When the Nazis steamrolled into the Netherlands in May of 1940, Jannetje Johanna "Hannie" Schaft and Truus and Freddie Oversteegen were just 19, 16, and 14 years old respectively.
As for the Oversteegen sisters, their mother, Trijn, had left their father years before. Freddie states of this, "She was just fed up one day-we lived on a large ship in Haarlem, but my father never made any money and didn't pay anything for the barge. But it wasn't an ugly divorce or anything-he sang a French farewell song from the bow of the ship when we left. He loved us, but I didn't see him that often anymore after that."
Immediately after the Nazis came to town, despite the risks, Freddie goes on, "During the war, we had a Jewish couple living with us, which is why my sister and I knew a lot about what was going on..."
At the same time, their mother also had her daughters join in with her in the rather dangerous task of posting and distributing anti-Nazi and communist literature around town.
Given their brazen activities, word soon got around to the resistance that the girls might be open to joining, with one Frans van der Wiel coming calling in 1941. Freddie states, "A man wearing a hat came to the door and asked my mother if he could ask us [to join the resistance]. And he did... she was OK with it. "
She also states her mother simply requested of them that no matter what the resistance asked them to do, to "always stay human."
Of the sisters' personal decision to join, Truus stated,
A war like this is a very raw experience. While I was biking, I saw Germans picking up innocent people from the streets, putting them against a wall and shooting them. I was forced to watch, which aroused such an enormous anger in me, such a disgust... You can have any political conviction or be totally against war, but at that moment you are just a human being confronted with something very cruel. Shooting innocent people is murder. If you experience something like this, you’ll find it justified that when people commit treason, such as exchanging a four-year-old Jewish child for 35 guilders, you act against it.
Needless to say, they were all for it, though not quite realizing at that point everything they'd be asked to do. She states, "I thought we would be starting a kind of secret army. The man that came to our door said that we would get military training, and they did teach us a thing or two. Someone taught us to shoot, and we learned to march in the woods. There were about seven of us then-Hannie wasn't a part of the group yet, and we were the only girls."

It must be a woman thing because when most guys kill someone they just die inside and keep on going until nothing is left and they kill themselves in one manner or another.
This is one of the most heart wrenching episodes to date. I cannot even begin to imagine what it must have been like to be in their place at that time. Such bravery.
That part about the baby got me.
"Idiots! I shoot better." now these are glorious last words. Badass women.
@Matthew Huszarik Autopsy of the remains of Schaft determined that she would probably not been able to utter these words, she was shot directly into her back head, thus killing her instantly.

"The Girl with the Red Hair"...what a title for a movie.
It is actually already a movie, called: Het Meisje met het Rode Haar. Literally translate: The Girl with the Red Hair. I watched it after getting it recommended by my history teacher. And years later I even had the honor of talking with Freddie OVersteegen. She was an extraordinary women.
@Laura Christoph Hollywood can't make movies about true events, they're making up things that's never happened and pushing it as the truth. That's why the disclaimer based on a true story. They're kind of like mainstream media making stuff up as they want and reporting it as fact.
horrible name. there are too many girls with red hair that wouldn't like that.
Should have called it the ginger Ninja
@@thestrays815 too sexy, we all know ninjas wear tight clothing...
So many women took up the call to fight injustice during WW2. One of my favorites is Sufi Princess Noor Inayat Khan, who left her life of comfort as an illustrator of children’s books to become a radio operator in occupied France. She was one of Nancy Wake’s girls and was executed in the camps after capture.
You could certainly make a Band of Sisters just out of those Wake sent in and the grande damme herself.
Yes ...Noor Inyat Khan became a renowned Resistance fighter operator. I've seen a program on her.
Instead of ham-fistedly remaking old movies with a female cast, why can they make movies about badasses like these girls
Chris Daley was just thinking the same fkn thing. With the drama the add to stories this one could be jazzed up for a epic movie that not only would,be cool for femalea but men would love this story.
My thoughts exactly! These are real women who did incredible things under unthinkable circumstances. True heroes. Not fake, hand-me-down, recycled heroes from some played out movie franchise, running around squawking "girl power".
Because reality is not an option for people who live in fantasy land.
Some people want to claim to be the defenders of XXXXXX, while at the same time making XXXXXX look foolish

You have to be truly evil, vile disgusting person to pick a baby up and hit it against a wall.
I've heard stories of Nazis ripping newborns out of their mothers' arms, throwing the babies in the air and using them for skeet shooting.
Dale Alberts , give it a rest, troll
Jason E A common occurrence in the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. There is a big tree, maybe a meter in diameter, on the edge of one of the killing fields, that was used for this purpose
Do not forget how the UDA killed many American Indians and the little ones murdered on north America n ground which was basically stole from them in the first place!
I agree, and it was that exact verse in the Bible that finally convinced me something is wrong with Xianity: Psalm 137:9: "Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks." This action recommended in the Bible is beyond despicable.
These resistance fighters were serious awesome badasses, and still kept their humanity. Shooting Nazis on the street, because he killed a baby in front of her? Hanna is a hero. I’m so so sorry she got caught🥺.
Von Stroheim already did that baby scene. In France they say: after the war everyone was in the resistance. Those with the best stories didn't.
I knew a young student whose grandparents were in the resistance. She said they wouldn’t talk about it.
@@2adamast In all nazi occupied lands everyone was with the resistance after the war -even the collaborators. ;).

My grandmother lived in Paris during WWII. She was Jewish and escaped to unoccupied France. She could have sat the war out in this part of France and been safe. However, she joined the French Resistance/Underground. She had some very similar experiences as the women in the video. She was the last woman to be discharged from the Resistance. My Aunt wrote a book about her experiences with her collaboration before she passed away. You can find it on Amazon. She's definitely a hero in my eyes!

@@chrislair6832 very well. I used to listen to her stories for hours. She told all of her grandchildren about the war, so they would make sure that people didn't forget after her generation was gone. After the war, she and my grandfather came to Texas (where he was born). She didn't speak the language, knew no one in the states except my grandfather, and she was pregnant with my mother. She kept everything about the war a secret until my mother was in her late teens. My mother and aunt were raised Presbyterian. She was afraid the Nazis would return. However, when people started denying the Holocaust, she showed how strong she was again by speaking up about her experiences. I'm so glad I had her in my life into my late 40s. :)

War kills everything. Even with those who survive, something in them dies. These girls were beyond heroic, but it's horrible that they had to do what they did. I salute all who resist evil and oppression - it's good to know that there are people who will say 'no' to the worst in us.

There is a time & a season for everything under Heaven....
Hollywood would ruin this story.
Likely.
Would make if more famous; that way more of the public would hear about them, and do more research.
Like after watching any true story film, I always read more about the real person.
Also there's a Dutch movie, The Girl with the Red Hair (1981).
@inthepocket ...but Hollywood would just make it fiction about the US single handedly saving Europe from he Nazis.
Hollywood ruins EVERY story.
An HBO series would be awesome.
Moral of the story; _never_ underestimate people under pressure.
Wow! Simply amazing. Incredible heroism in the face of certain death should they ever be caught. We should all be half that brave. Great work Simon!
There is a movie about this called "Les Femmes de L'Ombre"!!! It's French, English, and German, but subtitles are available!!
True, but this movie is not about these three girls here.
Yes. I've seen that in DVD the previous decade -but I didn't know the original title and the translations aren't always accurate. The irony is that those women were plotting to entrap him and at the end he was just shot by by Sophie's Marceau character with a luger.

Amazing story about some young women who had been pushed too far. I've always been told that if a woman is pushed far enough for her to -want- need to go to war that she'll make the most lethal, cold-hearted killer in the war effort.

Excellent story. There were so many amazing acts of bravery from all over Europe during that time. I’m sure there were hundreds, if not thousands, more stories of bravery that will never be heard or died long ago. I pray that all those involved found peace thereafter.
Well done, Simon! I LOVE these stories of heroism and courage in dire circumstances like war, crisis and pestilence!
A word to those demonitizing videos like this: LILY LIVERED WUSSESS, THE LOT OF YOU!
Indeed. If anything, stories like this need to be promoted. Always good to see stories about people who have the appropriate reaction to fascism and its adherents.

Here you go Hollywood, you want to make movies about strong women? Try these Dutch girls on for size, it’d be awesome!
They'd be too white and straight
No. Hollywood only likes plots that focus on -black- _people of color_ trans lesbian social justice 'heroes' these days.
It is easier to destroy Star Wars and The Terminator.
Umm, sir? That would be a huge mistake if you were to hand this story over to Hollywood. Today, they have destroyed so many real life historical stories through their trashy way of making historical movies and certain other movie genres.
Involves guns. Can't show that they are used for self protection and fighting tyranny.
What an amazing story!!! Thank you for sharing.

My father, Canadian Forces Europe, ended his tour of service in Holland. He was very fond of the Dutch and always spoke kindly of them. And he wasn't one to speak kindly very much at all.

My father was 15 when Holland was liberated by the Canadians. One of your soldiers gave Dad a bit of chocolate and his first cigarette (to celebrate). Dad rarely spoke about the war, but literally on his death bed, the day before he died, he talked for about two hours about his family's experiences and his closing comments were about how wonderful the Canadian soldier was to him. It is always the business of the children to clean the messes left by adults. That's why adults should focus on leaving children less messes to clean up.
@Julius Ashcroft Whoa there boy. The blow to Hitlers narcissistic ego after being rejected for art school was enormous, and a bitterness he carried through his life. Doesn't matter that he truly sucked at art, what matters is that Hitler, in his delusional mind-set was enraged and stultified in said anger. It was one of the blows that created in him his sense that he was not only against the world, but a misunderstood genius. I think your emotional reaction to the OP ignores that. Hitler was one very sick individual, out to prove himself to a world that largely ignored him; something he could not abide. We all know the results. Encapsulating them in terse, moderately comical words does no disservice to anyone.
We need some modern versions of those girls in the Senate and Maralago.

The evil that pushed such beautiful and innocent souls to violence must have been truly repulsive. Their words are quite adequite to describe what they saw but the idea that a person who would not other wise hurt a fly finds themselves pushed to cold blooded murder because the alternative is so that much worse, it breaks my heart that these brave women had to give up so much of themselves, their youth and their innocence.

...I've been involved with various causes and protested various things over the years. Risking an ass-beating for a good cause isn't being a resistance fighter. Just isn't. @jay not at all. But when a force has invaded your country and is committing genocide, yes, I do think armed resistance is necessary then. I'd much rather it never come to that, but if an organisation is systematically murdering a part of your population I think it's everyone's duty to do what they can stop them. If the Nazis could've been stopped could've been stopped through non-violent diplomatic means that would of course have been best, but that wasn't the case. It's not a right vs left thing - I hold the same opinion for resistance against communist dictatorships like the former Soviet Union.
@Honudes Gai It's really not, but such is the nature of war. It sucks. Would you prefer to not do anything if another country invaded your own and started killing your people by the millions? The drafted teenagers don't want to be there, sure, but that's not a reason to let them commit genocide.

Some members of my family tree are counted among the righteous, from the Israeli government, for what they did to protect Jews. But if you asked them if they were heroes they would reply, “Heroes? No! We could do no other.”
Are you that Nywening that lived in Ireland for a while? Trying to give peace a helping hand? If you don't call yourself a hero, I do. At least you tried, and that counts. I wish I could follow your example.
Yeh my great grandpa was the head of civil protection in his village near Harlam, most of his work was misplacing files and smuggling documents to resistance cells.
He got to blow up a bridge with his brothers, and they were all captured quick after. He was spared the execution, and lived to an old man and died in 1974, fishing with his youngest brother. Just laid down for a nap and didn’t wake up.
He was one of the lucky ones. His being spared just another act of cruelty, told to go back to the village and tell everyone what happened there that day.
