole is fantastic. I gotta say you're missing out on not playing Cornhole. It's a great family barbecue type of game
07:55 facts. When I was in design school (started out as an architecture major), I was also taking 18 credit hours and working. My suite-mate literally did nothing all day but smoke weed, listen to Bob Marley and Nirvana, and NOT go to class. I asked him one day why he was in college. His answer: “My dad made me go. I don’t want to be here. So I figure I’ll just party for a semester or two, fail out and then go to work for his construction company.” 😂🤘👽
The only corrections I have are Eve 6 and Andrew W.K. Eve 6 had hits with Promise and an especially big one for Think Twice, and W.K had She is Beautiful.
Let’s not forget the ‘99-2001 graduation anthem Here’s To The Night. Amazed he did Inside Out and not that one
@@ryanpolk3141 eve 6 had quite a few songs people know from movie soundtracks as well
@@codyscards6698 that is very true. I never considered them a one hit wonder by any means. I thought they were a fairly successful band in the early 2000s. Open Road Song was another one that got kinda big. Really good band. Not big into their newer stuff
@@codyscards6698 anytime!
@@ryanpolk3141 could have sworn I typed that one! Haha. Their hits aren't even their best songs. Horrorscope is a perfect album.
Highly recommend The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’s first demo album. There’s a heavier version of “Face Down” on it that’s really great and a lot of the tracks on there are bangers.
Andrew WK is my favorite Musician/artist. His last 2 albums are sick in my opinion. 🤘🤘 9:22 Literally where I'm from. Yes, everyone was beer ponging like crazy in Cincinnati/NKY. 🤣🤣🤣
Always look forward to these videos on my lunch breaks.
One of my fav segments of yours ngl
Not gonna lie, was happy to hear Eve 6 holds up - they're one of my favorite bands and especially their first two albums are so underrated lyrically and musically.
Fun fact: Just the Girl was written by Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne, which would explain why it kind of sounds like Stacy's Mom. Another fun fact: Joey, the drummer from The Click Five, is a UA-camr now (shoutout to Mr Kate lol)
Came here to make sure people knew about Joey 😂
damn, I was actually just thinking of I Love College recently and now you're covering it. I remember so many people loving it, and yeah, doesn't hold up. God damn, it was worse than I remember.
I was going to alternative dance clubs from the late 80's on and Baby Got Back was played all of the time and was so much fun to dance to. Great song!
I saw Andrew WK at a festival years ago and he opened his set with Party Hard, ended the song by saying "don't worry, we'll definitely play that again", and then preceded to end the set with Party Hard twice through back-to-back. The crowd went crazy for it every time. It was one of my favourite sets from the whole festival, and his other songs are great too. Seems like a great guy
I was one of the kids that red jumpsuit apparatus’s face down helped. Glad to hear the song holds up still 🤘🏽
Another delightful out of context quote from Finn to add to the album:
"As much as I disdain Europe, I've gotta say... I kinda like it."
I remember waking up at like 3 am on a school night to the girls gone wild commercial and it was Andrew WK BLASTING through the tv speakers lol
I love Inside out from Eve 6. Such a banger.
Oh man a local classic rock station (in St Louis) at least used to advertise local flip cup leagues...this was within the past few years. That’s how I heard of it
Re: “I Love College”: Sadly, that’s how college life often tends to be portrayed in the media (thanks in no small part to Animal House). To this day, I’m waiting for a movie or television show (which isn’t The Simpsons) to actually give a somewhat realistic depiction of college life - the closest example I can think of off the top of my head is “Undeclared.”
Party Hard is still an amazing bop and really good at the gym
Inside Out by Eve 6 is legit one of my fav songs of all time
That Asher Roth song sounds like my Freshman year at ECU in 2012 except I didn’t have friends besides my boys I met because im from there and I had a longtime gf. I remember the first semester i completely blew it and just gave up after a few weeks and just smoked weed and dabs with my boy every night and passed out at like 5 am lol I did have some success after that I ended up getting A’s and B’s for the next year or two. I’m planning on going back and finishing next spring I’m about to be 28 now I feel like a loser
"Get Ready to Die" by Andrew WK also slaps. I think it's from that first album too.
She Is Beautiful is up there too :-)
We want fun
That whole Red Jumpsuit album was pretty dope. And the bit about the Warped Tour 2015 hat is so specific and so true, hahaha.
Wish I was there for this stream. Andrew WK is one of my all time favourite artists. He was named person of the year by the suicide prevention association in 2017
hey Finn, huge fan of this channel and rhe main channel. found you recently as I mentioned before, and have been listening to your videos as I deliver for work so I'm always in the car! very entertaining stuff.
please, please, please do a full video on the band IDLES.
they are Def one of my favorites and their sound is everything I want! awesome arrangements as far as the music goes.. very punk inspired. but they are doing some pretty innovative and technical stuff.. the lyrics and the way the singer Joe talbot delivers his words is very powerful. I'd love to hear your thoughts on them, even if just in a comment :)
That flat iron comment was very relatable that was me and the buds before mayhemfest lol
Saw He Is Legend a few years back and they did a little Sir Mix-A-Lot medley during the show. It was amazing
Funny that you mention Stacy's Mom during the Click 5 song. Adam Schlesinger who is in Fountains of Wayne (and wrote Stacy's Mom) is the same dude who wrote Just The Girl for The Click Five.
Someone in the chat called Asher Roth's "I Love College" Scumbag-Stevecore lol LOVE IT!
Andrew wk is sooo fun to see live. Got to see him in concert for free in arizona in 2011, so much fun
You want regional, in southern quebec we had Casque Gants. You put on a hockey helmet and gloves and then fight, sometimes you'd spin on the swings first to get dizzy but that was a down the road thing.
The entire album I Get Wet holds up imo. Shit just rocks, and it’s got this positivity so little popular music does lol. His most recent album Youre Not Alone was seriously one of my favourite rock albums of the 2010s, it’s so goddamn uplifting. He has literal motivational speech interludes on there 😂
The dude who called you’re not alone is fucking insane especially if you like I get wet. It’s his best album.
Ohhhhh he has a 2021 album actually. You’re not alone was 2018. My bad
His second album The Wolf is underrated, I think it's even a little better than his first album. There's good stuff on his albums after those but they're not completely solid like the first two which were top-notch.
Forgot about Click Five for like a decade. Definitely listening again.
8:27 - That song always reminds me of a good friend of mine that graduated as a Comm Major from UCSB.
“Anytime” by Eve 6 also bangs. First discovered from the Out Cold soundtrack
Dude yes Inside out by Eve 6 is soooo good. Such a great song! My radio station in my city plays this song all the time.
Dude, when I was in high school I'd have to record songs off the radio because my very Christian parents wouldn't buy me music that wasn't CCM. So I recorded Facedown and I used to just listen to it over and over again to practice the drums. Loved it then, love it now. Certified classic, 100%
I was obsessed with that Click Five album....I was a VERY teenage girl at the time 😂
Appreciate the updates on the McKenty/USA V. Europe legal proceedings
"We Want Fun" and "She is Beautiful" were also hits from that album. I know that We Want Fun was in Jackass, and I'm pretty sure She is Beautiful also was part of a major movie soundtrack.
17:16 The comment about the set for mix alots video had me rolling.
I just wanted to add that I was surprised when Finn mentioned taking like 18 credits and working around the time "I Love College" came out. So was I. I worked full time and the most courses I took one semester were 3, mainly during the day. Other than that, I enjoy these videos and combined with Todd in the Shadows and Rock And Roll True Stories, I at least feel a little less out of touch when it comes to music.
Ok so the nearest city to where I live is Knoxville. The most well known nightclub there is the Cotton Eyes Joe, and despite never going there, I hear that song SO MUCH at sporting events, bull riding competitions, monster truck shows, pretty much every event I enjoyed as a kid was sponsored or associated with that club.
Face Down is an absolute banger! holds up any day of the week
I would argue Eve 6 was a two hit wonder. Inside Out is their obvious choice it peaked at 11 on top 40 but "Here's to the Night" off horrorscope peaked at number 14. To me that's close enough to say it deserves some credit. I don't think its all time memorable ear worm of Inside out but in terms of radio play it peaked almost as high. Also a few recommendations for future vids are "Pepper" by butthole surfers and "seein' red" by Unwritten Law. I would be curious to see what you think of those upon revisit.
I loved The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus' first album in college and don't think I've ever been more disappointed with a follow up album than their second album. Literally played it once and never again
The guitarist and bass player for Andrew w.k are in a death metal band in central Florida called intoxicated. Very popular local band
I remember the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus having a lot of hits back then. Besides face down their first album was a huge success. There was another big hit on it called “your guardian Angel” which is an acoustic ballad type song, and then their second album was also very successful. It had a big hit called “you better pray”. They’re actually lowkey one of the biggest Christian bands of all time, and their first 2 albums are pretty underrated in my opinion
You better pray..Is amazing :)
yep def not one hit wonder, but one mainstream song that went on every radio station i guess?
"Your Guardian Angel" was our first dance at my wedding to my late wife.
“Please talk more about how you hate Europe and bicycles.” - Ron Swanson
Oh i will
I like that Eve 6 went out of their way to write pretty good lyrics and a great chorus. I didn't think the rest of the album hit as well as Inside Out, but you could tell they weren't a lazy band and put a decent amount of effort into what they were doing compared to some of their contemporaries.
Andrew WK is awesome!
And like the chat says during his stream, a cover of Cottone Eye Joe over a Djent breakdown would be a lot of fun
Third Stone from the Sun - Jimi Hendrix - in the Right Said Fred song, check out the solo
Hearing your experiences with beer pong and corn hole is hilarious😂 I've lived in KS forever and yeah all my classmates live of that crap now lmao
What about the video for "A Favor House Atlantic"? That video was made in the 2000s, yet used a phone from the 80s/90s.
Years ago when Andrew W.K. was on Saturday Night Live when The Rock was the host, a guy on a local Pittsburgh station, I believe it was WDVE, called in and said, referring to Andrew W.K., "That guy was nothing but long hair and spasms!" I enjoyed that song, "Party Hard" then and I still do now. -Diobolos, Undead Prince Of Pennsylvania V''''V
I listened to inside out a few years ago for the first time in like 10 years...and I still remembered EVERY word. It definitely holds up lol
I guess I am glad I am in a part of the world where the look talked about in the second song never became a thing. Also glad I missed that song as well.
Don't think I have ever heard the College song before either. Could have gone without ever hearing it.
Baby got back was the jam in the middle school lock in dance's back in the late 90's early 2000's lol. so funny
I read somewhere That Andrew WK broke his nose for an album cover. Also the video of him air drumming to Cattle Decapitation, I believe, was great!!
Have you seen the Burger King commercial where they made a SpongeBob cover of baby got back to promote their kid’s meal?
I’m from Oregon and we’ve always played beer pong lol
"She Is Beautiful" by Andrew W.K. was on the same album, and is also good. :D
Never thought I would hear Obituary and showtunes in the same paragraph hahahahaha! Freakin' awesome ;)
Beer pong and cornhole are definitely Midwest things… people think I’m weird because I don’t have cornhole boards 🤣
I feel the Finn McKenty vs the Entire Continent Of Europe is a potential SNL sketch FWIW. 😎
