- This week on Hops in Focus, it’s time for the big one. The omnipresent, industry standard for many modern IPA brewers. We take a look at Citra this week, including its interesting background and lineage. We use beers from The Kernel, Beak and Azvex to showcase the hop and get to the bottom of what makes it so popular.

These days I find it hard to get a good grasp on what individual hops are like. As much as I like New England IPA, specific characteristics get lost in a general hop flavour. Back in the day, Mikkeller is a single hop series and that really helped me understand certain varieties. Happy Ronking
Yeah when everything apparently has varying flavour of grapefruit, citrus and/or stone fruit then it's really hard to differentiate many modern hops. You need a really refined palette and sense of smell to pick out certain ones from a crowd, that's for sure!
Good ronking to you as well, sir
I forgot to reply on the last video, but yes, this is exactly what I had in mind! Videos covering the hop varieties that drinkers are most likely to come across. It would be awesome if you wanted to cover wacky, unusual hops in the future, but I think the major ones are more useful to know about
Thanks man. Funny you should say that! Watch this space very soon...
Cheers lads, the OG craft hop indeed. These New Zealand hops popping up in everything are great but Citra is still my favourite for a single hop IPA/DIPA. I get grapefruit and earthy dank (occasionally tangerine)
Indeed! It’s certainly easy to see why Citra has become the go to base hop for craft brewers. Cheers 🍻
Hops In Focus is a cool resource for homebrewers! Can I put in request for a focus on Centennial?
Thanks so much! We’ll whack that one on the list for you 🍻
Should have tried Oakham Citra, the 1st brew in this country to try the Citra hop I believe............
It was on our shortlist, but the Craft Beer Channel did a great video on Oakham Citra last year which we felt covered it nicely. So we opted for The Kernel for instead.
Fruit car
@@exetercitycubing408 Talk dirty to me! If Fruit Car had been brewing when we filmed this, it would’ve been 100% picked.
