Greeks struggle to afford food and electricity as inflation soars

  • Soaring inflation is hitting living standards across the developed world.
    And it is largely being driven by a rise in energy prices.
    In Greece, electricity prices alone trebled last year, and the government is spending more than $2bn subsidising energy costs for households, businesses and farmers. But some people still have to choose between eating and paying their power bills.
    Greek incomes were battered by an eight-year depression following the 2008 global financial crisis and they still have not recovered.
    Al Jazeera’s John Psaropoulos reports from Athens.

      Right so what do u expect the other 18 Eurozone countries to do for Greece?just tell us what we can do for you?honestly we are almost 15 years on from the 2008 financial crisis,how does the new Metro line 4 in Athens help this woman and her mother?Metro Line 1 is going to moved from overground(which it currently is) to underground why?is it necessary?another few billion wasted yeah,Greece loses 6 billion euros every year from VAT evasion(Sales Tax evasion) imagine what do could do for this woman (she doesn't have a mortgage) she owns her own property in in Northern European I have a mortgage kids to feed we have a family budget we must live within our means as a family and country itself (6 billion Euros of that VAT is spent across the border in Bulgaria and in Turkey (Edirne) why? Bulgaria and Turkey have their own currencies and they are cheaper then Greece and less taxed,now if u Greeks want lower property taxes lower income tax lower sales tax and lower corporation tax u Greeks will have to offset all those tax cuts with spending cuts (Pensions and Public Sector jobs and salaries) because u cannot borrow more money or use the bailout money or the ECB printing press to pay for it do u understand ?there is an election coming in Greece next year more handouts and massive tax cuts and spending increases in return for votes all political parties do it in Greece at reelection time ALL PARTIES the only solution is the New Drachma devalued by 30 to 50%

      That is why many people across the world are going off the grid and try to live off the land. I am of Greek descent and have relatives who have doe that, but not feasible in the cities. You have to live in smaller villages. You need about 30 chickens, a rooster or two, a goat or cow, chicken fencing to keep predator animals away, and a garden to grow fresh vegetables. You can get Starlink for Internet and make money producing UA-cam videos, writing software, or selling get rich programs. We all know the elite create these calamities to strip wealth from the middle class, only to re-sell them their homes and other assets back again. Don't borrow money to pay for anything you cannot pay off in 5-10 years max or you will always be broke. Drive a clunker or use public transportation. Stop feeding the elite. Pay yourself first and you can live a much better life.

    It's not just energy prices. 10% inflation with small increases in wages of 2-3% will eat up 40% of your purchasing power in less than 5 years. I live in Germany. Electricity is expensive but fuel has increased by 50% this year. A liter of diesel is 2,30€. That will drive food and durable goods prices even higher. Our Green leaders are still pushing carbon taxes and EVs. Who can afford a new 50,000€ vehicle and charge it at the highest electricity rates in Europe.

    The government is stubborn not to decrease taxes on fuel, not even a cent, making the fuel prices here the 5th most expensive in the EU while the average Greek is earning around 1000 eur per month.

      @Dnpe Running a successful country isn't as simple as understanding how to do it.
      Geography plays a much larger role than people think.

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 2 роки тому

      @Dnpe You say there is no geographical reason for Mediterranean countries to not succeed.
      Lets take Greece as the example of a Mediterranean country's geography and how it affects their growth.
      Problems:
      1. Not enough flat fertile land, essentially they can't grow enough food to feed their own people nor can they export mass amounts of items such as wheat.
      2. To much mountainous terrain, this is probably the worst geographical feature any nation can deal with. Building infrastructure is EXTREMELY expensive so not enough of it gets built. What happens is you end up with many different regions not being linked properly and a weak central government. Goods can't move efficiently or in any sort of cheap manner which in effect saps demand for goods and has the nasty side effect of goods not being produced.
      3. Lack of natural resources. Yes many nations lack natural resources and get by just fine but that usually means they don't also have problem #1 and problem#2 at the same time. Not to mention that due to Greece's geography getting items such oil and gas to the interior of the country is extremely difficult to do not to mention very costly.
      There are so many factors into why a nation may or may not be successful. Some nations can do quite well despite their geography but they're in the minority. Geography along with many other factors plays a HUGE role in not only how a nation will behave but also in how rich that nation will be. The only nation on the planet which has all of Greece's geography flaws and some how managed to become wealthy is Japan. They're the outlier, they're the exception to this rule. No one else with these problems has been able to overcome them.
      Greece for example has been drowning in debt it can't pay since it's inception in 1821. It has gone bankrupt more times than I can count. Do you truly believe this keeps happening to them over and over again because they're idiots? Or just maybe they're dealing with some obstacles that seem insurmountable for their skill set as a people?

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 2 роки тому

      @Dnpe Hong Kong and Macau aren't nation states.
      Even if they were, do you or do you not believe their recent economic output is somehow related to that huge neighbor their entire economy is tied to? A place called China?
      China does have the proper geography to be productive rich and powerful. This will also filter down to Hong Kong and Macau.
      Find better examples please.

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 2 роки тому

      @Dnpe It's actually very relevant if they are nation states or not, what state they're tied to and who they border.
      Where you are and who you border is part of your geography which is exactly what is being debated.
      You're saying geography doesn't matter but then use two examples where their location on the map has a lot to do with why they're so successful.

      @History Man!, Every country on the planet was printing money like it's going out of style during the pandemic.
      Then the supply chain problems which made more people chase less goods. Then Russia invading Ukraine which took a lot of wheat, raw materials and energy out of the world markets.
      Nations which don't have access to large industrial farming and cheap energy are all going to suffer badly. It's not just Turkey and Greece. This is a global tsunami.
      Greece was insulated a tad bit longer than most nations due to being in the Euro. But in dealing with a tsunami like this, EU protection is simply a short term band aid. They'll get hit later because of it but on the flip side it will take them much longer to climb out.
      They might have been better off outside the EU in the long term.

    Greece was the testing experiment of how the next decade plus would be for the world. This was done intentionally to evaluate how to move foward with a global monetary reset. Greece has never recovered from their financial crisis and neither did the US from 2008. The US had the pleasure of printing money (QE) and bandaging their problem temporarily as they are the worlds reserve currency. Greece did not have that pleasure as their markets are tied to the Euro.

    But there is one constant, poor people all over the globe are struggling. I don't think this is a short term issue.
    Once the supply chain breaks down and international trade is disrupted instability will follow. Instability will therefore make it that much more difficult the put the supply chain back together.
    As bad as things are in places like Greece, people have it much worse in places like Egypt, Libya and their neighbors. These nations in North Africa get the lion's share of all their wheat at cheap prices from Russia and Ukraine. That has now been cut off and the poor will find it very difficult to find enough food.

      Solar panels used to be a lot more expensive per kWh just 10 years ago, it's not until recently that it has had a more competitive price for the majority, and outphasing coal for solar takes a long time + you don't want to invest in a big solar farm now if the price is likely to drop another 50% in 10 years let's say, that's not a competitive strategy.

    • @praline4157
      @praline4157 2 роки тому

      They have to figure out how to make access to solar and any other ‘green’ energy only through them and that will always require a middle man, regular replacement or expensive repairs only through them, maybe that you can only lease or use through a service plan rather than own and control yourself, and of course be subject to ever increasing regulation and taxation. It’s like my grandfather’s tractor that had an engine he could take apart and buy replacement parts and repair. He owned it at least 25 years and it did everything a tractor needed to do. Today a modern tractor repair often means it has to go in for service that needs a technician with a computer and is costly. I’m not sure the modern tractor does things that the old ones didn’t to justify the loss of autonomy and longevity. I doubt they are still in use after 25 years as they have to come out with new technology to sell you something else every few years.

    It is very clear that we need leaders that live in a different energy and consciousness on this planet. The controlling system has become destructive, and tries to strangle humanity. How absurde is it going to be before people wake up and we manage to stand together and say enough is enough?

My sisters electricity bill is over $300 a month in the summer God knows how electricity, water and gas will be raised this comming year. I know many want to belive it becuse many homeless people are druggies and lazy but yet cant see that utilities and food prices are so high that people cant pay thire rents or morgages.

    Prices rise everywhere in the world, inflation crisis are sweeping through. The covid pandamic has impacted(damaged) world economy yet we still think we all should live our lives the same as before, business as usual. That is insane!
    Regardless how much money the government has printed, we should know that lives will be different while we are in this pandamic. And till we are back on our feet again, everyone's life will suffer a bit.

      Its not the pandemic that damaged the economy but the governments’ reaction to it! This downfall or dismantling of Western economies has been planned for sometime now. Get to know the WEF and its plans for us! Im prepared as i can be for now. No debts, likeminded neighbours helping each other, food storage, ability to grow my own. My grandparents taught me survival. Since 2008 I haven’t believed one thing our government has said!
