  • In this episode I talk about the now well known, Michelin ROAD 5!
I'm now on my second set of these tires, and here I talk about how I got on with my first set, which included every situation of ridding that your average rider might face throughout a season.

Great video!! I watched this after having had a pair of R5s fitted to my 696 Monster and I'm getting really confidant and committed to putting trust in these tires when cornering in the wet in these dark winter months..... Can't believe how many miles you can squeeze out them either!!! Can't wait for the summer now haha x

Nice in-depth review Shaun. I’ll have to give them a try as previous versions of the tyre were also highly regarded. Anyway Winter is coming and bike tucked away in its winter palace til next season.

Great review, what I have found out about Michelin tyres in general is how they wear a lot more even through out their life and at the later stages you get a feeling of the bike not having the sense of balance in slow traffic which i think is the way the front tyres wear to a sharper rad .I had 2 sets of pilot road 4's getting around 8k miles out of each set. Got me a Versys 1000se with Bridgestones on and after 5k miles the back tyre has a prominent flat on it and I am fighting to balance at low speed . Road 5's soon cheers

Welcome back, i have missed your vlogs, Thank you for the review because I hate the stock tires on the Suzuki V-storm. The Bridgestone are ok but shit in the gravel and I need a tire that will be soft enough to not slide around on gravel. Now most of my rides are on pavement but a lot of the corners have gravel in them so I have got a few nervous times and with traction control cranked up to full I still have nerves. I just started riding this summer and now have the bike in storage because it is snowing, Swapped the bike for the snowmobile, lol. Now, who is going on and on!
Thanks for the review, very well done and photographed. Value and love watching your rides, look forward to your next one. Hello from Northern Ontario Canada

I’m new to motorcycling and my Triumph Tiger 1050 sport had Pirelli Angels on when I first bought it but they where pretty old then. I bought a set of Road 5’s after watching Richy Vida bang on about them so thought I’d try them out. As you said, they are confidence inspiring. A great all rounder and, after my North Coast 500 trip when it pissed down for most of the time, they were brilliant I the wet. 6k in now but definitely will get another set in the spring.

Thanks for this video, I totally agree. My new CB500X came with Dunlop Trailmax and they were horrible. Changed them at 3000 miles for Road 5's and it was like a new bike, I was giggling all the way home after fitting. Now got a new F750GS and it has Anakee 3's and they slip like hell on wet muddy Scottish B-roads so about to get them swapped for Road 5's, can't wait. The difference is phenomenal. I don't care about tyre life I care about MY life and want the stickiest tyres available. Cheers.

Good vid, I've had those on the FJR as a last set before I've sold the bike. I did lost the front massively once on a roundabout on a tar repair while fully loaded and 2 up. Not a pleasant experience. Can't really blame the tyre for that tho, I've lost the front on that one more times than anny other bike regardless the rubber, but I didn't expect that at the moment.

Excellent tyres and got mine on an offer which was even better. Rode in some heavy rain on minor roads with all sorts of crud washed onto the road and no problems at all. About 6k miles on them so far with even wear and plenty of wear left. My bike is low powered which helps to reduce wear.

I then bought a pair of Road 5 and my first feeling when I came out of the garage was "how did they remove 30 kgs of weight from my Kawa", the moto was so much easier to ride !

Man I still got my stock tires Dunlop 214’s and they got almost 4k Miles on them and they are still good! In anything they need changed for time if anything! You must be hell on tires if you burn up Michelin’s in that low of mileage! That or something wrong some where! Hell i used to race my ninja 750 and it would still do 4k miles on a set of Dunlop’s or Michelin’s! Now I chewed up a Shinto drag tire real quick like 1500 miles but they was racing so burn out and full throttle hits on it!

I had Michelin Road 5 that did not have grip on dry pavement. It did however grip surprisingly well in the rain.
After riding on the Michelin Power 5 for a day, I'm pleased to say I have good grip all day long. Not once did I get wheel spin. Wheelies, jumps, cornering, high speeds and city traffic manner was all great.
It doesn't have the tread siping that the Road 5 had, so can't expect the wet performance to be as good. Road 5 was horrible, scary with no confidence.

Hi, Ive used Road 5's on a GSA and a Multistrada , the problem with them is when they are for 19-17 in wheels they become PR5 Trails which are a softer compound so as I ride 2 up mostly I only get about 3500. 4000 miles before they square off. Ive gone to Conti Road Attack 3 which have done 4000 mile and still look like new on my 1290 Adventure s but offer fantastic grip in all weathers. If they offered the GT compound in the Trail edition I would try them again!! as you say there are a lot of differentials but that is my opinion

@@thelikeablerider8800 I'd like to fit the MR 5s now but with the Bridgestones pretty much full tread it seems wrong. I don't do much riding in crap weather anyway as I tend to be a fair weather rider and as like you say you tend to take it easy if it's chucking it down or the roads are greasy. My sphincter tightens with the fear of possibly sliding down a wet road. The MR 5s sound like a game changer. I have Pilot 4s on my BB and they're very confidence inspiring. Thanks for replying.

I have switched to Continental Roadattack 3 from the Road 5 (after 15.000km), from what i can say so far (after another 12.000km), the CRA3 has better Dry Grip - its like glue and i couldn't find the limits of grip, but the Road5 has better wet Grip. Especially towards the end of the tire life, the Road5 wet grip is much better. Since i usually ride in nice weather, i think the CRA3 is the tire for me and after 12.000km i still have 4mm left on the rear center (from 9mm new) on a 210kg bike.

I talked to a few people who rode both and it seemed like their opinion was CRA3>T31>Road5. Apparently the T31 is also more stable with a lot of weight (for example when riding with a pillion) and also lasts a bit longer.
Concering my riding style: I drive fast but fluid and i don't heavily push in and out of the corners. Basically Track and Road are seperate. Thats why i get that high milage out of my tires.

What kind of tire pressure did you run on your last rear? The same at the track? I only got 8K miles(about 13K KM) but I ran it a little below my bike’s specific recommended psi of 42. I ran 38 to 40. From the videos I have seen Michelin has said run recommended pressures because of the carcass design. I’m not sure of The idea of running lower psi on spirited rides of 38-40. I’d think it squares off faster with lower psi. I’m going to test the grip with stock pressures and see how it feels.

But you order the next set from a reputable company and they will go twice as long and you can weight them and see their not the same! It’s a dirty little secret they don’t want us to know! Now if you buy say a 25k Harley you might get the real deal tires but the cheaper sport bikes are what comes with these tires!
