Nathaniel Murphy @ZeppelinBarnatra is one of my favorite guitar players around today, so when I got to stop by @chicagomusicexchange I had to hear him play one of the most unique guitars I've ever heard, a 1964 Gibson Dove B-Bender.
Thanks to @MichaelWWestbrook for filming! Follow him via the link.

Thanks so much to Rhett and the guys. Was a pleasure and an honor to play and hang out. I’m also blown away by the lovely comments from you all. Thanks so much folks
I just subscribed to your channel. That was awesome.
Listening to you with that Dove reminded me of my dad. He played for around 60 years & would often just sit in his music room playing different songs, guitars, arrangements for the pure joy of it. Thank you!
Awesome player man. Followed you on Insta for a good while now. Also awesome surname 😉
Legend
Your rendition of Kashmere.? 🤯
Stunning!
I lost my husband in1987 to a cardiac arrest but he played to me every night. He went to HS in Madrid and he began playing there. I swear he could do almost anything with a Guitar and had a Les Paul. Loved this video and I was in that shop in Chicago. Thanks guys. I’m 78 now and miss this.
what a great memory you have.
Loving, fond memories - the best there is. They remain with us forever.
All the best to you Patricia.
Thanks everyone. Those guys were and are great!!!
Patricia,
He's built your new house. And he's waiting for you there. Sitting on the porch with his guitar. To play you some beautiful new stuff he's learned.
Everything happens for a reason. And when you get there, he'll be right there waiting. So don't be sad. He doesn't want to look down and see you sad. So smile for him. Smile because you know you'll see him again! I love you Patricia. And that love will get you home to your husband.

Beautifully written and so happy to receive your message. Thank you beyond my words.
Wow, that acoustic of Kashmir was just astounding.
Check out Marcin. Acoustic master. His version of Kashmir is really unbelievable.
Man it truly blew me away! Took me a minute to figure out the mechanics because I dropped in the video during that song. What a bitchin guitar and an amazing arrangement!
Yes, loved that.
Wow. What a talent.
The guitarist of Led Zep would be so impressed.
I’m in a rough place right now. Won’t go into it but hearing Nathaniel play those tunes got me feeling alive today and brought healing. It’s an honour to watch mastery like that.
Just saw your post and felt compelled to let you know you are not alone. Just wanted you to know.
Hang in there Curtisunit and you too Debra Martin
Thanks for the nod! Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
Hope you’re better mate. Glad the music helped 🙏
Same. This session felt like home. A summer long gone. Just hanging out with your best buddy and trying to pick these tunes together
I am such a huge fan of Nathaniel's. That was the coolest arrangement of Kashmir I have ever heard!
Jaw dropping.
How is Nathaniel not HUGE on UA-cam already?
the Percussion IS insane
I swear I heard a looper. Just amazing 🤩
that playing blew my mind i knew he was good but holy shit. i feel like a beginner all over lol
Oh my sweet Lord, that Dove and Nathaniel Murphy's playing and arrangements are, well, like a religious experience, they're so heavenly.
Nathaniel, your version of Kashmir makes my soul fly. You should be playing on the world stage. I'm not a country guy, but your "country" rendition of "In My Life" is incredible. Thank you.
You should take a look at Michael Shulman's version.
In my life is country?😂
It always depends on the musician.
rythm part of the song?i didn´t remenber it by being kashmir ,i have the kashmir album but the song with that name came in other record didn´t it?i know the rythm it´s been used on jamiroquai song from godzilam movie where he fakes to dance on top of the backrest of a cinema´s chairs
Heard (and seen footage) Beatles playing around w/ a little bit of Country.
"In My Life" and "Kashmir" as I've never heard it before on acoustic guitar...nor ever will again. Simply beautiful, man.
Anyone know who the English guy is? Does he have his own channel?
@@collintinwauld4931 His name is Nathaniel Murphy and type his name in the UA-cam search box...it'll pop up with all types of vids covering all types of music. He's very gifted.
Yeah a little pedal steel behind the acoustic wold be way cool on "In my life"
Also, "Kashmir" just listened to that bit...jeezus how much is going on here? Only need cymbals between his legs! Gifted
@@brainscott8198 cheers for that Brian. 👍
I'm 70 and have been playing guitar in bar bands since age 15. Enjoyed watching these youngsters having fun. Thanks.
Playing the rhythm, the melody, some base note knocks, AND some percussion all at one time and with just his two hands and a guitar - incredible!
I think that was about the MOST fun I've ever had watching a few masters dink around, learn something new, play some vintage craft and better yet - share it with us lowly serfs who play guitar and admire the players. While we play guitar, these guys are guitar players and for those who don't know the difference, finding out would be a huge step upward in your library of understanding and appreciation of the art. That was most excellent. I could only imagine an entire afternoon of this dreamscape and will often reflect on this very moment as i humble myself again. Thank you fellas ! A heartfelt thanks !
So well said. This one really grabbed my undivided attention, and was a real treat to watch & listen. To me, this is truly what makes the world go ‘round. Tip of a the hat, to them.
Much appreciation for Rhett’s ability to make this connection happen. Love his genuine care for all things guitar. And Nathaniel is just an other-worldly talent disguised as a normal bloke from Manchester. Unbelievable!
Indeed! And very generous of Rhett to give such un-edited air time to others on channel.
This is the truely lovely side of YT.
It feels like a privilege to be able to hear someone that good playing... Internet is amazing thing. Thank you for filming it. :)
Totally!! 🍻✌️
Best guitar store video I've watched.
They often refer to this playing as "a gift". It's more hard work, dedication to perfection, and love of music & instruments. Someone record this talented humble musician. His personality is icing on the cake.
I love how humble Nathaniel is after playing such an amazing version of Kashmir.
What’s a Kashmir?
It's the song Kashmir from Led Zeppelin
That B-bender sounds amazing! Nathaniel's playing of In my Life and Kashmir made my jaw drop. Simply beautiful playing, what a treat to listen to. Thanks for posting this Rhett.
Lets take a moment to appreciate that Nathaniel does both tunes perfectly in one shot…
Yes, agreed. A rare sight indeed. There's many thousands of hours of practice behind that playing and possibly hundreds on those pieces of music. What a gift and a great commitment to the craft.
Yeah.. that is pretty incredible when you think about it. Also just off the cuff, like.. ‘let’s just do this right now’ and flawless. Been following this guy on Insta for a long time. He’s in a class of his own.
@@JulesFox lllllll
And the can of dip in Michael's pocket.
And after he says "I've made a fool of myself" lol that slayed me when he said that!
59 years fo playing guitar. When I heard this my eyeballs fell out. Beautiful!
Hope you weren't a sight reader...
@@randymeyer6482 Nope, everything by ear.
@@stevelewis468 nice...I can't do either...
This guy needs a well produced instrumental album. I’d listen non stop for months.
Nathanial’s talent is breathtaking. Such an amazing musician.
Dude...your version of Kashmir around 13:00 is incredible. What a gift you have
Thank you for pointing that timestamp out. I bounced around the video a bit and would have prolly missed it.
isn't a weird tuning does he play it in standard?
It's just flat out nuts... killer at absolute worst. I wish I had 1/100 of that talent...OK, 1/1,000.
No no. This isnt his version of Kashmir. Marcin, a polish guitar prodigy blew the lid off of this here on youtube years ago. Look him up.
@@percyvolnar8010 Those are not exactly the same versions between the two men. But because he used that guitar you think he owns the song now.
No, that is the one thing it certainly is, his own version. That goes for both of them. I suspect what you meant to say is " it is a version of Marcin.s version" And maybe it is true, but we would need to ask him what inspired him, was it Marcin who inspired him, or was it the guitar, the original artist, or a combination of two or more of the three.
This guy is a monster player, been noticing his arrangements and chord melody's for a while...🤘😎
I so agree with you!
I remember writing him off as just another dude, then listened to him again hours later and fell in love.
That Kashmir rendition was freakin awesome man. That's the shit I'm talking bout! Different tunings, mechanical and electrical aids keeping us all inspired! Just like the playing of others. We all contribute to the art and passion. An endless journey of learning, sharing and creating. Straight from the heart. Thanks for your inputs brother. Blessings!
I find it amazing how each person plays his interpretation of these guitars. Thanks gentlemen.
just happened onto this video by luck and was pleasantly surprised. The dude playing Kashmir on the acoustic was phenomenal! Always great to hear someone playing a Zeppelin tune, good.
Those versions of "In My Life" and "Kashmir" were absolutely insane on the Acoustic B-Bender!
Glorious! It sounded like he played every instrument in the song! My late brother left his Les Paul to my youngest son and it is beautiful and wonderful to listen to!
@@lindahandley5267 Totally takes next level skills to play like this. Dude is amazing.
@@sn4rl277 For sure. What a gift to be able to create such a beautiful sound. You sure have to be dedicated and practice a lot to get to that level and develop your own signature style. I love the look on a guitarist's face when they zone out. 😊
@@lindahandley5267 Yes, I like when they are just feeling it and don't have to even look at their hands. It's like another language that once you get it, it just flows so well.
@@sn4rl277 When my son plays, it's like he's almost in a trance. I wish I had that ability. Enjoy your day! 😉
The best rendition of Led Zeppelin on acoustic guitar I have ever heard unbelievable. And you could hear the voice parts in there, too. That was so sweet.
I love Rhett’s expression after Nathaniel finishes playing “In My Life”. That smile says, “Did you really just casually drop that on me like that?”. Great video, Rhett. Really enjoyed this one! 🥰
WOW!! Nathaniel is an amazing player!!!! That’s not enough to even touch the surface of describing his talent!!! I’ve been playing for around 45 years and have never been this blown away by another guitarist!!! Nathaniel, you made my day!!! Cheers!!!
Take a look at "Kashmir" from Ben Lacy - live in Nashville. Nathaniel plays on a level, far away. Ben - no words...(unreachable, should not be used, but you must TRY, TRY, TRY and TRY!)
Curious if you've had an opportunity to hear
Tommy Emmanuel,
Phil Keaggy,
Doyle Dykes,
Fingerstyle champion Steven King,
"Ben Lacey plays for phil" ?
12:42 The way he plays Kashmir...Chords and Vocals at the same time was AMAZING
I agree! ... and you may also like "Pickin' on Zep". The disc with the blue blimp on it. I did.
@@432b86ed Great. I like this instrumental versions. Going To California was nice!
Yeah he really kills Kashmir. Awesome rendition of a very hard song to play - even without the percussion attributes he added.
If you like that,,, you may like Kent Nishimora.... He will amaze you
@@rjb10101 wow my brain cant realize how he can play Bass Drums Guitar and Vocals with 2 hands lol. awesome
This is one of the most profound guitar moments of my life. I have heard virtuosity and genius and a person is never really the same afterwards.
I would have never expected a B-bender to sound so natural in an acoustic. I love that little pedal thing he was playing. Very nice.

"It's amazing when you think of the kind of talented musicians that exist all over this world ...and you never know when or where you'll find them!!" That's a hard fact I realized years ago. The really best musicians are unknown and have never had much exposure.
the last I heard anything similar to that, was as a kid and the player was late middle age hillbilly picker, he bent the strings around wildly. I to this day don't know how he did it without any trick devices. must have had fingers of stone, with feel of a baby.
@@marcos061059 Hey! In HISTORY, i agree completly. Today - THAT's the reason why i am HERE! To search LIVE, UNDERRATED, SURPRISING MEETINGS, UNARRANGED JAM's; RARE RECORDS!

I bet even Jimmy Page would be blown away by that version of Kashmir. OMG.
Mind blowing

Jimmy page 😅?
I cried when he played the Beatles. What a beautiful guitar and melody. Wow!!
Amazing Kashmir cover. I like the tapping percussion he weaved into the mix. Great timing.
Truly excellent individual jam session, guys. I don't hear guys jammin Zeppelin much any more, and I love it.
I couldn't help but literally applaud after that version of "In My Life," at Nathan, who's on my laptop in my living room. So dang good.
Ive rewatched that part about 30x now

What an amazing guitarist this gentleman is. Incredible talent.
Thanks man
That B-bender version of Kashmir was just nuts!!! LOVE it!😍👍

First of all I have never seen a B bender on an acoustic guitar, second, DAMN!! That guy is just amazing! Now I am off to search Nathaniel Murphy! How cool.
Tapping isn't new, but there's not usually alotta melody. This guy's got 3 lines going. & percusion with a flawless melody thru out. Great show mate !
Wow, Nathaniel is a great guitarist, and I’m so impressed with his rendition of Kashmir.
Awesome. The guitar is such a fantastic instrument for self expression.
When Nathaniel is playing by am constantly smiling and sometimes cracking up at just the sheer absurdity of his brilliant statements.
Blown away by these guys just casually playing in the freaking basement of CMX. Fantastic! Made my Monday.
Nathanael is just a killer player. The B bender was awesome.
A magical moment, for sure....Thanks for sharing this.
If you’re a guitarist, then you know how well that acoustic sample was executed.
Yes.
Like he said he'z 'badass'!
What???
That version of In My Life was just amazing!! Beautiful playing
Just absolutely magnificent. I see all you guys on tour together bringing the love of guitar to the people, who at this time of complete lunacy need badly. I'm serious to listen how you guys just played impromptu, I could only imagine what you could do rehearsing. You have the ability to bring the people back to there inner soul away from this madness!
Wow is not even enough praise to express what a gift and talent this guy has 🎸
Thanks for the inspiration to just keep playing
I want at least 5 to 10 albums only with your acoustic covers and own compositions. i could watch this 1000 times
I'm no where near the expertise and quality of musicians that I've watched, but more importantly heard here. I'm absolutely amazed at these professionals' versatility, comradery, and the eagerness to LEARN more of their craft from each other. This is sooooo important to performance and to the expression each individual's styles. Masters all. Thanks for sharing guys.
Thanks, virtuoso guys, for letting us share your joy in great luthiers’ art. Especially the end, with the acoustic guitar you all loved. Me, too - We used to call them Hummingbirds. People like you (and Renaissance composers long before us), are why I “graduated” to the guitar, when time constraints made me put aside my fiddle, for lack of practice. At 73, my fingers are now too stiff to perform, but I still keep my old Silvertone in tune, and occasionally pull it out for a few chords, riffs, and memories.
(I’ve been watching a lotta Stochelo, and Rosenberg Trio, lately, just for some calm in the storm…)
That dude is the MAN. Honest to God, what a player. Just makes my heart fly to see anyone that inspiringly talented.
Same thing here!
I'm not a guitar player or do I play any instrument.
Truly my biggest regret in my life.... not being involved in music in some capacity.
I find it so cool to sit down with other creative people that can play these instruments well and just picking each other's heads on new ways to play in different sounds.
What an awesome gift and talent to have.
Awesome video !
Thank you
You say that like the opportunity has passed you. Start tomorrow. Sure, you're going to get discouraged at times, but anything worth doing makes us a bit nauseous at times. Every day I dig for the courage to carry forward against the punishing gravity of hopes and dreams versus reality. By the way, I have been playing guitar for going on 40 years. Even if you were an accomplished musician, you still wouldn't be satisfied. Humans aren't hardwired for satisfaction.
Now where was I? Oh yeah, pancakes... maybe a quiche.
Never too late to start
If a 10 year old can master in 5 years you can do it after 30 or 40 . Just devote yourself to the instrument.
As a seasoned listener, you bring the energy and love to those who play.
Rhett always surprises me. I was a die hard metal head for a long time and thanks to him I have moved well beyond that.
I'm still gathering my jaw off of the floor. The work on the SG, and then just into outer space on that acoustic B bender. The man can jam! Some people get put off by great players... it's one in the morning and I want to wake the neighbours up!! That was super inspiring.
I feel EXACTLY the same! I suddenly just wanted to share this with everyone one I know RIGHT NOW! haha
Those people that don't like to hear the words , guy was a great guitar player.or girl, are those freaking jealous types I've dealt with my whole life and all i eevt wanted to do was my best and inspire someone else maybe and if I noticed someone on the same level talent wise as myself I would get real pleased because I knew that I could finally challenge myself to the fullest and see just how good I actually was. Loved it and had nothing but respect and love for other "naturals"
Wow, incredible playing! His articulation in dynamics are unreal.
Thank you guys I just love guitar I’ve been playing for sixty years and never get tired of it . I mean I burn out once every ten or twelve years. But I still love the shred. Thank you. Robert H.
Wow, Nathaniel is really great to watch and listen to, thanks alot dear Rhett for introducing him, also what a unique Gibson this is, just love it 🙂
That was one of the best solo arrangements of Kashmir I've ever seen and heard. He should seek more acclaim for his work making it. Record it, or video it for himself to upload to his name.
Seriously. Holy cow that was cool.
amazing
super!
He kinda does. He has a UA-cam channel. Been on Chicago Music Exchange a bit. 100% agreed though, man needs some traction!!
Don't wanna ruin the party but there's a guy named Marcin on here that's been doing this version since March 2021.
I wish I can watch David Gilmour picking up this guitar( the acoustic) and playing it. You guys are masters of the guitar I settle with what I hear from your playing. Thank you for showing what you guys can do with those guitars, especially, the acoustic. Just fantastic!
I can close my eyes it's not so much the song...no matter what genre it's the complete sound of the guitar! Something about that sound. For all the reason your playing and searching for the one. I close my eyes and it brings me back to family jams in the large kitchen built for however many could pack in. Summer nights, smell of fresh cut grass. We chased fire Flys being serenaded by the sound of less Paul, Gibson. Thank you for bringing me along. Best gift ever!!! 😊 ❤
Even accomplished Guitar players are fascinated when a real "officianodo" takes to the strings!
My sainted mother was an accomplished Pianist in her youth. People would stop to listen when she sat down at the keyboard. She was a Chopin fan and, in my memories, I can still hear her playing.
Nathaniel, you have the ear, the touch and the sensibilities of a star. Your arrangements are a pure wonder! I hope you do an album of songs with your B-Bender enhanced arrangements.
Nathaniel is definitely a monster guitar player who just makes it look easy!
Man what a treat, I have a huge smile, thank you for sharing the sublime playing!!!
Nathaniel, your playing is on a different level. You're Becklike. I've never heard someone sitting jamming play with that depth and color. And that version of Kashmir is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Thank you.
I had chills while they were playing. I wish I could have experienced it live.
The Zep w/ the B-bender acoustic is SO freakin cool. Love it!
That postionally pitch changing guitar is nuts. I'll bet the guy that worked up that mechanism had to think about it a while. Really cool. Don't let Tommy Emanuel see that thing. He might make you an offer you can't refuse if he liked it. :-)
Some very nice playing, BTW. Fun to watch.
Id "b"e surprised if TE hasn't played one. He is very well travelled. I do wonder what he would do with it, no doubt.
I just found a new guitar hero. Absolutely incredible playing by Nathaniel.
I find it amazing that the guitar itself doesn't lose the intonation while being used with the "B bender". So cool to see on an acoustic.
Wow. That was a gorgeous country rendition of "In My Life". So glad I was able to catch it. Thanks so much.

That is easily the most incredible guitarist I’ve ever heard and seen. No one beats him. Just amazing.
And what is mind boggling is that he can play any genre of music with so much virtuosity. You can check in instagram and have your mind blown. To me this guy is right there along with Guthrie Govan.
What a pleasure to hear that vintage Gibson acoustic in the hands of a really fine player, In My Life was incredible.
