"It’s not even that hard to maintain a huge amount of money"! It is and it isn't. No idea how other Brit aristocracy is coping, but while traveling in India found a how members of their aristocracy (the Rajas and Maharajas) are coping after the government stripped them of "annual stipend" they got from the government; the stipends were introduced by the Brits over a century or two ago to keep them in line! In any case, these rajas could not afford the cost of upkeep, so they start joint-ventures with various hotel groups and no many of these palatial homes have become 5-star hotels that cost US$1000 or more PER NIGHT! Given the huge number of American tourists, these failing aristocrats could do something similar. After leaving there, he did not go on to any higher education. At 18 he started a career with the Coldstream Guards, but *failed* the Army Officer Selection Board exam and so left after nine months. He travelled to Australia to work as a jackaroo, but soon returned to Britain, re-taking (and *again failing*) the Army Officer Selection Board exam, before moving to London to briefly work as a stockbroker and insurance broker. _ And that is just the first paragraph of hislife. The inheritance tax is 40%. So it will not be "The easiest 30 million he ever made". It will cost him 12 million pounds which they obviously do not have. His sister is the winner because she can marry an aristocrat, and he will pay his karma for pushing her off her bike. Jolly good show then!
They have ways around that like, putting the estate in trust with him as the trustee...once that is done using one of Britains off shore tax havens everything that happens from that point on 100% secretive. Look into "Britain's second Empire" and your mind will be blown!
The greatest loss is to have so much opportunity and to waste it. Money cannot buy back time a wasted life, it erodes no matter how much of the stuff you have. You are far better off to have to work hard and make something of yourself, than to have it handed to you on a plate and do nothing with it. This is a lesson to all the people who think money is everything.
I love how the wife tried to reframe what pompous mess her husband was saying in order to make us feel sorry for them. Claiming they aren't really privileged because they don't have staff.
I think she is embarrassed by his arrogance, and probably envisioned a happy and more graceful lifestyle when marrying aristocracy. Instead, he is self-absorbed, and she is likely serving him 24/7, while the world thinks she has maids and staff serving her. Having a boorish and uncaring son that follows her husband's behavior would be only more infuriating to her, if she has a bit of self-awareness and self-respect.
I don't imagine that there are many viewers who are not appalled by the nastiness of the one family that tells a mother to shut up, pushes a sister off her bike and smiles - and whose father thinks it acceptable to essentially disinherit all but the first born, and be arrogant as he shows off a crumbling and messy home. Not all wealthy people are this egotistical or ill mannered, but this one family takes the cake!
As this was shot in 2009, i was interested to see whats happened to Arthur Fulford. Turns out he has become a reality TV personality. He appeared on Britons Big Brother but walked out after one day on the show because he felt "bullied"😂
That sister not inheriting the house and title is honestly a blessing for her. It's going to be a massive headache for the brother when he inherites all of that. Fully renovating the house would probably cost more than what the house is worth and the taxes he's going to get slammed with instantly upon inheriting is going to bankrupt him likely. Even the upkeep of keeping it in a somewhat livable state is likely draining most of the owners resources every year.
Yes! If it were mine, I would fix it up and rent it out for conferences and retreats to pay for upkeep and property taxes. But the son doesn’t seem like he would be resourceful or hardworking enough to do anything like that.
One of the most striking aspects of this piece is that it reveals even the most aristocratic Brits are likely to end up with bad teeth. (The late Freddie Mercury once told a reporter who asked him why, with all of his money, he didn't have his teeth fixed. He replied, "Because I'm British, and I don't want to stand out".) 😂
I know this is a joke but the real reason Freddie didn’t get his teeth fixed; (he was born with 4 extra teeth in the back of his mouth) was bc he was worried getting them fixed would effect his singing voice haha. Fun fact
As a Brit, I can confirm I find no teeth more ugly than the big fake white house teeth so many Yanks (& sadly now here too) like to have implanted. Replacing a missing tooth with someone real looking I have no problem with, but those moulded lookeling completely straight bright white too big teeth make my stomach turn.

A lot of aristocratic families have turned their homes into museums and inns. The Duke of Devonshire made Chatsworth into a hotel and museum and it’s thriving. He said he absolutely loves seeing people tour and enjoy his home : ) That second guy who is looking for an heir is actually adorable 😂❤
From a financial point of view, these large houses seem unsustainable. They’re far too large for the families who live in them and require the income of a large agricultural estate to maintain them. Since Great Britain is no longer a feudal society where serfs are forced to work the land and turn their crops to the landlords, the house owners have to find other sources of income and it seems the only ones that have survived are the ones that have become tourist attractions, but even that is a dwindling source of income. Plus what else is there to do in the area? It seems like a rather boring and angst-ridden existence to me. Maybe that’s why they are so « eccentric. »
Keep in mind though that we only see the ones that haven't been able to pivot into making money via modern means. The ones who have are very very quiet about their incomes and property. Then there are the ones like the Royal family that claim they have next to no money or power in the country (or world) and are probably lying through their teeth about both.
The was an episode of How Clean is your House, where the family had a huge estate like this, but couldn't afford to maintain so they "lived" in only several rooms (the equivalent of a flat) while the rest of the house was filthy and abandoned.
@@miriamllamas224 that’s not surprising. I’ve watched some episodes of Downtown Abbey and I can appreciate the rooms we got to see of Highclere Castle the same way I can appreciate a visit to an art museum, but I am aware that they are a small fraction of the whole house, which was always far too big for the people who lived there. These houses were orgies of extravagance and I imagine only a few of them can survive with modern means of income.
The problem with the aristocracy is that you used to be able to get in by earning it. You would fight for your country and give huge amounts of your own money to train and arm soldiers and go off to defend your nation. So you were rewarded for your contribution. When that obligation ended their lordships should have ended as well.
That's how many people got land and titles but it was always handed down to kids who did nothing to earn it. That's how it's been from the very beginning.
Excellent observation. Unearned and, therefore, unmerited wealth and privilege corrupt people and breed arrogance. That is why many aristocrats, and not only in England, were despised and hated. What a charming family. I am sure that not all of the aristocrats are so out of touch. I now know where the word baffoon originates from.
The big problem is that they don’t serve the same purpose as they used to. This guy’s ancestors fought for the country and were rewarded with land and titles. When was the last time this family served on the front line?
front lines. the nobles have not fought on the front line, since the late Renaissance. and haven't been any kind of use to the army since the Cardwell Reforms in 1870
@@crazydinosaur8945 Yes I agree, these were some of the families fighting before that time. They've been redundant ever since.

In Sweden we had a count, who actually fought as late as in WWI, on the side of the Central Powers. Ironically he's only remembered today because he was a pipe smoker and had a pipe tobacco mixture named after him that still exists.

This is almost like an understated comedic mockumentary of the British aristocrats , but from 15 years ago (when Gordon Brown was PM)
The first guy must be Harry Enfield surely
From Wikipedia:
_Fulford attended Sunningdale School in Berkshire, but *failed* the common entrance exam for Eton, so instead attended Milton Abbey School in Dorset. _
And that is just the first paragraph of hislife. This man has lived a sad life full of failure. He knows his only "value" is his birthright.
😂😂😂😂😂 thanks for the laugh
Yep, he's not even a real aristocrat, just a member of the landed gentry. Milton Abbey is famously a school for those too dim to get into better public schools. And somehow it comes as no surprise that he's a member of UKIP.
I think he's a bit too "bred" out and gene pool poor. I hope for the children's sake the wife has something good going for her. It's sad and a bit morbid. Unintentionally funny as well
He seems on the lower end of the bell curve, perhaps it’s inbreeding
You can tell his wife hates him. Her facial expressions clearly tells it. She’s rethinking her whole life and asking why? The children? They too have her rethinking her decisions in life. Poor woman! Thinking…why me?😔 😞
She's prob sad she raised such tossers and has king baby for a husband.

Yeah, I saw her. A multimillionaire can do better!
That boy needs a slap from his parents horrible spoilt brat
The greatest loss is to have so much opportunity and to waste it. Money cannot buy back time a wasted life, it erodes no matter how much of the stuff you have. You are far better off to have to work hard and make something of yourself, than to have it handed to you on a plate and do nothing with it. This is a lesson to all the people who think money is everything.
they put their property & assets in Trust = no inheritance tax. Look into this the commoners can do the same.
I love how the wife tried to reframe what pompous mess her husband was saying in order to make us feel sorry for them. Claiming they aren't really privileged because they don't have staff.
And I truly think they actually could find some ppl to serve the "nobility" for very cheap 😂
And if their idiot son had "staff", he would be even worse.
The guy is a legend!
I’m not sure he has a choice about who inherits, but the other things he does. He is truly bizarre in my opinion & hilarious 😂

Yet the reality is likely that she would make it thrive, and he will simply fail. He made that pretty clear the first time he opened his mouth.
Hadn't thought about that and the daughter will likely marry in to money, she'll be fine.
Yes! If it were mine, I would fix it up and rent it out for conferences and retreats to pay for upkeep and property taxes. But the son doesn’t seem like he would be resourceful or hardworking enough to do anything like that.
They use trusts to avoid paying inheritance taxes.
@@tnijoo5109good thought! But I don’t think he’s interested..

A lot of aristocratic families have turned their homes into museums and inns. The Duke of Devonshire made Chatsworth into a hotel and museum and it’s thriving. He said he absolutely loves seeing people tour and enjoy his home : )
That second guy who is looking for an heir is actually adorable 😂❤
The Fulfords aren’t aristocratic or titled, they live on an estate that’s falling apart with minimal income to fix it.
These houses are post-serfdom. But lots of people used to live in them in their heyday.
The was an episode of How Clean is your House, where the family had a huge estate like this, but couldn't afford to maintain so they "lived" in only several rooms (the equivalent of a flat) while the rest of the house was filthy and abandoned.
this problem was solved perfectly in Guy Ritchie "The Gentlemen"
Having said that, the noblemen who behaved properly and treated their tenants well, were loved and respected. Many French noblemen were defended and saved from the guillotine by their loyal and grateful tenants.
