  • With less than two weeks until the cap rises on how much energy companies can charge customers, charities are warning that the number of people who can’t afford to heat their homes will go through the roof.
Experts are expecting a 50 per cent rise on the current £1277 annual limit because of record high gas prices.
Now, charities and businesses are calling on the government to provide more funding to help those most affected.
Scotland Tonight spoke to some of those at the sharp end of what’s being called a cost-of-living crisis.

This is happening all over the globe. Here in the US prices have drastically gone up but wages are stagnant. Politicians don't seem to care. It almost seems hopeless at this point. I'm grateful I can cut back in other areas to afford it but there are just so many who have nothing left to cut.

I am from Massachusetts and things have gone way up. One thing I have learned is living beneath your means even when the money is coming in. Live with less, eat with less, go without and recycle everything. It is hard and a challenge but that is really the only way. Now that winter is coming I can afford heat (but I still live with less and wear sweaters that I buy from the thrift store.) Too many folks in the states are way over weight and not self sufficient which has to change or they will die. It is so horrible but no one ever promised that life was easy. 😔

I imagine this comes as a shock for people who did not grow up poor. There were years where we only heated rooms with plumbing in danger of freezing and the rooms were only kept warm enough to keep the pipes from icing up. We wore our winter coats, hats, and gloves 24/7 for months. Looked forwatd to going to school because it was the only warm place.

I cycle 200 miles a month to and from work in the early hours of the morning all weathers and I struggle I've even resorted to walking to and from town with my shopping since a steep rise in bus fares for the same number of stops at the beginning of the year and some said the fares are set to rise again in July it would be cheaper for a taxi each way for the distance I need to travel

@@affectionatepunch Hi, agree Shell has made loads of money, is this a world wide breakdown of the company results?
With reference to the VAT on fuel, I take your point about suspending it for a year, but Govt. spending is at an all time high, because of world wide issues. There is also a great demand on the Govt. from every dept/ministry, Police, Education, Prison service, etc. so they need the taxes.
Cancelling the tv license fee is an easy option, the bbc could charge £13.25/month, which would cover the fee.

Okay, so I see this is a world wide issue. I am in America and we are right behind with these issues. I think it’s time all of us people of the nations stand up and protest about how all of our governments are treating us. They are literally slaving us all to barely get by. No one should have to worry about being warm on a cold day or to have to chose between food or heat. Better believe those that are implementing these hikes are not facing the same issues as the average working home. It’s time for all of us, regardless of where we are to stand together and make them change how they are doing us across the world.

I switched to OVO after a legendary speech their boss gave in the Parliament about greed of energy companies. They turned out to be highway robbers. My already-high bill that used to be around £40 per month for my small flat became £60 the very month I signed up with OVO. Even though I had NOTHING running on electricity in the flat that month apart from my light bulbs in my single-bedroom flat and a single hob portable cooker and a small kettle. I had just moved in under dire circumstances and that was all I had. No heating as it was summer and the boiler was not working. I was taking my showers at my gym nearby. But I had already signed the contract and all my complaints fell on deaf ears. Finally I demanded to know what their tariff was, they refused to tell me and said they are under no obligation to reveal their tariff prices. If you want to know where thieves work, pick any energy company they're all as bad as each other. OVO are the most expensive but lie about it.

I complained and they gave me a good will gesture of £50. I said I would never go with them again. Absolute scandale

A few people I know who have had their old meters changed to the so called Smart meters saw their bills shoot up and had more power cuts. I live in a 2 bed council flat with next to no insulation. Draughts been coming through the windows and floors for years. I don't have the heating on all the time I just put it on for 1 hour at a time when it's cold to the point of shivering or put on extra clothes and a thick dressing gown over the top. I work mainly evenings full time and get for meals at work which I take home so the extra I save on buying food goes on the heating and electric. Sometimes I don't turn on the lights at night and just use a torch instead. Using a flask to keep water hot for hot drinks so I don't have to boil the kettle as often helps too.

So much for the state owned energy company Sturgeon was trumpeting about. Energy was going to be sold at near to cost as possible. All those windfarms and Scots will never have cheaper energy prices. Even Lorna Slater is slating the lack of progress on this matter. Just another failed promise from the SNP.
Sturgeon herself admitted her government’had not done well enough’ in generating energy and harnessing the economic benefits.

You all have it a lot better in the UK. Half way across the world in New Zealand, the cost of living is a little shy of what Switzerland is, the median income is lower than that of the UK, and the median house price in London is the media across the country with London prices being considered an 'affordable house' in the major centres.
Towards pre-2020, the very 'fortunate' low income household were faced with the difficult decision of rent vs food on the table (never mind heating) with a quarter of them in emergency housing which is normally short term in motels paid for using a loan from the GOV.
In 2022, the ^ situation is what I'd say a majority of working 'middle class' families with 2 sources of income are facing.

aware of these costs but since the 1st of april im realising ive become a bit slack , putting lights on when not needed, heating on when im sat in a t-shirt , again we've become mollycoddled... generations of ancestors lived without central heating and our homes are way better ... if people can survive living on
the street , living in a house, flat is a peace of cake .... UNLESS of course ur elderly or poorly , so if ur not ... get on with it .... stop paying for sky tv, smoking ,buying takeaways ,eat healthier its cheaper, compared to my childhood people have it super easy now... stop griping if ur a healthy person , it could be a lot worse!
