Playing A Song Without Hearing The Original // Taylor Swift - You Belong With Me
Pick a song you don't know, download a version of it featuring only drums and vocals and then fill in the blanks using the instruments you play. That's what I did here. Then I went back and had a listen to the original to see how much of a mess I'd made of it.
It's a really interesting concept that Pianote came up with and I just had to have a go at it.
Couple of side notes. This is 100% truthful, I'd never heard the track although given what I played you're going to think I'm lying. Secondly, the vocals are very glitchy. It's just how the vocals came from karaoke Version, it's obviously not Taylor singing. I thought about running this through AI, but for the few views it's gunna get, it just doesn't matter.

A quick look at this great offering from Browne Amplification. A modified Blues Breaker and Nobels ODR-1 in the same enclosure. My 1st time playing through any kind of ODR circuit and I can totally see why players would be in to them. Very radio friendly, quite fat, not stupid amounts of gain, but enough to cover a lot of things and cleans up nicely with the volume pot. This is a cool looking p...

Exactly as the title says, just a smooth, subtle lead tone, with a hint of Duane Allman about it, using an marshall SV20H and no pedals. The two channels are 'jumped'. I give you an isolated example and you can see the settings. I used a Greenback IR by Redwirez, loaded in to a Sonicake IR loader. I like this tone. I used Ozone 11 for the Mastering. The Laney IRT Pulse used with an impulse response is a great sound. When they came out a good few years back, they were a solid offering in a market that wasn't dominated by modelling technology. I reckon there's still a place for a simple valve driven unit like this, for all of us that don't like menus. However, I'd want an IR loader and a stereo output and then it's something I'd be really in...

The Boss BF-2 Flanger from 1983. Just trying this out mainly for the hell of it, but also thinking about getting rotary sounds from a flanger in a live environment. I was considering chopping in my Tech 21 Fly Rig as you can't access the rotary on the fly, which is a drawback. A dedicated leslie sim is another way to go, but the cost of a good one is prohibitive. Thoughts?

Swift isn't in my regular rotation, either. I have a dim recollection of seeing the video years ago when TS first released that, and from that recollection it seemed like you nailed it. Your playback confirmed it. Re: the major/minor at the end, I think she likes happy endings. 8-) Probably all those years of of covers gigging has a pop sensibility ingrained into your fingers, even though we hear more sophisticated material from you on this channel. -Tom
I’d guess these types of videos get demonetised?
Nice one Ben 👍 😊
POD does the RAW Vintage tone so well \m/
I’ve had this pedal for years, so it was good to see someone new to it do an excellent demo. Really well done. You’re also right about it not getting the appreciation it deserves. Some of the paid demos of it were very half-arsed, and frankly lazy. Your demo showed off all the sounds and features well and I agree, it’s a bit of a shame NUX don’t update this pedal with the firmware to enhance it. I think they could improve the octave shimmer effect much more too, but an excellent all round pedal and a bargain too.
I got this from Aliexpress many years ago, some have come and gone, but this has never left my pedalboard. So much stuff you can do with it. It's so inspiring to use to this day.
Thanks for the review. Nice to see some slide in this context.
Another one of these half the video running your mouth
The upper end if the drive curve is clearly going for a Brian May treble booster sound, which I adore.
Loving my SV20H but struggling a little getting a good reverb/delay tone from the effects loop, especially after coming from years of using fender deluxe/princetons. I'm assuming you're using digital effects added in your DAW (whatever it is it sounds really great) - what types of pedals would you suggest to get your sound here? I.e., are you using spring/room reverb, any delay etc.?
Thanks! Yes, you're spot on I'm using the stock effects from Cubase 6 Artist Student Edition from 2010. Live, I'm running my verb and delay straight in to the front of the amp, which sounds good as long as you don't go crazy with the levels of either and/or you don't run too much gain on the amp. It's a compromise, but like you I didn't enjoy the effects loop for some reason. I'll have to try it again, but I rarely carry 5 cables with me for guitar on a gig (4 in use and one spare) as it seems like a lot of extra work, especially when I have to bring the PA too. I'm using an NUX Cerberus at the moment, it has the NUX Atlantic Delay and Verb in it. I did a review of the Atlantic before NUX sent me the Cerberus. I highly recommend either unit as they sound good and are very reasonably priced. You'd probably get an Atlantic for 50 quid used. Cheers, Ben.
@@BenFletcherGuitar Thanks for the response! I'll try running my effects into the front of the amp, didn't even think of that.
This Marshall is the amp anyone should own! I run 2 amps, this and an a PRS MT15! I put an angry Charlie and EP boost in the front of the amps! Slight break up on the Marshall! Been told it’s a great tone!
Why not wrap the strings over the top of the tailpiece?
What an absolut stunning tone. 😮
Very helpful! I've been getting more into using compression, but I've not really understood what I'm doing
That is a pedal I won't be buying.
This isn't really a song, it's more of a concept. It's supposed to represent AI's learning, from seemingly random extracts of a bigger picture, to a place where it starts to join the dots, to it becoming useful, to it replacing jobs, to it becoming an unstoppable thing that we lean too heavily on, to us being at its mercy (Not being exterminated like a sci-fi film! I was thinking more along the lines of dependency or AI takeover of vast swathes of the labour market and only being left menial manual tasks that are cheaper to get a human to do) to it ultimately becoming a bit of a dystopian nightmare. The end shuts off dramatically as an awakening or because the end isn't written, I hadn't really decided on that bit! Anyway, it's supposed to be all that but without words!
Somebody woke up in a metal mood 🤣 Very cool Ben 👍🏻
Haha! Recorded the whole track with a BC Rich Warlock and three Waza Craft Metal Zones...
@@BenFletcherGuitar 🤣🤣🤣
Awesome ❤😊🎉
Thanks, mate!
Great work. David Torn has been such a pioneer of tools and techniques. AB knows what to do with things. Innately it seems, he’s not very techie. But he is fearless, which helps immeasurably. I look forward to your next one. Cheers.
Thank you! Both very inspiring players. This track is more of a concept thing, but in general I'm interested in trying to create some more stuff like Torn's soundscape/texture pieces. I really like how seemingly random they are, right on the edge of falling apart!
The Rotary switch is actually very logical. "Volume at 10" is the bridge pickup, which is the loudest. When you "reduce the volume", you get quieter positions.
Does the volume goes off i mean 0%
Mxr flanger mini is more chorus than a flange
Hi! I have a Roland SD One Kick but can’t seem to make it work properly. I plug it into a standard amp and it works for a few seconds, then it starts flashing and switches off! Can you help, please!
hi ben, thanks for your review. does it get louder if we hit harder, or is the sound constant regardless of how hard we hit? Will adjusting the sensitivity and threshold settings affect this?
From memory (this is a while ago and it belonged to someone else) I felt that it had some degree of touch sensitivity but the timbre of the sample would be unchanged. Adjusting sensitivity (did it have that?) is more about how hard you have to hit it to trigger it, as opposed to how dynamic something is. Hope this helps, Ben.
Your rapid finger strum at 5:52 !?! Show me how! Very cool.
Ben this is awesome, metal sound 😊
Thanks, man! You know me, none more metal! Haha!
Hey! This demo looks great! I'm thinking of buying it, but can you tell me if you hear any noise when you slowly rock the wah on a clean tone? I saw another demo of this pedal that said there was a slight noise only when the wah was engaged. Is this better than a regular cry baby? Cheers!
I haven't been experiencing any particular noise issues. I would say that all wah's have a bit of noise when you kick them in on higher gain tones, but nothing the mix or the drummer wouldn't mask out. My Bad Horsie was exceptional noisy and that was optical, so not sure why. Pay close attention to the bypass sound, as I mention in the video this wah is buffered. The standard cry baby is a great pedal, I do like the adjustable Q point on this one, as it can make the wah effect more pronounced. There are lots of good options for stand-alone wah's but this one comes with the benefit of being a volume too. If you don't need the volume that might not be so useful, as you may leave it with the volume slightly backed off by accident. Cheers, Ben.
And thank you!
@@BenFletcherGuitar Thank you very much for taking time to respond Ben! I just purchase it supposedly for our gig next month! Hopefully it will work out well using both the volume and wah! I see that this is a very new release so I;m not seeing any othe reviews. Thanks again for this video review that made it easy for me to decide!
Not for me I'm afraid. I prefer three waza metal zones in a row into a 5150 🤣
Haha! Those 5150's actually slay, but only if you can turn them up to a blistering volume. Of course the Metal Zones have to be Waza Craft, for the tone! All of them set to full gain.
Thought I'd chime in. Iv been a fender guy for a number of years. However recently in the past year or so iv had the pleasure of coming across a number of gibsons that i am proud to own. I now own 5 gibsons. They all are slightly different. The best sounding one is a fully chambered 2008 one where the guy before me took out the pcb borad electronics and the strange input jack. Replaced it with a regular one. It only has one of the original pickups in it now. I have no idea what the other one is . But man does it ever sound good. I also have 2008 classic ( a sunburst) and a 2010 classic gold top. Now 2 339s as well. I really feel out of all the vintage ones iv been able to touch ( lucky enough to have two incredible guitar shops in town that get vintage ones in) . The chambered ones are incredible. I dont believe older is better. Good and bad guitars are built all the time. Regardless of year. Thank you for this in depth video
ugh.......
Amazing demo and playing!
Thank you, very kind!
can you help me, to explain fx loop with this pedal( bugera v22 infinium amp) I assume input( send) mono( return)? great video btw!!
just got one on reverb for 135, brand new🎉
Nice video! -10db for normal guitar/amp? I’m not familiar with what a hot send is (sv20?).
Thank you! My amp (Marshall SV20H) is a none master volume plexi style head. If you want more gain, you have to turn it up. In doing that for some reason it sends more signal to the send of the effects loop, so you end up clipping (another word for distorting, but in this case a horrible way) the input of whatever effect you've placed in the loop. The -10DB should theoretically allow you to send more level to the unit before it distorts, which is handy if I were to use my effects loop. Cheers, Ben.
@ thank you for that explanation!
Great video - thank you!
My 1994 has it wired the opposite way i wonder if someone was in yours and wired it backwards thats not factory in your 99 cu22 my rotary is the correct way around all the way forwards is forward and all the way back is back
sounds amazing. but, it's a great idea to have both in one pedal.
I'm impressed with the sound of the wah, especially for lead stuff where you can crank up the Q control and make it really expressive. I'm not much of a volume pedal user, but I can see it's handy to have both in one unit. Cheers, Ben.
Tasteful playing in this video! I have been using the Hotone one for a few years now and this one seems great too. A compact volume / wah combo pedal is essential for small pedalboards.
Thank you! Yes, super handy to have both in one enclosure. I haven't tried any of the Hotone products yet, but the ampero range looks cool. Sonicake have sent me two of their modelling devices, which I believe run on the same platform as the Ampero ones (You can control both units with the same software, so that's a bit of a giveaway) A lot of people like the Ampero units though, so might be worth me trying to get hold of one. Cheers, Ben.
Thanks for this great video.. Im caught between buying either an Origin Head or this SV20 ,running it clean in my bedroom with some Killer Marshall Plexi type pedals for dirt.. ( Friedman Smallbox pedal, Cmatmods Brownie) .. Don't know which option to take?..Any opinion?
Thank you! I would say that for bedroom use this amp would probably be way too loud unless you run it through an attenuator. (unless it's a really massive bedroom!) That being said, the normal channel takes pedals well and would sound great with most dirt pedals. The bright channel of this amp needs to be turned up a long way to clear that bright cap. It's unusable to my ears unless it's at least half way up (which is sodding loud for home use!). You could maybe clip the bright cap, though you'd no longer have a warranty. I don't have experience with the origin series amps unfortunately so can't comment on those too much. I've heard good things, but the demos seem quite fizzy so I'm not sure. Also, there is no clean with this amp. I've recently put out a video comparing this amp to the JTM45 version. It might be worth having a look at that, as you'll get a feel for what this amp does at different volume levels. Just as a quick note, I run in to an attenuator and then an impulse response through my mixing speakers. Doing that I can play at barely speaking volume, even with the amp at maximum. Cheers, Ben.
@BenFletcherGuitar Hi Ben..Thanks for that detailed response. That really helps me....If it's going to be hard to 'clear the bright cap' on channel 1 which I want, ( the "Jimmy Page "Channel) I'd have to look at a Master Vol mod and then that will compromise the clean....I think maybe a higher powered Marshall with a master may be the way for me ( 1987 50 watt with master mod or Origin)
Crazy ❤
An attractive, board-friendly size for this pedal; thanks for putting it on my radar. The playing at the beginning was even more attractive, especially the killer slide work! -Tom
Thanks, Tom! Just in-case you confuse this with the Volwah from Sonicake, this is a full size wah (only because you said about 'board friendly size') Someone else mentioned it in the comments and that one is a mini pedal. Personally I prefer the full size wah's as I find the mini ones a little tricky to control, although I can see they're practical for small setups. Thanks again, Ben.
@@BenFletcherGuitar Thanks for the clarification. To me, it looks mid-sized. I have both a regular and Jr Ernie Ball volume pedal; both are significantly larger than, say, a Boss FV-30H (which has taken their place on my board; I'd call it mid-sized). I also have a Dunlop Volume(X)Mini, which is what I'd consider to be "mini" sized. I'm guessing from your video that the Flip Wah is closer to Boss in size than it is to EB, but that's just a guess.
Great playing, glad you admitted to the selling of the soul, it's tough out there. But at 1:25 you say 'we have' when of course 'we' don't.
Haha! Thank you! I jest of course, I'd only trade a soul for talent, not pedals. I just haven't found the right crossroads yet! It was the royal 'we' I was referring to. Since the devil wanted to make the trade, I guess the devil owns the gear? Maybe I should have said 'he' has a Q knob, that he's allowing me to adjust...for a price.
@@BenFletcherGuitar great reply, very relieved to see humour not dead yet on UA-cam. Keep 'em coming!
A volume pedal is something I have been interested in for years. This one sounds fine in your demo and I like the battery option. Wah I'm less interested in.
I think they make a dedicated volume pedal too. I'm a bit of a wah junkie once I get one on a gig, I can't stop myself! ha! I tend not to take one though. Jeff Beck used one a lot and I always like that sound. If you have some kind of buffered pedal like a Boss tuner, you can stick that before a passive volume pedal and achieve the same result as an active volume pedal. Basically so that your pickups don't get hit with the extra load from turning down because of the buffer. Might be a cheaper way of doing it, as passive volumes are easy to come by. Pay close attention to my bypass example, there's a barely perceptible difference in having this one in-line, which is why I added that section.
Which is the difference with the volwah pedal from Sonicake?
I've never tried the volwah, but I just googled it. This is a full size pedal, the volwah is very small. This one has an adjustable Q knob, the vowah doesn't. This one can run off 9v battery, the volwah doesn't appear to list that as a feature. This one is orange, the volwah isn't!
@@BenFletcherGuitar Already bought it! But I feel its too difficult to switch wah/volume mode. Seems that the two rubbers next to the button are so big so I have to push hard to press the button
@@pablob4310 You bought this one or the VolWah? That's interesting because I nearly mentioned in my video that mine is super easy to switch on. I had a Cry Baby years ago, that literally required stamping on to get it to turn on! Maybe the rubbers will compact over time, or you could cut a bit off them? Or...you could eat more and let gravity be the solution!
@@BenFletcherGuitar Is this same Pedal (Flip Wah). I already did the very first try right now... So lets see if the rubbers get softer along this days. I will update. Thank u! 👍
Is it a rotary pot design, or magnetic, as per the Wahter?
I was going to take it to pieces to find out, but I've just noticed it has geared teeth on the arm that's on the underside of the footplate. I would think the only reason you would do that is to move something that connects with it, so I'm gunna go with rotary pot. I will say that for the time the wahter worked it didn't sound as good to me as this one. This is a much more throaty and extreme wah, especially for lead work. I'd be interested to know what it's modeled on.
Your sound Production is superb here. I like it. I am using this SV20 with Archer Gold version also sometimes I use Mesa Cleo OD. I am trying to use Ibanez TS9. TS( responses more a bit spongy if that is the word. Thank you for sharing ..very useful knowledge from you.
Bought a Firebird with the tailpiece cranked down as far as it could go. I brought it halfway up and could not tell any difference in anything, sound, feel or sustain. Don't know what the other owner was trying to accomplish setting it that way. I think if there's an adjustment on something people just have to fiddle away at it.
Clearing the place out. Ouch. Are you sure the tone was as sweet as you’re imagining? lol. Just messing with ya. It did sound good. But a lot of pedals to get there.
Awesome slide playing! Almost sounds like a harmonica at times.
When you said you turn the amp past 4 it just gets flabby.I knew you were talking about fender lol. Super reverb player for 25 years now. But the Brit amps vox Marshall keep some presence,Fender..Past 5 it’s slop especially a 4 10 fender.
