What Do Lemondrop Hops Taste Like? SMaSH Beer Experiment

We have another SMaSH beer to try out and this time around we are trying on brewed with Lemondrop hops. This beer's hop flavor and aroma was so subtle, it was really hard to pick it for both John and myself. Once John told me what the flavor/aroma profile was supposed to be, it still didn't seem obvious. It was tough to pull lemon out on my own without some help.
Tell us your Lemondrop Hop experience in the comment section below!
BREW ON!
Late to (researching) watching these SMaSH videos, but thanks for doing them. If just these aren't in a playlist they should be. Super helpful dudes.
This video should be in our SMaSH Beer Playlist tasting playlist. Thanks!
This was a great one! Definitely fun to watch you guys experiment with these oddball hops and have a good time doing so.
Thank you and Brew on! - John
Just did a lemondrop/citra dry hop IPA. Citra is more lemon than lemondrop. Agree about Sorachi too. love that hop. So characteristic
Thanks! Appreciate your thoughts. I should brew another beer with Sorachi - John
I used this to dry hop a citra ipa and it came out super nice
That combo makes sense. Thanks for the comment! Cheers! -Mike
Should I buy a packet of Lemondrop and brew a smash I was wondering... until I found your video and got an answer to that. Thanks guys! I really enjoyed your video too! It was great that it was a kind of a blind test... and fun. More of that, please!
Glad you got direct help from this video. CHEERS! -Mike
LOVE THESE!!!! Thanks guys.
Thanks Cain!
I made a pilsner using Lemondrop and Calypso hops. It was fantastic
Very good. I could see how the subtle flavors would work in a Pilsner. - John
It's Brew Dudes Thursday!
Thanks!
"it is lemon, let me stop you there" hahahahaha
Ha.
You guys crash me up! Nice job stopping right after he dismissed the flavor. I really enjoy your content. Where do you find these hops?
Like making a short up front video ordering your next smash beer hop varietal to let your secret out wouldn't make sense, but I'm totally curious
I found these hops at my local homebrew shop - Beer & Wine Hobby in Woburn, MA. When I am in there for other stuff, I pick up a weird 1 ounce packet for blog videos basically - John
Now that's thinking.
I've had the same experience with this hop in the UK so you didn't have a poor sample. I was expecting a big American Hop flavour but I would say that Saaz has a bigger flavour. (yes there is a U in flavour :-)
You can spell flavor however you want. Thanks for the comment and the information. We were sorta disappointed by this one. It was not as lemon-y as the name forecasts. - John
It would be fun to know how much Lemon Drop hops you popped into your brew and what the hop schedule was. You might get more Lemon Drop flavor with a bigger late hop addition. Would love to get ahold of A little Sorachi Ace. Would love to know where to find it.
I put in a pinch at 60 minutes to go in the boil (.125 ounces). The majority of it goes at flameout (0.625 ounce) with 0.25 ounces that I dry hop with. One gallon batches with an ounce of hops....that's how it goes. You should be able to find Sorachi Ace hops online. - John
Do a smash with Comet hops. Its called "Citra's little sister". I'm curious if you guys would agree. Also, Loral is a fantastic "mellow" hop.
Yeah I second comet hops. It's in my IPA with Eureka and apollo!
Putting Comet hops on the list. I will buy some soon. - John
Brew Dudes .
Fantastic flavour has this IPA. Comet + Eureka + Apollo. Maybe Eureka hops too! Thanks John!
it sounds like the lime you are meant to get from Wakatu, if its there its super subtle.
I think so. Sorachi Ace has more lemon flavor than Lemondrop. -John
Hey Dudes, I Don't know if you have talked about it before but what do you think about Cryo Hops? LupuLN2? Debittered leaf? My LHBS told me about it. Have you tried it? Cheers and Brew On
I have a one ounce bag of LupuLN2 Cascade powder. I will make a SMaSH of that. - John
good video
Thanks marty.
I used lemondrop with pilsen malt and US-05 yeast. 1oz bitter, 1oz at end of boil, and 2oz dry hop. I literally couldn't smell or taste them at all, and the beer just tasted like a cream ale lol. Maybe I don't know how to brew though
Hmm... strange and unfortunate. Jump over to our blog message us and send us one of those beer. I'd love to taste it myself if you'd like. Not sure what would have happened there. We wonder about hop freshness quite a bit from our LHBS. Maybe that was an issue for you too???? Just a thought. -Mike
@@BrewDudes Dang unfortunately that beer is long gone hah, everybody still enjoyed it for the cream ale that it essentially was! I keg my beer and generally when they are done they are done. I was really excited for a bit of a lemon aspect on top of a pilsen malt base but yeah only the pilsen malt base came through. Also I chose pilsen to try and have the mildest base for the hops to shine through. I'd potentially be willing to try brewing with them again, but honestly if they perform similar to how they did the first time I don't think I would ever add them to any hop combo in the future. Generally I use 3-4 hop varieites per beer so it was quite a disappointing SMASH, but I do find SMASH beers to be great beers for learning flavor profile so I still don't have any complaints over the experiment. Hopefully this adds a little bit more to your guys's data point. As to the freshness, honestly its tough to say whether or not there is a freshness issue. The hops I often get seem to have arrived within a week or two of me buying them, but it certainly is possible that the lemondrops sat around for a while before I bought them.
Citra and fuggle are 2 I'd like to see
Added to the list. - John
Dang
1st but 2nd lol
There you go.
I’m always shocked lemon drop hop smells lemon but I don’t necessarily taste the nose.
True! It's not as lemony as it should be.
Great... another 10 minutes I'll never get back.
Sorry, but it's your choice.
