- In this week's video we're discussing the cost of living on the island of Naxos, Greece. We've spent the past month or so in Naxos and longer than that in Greece and we're discussing all the costs associated with living on a Greek Island in the Cyclades during the shoulder season (we're in Naxos in October).
We go through all the costs we could think of including:
Housing - cost to rent an apartment
Utilities associated with the rental Including:
Cable/Internet
Water
Electricity
Restaurants/Eating out
Groceries
Travel Insurance ( We use SafetyWing: safetywing.com/?referenceID=2...)
Phone Plans - We've been using the App Airalo for our eSims. To get $3 off your first purchase use code ANNA2082 or TREVOR1536
Transportation costs (public transportation, car rental)
Gas

From a Greek, 1500 is REALLY high, you can rent a good apartment for 400 euros, total bills and rent would be like 550 euros. Another 300 euros for groceries if you cook at home and thats all. At most 900 euros combined, so 450 to each one of you. Everything else would be just fun.
2024 update...rents are much higher nowdays.
We know.. but we explained why we went for the higher cost place. That pool for us was great as it was often to cold to go to the beach. Plus it was a great location - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers too expensive is this a tourist video
You got seriously ripped off for 1500,even if you had a pool. Its October for room only. I wouldnt pay over 600 for that
Hey. I'm (hopefully) moving to greece for work soon. You mind if you could help me with apartments around the city I'll be moving to? I'd appreciate it
Do you have recommendations for good place to stay in Greece
Everything you get in Greece is kilos. Fruits, vegetables, meat, fish etc. Three major telecommunications services in Greece are Cosmote, Vodafone and Wind. Cosmote seems to be the most expensive but has the best coverage. Vodafone has some pretty good deals but you can't catch solid signal everywhere and Wind is cheaper but the least good. Of course all of them are trash compared to the ones in abroad. Yeah gas has skyrocketed. From 1.6-1.7 € per liter now over 2€. Groceries are kinda expensive if you consider that most Greeks earn like 900-1000€ on average per month. In General life has become more expensive, wages staying at the same level and unemployment is still a big problem.
Thanks for your comment GK. Great info here - Trevor
Anytime! guys. We thank you for visiting us. I hope you enjoyed your time here. You are always welcome. Have safe travels around the world.
You forgot to say that the everywhere in Greece you have telecommunications coverage even in mountains. I am living in Germany and the coverage is awful, also the signal isn’t much strong enough, not to mention if you travel on the so called autobahn or by train you don’t have even no signal.
Just returned from spending almost 7 weeks in Greece - all of August and some of September.
I bought a Cosmote SIM card with unlimited data for €12 a month!
It’s all you need when using an app to make calls and send texts.
1500 and i would live like a princess in Greece
I love how you guys keep it oh so so real. Also, your intro song is my absolute FAVOURITE! From one Canadian to another, much love
We appreciate that Sarah Jane.... and we're glad you like our intro song 🤙- Trevor
I've always wanted to go to Greece! 😍 Thanks for sharing this info about costs of being there 💛
We so hope you make it here! It's so incredible 😀 - Trevor
9:00 Any price for meat you see, will refer to kilograms.
Chicken ~4e,
Pork ~ 4-7e
Lamb and veal ~ 9-15e depending on cuts.
These are median prices, and not for prepped meat. eg chicken breasts usually go for 10e/kg but you can get the whole chicken for 4e/kg.
edit: Also for the love of Dionysus don't buy box wine!! There are several decent local wines for 5-8e/bottle. (750ml)
So good to know. Thanks 🤗 - Anna

I’m from Toronto Canada, thank you for sharing this video, it’s very helpful to understand many aspects of life in Greece. It is interesting to hear about the portions of food being so large😳. You both look like your very happy in Greece.🥰🥰🥰
Awesome. cheers!

This is one of the most beautiful islands in Greece even at that season the ocean is still nice no pool needed
Great video guys! We can't wait until we get to Greece one day :)
Thanks guys! :)
Guys in Europe we are using the metric system, there is no pound in Greece, we are using kilos.
You guys are so fun to watch...First

Thank u. V informative
Glad it was helpful!
Coming to Naxos in June with family. Very excited!
It's amazing!
Hey , getting cold back here ! Love to you

You've just beat us to it - we have our Greece cost of living video scheduled for this Sunday. We're interested to see how our costs compare to yours
haha no way?! We thought we'd try for 2 videos this week. Let's see if we can pull it off 😆 - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers we've just started on two videos a week as well. I'm sure you're a lot more efficient than us in your editing so I'm sure you'll pull it off fine 😀 no idea how the daily vloggers do it!

@@yasodhara8387 Awesome! Welcome to our channel Yaso!🤗🤗
generally the prices on the islands tend to be more expensive compared to the prices you get in the mainland ..i think it’s bc of the delivery since the goods need to be delivered by ships or cables as for electricity but some islands have their own factories that produce energy or renewable sources 😊 mostly sun/ wind. I know that bc i used to live in mainland Greece and the prices were lower there but now i am on an island for studies for like 3 years now so i have noticed that^^ anyways i hope you are enjoying your stay here !! 🏝️🇬🇷💗
Thanks so much for watching Jeddar 🤗 - Anna
Hey guys, no offense intended, but I wanted to mention that your video might not be as helpful to many people since you're not actually living in Greece, despite the title of your video. It seems like you're having an extended stay there. If anyone is genuinely interested in getting an accurate idea of the cost of living in Greece, I would recommend checking out a vlogger called "A Girl and Her Passport." She provides detailed information about the real cost of living in Greece. What you guys are doing is more like an Airbnb during the low season, which may be useful for someone planning a similar extended stay in Greece during that time. However, "living" ( given you used that word ) in Greece on a long-term basis is a whole different experience.
someone with common sense! 👍
You two look sun kissed and happy!! Excellent video! We feel Greece is very affordable. Prices have increased globally, we pay $300-$450 a month for electricity (includes our water) in Florida, love the tip on the ESim for data. Thanks for collecting all this helpful info, great job as always guys! ~Cara 💖
That's quite a bit you're paying for power in the US guys. You're right though... it's gone up everywhere - Anna
Thanks for sharing. Glad to see you guys traveling around. Any plans to go to Portugal? We moved there two years ago and really enjoy it.
Portugal is high on the list to go live in for a while yes :)
Who did you book the apartment through? We're looking at staying on Naxos as a home base and visit the other islands from there. Is this a good home base or would you recommend a different area? We're also from Canada 🇨🇦
@Cara Florida is a killer nowadays. We feel it like the rest of the world. I will check out your channel 😊 - Viviane
Thanks for watching guys - Trevor
For everyone saying its expensive, many areas; of Greece only have work 5 to 6 months of the year and if its on an island then there's additional transport costs too which obviously hike the prices up. People want guaranteed sunshine now so thw tourist season is shorter than it once was so if people want to eat souvlaki on the beach in August you will have to pay a little more to cover the the income of people who wont have a job when there are no visitors.
petrol prices when up about a year ago after the war used to be about 1.70 euro but greece is was always expencive on petrol
generally speaking living costs in mainland are way cheaper than the islands and even more so in smaller towns
What is the name of the hotel you stayed at in Naxos for the month with pool in Oct for $1500/month?
What sort of navigation aid do you use to get about if your driving?
Google Maps! on your phone :)
Ask Poseidon for his divine guidance of course
Can you use Mastercard? Do you carry Travelers Checks?
Travelers checks no. Mastercard yes (but not everywhere) 👍- Anna
If you could choose 3 islands to visit, which would you choose?
That's like picking a favourite child! 😉😜
How do you intend getting around the 90 days stay in the Schengen area in each 180 period?
We're not.. we said in a few videos now that we're maxing out those 90 days 🤗 - Anna
@@DelightfulTravellers I missed that then. I took the title of the original video to literally be about moving to Greece and thought maybe you had a clever solution for the 90 days limit in the EU/Schengen area. So you'll be back in Canada by Christmas I guess but will have had a great time in Greece.
@@DelightfulTravellers you can get a visa extension. Plus greece also offering visas for digital nomads. But the regular extension is pretty easy to get.
@@robjames4864 Remember our home is on the road (we're not on vacation). So our home is in Greece at the moment until we're no longer allowed to stay. We won't be back in Canada anytime soon :)
@@tedn6855 Yes we were looking at that. Interesting!
Did you give us a total for the month? Thank you for doing this. Well done. Cheers!
No total.. we're talking about overall costs in general. No just ours - Anna
The best Island.
What town are you in??
I am not sure if Greece in the Euro zone? But isn’t it a 90 day visa?
It's in the euro zone and yes we have 90 days here in total - Trevor
What research of any description have you done. Zero
Unfortunately, Greece prices are increasing. Small Nescafe Gold blend coffee is now over 6 euros for 100 g. Along with other foods. So don't be fooled
Hello 👋 guys 👦 💖
👋
im paying 23 euros for unlimited phonecalls and texts within the eu and 10 gb. As for gasoline, for some reason its the most expensive in europe. A year ago it was somewhere around 1.60 eur/lt
Thanks for letting us know! - Anna
Can you share the name of the place you stayed, please? Thanks
Pension Irene 2
@@DelightfulTravellers Thanks!
Why did you decide to stay here and not in Mykonos or Santorini?
Because those 2 islands specifically have way too many tourists - Anna
I would add that Mykonos and Santorini are extremely expensive. I was on both islands in September, and although beautiful it’s too expensive to stay longer than a short visit. And just like T&A mentioned lots of tourists.
1500 eus?
This is too much.
Not so many people can effort it!
70 euro for electric bill? That is nothing. In Norway we pay plus minus 400for 1 month.
Who sings the intro song
A band called Loving Caliber - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers thank you
and the average local person is earning 800-1000 euros a month....rentals prices have sadly out-priced so many locals because of airbb and short term rentals....
Sadly you could say this about hundreds of places in the world. Our city in Canada has a MAJOR housing crisis with some of the lowest wages in the country but some of the highest rental prices.
How long did it take you to learn to speak Greek?
We can't speak Greek
@Delightful Travellers Is English widely spoken there?
€2.20 for 95 octane petrol is expensive.. I think it's probably a little cheaper on mainland Greece , I am from Cyprus , petrol here is about €1.53 a litre, and yes, all of Europe is metric.
Best wishes from Cyprus 🇨🇾 🇬🇷🙂🙂👋👋
I wonder why gas is so much cheaper there? - Trevor
@@DelightfulTravellers mainly higher vat enforced by EU after greek bailout by EU , 24 % I believe..
🤔
Petrol prices had gone down quite a fair bit. Petrol prices as of now in Athens is about €1.80 while in Crete cost only about 10cts more.
Before the war in Ukraine the gas price was about 1,70 per Liter
Seems the gas price hikes are happening worldwide that's for sure - Trevor
In islands gas or Benzin prices was always higher than from mainland Greece, but not over 2€/liter
That's so expensive. It's proper tourist rip off. You could rent villa with swimming pool for that money 😂

🤙
prices in greece 99% of times is per kilo pork is really cheap beef is bit expensive checken is cheap Ashwell
I’d like to rent a modest house in a village on Crete. Just for 30-45 days. Live in silence. Goats and chickens roaming around. Just a place to disappear to for a long stay.
That sounds pretty amazing tbh - Trevor
Greece doesn't have fast Internet. It's the second slowest in the whole of Europe
you can live way cheaper!! hotel.. useless.. even with a pool - you can find cheaper. food.. same.. it is nice when tourists explain for their fellows at home.. but for me it‘s just amusing when foreigner wants to explain another country.. anyway.. it’s a start..
thats ridiculously expensive
Your paying a tremendous amount of money just for rent
You lived very expensive. There is simular places for 800 .
We’d love to know where? Feel free to send us examples. This place had a pool, kitchen, separate bedroom, was in town and 5 minute walk to the beach. And we only rented it for a month (not a long term lease)..
1 eu does not equal 1 usd.... !?!?!?!?!
It did last year when we filmed this. Just so you know, currencies fluctuate!
