Why Do Drunk People Survive Car Crashes More?

  • There are seemingly never ending news stories involving the mug shot of a drunk driver mostly unharmed after getting in an accident. Meanwhile, their victims are left fighting for their lives, or worse, already dead. The perception from this is that somehow being drunk will protect you from sustaining injuries in the event of a car crash or some other trauma. As to why, the commonly held idea is that the more relaxed you are in your drunken stupor, the less likely you will be to get injured. As to why, the general idea often put forth is that you’ll bend and contort into whatever shape the accident puts you in without fighting it. Stiffening up prevents your ability to fold like a pretzel and makes all your inner bits tense. Thus, you snap like a twig, injuring yourself more readily and severely. But is any of this actually true? Are drunk drivers actually less likely to be injured than their vastly more responsible compatriots?
    It turns out there are indeed many studies on the topic that show you have a greater chance of survival from trauma should alcohol be in your system. That said, other studies show overall mortality can be as much as 2-fold higher if you have alcohol on board. So, which is correct and is the whole floppy drunk thing actually protecting you?

    In my city of Austin on Memorial Weekend a couple of years ago there was a horrific crash when a drunk driver crossed the median driving a Jeep Wrangler, crashed into a Fiat Abarath containing family of 4 vacationing in my city who were heading to the airport to catch a flight back home to California. The sole survivor in that Fiat was little girl who lost both her parents instantly and her brother a few days later in hospital and on impact the drunk driver (who wasn't wearing a seat belt) flew his windshield, landed like a rag doll on the road and was able to walk away with just a bump on his head. Anytime I pass on that stretch I always think of them and for gods sake people please don't drive drunk.

    • @artyomarty391
      @artyomarty391 4 роки тому +13

      unfortunately not so easy to drive sober. There are several things to consider. First, is that millions of people drive drunk and never get into an accident. The statistics say that, for example, 1/5 of accidents are due to drunk driving(i dont know the exact statistic). However, what the statistics forget to mention, is that approximately 1/5 of people on the road had been drinking. So if 1/5 of drivers are drunk on the road, and 1/5 of accidents are caused by drunk driving, this means that driving drunk does not (significantly) impede one's driving performance
      Second, its just pretty expensive to not drive drunk. Sure, one may argue that a DUI costs tens of thousands of dollars and so its cheaper not to risk getting one, but such an argument is a slippery-slope. One could, for example, couter argument this argument with "well, if you eat healthy and cook at home you will save thousands and improve your health, so why are you here at mcdonalds?". Most people drive drunk because of necessity. My friend constantly drives home or wherever drunk but he is a good driver. But he cant take an uber because, well, that basically means he'd have to spend an additional $50 and then next day spend time looking for his car.
      Third, sober people cause accidents, too. Matter of fact the vast, vast majority of motor vehicle accidents are caused by non-drunk drivers. I worked at a personal injury law firm and maybe for like every 50 cases we had, out of those 50 there was maybe 1 case which had a drunk driver involved. This is pretty low considering that many drivers drive after drinking
      Fourth, some studies say that driving drunk actually improves your driving in the sense that drunk people oftentimes will go the extra mile not to speed. If I get behind the wheel after drinking, for example, I am not going to exceed the speed limit because I wouldnt want the cops to stop me for speeding and then charge me with a DUI. But if I am sober, I wouldnt mind going the usual 15 over the limit with my music blasting
      Drunk drivers are simply a scapegoat and the threat is exaggerated. The chances of being a victim of a drunk driver are very slim, but in every other movie someone's parents or wife died "due to a car crash/drunk driver". Drunk drivers are sort of like paedophiles or corrupted racist cops: there are very few of them/or there is almost no threat to any one individual, but the media makes it out as if this is where all our problems come from
      Not saying drunk driving should be allowed, but the threat should not be exaggerated because it then becomes a lie.

      @personperson8563 4 роки тому +30

      Artyom Arty Why the fuck are you trying to encourage drunk driving? If there were less drunk drivers there would be less horrible accidents such as this one? Yes? Also don’t compare your drunken state to general populace. Not to mention how much of threat changes on how drunk you are. If you’re hammered you probably wouldn’t even bother being careful. Also I don’t see what’s so bad with that lie, in many drivers Ed courses the dangers of driving is heavy overexaggerated in order to scare new teen drivers. Is it kind of lying yes? It it potentially making teens drive safer? Yes, and that’s worth the lie
      Also while drunk driving accidents are less common, when they do happen they are more oftener fatal

      @@artyomarty391 I agree today's laws do not go after truly drunk drivers, but anybody who has consumed alcohol before driving. The laws are not about safety but are used as a tool for the state to collect revenue. When the new laws started working to reduce drivers with alcohol in their system they had to start the open container law to keep the money flowing in to the state. This was taught by risk reduction classes to be factual.

      So my thinking also is... how often is it that the drunk is speeding straightforward at the other car while all the other cars going in some other direction? I know that cars are designed so that when they hit something straight on all the safety devices kick into play.
      When you're in a car that's been rear-ended you have far less protection because I know that they don't test for survivability in that type of crash.
      Then there's a case of a woman I met years ago. Very cheerful very drunk and pretty enough. Back when I was young and reasonably handsome. I'd been at some art showing where she showed up like that.... she was going through an intersection that evening, and someone T-boned her vehicle where she died instantly. She was driving a pickup truck and the other driver struck her left side.

    I once had a discussion with a co-worker who loved to drink and drive. I was arguing that he was likely to get into a crash if he kept doing it. His counter-argument was that he drives a huge truck with a reinforced steel bumper, so he would be just fine in a crash. I gave up trying to convince him at that point.
    Still, it does lend to another possible explanation for the common tale of the drunk who walks away unscathed from a multiple-fatality wreck that he caused. I have no idea if people who drive drunk are statistically more likely to drive larger, tougher vehicles, but it is food for thought.

    I might have survived an accident while sober by getting drunk. While sober I had a heavy bikecrash in which I hit my head severely. I continued my way to a friends birthday party at the bar he owns, where I got completely drunk. Next day arriving at work I was thinking I had a recordbreaking hangover, but collegues said I should go to hospital to get a check. Arriving at the hospital is the last thing I can remember as I was comatized for 19 days with severe head injuries (3 brain haemorrhages and multiple skull fractures were the worst of them). When I woke up and was able to tell the doctors what happened, they told me that getting drunk might have saved my life, because it prevented my brain from stressing out over what just happened, causing more damage. I was declared fit again after just 3 months, where normally with such injuries that would probably take double that. Also I suffered no after effects at all, which is uncommon after suffering such injuries.

      Not quite the "engine block" but yes the front end crash scenario is most protected for the driver for a few reasons. After having heard/read the anecdotes from various vehicle accidents over and over, and also having studied vehicular accidents as part of my job, what's really happening is that, while the drunk driver may have caused a collision with another set of innocent people by being distracted, having tunnel vision, and/or simply reacting too slowly -- once aware of a potential accident, they STILL WERE ABLE TO ACT TO MITIGATE THE WORSE IMPACT SCENARIO for themselves. Sadly, the innocent parties involved are not as prepared for what is going to happen, and/or are constrained by simply trying to stay in their lane, and are therefore dealt with more severe consequences by how they are literally impacted by the drunk driver's vehicle.
    As an example, drunk drivers are more likely to drift into an oncoming lane of traffic. They will tend to do this at a shallow angle, which will tend to glance off of the other vehicle. The more you can convert potential energy into kinetic energy, the less of a sudden deceleration you will have to endure, which is the primary cause of the snapping and crushing of your body parts. On the flip side (pun intended), the victims in the other vehicle are not aware that the other driver is drunk, and are more likely to bang on the horn and/or slam on the brakes, while staying in their lane, pointed straight ahead, versus engaging in last second avoidance maneuvers. Therefore, their deceleration as a result of impact will be far more extreme, as there is far less bounce and/or roll (with seat belts fastened, hopefully) to lessen the chance of impact with the windshield and/or being crushed as the vehicle becomes significantly shorter in length (which airbags cannot help you with).
    On the topic of airbags, I'd like to add the case of my coworker being T-boned while he was legally making a left hand turn at a green light, but after a real cop had already been through the red light to attend to a robbery in progress at a nearby gas station, his meter-man buddy decided to try to follow him through, and instead, killed my coworker, crushing him -- by hitting the driver's side door, perpendicularly, with the front bumper of his vehicle. No airbag would have helped, BUT, if my coworker's car had had the feature of being able to independently raise and lower his suspension at each corner of his vehicle, he could have rolled and survived (he was properly strapped in with his seat belt). Instead of implementing this feature, my employer simply closed that exit from our facility, and made everyone drive 1/4 mile further to each morning and evening.
    Why? They were still wincing from the rollover controversy caused by a last minute swap in of hard, brittle rubber from their tire supplier. With only one month to go before production, they couldn't rebuild the (non-actively-adjustable) suspension to provide a softer ride, so they lowered the air pressure in the tires. This was fine for normal, flexible rubber, but it resulted in splits in the sidewall of the substandard stiff rubber tires. At high speed around turns in very hot weather, the tire might burst. Again, instead of causing that supplier to go into bankruptcy, the Feds instead made it mandatory for all tires to have sensors that tell you if your tire inflation is low. Not only do we all ignore these warnings, due to high false alarm rates, but they are still completely useless in telling us that our rubber suppliers are negligent crooks, and so they will do nothing to prevent an exploded tire. In fact, this tire inflation sensor is vulnerable to disruptive hacking (they just need to disrupt, not access) by a passing terrorist in a vehicle driving near you, causing your traction control to overcompensate for an inflation problem that doesn't exist. So, the vehicle company then has to increase their backup failure strategies, plus layers of software security, which they partially achieve by hiring a supplier, who adds software no one at the vehicle manufacturer has the course code for.
    In the meantime, tractor trailers, off-road mining vehicles, and military vehicles have all been dynamically modifying their suspensions, for many years now, to maintain stability in the face of unstable road surfaces on one side versus the other, extreme potholes, and impacts from others trying to bumper car you off of your intended path. My former employer does, however, vertically modify their suspensions now to mitigate the damage from potholes, because it helps reduce warranty claims. Just not to encourage a rollover for a belted in driver who faces certain death from a t-bone collision. Because, "optics."
    So, in an alternate reality, if my coworker were to make that very same green arrow left hand turn today, and get run into his driver's side door by that same over eager meter-man -- he'd still die. And if that meter-man were drunk, odds are still likely he'd walk away unscathed, because, while still crushing my coworker and killing him, he'd likely have made enough of a steering response to make a glancing blow for himself, rolling, or even just bouncing off of my coworker. Another reason for this, is that, for decades, regulations drove vehicles to survive head-on impacts into walls. Only in the last 2 decades did they even start to care about rear-ends and t-bones, but never at the same speeds.
    Hope this helps better explain why drunks (and other over zealous drivers, causing the accidents) often walk away in far better shape than their victims.

    • @zecc81
      @zecc81 4 роки тому +2

      I agree the drunk person causing the accident will, in almost every scenario, drive into something going forward and usually straight on, which is the most protected scenario due to the design of crumple zones, seat belts, and airbags. The victim on the other hand might get t-boned, or any variety of offset crash scenarios, not to mention passengers being involved as well. Very surprised this was not mentioned.

    This was an eerily timed video. Here in California we just had a drunk driver who killed 3 kids convicted to 51 years to life. I’ve been thinking about it a lot because I drive Uber. I remember that night, I was less than half a mile away from the crash and heard it. I passed them. I was probably, unknowingly, the last person to see them alive, and 20 seconds later, they were gone. It’s aggravating, because that night was slow, I was there and so were other drivers, looking for passengers. She didn’t call us and now she will never marry, have kids, and she’ll be 80 if she ever gets out. Those 3 kids are dead. Whatever made her survive, her life is nonetheless over.

    I'd say, probable because cars are built to take direct/linear collisions. Have car A hit metal slab B, or have a moving slab B hit car A.
    A drunk person is less likely to try and avoid the collision, so hits directly.
    The sober driver in contrast, is trying to swerve to avoid, putting the car at a more awkward angle(in terms of location his, and momentum). It's like why they say if you are going to hit a dog, or deer, it is better to not try and make a sudden turn, as that can destabilize the car.

    After I wrecked my car on Ambien, my attorney told me the Ambien saved my life. He said that if I had moved in the process of rolling my car I would have gotten seriously injured or killed. I should not have been able to walk out of the hospital without treatment. If you ever get prescribed Ambien, Lunesta, or Sonata, leave your keys in a drawer. It’s rare, but people can take it and get into car crashes and not remember a thing, even if they are certain they would never drive under the influence. “sleep-driving” is sometimes listed as a side effect, depending on the resource. I’m lucky to not have a criminal record or severe injuries.

After they reattached his arm, patched the hole in his skull and put his eye back in its socket. I wish it was more common for people who have done things like this to say they will never drink again. But that is where I am today, some 20 years later. I never wanted to hurt anyone else. Myself, I was fine with. But hurting someone else... I never wanted that at all. And I will never harm another person while drunk ever again, I can guarantee that now. Because I don't drink anymore.

      If two vehicles are driving at 10km/h, head on, they have a closing speed of 20kmh. If one car is traveling at 100 and the other 10, the closing speed is 110. Speed is only part of the equation. Mass is also important. A bird hitting a car is less mass than a truck. Hitting a bird at 100kmh will cause little damage. Hitting a parked truck at 5 kmh will cause substantial damage. Hitting a truck at 100kmh will likely be fatal. Hitting the truck at 500kmh will definitely be fatal, but you're also going to cause quite a bit of damage to the truck.
      You don't transfer more energy into the truck, you have more energy to disperse into your seatbelt and airbags, before the steering wheel goes through your chest.

    My sister, was in the back seat of a VW rabbit in the 80s before seatbelt laws, she was between the front seats talking to her friends when they hit a car head on. She went through the windshield (windscreen) and we were told that the only reason she didn't break her neck and die is she was drunk enough that her reactions had slowed and she didn't tense up so she was able to absorb the impact.
    Now at 54 she still has scars on her scalp and body, but she's still kicking!

    I have to disagree I went to a party and got smashed. Passed out until 6 in the morning and got in my car to go to work. And crashed and broke both legs. Dislocated my hip and hurt my lower back. I was trapped inside the car because the steering wheel was in my lap. My daughters almost lost their dad when they were young. They would have never really even knew me. I thank god I lived. I would have bleed to death if not for being in someone's front yard

    I went limp before being crushed by a brand new Chevy Suburban. I saw it coming in my rear window. Dad was a cop, and told me to go limp if I think I'm about to be hit. Said the drunks always live. I was injured, but I was the only survivor in my vehicle. Sucks but true. I said "he's not stopping". Should of said GO LIMP. But I didn't.
    I was shocked that it was a woman, who was looking for her phone in the floor. She had just bought the SUV 3 days before. I'm still dealing with the injuries, and mental stress of it, years later. I need dental implants to be finished. 4 or five more added, and a TBI that led to Secondary Empty Sella Syndrome. My meds cost 10k a month, and I have to fight my insurance for it. I almost died without them, and had a gofundme set up. I just felt guilty, spending all that money on meds. My family could use it.

    I think it's just psychological. When faced with death, alcohol calms the nerves; which is why it's not uncommon to drink on the battlefield. I was in a motorcycle accident a few years back, I wasn't drinking, it was just an accident on the highway. Right before I blacked out I remember telling myself to relax and just take the ride, so I pulled my hands down from the bars and hit the guardrail. My doctors are quite convinced that relaxing, and just letting it happen is why I survived. I lost my arm, but I dove headfirst into a guardrail at 130kmh, so.. I call it a win. My point is that alcohol makes you more complacent when it comes to facing trauma. I will say from experience though; being relaxed when you're having an accident will definitely increase your chance to survive.

    One of the factors that may contribute to the fact of drunk drivers surviving crashes is how crumple zones in vehicles are designed to protect the driver in crashes, sober or not. Another factor is that you are drunk and survive the crash, you are getting arrested and your mug shot taken. Hopefully, you will be sober enough to understand the charges being read against you. If not, the odds of you being convicted of those charges rise dramatically.

    In all likelihood, the answer is simply that it's a case of confirmation bias. An innocent child or family dying while the drunk-driver survives without a scratch is very infuriating and gets a lot of coverage and discussion, and is also very memorable, especially because of the emotional aspect. Conversely, cases of the drunk-driver dying or both/neither side dying tend to go unreported. That makes it _seem_ like it happens a lot while in actuality, it's probably not as common as it seems.

  • @jinbiezel683

    I as well as many of you probably said to yourself that a drink would be more relaxed after just reading the title. But I immediately thought back to ever accident I've ever been in and the thing is apart from one of them I wasn't actually expecting them to happen so there was really no time for my body to be tense. Therefore that explanation, although the one I fully expected him to say, seemed stupid to me. Therefore I'm really glad that he countered that idea in the video. While I'm certain that there are many people who had a split second to become tense, particularly in head on collisions, for the most part I don't think that people drive around expecting to get into accidents. Which is why so many of them occur in the first place.
