What Do Citra Hops Taste Like? SMaSH Beer Experiment

  • Evaluating a CITRA SMASH beer this week.
    Our journey continues down the SMASH beer hop exploration with this week's CITRA SMASH beer.
    This is such a popular hop, we were surprised we hadn't hit it yet in the list. The beer had great hints of grapefruit, orange and citrus peel; as the name would imply. Mike also pulled out some hints of grape or berries which we later in the video ascribe to reports of passionfruit in the flavor profile.
    The flavor character was more pronounced than the aroma at first, but this is likely just an application issue. More late hopping would favor more aroma obviously.
    Love Citra? Tell us about your experience with Citra. Is it a great standalone hop for you?
    CHEERS!

    Hey Brew Dudes! Thanks again for another fun and informative video. Just killed my second keg of a MACE NEIPA I concocted based on some of your videos, including the SMASH series on those four great hops: Mosaic, Azacca. Citra, and Eukanot. Can't thank you guys enough for helping me to develop my own hoppy orchestra! I have to say in that particular combination (and in the way I used them), that the pine, citrus peel, and tropical notes were all outstanding and well balanced. Some of the secondary notes which you guys have pointed out (such as green pepper, grape skin, and berry flavors) were completely masked (for better or worse depending upon your taste). Been busy foraging for the woods of Michigan's UP for ingredients to use in future brews. I'd like to send in some samples for you guys to try eventually.....cheers!

    Currently brewing an organic citra pilsner. Like the crispness of pilsners but I wanted to try a hop that would impart more of a citrusy profile.

    Great video guys, your experience sounds very similar to mine. Citra by itself felt very one dimensional - so much so I ended up adding Galaxy to my Citra SMaSH in the keg. Love your no-nonsense approach to UA-cam 👍🏻

    Thinking outside the box I made a juniper mead and dry hopped with citra. It worked really well and I am going to try a beer with the same concept. I think you guys are totally right and it is a very strong supporting player.

    Cool video guys. Have been following you for 4 years now. Doesn't get old. Keep up the good work :) I would love to see a video similar to the Citra vs Mosaic from last week but with Galaxy and Vic Secret! Or a "What do Enigma Hops taste like?" video? Would be amazing. Cheers from Germany :)

    I love these smash videos, when you bottle conditioning is how long do you let them sit before putting them in the refrigerator?

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  5 років тому

      At least 10 days when I was bottling them. Thanks to PicoBrew, I have two 1.75 gallon kegs to force carbonate the beer, which is sweet because it means I can get them ready for videos faster. 10 days was the minimum number of days - the bottles would need to be in a warm room for them to be ready in that amount of time. Most times, it took 14 days. - John

    Last month, we did a SMASH beer comp at our local brew club. The first place was a Maris Otter - Citra in a NEIPA style and the second place was a Maris Otter - Citra in Pale Ale style. This hop is by far a crowd pleaser. The Galaxy hop SMASH beers were with Munich malt, so were overpowered by the malts and didn't get as much votes. Agree, if there was a Galaxy/Maris Otter SMASH, it would have been a closer comparison.

    Hey Mike, I see the last straw beer gun seating there. How's it working for you? I'm planning to get one....or do you have a video of you showing how to use it?

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  5 років тому

      I'd tap the breaks on the last straw. I used it months ago and hated it. Went back and forth with NB on what the problem may be and never got a good answer. In my house I refer to it as the decarbonator. If you have beer in kegs that's nicely carbonated and you want to bottle some flat beer... the Last Straw is your tool. Seriously though I have a couple beers in kegs that I plan to bottle soon. So I'm going to do more testing, if it works out I'll do a video about my experience with it soon. Good luck. -Mike

    BTW, have you guys tried a SMASH with Nelson Sauvin yet? Seemed to be a very hot hop some years ago, but you don't hear any more about them. Maybe they just got lost in the hop avalanche of recent years?

    Fascinating as ever guys, thanks. I suggestion if i May. When it comes to the 'sniff test' rather than drawing air through 'snoring organ' at supersonic velocity, (LOL!) try being more gentle / slower. It seemed to improve the way I smell things (beer). Maybe the slower speed enables more sensors to work??? Suggestion offered in the kindest way - cheers guys :)

      Amazing. I wonder if its our differences in taste or the batch of Citra. I know I've had commercial beers that were all Citra and really enjoyed them. I've also had some that were so/so to poor. So I really think its a lot to lot difference with the hops. -Mike

      @@BrewDudes mayb so my batch was a 12.9% alpha from 2018 and i used over 2kg to 1 hectolitre so mayb with the other suggested hops i could save money by reducing the amount of hop but even so the beer is fantastic and as good as any commercial i have tasted
      when you pop the cap on your own beer and pour it in the glass and take a drink and you can picture the beer from a leading brewery you know its a good beer
