In the video today, we're looking at a rather remarkable dwarf who, despite standing only about 2 feet tall as an adult, rose from a simple commoner to a knight and Captain of the horse, among other exploits.

Hard work and buggery
The other Lord Minimus video was better
Simon, please imagine that the Giant brings out coffee for her guests. Then he opens his fly and the little Man jumps out in a penis costume. Then he puts cream in to their cups of coffee.
His epithet made me sad. He was so much more than "a dwarf presented in a pie to King Charles 1st"
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that poor Lord Minimus never returned from slavery and instead some other short man -- twice his height -- stole his identity in the final years in order to reach freedom...
The issue with that is that he would have been quite well known _personally._
I was thinking about ways someone with growth hormone deficiancy could have a change in hight in adulthood. Say developing a hormone producing pituary tumor?
Also returning just after the Queen died so that nobody that lived close to him could confirm or deny.
I think the same thing. After 25 years of slavery and rape, I doubt he looked the same and anybody that remembered him was much older so just vague memories of what he looked like.
I agree.
This guy clearly needs a biopic, starring Peter Dinklage because Peter Dinklage is awesome.
Yes! He’d be great!
problem is that one of the most distinct features of lord minimus was the fact tha he was his peculiar dwarfism, he was nearly perfectly proportional, what means he was pretty distinct from Peter Dinklage(although I do agree Peter is quite awesome indeed) , who has a more common type of dwarfism which leads limbs with different proportions than a regular person, resulting in a very inaccurate pic since has he looked like the typical person with dwarfism it would have been very unlikely for him to catch as much attention of such high nobility, since regular dwarfism was much more common.
He almost sounds like the inspiration for Tyrinion Lannester.
@@jamesdean0885 Actuallly that's Richard III
@@jamesdean0885 Tyrion Lannister, not Tyrinion Lannester
Damn. This story started off so innocent and cool then got buggered quick.
Literally buggered toward the end... yes I should be ashamed of myself.
@@Skunkieboo everybody gets buggered in the end, how else would it be done?
He'd be buggered if he wouldn't get any taller quick
a dwarf growing by such an amount after the age of 25 seems suspect, makes me wonder if the returning slave was actually another who he met while a slave and learned of his story and the real one died sometime thereafter while still a slave.
Let's see you withstand some... Ahem, expansion. . after 25 years of buggery.
Since it could have been a pituitary issue or something along those lines, I think it could be possible, at least more so, than if it was many other types of genetic causes of dwarfism.
With a change in environment, diet, etc. maybe something suppressed/supported something in his previously 'defective' system.
It's still quite a growth, so I wouldn't be surprised if you were right, but I imagine there could be some possibilities. Maybe even an infectious illness of some kind could have played a role, either one remedied later in life, or one that he acquired later in life which impacted his system... 🤔
As there is record of a man who was registered as both a dwarf and a giant in his life (I think you can find an episode about him here btw), it is a possibility he had issues with the pituitary gland, much like the aforementioned person, and could have grown a bit later in life.
My thought, exactly!
tl;dr - I think it was him.
I had the same thought at first, but he returned to England and was given money by people who knew him directly. I have to assume that they would have noticed if it wasn't actually him lol. More than 25 years had passed at that point, so maybe they simply forgot what he looked like and accepted his claims, but ehh, idk..that's a hell of a gamble for an imposter to make, since he very easily could have been found out immediately and executed for impersonating someone that was well-known and high ranking.
He doubled his hight while in Ottoman slavery... Has anyone considered that he was a different person impersonating Sir Jeffrey?
If that was the case, the act didn't give the impostor much benefit, apparently...
themarquess u know some small dude that knew Jeff was dead Took the bull by the horns when opportunity knocked, and got the hll out of there⚔
That's what I was thinking. It can't be the same person. Those Ottoman buggers probably split the real Geoffrey while they were buggerising around with his bum.
"If that was the case, the act didn't give the impostor much benefit, apparently..."
I mean, he went from sex-and-hard-labor slave to prisoner. Admittedly, thy fate still sucketh, but at least it sucks less. And after that he actually got to live two years as a free man, which is a huge step up from sex-and-hard-labor slave. And the court gave him some money which he might've gotten to keep. So I'd say he benefited from the ruse.
Interesting theory, I wonder if it's even possible for someone with dwarfism to grow like that in the first place.
That was my thought too. I don't know if such a growth spurt would be possible. But everything I can find seems to treat it as fact.
So he grew 22 inches because of ...sodomy? Is this the one weird trick that Doctors dont want me to find out?
Tyrion Lannister?
He's more like the dawrf fool Mushroom in Fire and Blood, the history book/prequel. Best friends with royals, everyone thought he lacked any intelligence and ended up being the most reliable scribe of his time.
Video actually starts at 1:25
Thank you

lol he kind of sounds like he could be a character from a monty python skit
He really does! Lol. I love it!

@@interwebtubes he has a wife you know...
That's exactly how the medieval royalty thought about it!
Simon, #1 your professionalism, and #2 the persona, is what rocketed your videos in the upper echelons of the UA-cam biosphere. You have improved dramatically over the course of the few years I've watched your channel, on how smooth you deliver the symposium. Now I think you have hit your stride. This was a great video!
Hes like a real life tyrian lannister
Yeah, I've wondered if he could have been at least a partial inspiration for the character for a while...
Though not enough to actually look into it at all I guess... 😅
Back then everyone drank, but did he know things?
Not really. Tyrion was high born. This man was a comoner.
Does not mean he was not the Inspiration, since most good authors don't just carbon copy people down to the last degree.
"Call me an elf one more time"
Wow what an interesting life he led. This was such a fun video. Thanks for sharing!

maybe the dwarf reappearing in england was an imposter
Thats what I was thinking
That makes much more sense. I'm certainly no expert on dwarfism, but I don't think one can just double in height post-adolescense, even with a rare variation of the disorder like his.
i agree, he was probably a fellow slave with jeffrey who didn't survive the slavery, and he find out about jeffrey's status in the court and wanted to cash in on that
@@Fakan he could have gotten a tumor in his pituitary gland, bu an impostor is a much more probable version
"That makes much more sense. I'm certainly no expert on dwarfism, but I don't think one can just double in height post-adolescense, even with a rare variation of the disorder like his."
@@Fakan, it is possible. Look up Adam Rainer. Admittedly, there have been lots of imposters over the years, and only one of Adam Rainer, so the imposter is more likely.
Simply fascinating...loved this episode!
Hands down my favorite video you've ever made!
Fascinating story, I know you guys do allot of hard work and put out allot of videos, but I would love to see artist illustrations depicting some of the events in these biopic videos. I want to see what Lord Minimus looked like in a full suit of armor, the scene of him popping out of a cake brandishing a sword and the horseback duel that ruined his life. Pencil sketches would be absolutely amazing. I know that's not likely to happen, just an idea. :)
Fantastic video guys, I love your channel! Keep up the excellent work!
Me, first half of the video: This is awesome! Why hasn't this been made into a movie?
Me, second half of video: I wish to rescind my request.
Sounds to me like George R.R. Martin took some inspiration for Tyrion Lannister from this.
same 😬
it's so crazy how those royals felt like the people were just their playthings. even wars, i mean they were all related to each other, and the english king's queen was french. they traded family members all over, and then treated massive wars like gambling over games of chess, with inanimate pawns used to play the game. even today, the same thing is happening. we have a plutocrat class in the usa who uses us just the same - but the same can be said for most every country. things haven't changed much at all. they've just gotten better at being more subtle about it to reduce the occurance of revolutions. but not any less vicious, mind you.

I'm pretty sure that puns were carpetbombed over the entire script.
@@TodayIFoundOut Would like to see {at the Cinema} a Movie about this Hudson guy, shame he didn't get a proper burial. Like with Julius Caesar -> I'd have to lay flowers on his grave. 🤩 🏰🏇🤺 👏
Once a king, always a king. Once a "knight", is enough! Lol.
I mean.
He lived a more interesting life than I have.
I don't know why I found this so fascinating. Interesting life full of ups and downs.
Great episode! Although it left me wondering why it was on this channel instead of Biographics.
Anyway, I love your work, keep it up!

I had heard about Jeffery Hudson, "Lord Minimus." Great to learn more about him. Thanks for posting!
I remember listening about him on the brainfood podcast!
How are we sure he was the same dwarf? Was there anyone alive who knew him when he returned?
Ok, I want to hear about the practice of bursting food, particularly that freaking orchestra one.
I think this might be my favourite Today I found out so far!
Truly a knight who's honor was in inverse proportion to his stature
You didn't hear the whole story..... Did you?
@@Rabbit-the-One oh I did, I stand by my statement
@@kylepietrusiewicz2749 I concur! Great comment too!
When you're short, you need to have the ability to verbally cut people down to size. Sounds like this guy had that in the bag, and could fit in it too; the bag that is.
AH I remember that one from the Brainfood podcast when it was live and everyone in the comment section had to tell both of you that you`re talking about Tyrion Lannister bc you couldn`t remember the name. How do I remember that but keep forgetting what I wanted to buy?
Is it just me, or does “Lord Minimus” sound like a cartoon villain name
Ask MODOK
I'm only listening to audio & halfway in I forgot this was a real person and thought Simon was talking about his Dungeons and Dragons character.
I respect every knight, no matter how big or small.
And this guy never came up short.
Great video Simon. You should do one on Wojtek the Polish bear that was corporal in the army.
"shortly thereafter" "a small matter" also this video is amazing has to be one of my faves so far the guys life was so interesting.
This could be the story George RR Martin based Tyrion Lannister on. Martin often grabs stories from real world history and switches them up.
"Return he 'shortly' did their after...budabump...tshshshshs! Good one.
I love a good short story.
This is a really interesting, obscure, weird story...
Looks at credits... *Karl Smallwood* co-wrote it... That explains it haha I could expect this on his channel hahaha

He must've been lucky.

Yea, I definitely want to watch this movie.
Also, I think George R. R. Martin most likely also knew about this guy. Too many similarities to GOT, even the name, even though it was applied to somebody else.
Joe O Sullivan They were both voracious readers 🤔
Wow
This would make an excellent film
Thank you
May it only be Simone that intrigues me so deeply that im always in awe with his stories of history and life events. Sad ending for the poor knight, although i enjoyed what i learned. But i now keep thinking of game of thrones and wonder if inspiration for the youngest Lattimier may of came from lord minimus.
This man could've made for a fine episode Biographics... and may yet.
I'd LOVE one on him!
Omg that armor looks dope

Simon can you please use the metric system in your videos? Thank you
I was going to mention Tyrion Lannister, but this is clearly a smart bunch.
Sounds like alot of the little Lanister's traits and characteristics were based on this guy.
5:45 "Even for a giant, he's a giant!"
Definitely inspiration for Tyrions character.
So the long and the short of it is, Geoffrey came back a little buggered.
Is this a re-upload? I know you've done a video on him before. . .

Hearing of this tale of a vertically challenged person who becomes a knight, goes away in service, and returns home twice as tall as before...
i am reminded of a certain story regarding hobbits, which wouldn’t be written for some 200+ years.

A handsome witty guy with dwarfism? Sounds like an inspiration for Tyrion in game of thrones.

yes
And clearly, as his tombstone indicates, being presented to Charles I in a pie is the most interesting part of the story.
