Well, finally a channel for us slide players! Just been listening to Kelly Joe these days, amazing tone and voice. You should check out Chris Whitley and John Campbell if you haven't already. Also, could you make a guide to getting that aggressive modern slide tone that is all over your videos? Cheers mate
Kelly Joe, is awesome isn't he! I hadn't heard of either of those two guys, so thanks for the heads up. I'm immediately digging what, Chris Whitley is all about. I'm going to do a video soon of a drive pedal that I use for absolutely everything, the Barber Small Fry Burn Unit. It's pretty much my sound in a box. It's pretty similar to the thing Lee Roy Parnell, supposedly uses and he gets a great slide sound. Thanks for the comment mate, Ben.
Seeing that you have so many Canadians on your list, you've likely heard of Ian Thornley from Big Wreck. He doesn't play slide often, once or twice per album, but I dig his playing and the band is phenomenal! Under the Lighthouse is one of my favorite Big Wreck songs with slide.
Yeh, great player. There's some nice videos of his solo stuff on the Suhr channel. I don't think I'd heard of him when I made this video though. I also hadn't noticed the number of Canadian players and didn't realise he was one of them. Thanks for the comment, Ben.
Check out Jack Pearson if you don’t know him. He played the Duane Allman parts for the Allman Brotaqhers for a couple years in late 90’s but now just plays around Nashville and is the guitar player locals tell visitors to see, There’s a great Jack Pearson playlist at Miles of Entertainmaent channel and he’s in their video called “Slide Guitar-Top 20 Best of the Best.”
Yeh he's a great player. Good understanding of jazz vocabulary too. Check out the video of him and Roy Hoffman jamming, pretty mesmerizing stuff. Cheers, Ben.
I’m new to slide so I will check your list out. I’m trying to re ignite my passion for guitar again and I would like to try my hand at slide. I ordered a Rock slide glass slide today. I was wondering, do you mainly use standard slide tuning? I am inspired by your slide work 🙏
Hi mate, some great players in this list I'm sure it'll inspire you. I play mainly standard, as that way I can just play it in any song when doing a gig. I also play in open G, I find it gives me a more rootsy sound for some things. There are great players that play in standard and open tunings, so both are useful. Thanks for the compliment, Ben.
Saw Greg Leisz twice in the last couple of years with Jackson Browne, once as a duo and once with the full band, Amazing! And I thought I heard some Kirk Lorange in your style (meant as a compliment). Great players!
Wow awesome! I think the 1st time I heard slide guitar, was in Jackson Browne records. Thank you, that is a compliment he's a great player. I haven't copied any lines per se, but I remember when 1st looking for slide players he came up on UA-cam years ago, but has disappeared a bit in recent years. Certainly never comes up in my suggested listings now anyway. I definitely took the concept of fretting behind the slide from him and Sonny (who is a massive influence). Ben
@@BenFletcherGuitar I think it's the feel you and Kirk L have in common. So good! And David Lindley's stuff on Jackson's early records is still a huge influence on me. Perfect notes, perfect tone.
Great video...I went to see Steve Vai at Lynard Skynyrds club in Jax Fl and Eric Sardinas was the opening act...I was completely blown away by this guy...He was like the voodoo witch doctor from some Cajun swamp possessed by the spirit of Hendrix playing a National Resonater guitar with Marshall amps, fuzz face and wah pedals...I've never heard anything like it ever...Inspired me to pick up a slide to try and capture some of that mojo in my guitar playing...Don't really like the indian influence I hear in a lot of slide players, reminds me of those kazoos that my kids play driving me crazy...
Aubrey Ghent / Derek Trucks comment… absolutely can you hear the influence. I love Mr Trucks but I must confess, never heard of Aubrey til just now. Must go listen some more methinks!
@@BenFletcherGuitar You're no slouch either Ben ! Love your playing too. I was given an old 10 string lapsteel by a chap I worked with doing tree surgery. He always wanted an electric guitar so he could be the next Hank Marvin but his Dad was into country so that's what he got 😂Subsequently it sat in his barn for 40yrs. It was covered in straw and bird shit but with a good few hours spent, it's cleaned up lovely and the original P90 style pup still sounds great. The foot pedals and the knee pedal all works too.
@@SONGSTICKS Thanks man, appreciated! Haha, what kind of music do you want to learn to play son, Country or Western?! Hi there, thanks for the comment. There's no 'error' as the title of my video says great players, not greatest. For instance I mention Sylvester Weaver, not because he's the best, but because he was the first to be recorded. So not an error so much as an omission. I appreciate English is not your first language though, I couldn't begin to hold a conversation in any other language, so fair play to you. Roy Rodgers is excellent, I've seen him before, very good at getting a vintage type sound. Ben.

I didn't think anybody would sit through such a long list! You're right, both great players of course. Sonny Landreth was the 1st person I saw doing the fretting behind the slide thing, which blew my mind. It's where I believe Joey took inspiration and his band mate, Ariel Posen, who's also a good slide player. I'd never heard of Chris Whitley, until Wew mentioned him in the comments below.
Not many people know about Earl Hooker anymore, even less David Hole - who plays slide guitar in a uniquely different way!
