How are you doing today my friend? I want to thank you for your videos. I have stage 4 lung cancer and I have refused all treatment ( which I am glad I did because chemo destroys your immune system ). Anyway I was told I was going to be dead the first week of last January. So much for my problems, I am only 59 years old and I really enjoy your playing and watching your videos. Thank you for taking me away for a little while with each video. Stay safe and be truly thankful for your friends and family.
I am an old drummer. Set out to learn guitar when I retired. Something to keep my mind and hands active. So at 67 I picked it up and almost immediately discovered John Fahey, Jack Rose and American Primitive. Now, almost two years later, I play everything that I can play (which isn’t really much😂) in open C, open D and open G. Sometimes change D to D minor. At times mess with DADGAD. Can add a capo here and there. I can’t really play “standard” tuning at all. And that’s ok. The real secret is spending a year working on the thumb. It’s all in the thumb. 😬. Thanks for this video. I’m a huge fan. I watch all your stuff and have benefited greatly from it!!
I got his shovel slide guitar. If you want something fun to play with, that's it. I'm never gonna perform, so I don't care about sounding like a Nashville studio pro. I just get a kick out of messing around with it and slowly learning a few new things along the way. Just muting behind the slide, takes care of so much buzzing and harsh metallic noise......Nice vid. more to learn :)
Hey! Long time player here and I just recently got into open tunings and using a slide, I love it, and this video is amazing! Thank you for the much needed motivation! Thanks!
I'm an older guy. And, I've gone through several times in my life where I've tried to learn guitar. I just never get very far. My brain isn't equipped for it. I'm amazed at guys who are proficient at one tuning. But to be able to master all these -- man, you must be a genius!
Fiddlesticks. What you need are lots of finger drills and three chords for strumming. I was like that when the pando started. Now.. Im better than i think :)
Fiddlesticks. You got the same I-IV-V frets on the fretboard in each open tuning. Then you check whether the 6 or 5 string is the bass root. But even that's the same patterns, just offset by one string up or down. Then as far as the upper strings... well that's as far as I've gotten, but I just wanted to say I'm not daring someone else to mention the name for the 3rd time in this comment thread, but I'm not NOT daring them, if you know what I mean.
I learned a lot. I like that 70% of them don't increase the tension, and I can definitely see how these would open new avenues and make slide playing easier. Thanks much, and thumbs up to crush a troll.
Thanks for the breakdown. I’ve been wanting to learn a new tuning but I’ve been putting it off because I didn’t want to waste time in a tuning only to change my mind. Getting to hear a good demo in every tuning saved me tons of time. Thank you
I recently started trying to learn slide guitar and I was the same way, I mostly like to play just E standard but sometimes E flat. At first I just tried to play slide guitar without learning anything at all about it, I just thought I could figure it out, it cannot be that much different than playing with a pick. After a while I came to the conclusion that my progress was non existent and my guitar was begging me to stop playing because it was ashamed of the sound that it was making. Tuning it to Open G put my progress back on the road again and now that I have played a little bit I think I could adjust to other tunings as well. Great video, the part in the beginning really struck home with me because that was exactly my mind set, I did not want to retune any of my guitars but after hearing the part in the beginning about how Justin was resistant to change but made the move that was more than enough for me to try open G, great lessons and advice on this channel and incredible guitar playing, I have seen lots of great slide players but was never motivated to learn it myself until I saw the Crankin up the 3 string shovel guitar video, such a great song with so few elements!
I have been playing 2 nylon string guitars almost everyday for about 7 years. 2 weeks ago i picked up a Guild A-20 dedicated to open slide tunings. After hearing how amazing the A-20 sounds in regular tuning and feeling like I need 1 steal string guitar for standard I again found myself at the guitar stores. I used to play open tuning slide about 10 years ago and watching you play the slide has made me feel home sick. I just picked up a new Martin X1AE dedicated for slide open tunings (I've always wanted a Martin). This Martin dreadnought (it's sitting in my lap while I type this) with heavy strings is an absolute beast (explosive sound!). I have watch you play for a couple years now and you are an amazing slide player and a huge inspiration for me. This video came to me at a perfect time. Thank you for creating this content Justin🤙😎
Justin the most important thing about your videos , is how your love of music and the guitar shines through. You really are having the time of your life . I'm telling all my friends about you here in the UK. You are, in my opinion , a guitar legend ! you are my new Nils lofgren !
I’ve heard you play many times, and very much enjoyed hearing you talk about it! Another dimension to hear the voice behind the music! Awesome teaching. Thanks Bro!
Nice Justin. I've been playing slide myself for over 30 years. My favorie tuning for slide is Open E. Robert Johnson is truly a great but many people dont realize before Robert Johnson there was Charlie Paton. He was Native American!
Going to the trouble of explaining all the little subtleties and reasons for different tunings can put one on the right track, so to speak, for them...for life. Much appreciated, thanks man.
Having just really started slide, played the mouth harp bending notes (cross harp) Playing blues with the best , this slide guitar open turning is phenomenal playing by ear is a twist... Thanks...jj... Just miles.
Justin I can't think you enough finally in my later years I'm getting to put the guitar music and doing the melodies as I want... To my personal. Lyerics not withstand the influencers empathetic guide.... Thankfully the influencing factor are indeed a spiritualawaking... .m.
Just going to add, that this explanation of slide tunings was clear enough I found it very helpful. So I went and looked at the lessons in the Justin Johnson store and ended up buying a package. Right out of the gate in the Slide Fundamentals video the information helped me immensely. I had no idea how many things I have been doing wrong, and how much positioning etc... were causing so many problems in my sound. I've been playing guitar for a very long time, but I never focused on slide until now. Thanks Justin, those "small" basic tips really helped me out. I have some work to do now to overcome bad technique and instill proper technique, but already I'm improved and I have no problem putting in the work, I just needed a starting point. Thanks much.
Man, I've been listening to your music for a while now and today I bought my first slide. I won't lie, I was already dreading learning different tunings, but I saw this video. Thank you. You explained open tunings in a way that I'm actually understanding. Oh, it was the swamp blues on the fretless guitar that got me watching you. You really are an amazing guitarist.
I've been following Justin's playing for 3or4 years now. he inspired me to build my first three string cbg in which Bud Eldridge bought from me.justin thanks for the ways you explain notes and cord's.you are an inspiration to all
Hey Justin! This has been so helpful and enlightening for me. Thank you so much for sharing your secrets with us. I learn more from you in 1/2 hour than I have in years of muddling around by myself! You are an amazing teacher. And you stand alone amongst the greats as a player
I've hit on all these tunings over lets say the last 50yrs 😆 you bring all of them to light for the novice beginners and old dudes like me who in hiatus of 20 plus years pickingit back up slower mind you but really gives a tutorial to reference to kudos Justin thanks so much bro😁👍🇺🇸🎸
I'm in the same boat, brother. Never took formal lessons, interrupted by a decade in the infantry, alcohol and life. I picked it back up over 2 years ago and stumbled across Mr Johnson. Definitely in a language I can speak. Lol
Thanks Justin, allways loved slide but couldn't quite get it, but you have inspired me to keep at it ,and now I entertain myself with getting some cool sounds, gotta long way to go , but I'm enjoying the journey.. all the best in 24.
Yes! I bought a slide a week ago and everyone said open e was best to learn and while I tried that led zeppelin tunes taught me about open g and when I tried that I was able to come up with 5 minutes of material right off the bat it was crazy. I love your playing style and it makes me feel a bit more at home knowing a pro chose the same tuning that I just as a rookie flat out guessed it was gonna work
Thank you. You are a great teacher! Learning slide has opened up a whole new world on guitar for me. Just watching and listening to you play has been a big help. Again. Thank you.
Always love your playing but more importantly you're a great teacher. Seen many great guitar players who can't pass on what they know or explain it in a way the average Joe can grasp. Huge cigar box fan. Thanks Man!
That G Hybrid is a G6 tuning. The E on top makes it a 6th. And the “Drop High G” is also called Reverse Drop D, Faux or Fake G, and (best of all!) the Memphis Minnie Tuning. Extremely useful and easy. One of my personal faves.
Justin you are the most amazing guitar player I've ever heard! You make everything seem so easy. I would love to be able to play just about anything that sounds good. Lol
I really dig going open G only with A on 2. I can't find a name for it and idk if it's a chord but I love the sound for picking, and it gives you some of those vestapol riffs on the high strings
This was very helpful and insightful. Everything was well explained and ironed out conceptually...can't wait to mess with all of these ideas as a noob to slide playing
I kept hearing "Vigilante Man" when you were in Open D...as a newcomer to slide this video was a great help, thanks! you got yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you so much! This couldn't gave come at a better time....last week I started having some tingling in my fingers and now I'm afraid I have carpal tunnel....my left hand is very weak and I can't play at all.....I did find that I can get away with a little slide for maybe 10 minutes or so......thank you!
Thanks, Justin, you are the contemporary High Priest of Dark Blues :-) That video is a very, very good instruction to understand guitar slide and to try it by myself. I hope I will succeed a little.
at the end of your open D jam, I was like, "damn, dude goes hard!" We are all incredibly fortunate to have someone so sickeningly good at guitar making instructional vids for us. Thanks for doing it!
You intimidated me a lot with this. I am just a regular guy, but I decided to go with the Open D-tuning as to me it sounded the best. Your playing in E for example sounded a little hectic for what I am looking for in Blues. So thank you man for a great lesson. Taught me a load of things and I wish I can apply them. Greetings from Finland! ...and keep up the nice work. You truly are a master at what you do!
I recently acquired a 4 string cbg. I want to experiment combining various tunings for slide as you explained in your video. I will be purchasing a 4 string double neck to combine these tunings. Thank you, Dan
Another great video Justin. I would call this one “reference material”. I’ll go back to it often as I experiment with these open tunings. Right now I’m really getting into open Em. I love that mixing Em pentatonic riffs with the drone on the lower strings. I liked and subscribed on this one. A good vid for sure!
Thanks Justin. This video was an eye opener for me. I have avoided open tunings for the most part, and this video helped me to understand how that has humstrung my playing. Much Appreciated.
Wow thank you. A little history of me. My instrument of choice is harmonica. I dabbled with guitar. I recently cut off part of my left index finger so I can't cord like I used to. So. It's slide time. I also bought a Gretch Alligator. What you have just shown in this video has given me hope. Thank you again.
An incredible player! A musical genius. Been my favourite player for this style of music for quite a while. As this video shows, Justin's also a great teacher.
Thanks bro!!! Your just the inspiration I was needing to get back into my music!!! I thank you, my family thanks you, and you have a true God sent talent!
Nice video. Sounds so good at 15:40 with your Open Em . I think Open G and Open A are the same relative tuning and have a minor 3rd on the high 2 strings ... Open D and open E are the same relative and have a major 5th on the high 2 string . I find Minor 3rd is more of country sound. Major 5th is more of a harder rock and blues sound.

I like how comfortable he is in all of these alternate tunings. Awesome slide guitarist, best I've heard.
I've just discovered the magic of different tunings and then here you come giving me a guide to TEN of them!!! Thank you, Justin!
Well? How has that been going?

I'm a simple man. I see a Justin Johnson video. I thumbs up before it even begins.
That E minor tuning is what I've been looking for, thankyou.
Thank you JJ- I have always struggled with alternate tunings, being self-taught. This vid is pure gold. Stay safe brother. Cheers.

By far the best video online for open tuning and slide, love the hybrid tunings and the concise reasons behind why one or the other. Cool!
I've had a resonator in my bucket list for years. You've inspired me to finally order one and get into open/hybrid finger picking. Thanks Justin

You are a great musican, with open mind.i am beginner with slide.use to play standard, the best for me 3 guitars on differents tuning
Fantastic video. Sooo much to learn! Thanks Justin.
Wow! Clarified so much...opened my ear/eyes. Thanks Justin °
Thank you for sharing all this wisdom Justin
By far the best info I’ve found on UA-cam
Open D is the only one I’ve worked in. But I’m going to have a go at G this afternoon after watching this. Thanks.
Wowser Wowser. I love it and I'm a beginner my whole life playing.
This video is a real gift. thank you!
Your slick dude, and inspiring for sure, now I gotta go pound out some blues...and head for the crossroads!!
Thank you so much for this video bro seriously
