What do Sabro Hops Taste Like? SMASH Beer Experiment

  • This week, we fulfill a viewer SMaSH beer request with a tasting review of a Sabro hops SMaSH beer!!!
This one was a tough one to characterize for Mike. He always defaults to some weird vegetal things when he can't place the flavor profile. Mike got some fruitiness, but felt that it also had some bell pepper and or some green onion in there.
The actually descriptors list out lime zest and coconut along with some other citrus notes.
We both were then able to agree on the coconut aspect but only with the prompting would Mike have gotten there. Take that as you want but we found this hop to be interesting but fairly mild in this application. Perhaps blowing it out with 4+ounces in the recipe would make those descriptors stand out.
Have you had a chance yet to try SABRO HOPS??

You guys need to post some long videos of full brew days, I love seeing people's process.

Working on it! We sometimes fear the long format but we are working on breaking different parts of the process into shorter videos. Thanks for watching! -Mike

@@ryanyolosvinshon3814 I was a big fan of that series. We should do more of that too. Just wanted to do it in a way that was more original to us as well. Also, our production schedule is more intense. Our weekly video goal is easier in this format. But we want to try and pepper in more brew action type stuff once a month or so. Cheers! -Mike

great fun! check out long beach beer lab’s @lbbeerlab Big Lebowski pairing event. it was a dessert pairing to complement their Kosher (yeah!) bakery. one of the four they paired was a single hop Sabro IPA with a peppermint choco chip cookie. My palate is like really poor, but I did get some coconut in the end and some mintiness in the background.

4 years later and I have my first NEIPA with Sabro in the Keg. It has sooo much coconut aroma and flavor, and I actually paired it with Citra and Galaxy. The ratio is 4:2:1 (Galaxy:Sabro:Citra).

I brewed a Pale Ale two weeks ago, the grist was ale malt, pilsner malt and golden naked oats. I used Sabro for bittering 20 minutes, steeped 20 minutes with 55% Sabro, 45% Galaxy and Citra and did the same at dry hop. Beer tasted like a combination of mint and tropical fruits, was bloody delicious! Cheers fellas, love the videos.

I’ve stumbled across y’all’s channel as I watch a lot of homebrew videos and was recommended one of your SMaSH videos. Love the format of isolating these hops to get a proper read on the flavors/aromas/bittering potential. Ive enjoyed how one of you remains in the dark as to what the hop packagers are selling the hops as.
I don’t know if it was a bad batch, mislabeled hops, or poor brewing practices on this one, but Sabro is my favorite hop and I’ve brewed with it enough to run through a few pounds in just about two years brewing only 5 gallon batches. It is unmistakably candy peach, specifically - peach rings. I get some tangerine and mild citrus in the background. MAYBE slight coconut, but it’s very sweet stonfruit candy to me. Every batch I’ve used it in. Super dominant too! In brews divided into 3 equal hopping proportions with Galaxy, Azacca, Citra, etc, I’ve had it be dominant to the point of losing the other hops! I understand it’s all subjective, but this seems off to the point of misinformation.
Love what y’all are doing, though, and keep making videos!

I was up in Portland, ME 2 years ago enjoying all of the fine breweries and I had Bissell Bros Swish and I swear i tasted straight raw onions and nothing else. I've used sabro hops twice now for my kviek ipa recipe. The aroma and flavor I get is 100% tangerine. The only exception is the few beers I have tried where they dry hopped it and I got more vegetal/coconut flavors but still a tangerine aroma. I am definitely sticking with it for my west coast IPA recipe because it has that "juicy fruit" quality you briefly mentioned and I love that approach to it. Cheers!

@@BrewDudes Hey Mike and John! Just wanted to give you an update on these hops. The tangerine that I am getting is pretty intense and present in a Sam Adams brewery only sabro pale ale that I have a 4 pack of. If you guys think that you can stop by the shop in Weymouth or Cambridge sometime in the next few weeks I can get a can to you guys to try (and review if you want, at your leisure). Hit me up and let me know because this beer is very tangerine forward.

Its 100% worth the try. Don't be bashful and really load it up IMO. I'd bitter with something mild like magnum and warrior for ~40IBUs. Then hit it hard at flameout and dry hop with the Sabro. Good luck! Let us know if it comes out -Mike

I think Mike was spot on when he talked about blending Sabro with other hops. I recently did a NEIPA using a Sabro/Azzaca combination and I think the Sabro was pretty much overwhelmed. Maybe a little onion as Mike kept stating?

I get that green pepper skin flavor from Galena which is my favorite hop. It can be used as late addition but because it's high AA% people tend to only use it for bittering. I grow Galena and every late summer early fall I have a freezer full of hops that last me 6-7months. Galena is the best hop in my opinion, but now I'm interested to try Sabro. I'm surprised you guys didn't say "Sah bro" lol the puns alone would make it worth it. Keep on keeping on guys you rock. I'm kegging and bottling a SMASH beer this week with my homegrown Galena and Maris Otter. How do I send you guys some to try Idc about it being on video just want better input on flavor than just "it's good" that I get from friends and family.

I tried a commercial, all sabro IPA a while back. It smacked my mouth woth coconut, all in the flavour and kind of blended with the bitterness; bitter coconut? When i brewed with it, i didn't get any coconut. I wonder if the commercial beer snuck in some real coconut

It's so odd that I seem to have a completely different impression of Sabro than everyone else. I find it much less fruity than most recent IPA hops. More funky and musky. That's why I really like it

I don't know how you can taste this and not think it tastes like 100% coconut. Mix it with any tropical hop and it tastes like a gdamn pina colada. It definitely stands up against Citra, Mosaic, etc. I know everyone tastes things differently, but this one is so distinct to me.

Onion is usually a sign of late harvest hops. Could be a bad batch and not truly representative of the hops
I've had some bad experiences with oniony Columbus hops from yakima valley that were way different from other lots

    • @BrewDudes
      @BrewDudes  2 роки тому +1

Yeah, I believe that sometimes these less than perfect representations of hop styles get sent to the homebrew market. With close to 9K breweries in the US alone I'd bet that problem is becoming more frequent that we'd like to know. Cheers! -Mike

I have to disagree on the assessment of this hop. I have used it many times and have paired it with Mosaic (50/50) and it has held its own every time. I would not consider Sabro delicate, but classify it as assertive and up there in character expression with all the heavy hitters. It is very unique and lends a distinctive pina colada flavor to beer. It’s become one of my favorites to use in NEIPA’s. I’ve never gotten anything even close to green onion or pepper from this. Not sure where that came from??.
