Banished is a game every gamer should have in their library, the ultimate chill out game that can be played on the simplest of computers. Made by one person if I understand correctly, what a labor of love. It is inexpensive and difficulty levels and map variety are satisfying and greatly change the style of game play, especially in the beginning. I agree with others here, after a few play-throughs and gaining an understanding of the mechanics load up Colonial Charter or Red Ketchup's mods or throw it all in with the Megamod with some spice on top of that and your production chains are long and challenging.
Thanks for the laugh. I'm spending my first Christmas without my parents and struggling a bit, so yeah. When you rapped to the game music, it cracked me up.
this is one of my favorite games. It's funny watching you play because i play sooo much differently. roads are like the last things i build. for me 1st. fish dock 2nd. hunting cabin 3rd. herbalist 4th. wood cutter 5th. houses. a very good strategy for sustaining wood/herbs/food is to find a (2)BIG open areas of flat land that is covered in forest. herbs grow in "old forests" btw. Right off the start i pause the game and find 2 spots close to home that can use the entire radius of a herbalist/forest lodge. taking my herbalist i use up as much open forest as i can inside it's radius. place it down and then take a forest lodge and place it right next to the herbalist using up basically the same space as the herbalist. you can also place a hunter/gather inside roughly the same radius. do this in 2 places ASAP. build a home or two right outside of the radius and place a storage shed/pile near by. dont always fill the buildings with workers btw. put 1 worker in each herbalist and forest lodge and increase as you need demand. set maximum amounts of herbs to 20. when you start to get low on maintaining 20 at a time then increase to 30,40, etc.. making these spaces and not building inside the radius of the herbalist/forest lodge will 1. allow the forest to remain "Old" as many of the trees dont get cut down fast(also getting replanted) and get a lot of time to mature. this means you can have a very reliable source of herbs growing in the old forest. you can also clear out forests where you plan to build and this excess wood allows forest lodges to plant trees and get more mature trees (set max to 100 and increase as demand is needed so that forest lodges dont CONSTANTLY cut down trees) you will also have a great source of wood and leather, meanwhile keeping all 3 of these industries contained in one tight and efficient space
neighborhoods are also not a great idea. it's good to just build houses as close as possible to all the buildings the people will be working at. this increases efficiency A TON because people live in the house closest to their job. putting workers in neighborhoods just means more walking around instead of working. i just build little neighborhoods by the places people work and just enough houses to hold the people working there. along with accessible fire wood and food.
also build tiny stock piles(2x2) next to new buildings being placed so that people dont need to walk so far when gathering after clearing space for the building
@@CH-ml4rz Yew, go for it. Makes the game much easier and enjoyable. Just don't use all your workers until a building needs them and set low max amounts of food/wood/supplies so you're not making way more than you need (over gathering)
you need a house for every family (roughly half your adult pop, especially in the early game). People don't hook up and have kids while they live with their parents. Wait too long before building and they won't have enough kids to match the death rate. Yes, the homes do store food, but then they'll eat the food in their houses instead of eating what's in storage. So the storage in houses just increases how much food and firewood you can store. They also won't have kids while in the boarding house, but it's a cheap and fast way to house large numbers of people. It's really useful when you start taking in refugees.
Banished with the Colonial Charter Mod is really fun ! Btw with Banished u want to establish resource gathering areas 1st create a cluster of hunter, gather , barn , forester , stockpile, and 1 house , once done start building homes and a school, Also seed numbers determine ur map , if u want fewer obstructions consider doing a google search for good seed numbers . The 2nd stage u need a blacksmith and tailor , micro their staffing so u have stockpiles of need clothing and tools. Fyi , a small village probably needs at least 2 gathering areas to support it, and u need a school as soon as possible to get productive adults.
This is the one game I always go back to playing. Usually without mods but once in a while, I do enjoy a mod. The colonial chart mod which has been listed, is a favorite. I always enjoy seeing how others set up their towns.
I'm so happy I'm not the only one still playing this! I added the Colonial Charter mod and the possibilities are infinite so I'm guessing I still have years of fun to go. It's really rare these days to have a game that can keep you entertained and tickle your creativity for a longer period of time, at least for me in this type of gaming. We need to express our appreciation more.
Interesting start to the game. At least in the start I don't max out a buildings workers, usually stick with just 2 myself. And I like to build houses as quickly as I have a couple to occupy to ensure their parents continue producing kids. lol There are 2 jobs I try to keep educated workers in, blacksmith and wood cutter. Basically an educated worker produces more and tools and iron are so critical. I like to build 1 of each hunter, gather and fishery to start. But your guys did real well with just the gather huts, that's pretty cool. If you decide to try mods I highly recommend Red Ketchup's Editor's Choice mod. He's also working on an Egyptian themed mod right now.
FYI rather than counting out the spaces for laying your roads you could lay down the blueprint for a house then pause the building of the house until you need it. You can theoretically layout your entire town at the beginning and just unpause the build when you want a particular building built.
Glory to raptoria!! Would love more theo town and overcrowded and other city builders but this was awsome. You play the funnest games. Im not a mod fan but ill still watch.

Beyond that I remember being able to upgrade my knight squads into fancier armor and that the hero unit might have had long hair. Does anyone else recall such a game? Castle Strike! Thanks to your series, I've managed to make it to year 10 with only one death, a hunter trampled by a wild boar. I've got a nasty feeling I've got a death wave coming up that I have no idea how to handle, though.
Be good if you did one series in just Vanilla and another with mods, so then you covered both type of players, as some players may prefer to play in Vanilla mode only and others with mods. This game looks very interesting. Enjoying your videos.

I started playing Banished a few days ago via Steam sale. Love the game, suck at it. You show up in Recommended and I just subscribed after seeing you have lots of Dawn of Man and Foundation content as well. Love the calm commentary.
I found that building food first & then houses worked way better in getting through the first winter. When I’d build the houses first I’d run out of food or firewood
Its cool to see how different people play. I make my cities so differently haha, I put the houses and storage right next to the food/production sources if possible and only use one lane. I also plan full cities using the pause mode. But sometimes that overwhelms my builders if I have too much going on at once and my city dies lmao.
This is a game that I just keep coming back to time, and time again. Mods that I always use are Colonial Charter, and Red Ketchups Editors Choice mod, both of which are available on Steam Workshop, and can both be used together without any problems. I could never go back to playing vanilla Banished any more, so I really hope that you consider using at least one of the mods I have mentioned, as I definitly would not be interested in watching a vanilla playthrough.
I cant believed I watched your 35mins + episodes , I like building games also but dont have any time to play so it relaxes me to watch your videos hehehe
I personally would have done a restart - so much of that map is lakes and mountains, which means much less places to actually build city. It will still be interesting to see what you do with it and how you handle the limited space, though - good luck!
Late to the game but better than never. My rookie mistake at the start of the game was to focus too much on stone and wood and building the town as if it was sim city. No woodcutter, no gatherer, no hunting cabin. Only one fishing dock. Come winter they were all starving and cold. Many died. RIP early settlers. Brave souls that paved the way for the generations to come.
Yet another game you've triggered me into buying just by watching your videos lol. Thank goodness for the Steam Summer Sale the other week. Loving your videos
Couple tips: you only need one gatherer to start. Also, the amount of people you can assign to work at buildings is just that: the amount you CAN place. In the beginning, it's best to just put one person as a hunter, or fisherman. Save the rest for laborers until you establish a higher population.
One of my Favorite games. Your Citizens Health is dropping , your going to need an Herbalist soon. That and you may as well gather all the stone and iron near you new foresters Hut also to max the tree growth/harvest. Like I said one of my favorites, vanilla or other wise
I think the most challenging part is building everything before winter. You need gatherer's hut, hunter's, wood chopper, 5 homes at the very least, blacksmith for the tools, and forester and tailor last, because you start with extra clothes...and the trees you can always cut down so you're not short on wood, but you need to have a good forest for more trees, and flora and fauna.
I just subscribed to your channel. Wanted to watch how someone builds a city. Just like you do. I am just having a lot of fun just watching. Thank you so much for doing this video.
This is one of the first videos that I think I saw from you, always loved this game. I remember getting wrecked by a tornado part way through, couldn't pull out of it
Your first map is a caldron, which belongs in the caldron map section which I hate! I play Plains or Big Lake, which gives you flatter land to place fields on. Remember, if you don't like a map, quit and start over until you get a halfway decent map. I also disable disasters, because it's totally wrecked, 3 tornadoes in one year is a bit much even for Oklahoma! Build all of your houses with stone, they will burn less firewood, and if you have disasters turned on, less likely to burn down. Though they will burn down anyway, over and over again.
6-ish years old now and still the genre game all others are compared to. And still hold its own bigtime. CC is a brilliant mod but I do like playing vanilla still, though I do use the Nomads Zero Pop mod if things go real bad & I ever need to bring my (many hours invested) city back to life!
YES!! So happy to see Banished from you after a long time, looking forward to the gameplay. Hopefully you play with mods though as it adds so much more to the game.
Damn I remember when I played banished way back when, a colonist horded 10k units of food in his house and my colony died off from starvation. 13/10 - IGN
Ridiculously high food reserve limit - e.g. the max possible - creating an artificial "food shortage" panic? Should have evicted the greedy hog by ordering his house demolished. (Then, before builders could get to it - because you'd none allocated - reprieved it as soon as laborers had emptied its inventory back to storage.)
Some city builders absolutely needed roads but that was one reason I liked Banish. Put some buildings down, and the villagers get there with no apparent trouble. Yes it may be a little slower but they'll get there and the player can make up for it by having more of those kinds of buildings to be produced.
You made me buy this game. I have wanted this game for a long time now but didn't have the money for it and I just found out that its on sale right now. Its only 6 something right now. Its cheap and if you want it get it right now guys.

Hopefully you play with mods though as it adds so much more to the game.
more Banished content please
Damn I remember when I played banished way back when, a colonist horded 10k units of food in his house and my colony died off from starvation.
13/10 - IGN
Ahaha did he have a marketplace near him?
Ridiculously high food reserve limit - e.g. the max possible - creating an artificial "food shortage" panic? Should have evicted the greedy hog by ordering his house demolished. (Then, before builders could get to it - because you'd none allocated - reprieved it as soon as laborers had emptied its inventory back to storage.)
Good looking game. Looking forward to watching more.
i love this game....time to load it up after a long long time
Watched whole episode! Ready for more!
“Maximizing space.. double roads” lmao
Some city builders absolutely needed roads but that was one reason I liked Banish. Put some buildings down, and the villagers get there with no apparent trouble. Yes it may be a little slower but they'll get there and the player can make up for it by having more of those kinds of buildings to be produced.
Please keep doing this series!
Wow Raptor can spit bars
This looks really fun
You made me buy this game. I have wanted this game for a long time now but didn't have the money for it and I just found out that its on sale right now. Its only 6 something right now. Its cheap and if you want it get it right now guys.
