      Update after a year on DRC2's with a 60/40 track to street riding ratio, and these tired kick ass! They also last remarkably well given the intermittent highway riding I do straight up and down on that silica patch. Highly recommend.

    Be careful If you are running the Michelin Power RS. Pay close attention to the ridges that form between the hard and soft compounds on the rear tire, specifically the 180/55 and 190/55. I’ve personally experienced this issue last year (not sure if that chemistry thing is new and has resolved the issue) as well as spoken with a couple of seasoned riders who have low sided whilst running the Power RS as a result of the uneven wear between compounds.
    This is not technically a fault with the tire but something that appears to affect the 190+ hp super bikes that are ridden hard through the twisties or the occasional track day. The Power RS can indeed get 10,000km from a set and they’re glued to the road for the first 2,500km - 3,000km but that tends to be where the trouble starts. The softer outer compound wears away a lot faster that the harder centre compound and creates this ridge between them that causes unpredictable slippage whilst throttling out of a corner.
    At 2,600km I took the tire back to the dealer and we measured the difference between the compounds at 2mm, small but enough to get you into trouble. This is very noticeable when starting a turn as the bike feels as if it’s falling when transitioning from the hard patch to the soft.
    This won’t affect all riders and really only applies to the mentioned conditions as far as I can tell. During the first 1,500km I’d say the Power RS is one of the best tires I’ve run but it can fatigue and loose grip with very little notice if you’re going hard at the track or cornering through the mountains.

      @Captn_Slow 6 років тому

      norsey How does it compare to Bridgestone S21?

    • @norsey_
      @norsey_ 6 років тому +8

      The S21 has a slower, more linear tip in that is very precise and easy to correct mid-corner and stands up really easily when powering on. This really helped reduce fatigue on long rides. The wear on the S21 from about 6,000km started to require more pressure on the inside bar to maintain cornering angle which is a good indicator to start budgeting for the next set. In comparison, the Power RS in the sub 2,000km wear had an amazing ability to maintain whatever lean angle you set, I even tested taking my hands off the bars and the bike maintained the corner without any steering input, just throttle. That's something I really enjoyed about the RS when they were just scrubbed in.
      Regarding the wear on the S21, at 8,900km there is no ridge at all on the rear, the wear is even across the whole tire and the hard centre line hasn't squared off much at all.

    Sport-touring tires often are enough for most people. That, or grab a category next up the line toward racing slicks.
    Racing slicks (non-DOT)
    Racing tires (barely-DOT)
    Sport tires (DOT)
    Sport-touring tires (DOT)
    Touring tires (DOT)

    I have been waffling on a new tire after getting the Dunlop Q3 and Q3+ and not digging them. They lack feel and feedback, especially when cornering... they are just too effortless for me. I am a former die-hard Michelin Power Pilot Buyer, as much as I would like to stay American I am gonna give the Power RS a try. I don't do track days, I just drive my 2016 ZX-10r KRT 50+ miles to and from work 5 days a week. We all "Like ]To Go Fast" and lean into corner with confidence but dislike paying 2 to 3 hundred on a tire every 3 to 5 k. Hopefully, these are the perfect tire? Again that time of the year when people start wondering what tires to try for the new season.. I am looking forward for your next updated review with some of the newest models (Dunlop Sportsmart TT, etc.) So far it is hard to get a tyre with 10k km mileage but this old Michelin Pilot Power 2 CT proved itself last year on a summer trip in Italy, Switzerland, Denmark where 6000 km it was fresh as 30% used tyre and I ended up the season on 10 000 where the center is scalped but still ridable for another 1-2 k may be. So how come they sell this old (7-8 years) model still and they have not focused on doing better than it for the last years.. If they still sell it, it means it is top deal and it is.

    Something needs to be said about Pirelli in general for the road - when I had P-Zero Rosso on the AMG (ok it's a car tyre) I quickly found the "Zero" stands for 'zero wet grip', to the extent that they were positively dangerous for normal road use, something that Pirelli share with their other tyres, they don't understand wet grip at all.

    The Power RS, the tire considered here the best doughnut since sliced bread, was the worst supersport tire in the 2017 Motorrad test (by far the most respected tire test in the industry). The best was the Pirelli Rosso III, followed by the Metzeler M7RR (then the Dunlop SportSmart2 Max, the Bridgestone Battlax S21 and the Continental Sport Attack 3). In terms of wear - which seems to be one of the main reasons Ryan considers it the best tire - it also came in last.

      Interesting. I have heard good reviews for the Power RS. It is currently what I run on my bike. However, with that being said I hear different reviews. I'm debating between the Q4, Rosso Corsa II and the Power RS.

      João Soares yeah that’s bs, myself and everyone I know runs the Rs. Everyone’s ratings are bs if you haven’t run it personally then you can’t judge it. It’s always that same ole bs, well my friends uncles brothers friend said it was awful. Best all around tire I’ve run on bike 15years. 2-3 track days a year and street. The reviews like this guys are basically only gonna give you an idea of a tire to try. I mean this fking guy, does he even really ride? Only videos I’ve seen of him riding are bs with the worst riding position ever. No way in hell hes pushing a rear tire enough to say this is the best tire out there.

    I intended to watch the whole video until I saw in the description that the Dunlop Q4, which was launched in May, wasn’t included. You can’t assign the “fastest tire of 2018” moniker to any tire unless you include all top competitors. That’s like a “Best 300cc” shootout and not including the R3.

    Loved the Diablo 2s. If you want a tire that sticks and you can trust to drag a knee in corners, the Diablo is the way to go. I've owned 2 sets but they last roughly 4-7.5k miles depending on how hard and often you ride. Terrain plays a big role too. Biggest downfall is that center, just isnt hard enough. I wore through the center while still having another 3-4k left on the sides. Since then I've swapped to Angel Gts and I love them. Not the best for corners but straights and commuting it shines.

    Ryan,
    Well presented, well written. I have binged most of your vids in the last coupla weeks, and as a critical critiquer (sp?) of production values, you get a gold star, and A+ --uh, critique.
    I find your comments/observations to be on-point and very real worldy. As a reclaimed biker (I've had my endorsement (license to us yanks) for 50 years, but was without mine-own scoot for the last twenty. I sold my '87 XLH to facilitate, er, ...straighten my twelvish year-old daughter's teeth (her, now, brilliant smile was the result, --thankyouverymuch) then, yielding to adulthood in a tardy fashion, grown-up life got in the way.
    All this to say, I recently re-submerged into scooter-trash-dom with a redux of my (albeit much newer) XLH to reacquaint self with the distantly familiar feel of a similar ride, then 3 weeks later added a new Africa Twin to the stable, just for the contrast. I love both rides, and so far have avoided killing the bikes or my salty old arse.
    That genesis prompts me to ask, "Hey Ryan, how about a vlog about old fartish guys, again throwing a leg over a bile after a longish hiatus?"
    Also, about that left forearm, road rash, or the heartbreak of psoriasis? Inquiring minds want to know. Possible loss of "cool-points" may be at stake.
    Thank-You,
    Mike

    When are you doing a review of the new M9RR? The M7RR has consistently reviewed very well as a "do it all" tyre (good in dry, wet and track) I have had a set and was impressed. I'm looking for a new set for a sorted 954 Blade to be used on road and track here in the UK. On my list are the S21, RC2 and M9RR. Have heard the main M9RR update is that it has had electronic use factored into it, so not much use for the 954, so keen to hear if there are other improvements as I would expect. Keep up the good work
